Angels Un-Shielded, Lose on Walk Off Walk

Final Score in Los Angeles: Angels 4, Dodgers 5

In perhaps the most terrible way to lose a ballgame in all of baseball, Angels pitcher Jose Arredondo walked in the winning run in extra innings. A Walk Off Walk to Juan Pierre ended a close contest between the Angels and the Dodgers.

For the first time this season, the Angels looked like they had given up the game before it was over. In a tied game in the bottom of the 9th, Scot Shields threw over to first base with such casual carelessness that the ball bounced on the infield grass and caromed halfway to right field's foul territory. Arredondo was brought in the game on a technicality , an alleged injury to Shields.

An inning prior to that, a base hit by James Loney (after the count went full on a suddenly and ridiculously squeezed strikezone) off of Shields was stretched into a double, with Juan Rivera getting to the ball quickly and firing it to Howie Kendrick. Instead of turning and slapping the runner (a sure out), Howie had assumed "single" and didn't bother to check the other side of the base, soon to be reached by a sliding Loney.

Loney would score the tying run soon afterward. Two innings later, the game ended. It was the 10th loss by the Angels bullpen this season.

After the game, manager Mike Scioscia told Jose Mota on FoxSportsWest that Shields' knee had gotten too stiff to complete the inning. Shields has been diagnosed with tendinitis in the back of his knee but it is not significant enough to put him on the disabled list. YET.

On the bright side, John Lackey's quality start plus was 7 innings of 3-run ball with 5 Ks (three of them to Dodger centerfielder Matt Kemp). The four Angel runs were all courtesy of the longball. Juan Rivera hit a solo shot to lead off the 4th and Torii Hunter hit a 3-run bomb into the Dodger bullpen in the 5th inning.

Shit Shields
the only run Shields gave up, was the run that HK failed to tag out.
13 people and counting do not agree.

I voted Willits since his failed AB blew.

Raise you 15
15 what? no hit innings? AB's without a strikeout for HK?
15 people voted for Shields.

look up

But I bet you all agree that if there was a proportionated system of assigning Blame of the Game, HK would get some

Agree. I have to see that replay again. Still haven’t seen it. I should have waited to vote.

HK did not "lose" the game, ET did hence the BOTG

Rev put it right…“in the worst way to lose in baseball!” BOTG – Arredondo

Fangraphs says Dondo easily over anyone else.

but……I dont really like fangraphs anyways lol.

Dude that was Willts first AB in forever

guy didn’t even start the game. ease up a bit on the guy on the bottom of the totem-pole

you have a great point.

can I withdraw my vote?

Jose

walked more and gave up just as many hits and runs as Shields but he did it while getting four less outs

But that should have been Funetuessarus

But shields blew it like he was getting paid to.

Arredondo all the way

Walks a guy trying to bunt the runner over, then walks in the winning run. You have to at least make them earn it! He should be in the doghouse big time.

I find it funny how everyone says “Soth should have brought in Arredondo for the 8th!!” Then when he does bring in Arredondo, they still bitch and moan about it when he loses the game by giving up a run. Nothing against you leftwing, just sayin’ about the feel of most folks in the gamethread.

Like last night, a close call, but in a bad way.

I can’t choose between Shieldsy and ET.

Howie totally blew this game

It would have been over in the 9th and we would have won.

Arrendondo

2 hits, 2 walks in 1/3 of an inning. you suck bro

Willits?

If we changed the last option to All of the Above… it would be +EV.

should have had an all of the above

Somali Pirates LOSE

Even the Somali pirates agree!
" Somalian pirates are we!"

O come on, gotta be Kendrick. If he isn't half asleep, Dodjer is out, Game Over. We Win
Howie is dumb.

Dondo was awful, but that was mechanical not mental. Mental errors are inexcusable.

BOTG: Howie.

Who drew you Ladybug?
I just threw mine across the room.
you're Kate Gosselin? (:

them's fightin' words buddy.
chick haunts my nightmares
Mmmmmmmmm, media whore!
We lost on a WALK

What are we? The 2000 Mets in the World Series?

Papelblown gave up 2 in the 9th to the mets to lose.....

so that makes me feel a tad better……..just a smidge.

itty bitty bit

that helps…. just a little though

Except Texas won so we are back to 3.5 games.

