Final Score in Los Angeles: Angels 3, Dodgers 1
A three and a half hour game in Los Angeles to decide who the best team in Southern California is came up with the correct answer: IT IS THE ANGELS!
Well the National League park hosted a National League style game compete with bunting, defense, pick-offs, pitchers batting, pinch-hitters, more defense, no homeruns, lots of stranded runners and weak weak weak hitting with runners in scoring position - in fact, runners on 2nd and 3rd in this game were not really in scoring position. They were stranded 26 times between both teams, but not by Angels 3B-Man Chone Figgins in the 8th inning, whose clutch double with one out and the bases loaded was the difference in a plodding chess match of inept baserunning and slick leather.
That is right - the Dodgers and the Angels were 3-28 with men in scoring position. Consider that Angel Erick Aybar popped out on a sac bunt TWICE in the game, stranding Chone Figgins at 2nd once and 3rd another time. This was in addition to Aybar striking out swinging and tossing his bat toward shortstop with Figgy on 3rd later in the game and then grounding into a double play in the 8th after Figgins had put the Angels ahead for good. And it took a LOT to stand out as frustrated offensively on a frustrating night for both offenses.
Brian Fuentes picked up his MAJOR LEAGUE LEADING twelfth save in the 9th. He is tied with, guess who... Francisco Rodriguez of the New York Mets for the most Saves in baseball. Guess what else? Frankie got his tonight in Boston. The Angels keep up with the Rangers who had to go to extra innings with the weak Astros before beating Houston 6-5.
And as with every Dodger-Angel game, Angel fans were served a respite from the terrible yammerings of play-by-play amateur Steve Physioc. Most Angel fans know the Freeway Series means tuning in to watch their team on the Dodgers station, KCAL-9 and got great game coverage as well as entertaining and succinct stories (that all had a point) about their team and its players by the legendary Vin Scully, the Hall of Fame broadcaster with a vocabulary that exceeds fifty on-air words, many of them of the four syllable variety.

Agreed.
They didn’t deserve to win. They lucked out. I just kept waiting for Aybar to make a defensive error that would blow the game for us. That’s just about the only other thing he could possibly have done wrong aside from openly cheering for the Dodgers from our dugout.

That other night when Izzy got picked off, but ran it out and made it safe to 2nd? Figgins needs to learn it’s always better to take your chances and just keep going. Once the defense has a chance to establish a routine pickle, the runner is almost always going to be tagged out.

I invite you to review the TIVO, which I just did.
Martin was well up the line, and no “simple hard slide” would have gotten Figgins anywhere. Figgins has two options: get tagged out quickly or get tagged out slowly. He opted for the latter, and slow-footed Rivera made it all the way to second base as a result.
I have to think folks that think otherwise were listening to the game on radio, because this was unambiguous.

The ball was NOT in martins glove……It was sitting on his wrist/arm.
Figgin CONTACT with MARTIN = RUN + ball rolling away and runner going to 2B.

Yes I’ve been watching since he got here and dont really care for the attacks. Figgy froze not once but twice on the way home. That was his gaffe. The contact play should have been on with run production being what it was that game.

That's a weird read.
Had he continued forward he would have been out by a mile. He slowed down and reversed course to allow Rivera to reach second base, which he did. Martin was a third of the way up the line and would have had him out easy if he continued to advance.

his stall tactics in the pickle gave rivera second. however, he should have simply just gone home. he would have beaten the throw with furcal bobbling twice and martin not cleanly fielding the catch. that was the gaffe.

My dad pointed something out to me one time that I never forgot. He said “You notice that he tells a lot of stories and what not? Notice how he is never interrupted by a pitch or an out? He has such good timing, and knows the game so well, he can tell stories and time his breaks not only by the pitch, but almost by the out.”
And its true. He does.
No awkward cutting off stories most of the time.

I'll be the jerk to say it,
I can’t stand Vin Scully. I hate his nasally tone of voice. He sounds bored and pompous all the time. The only thing I’ll admit is that he does have a colorful way of calling the game. But he’s often too negative, even towards his own team. I know he’s of the old ilk that believes in calling the game objectively, not being a gamer like Phys and Hud, but he’s often too detached. I don’t buy it anyway. Anyone who’s stayed with an organization that long is obviously a fan of the organization. I think Rory Marcus is a great blend of being a professional at calling the game, but also positive about his team.

He’s so garbled. It has more to do with his syntax than his accent. He can’t construct a sentence properly. I find myself straining to extrapolate the true meaning of each sentence. It’s like he just memorized a list of baseball-related words and strings them together randomly, hoping it will mean something.

I'm kind of surprised that some Angels fans would look forward to listening to the Dodgers broadcast.
Well, not really, I guess. I understand the loathing of Phyz, but I love Hudler and the rest of our broadcast team and wouldn’t listen to anybody else. And I’ve said as much on here before, but while I understand the greatness of Vin, I could really care less about listening to him. He puts me to sleep, similar to how the Spurs can win championships and be an amazingly sound, pure basketball team, but also boring as hell to watch.

just don’t knock Rory! That guy’s got it all – smarts, wit, good vocabulary… I love how he picks on Gubi. I actually really like watching when it’s Rory and Gubi. Gubi takes it all in good stride.
Only thing I can’t stand about Gubi is how he says “That ball was scolded!” So, someone was yelling at the ball, disciplining it?

I will never like anything about the Dodgers, and that includes the legendary Vin Scully. I say, anyone who has any tendency to think there is anything about the Dodgers that they sort of like, or (God forbid) thinks they can somehow sort of be an Angels fan AND a Dodgers fan has got to go read a book on Angels history. Knowing how the Dodgers organization has tried to screw the Angels since day one makes it pretty hard to find any redeeming quality in them.
Oh, and congrats. Now go get a job, boy.