3.0 games

back, not 3.5

committed the cardinal sin too....

walked the leadoff guy who was Gary Sheffield….and then gave up a bomb an out later.

BOTG Soth

That lineup he threw out there was BAD. How about getting Naps the start against the lefty who his OPS against so far this year is 1300 instead of the righty tomorrow who he hits a pedestrian 800 OPS against.

Aybar has his worst game as a pro last night, so of course he’s right back out there tonight leading the failboat batting 2nd right in front of the only two guys Soth put in who can hit. And sure enough where did our 4 runs come from.

I’m just fed up with so many players on this team. Yea I know Q had three hits tonight but he’s sucked for almost 2 straight years now. GMJ is having a decent May but when was the last time his overall numbers were anything acceptable for a corner OF? Aybar is overmatched far too often.

I agree it was a bad lineup, but...

I wonder if Naps needs a day off.

Aybar needs to “get back on the horse” so to speak.

Q has only had <30AB’s all year. Easy on the Mini-scrotum local.

it's always possible he's hurt and we don't know about it

but he’s also been getting a lot of time at DH which you’d have to think would mean he’d be fine to catch. When Mathis was actually hitting the ball it was 10x easier to see Naps riding pine too.

Don't know much about baseball

do you

What DH'ing isn't a lot easier on his body than catching

Please elaborate on my complete non-understanding.

A little late on the reply

Don’t want to play both catchers at the same time. I have no idea why Sosh doesn’t bring up another catcher from the minors to solve this, But now with Vlad back it kind of cured itself.

not cool to go that route...

I like a lot that you post eyespy, but don’t belittle the guy.

This is a long stretch of games with no days off.

You have to rest some of the guys here and there.

He had a day off 3 games ago

Yes, he caught the 2 games before this, but if he can’t catch 3 games in a row, how about planning ahead a little so your entire lineup isn’t sitting at the same time?

Turn the page.

we still have a shot at winning the series.

agreed.......it is all about winning series......

that the important part to me

which is why they should have tried a lot harder to win tonight

Billingsly is a good pitcher and will mow through Angels not name K-Mo, Hunter, and Napoli.

actually

In my observations of the Angels pathetic offense over the years, they suck against shitting pitching (ie Texas and Baltimore) and give good pitching some trouble (ie. Yankees, Detroit). Could be a selective memory though. We’ll see.

That page is a little heavier when its the dodgers.
just another MLB team, man.

nothing else.

I just gotta deal with nothing but dodger fans tomorrow

shit gets annoying so hopefully Palmer pulls it out tomorrow

Just bring up how great 1988 was...

Remember good ole Anal Hershisher? Gets ’em laughing every time.

I am guessing most of the Dodger fans now probably don't even know who Orel is
except my brother went to this particular game

he’s gonna be happy ofr the next three hours in that parking lot

BOTG

Whoever made the Win Pic and told us how awesome it was before the game was over

lol yeah.....thats when it started to crumble.....

haha….great point

Vlad man I think.
stupid mistakes

it seems as if small stupid ass mistakes are whats killing the team…

On the lighter side...

Vlad 2 for 3 with double and an RBI tonight for RCuc

so he doesn't have to SLG 1000 at every level before getting promoted????

Guess that only applies to a select few.

Went to the game

I feel gross.

Try a shower. Use lava soap. Maybe just plain lye.
A way for Shields to save face

was his departure, citing tendinitis. I’m waiting for Penn and Teller to call BULLSHIT!

Explain to me please!

Kendrick & Aybar can continue to make mental mistakes and stay in the lineup, but Morales doesn’t play against lefties b/c Quinlan needs at bats and Wood stays in AAA for no good reason and Napoli isn’t in the starting lineup against a lefty and GMJ is playing on a regular basis!

I’m starting to think the geeks up in Silicon Valley who root for the A’s have created a cyborg that looks exactly like Mike Scioscia but refuses to play smart baseball.

Shields threw well again, Loney’s double wasn’t a bad pitch and if Howie is paying attention he is out at 2nd, Jose was erratic as usual and should not be used in extra inning situations (although we don’t have much to choose from) and we should not expect to win if we have Aybar, GMJ, Quinlan, and Mathis in the starting lineup, especially in an NL park where the pitcher has to hit. If not for some random power we would have been shut out again.

very good questions

especially about Napoli…. he absolutely kills lefties, soft tossing ones at that like Wolf. Get him into the lineup somehow even if it was at 1B. He actually doesn’t do that well against Righties with firm fastballs, like the guy he’ll be facing today.

I also have no idea why some guys are given multiple stay in the lineup passes while others languish away w/o the same mistakes.

GMJ has actually been hot lately...

I agree with everything else…

True

last night notwithstanding

Dodger fans (some of them)

I made the foolish decision to go to Dodger Stadium tonight. Dodger fans have officially promoted themselves to being as big of pieces of trash as Red Sox fans. Why is it that the Dodger fans keep chanting “Angels Suck” over and over and over. Does it not get old? They act like the Angels slept with their mothers.

they're all jealous

We win w/o resorting to taking on a guy that takes steroids and pushes down 70 year old men.

What do you mean?

Pedro pushed zimmer down, and it was because zimmer came at him…

He is referring to Manny

who pushed down one of the attendants at Fenway Park last season because he did not get his desired allotment of seats.

I was told to go back to Disneyland all night

I don’t even like Disneyland; I’m more of a Six Flags man.

I’m more of a “Magic Mountain” man. Never could get to calling it “Six Flags.”

I would like to point out, however,

that Dodger Stadium itself is a lot better than I remember it. Maybe this is because I’ve never sat in the loge section, or maybe they improved in the last four years. The food wasn’t bad either. Maybe some more expensive seats closer to the infield would prove to be a little more enjoyable!

You were in their house. Deal with it. Thick skin and all of that.

Howie Kendrick failed tonight.

Tired of the “potential”. Who needs a player that is batting .240 that makes ridiculous mental mistakes and errors inthe field all the time. He looks likes he is miles away from being able to put together a quality major league at bat. I think they should get a Aybar/Maicer rotation going with Sean Rodriguez and Howie at second. S Rod might be welcome power or Kendrick might start to get a fire lit under him. As of right now, Kendrick is hurting the team more than he is helping. That loss was all on him today in my personal opinion.

I am begging to know what it takes for Scioscia to bench someone. I cannot believe Aybar was back in the lineup. Howie needs to be benched too, but he won’t be.

Also, today was a retarded line up. No Kendry? No Napoli? On a team starving for power, you would think a manager wouldn’t remove half of their home run potential when you have a chance to go up 2-0 on the best team (record wise) in baseball. I mean I know I am no baseball genius, or even 1/100 of the what Scioscia is, but man I have been questioning moves all year. I hate the way he is running the team right now a little bit. He gives all these chances to those that have not proved themselves and then keeps those with potential from proving themselves at all. Its really weird. I wish i had power in the Angels system to call some shots. I am so frustrated!

Gotta love them halos though.

No. The most terrible way to lose a ballgame in all of baseball is when your closer nonchalants a return throw from the catcher, drops it, and the guy on third scores.

Ugh

Is it really necessary to bring back that memory?

Lackey

Why would Lackey be blamed for the loss? He gave 7 strong innings, gave up three runs and could of probably went one more inning. Give Lackey three more starts, or after the all-star break and watch him back to form. In my opinion, he is one of the top 5-8 starts in the league, and he does not get enough credit.

I voted for Shields

To those who say that Shields pitched well and just got unlucky, I say: Are you serious??? Yes, he got squeezed on the 3rd strike to Loney in the 8th. Yes, Howie was asleep on the potential tag at second base. But Shields was horrible. He could not locate pitches, even on practice throws. It was painful to watch.

Dondo also was terrible, but he at least got us out of the 9th. Shields got us out of nothing. He blew the lead in the 8th, then was on the verge of losing in the 9th before he excused himself. Dondo at least had one great moment before he completely shat the bed in the 10th.

As a sidenote to this bullpen fiasco, Lackey should have ended that 5th inning without giving up those runs.

Dondo

its doesn’t matter what happened before the walk of walk. we don’t know what would have happened if Shields got out of the ninth with the lead. who knows what would have happened if Fuentes got in there. thats something we don’t know. all i saw was Dondo throwing 3 stupid balls before he threw 2 strikes. knowing there was no outs he still pitched one way out of the zone. it wasn’t even close. at least make them earn it with a ball in play.

Doesn't matter?

Shields came in with the lead and left in a tied game on the brink of a loss. How does that not matter?

because

the game wasn’t over. they still had a chance to win. yeah he didn’t do the job, but they didn’t lose because of him.
