Final Score in the Dallas Suburbs: Angels 8, Rangers 10
Angels fans will tell themselves that It was just one of those games where nothing went right, and they better hope this is the case, because if the Texas Rangers are as dominant as they were Friday night at home, the division will be all theirs.
A final push in the 9th inning by the Angels against the scrubs of the Texas bullpen cannot gloss over a disappointing start to the team's ten game road trip. Two seemingly meaningless runs given up by Shane Loux in the bottom of the 8th inning to make the game 10-3 turned out to be the difference on a night when every grasp at getting into the game by the Angels seemed to be a greased pig with no handles. With the tying runs on base and two outs in the 9th, Howie Kendrick took a first pitch belt-high fastball and then grounded out to 2nd base on the 3rd pitch of the at-bat.
When the game still mattered (in the 2nd inning) the Angels loaded the bases with one out on a walk and two singles. Howie Kendrick then took a first pitch strike that had HIT ME tattooed all over it. He weakly grounded into a double play on the next pitch and that was pretty much the ball game.
But hey, I heard some idiot say that Kendrick was going to be a future batting champion one day, and I am just an idiot parrot, so let's all hang in there and pull for old Hesitatin' Howie.
All Star Joe Saunders was lit up by the Texas bats and Texas Semi-Ace Kevin Millwood benefited from two of the three Angel double plays in the game. Saunders didn't have to worry about his pitch count as he was delivering meatballs on the first pitch to Texas hitters who mashed them into spaghetti RBIs.
Shane Loux made his first relief appearance of the season, and in the 9th inning the team staged a semi-comeback against the bottom end of the Rangers bullpen (Kendry Morales hit a 3-Run jack after Bobby Abreu had hit a double to plate two runners) to make it interesting, but the only real highlight of the night was Erick Aybar's line-drive HR after the game was a joke. Just inside the foulpole, it came after Jeff Mathis had been picked off base. It was that kind of night for the Angels.

That was the most entertaining ninth-inning rally in a loss
I’ve seen in a while. What a great scare-‘em rally. (Of course, if Hokie Joe didn’t blow up, this might’ve been a win.)

I like how Kendry got 2 BOTG votes before hitting a 3 run HR in the 9th

Blame has to go to Joe
Groovin’ too many pitches.
vladtheimpaler - May 15, 2009
Dang - I really wanted 1st place at the end of this weekend.
angelsfan777 - May 15, 2009
Can't we blame Ian Kinsler?
Maybe even Dino Ebel – without that ridiculous windmill the rally in the 5th doesn’t die…
reddawnman - May 15, 2009
I don't mind blaming Kinsler.
angelsfan777 - May 15, 2009
Once again....
…running ourselves out of an inning when we are 6 runs behind.
I don’t understand that. Oh well…welcome to (over) aggressive Angel baseball.
sothball - May 15, 2009
Live by the Sword...
It’s what makes the Angels so entertaining and yet so hair pulling frustrating
Seik1177 - May 15, 2009
nothing is entertaining about making an out with 1 at home plate down by 6 runs
Selectively aggressive is the key. The Angels have to let the situation dictate their aggressiveness. Like Abreu getting thrown out at home yesterday by Drew, even though he was thrown out by a decent amount at least it was the correct situation to be aggressive.
MH252525 - May 15, 2009
You're right
I think they sent Abreu because they thought Ellsbury would make the catch, as he’d be running towards right field and wouldn’t be able to make a good throw. Instead Drew caught it and was moving in the right direction to get a decent throw off to the plate.
WiHaloFan - May 16, 2009
I'm ok with it
I like the way they play and don’t believe there is such a thing as “selectively aggressive”. When the Angels are constantly forcing the issue and the other team to make the play you also force them into mistakes.
Hate on me all you want, just the way I always played and what I like to see.
Seik1177 - May 16, 2009
Wow
in a game where the teams combine for 26 hits and 18 runs, I have two fantasy hitters in the entire game, and they go a combined 1 for 9 with a lousy single.
And Kendry rode the pine, albeit for hitters who did okay tonight.
Caseys Kiss of Death - May 15, 2009
I kind of feel like we won this game
Played as bad as we can and almost pulled it out.
vladtheimpaler - May 15, 2009
Almost pulling out = happy fathers day!

lol i see what you did there.

Rev Halofan - May 15, 2009
From FML...
“Today, I had drunk sex with a girl that I barely know. I didn’t have a condom and was nervous about getting her pregnant, but she assured me that I could pull out. Right when I was about to pull out, she wrapped her legs around me and yelled : “BE MY BABY’S DADDY!” I couldn’t get out in time. FML"
Yep, happy father’s day, dude…

damn tough recap
I cannot be mad at Joe. He has really given us a lot lately. You can’t win ‘em all. He has a bad history in Texas. It happens. The three run homer by the Cuban missile launcher on like the third pitch from O’Day was one of my favorite things of the season. That was awesome. O’Day pulled his hat down so far when he was exiting off the mound. As for Howie, man. It’s hard to decide that do with the guy. Wish Abreu was playing a little better too. Teams like Texas that have young guys excelling really makes we want to see Brandon Wood out there. Kinsler is sick.
Also, I was watching some Yankee highlights (on ESPN!) and Tex made a grab at first on a play that was identical to Hamilton’s early triple. Love Kendry at the plate, but there is no doubt the Angels feel the loss with the glove there. Kendry needs to trust his ability more when going for those balls. Seems like he always gives up on them. Go lets go Lackey.
TheAngelsAngels - May 15, 2009
I agree, I cant help but see Kinsler as our Wood...
Make the call Sociosia!
BryanHarvey'sMoustache - May 15, 2009
I respectfully disagree...
I was going to throw up fail pic, but coming back after that deficit at the very least sends a message. Yes, it was one of those games where nothing was going the Angels way. I was just about to turn off the game in the 8th. After the rally in the 9th started, I couldn’t help but go back and remember the wise words of my sensei Mr. Miyagi…
3rd Echelon - May 15, 2009
that is a great quote

Reactionary Comment against HK
Send him packing along with Chone. Send Izzy to 2b and Wood at 3b. Lets go!!!!
BryanHarvey'sMoustache - May 15, 2009
Howie is Overated !
How much more does Sosh need to see to realize he just can’t handle pressure! So much potential, but Howie can’t relax and trust his true abilities enough to overcome himself focusing on his buttcheeks clinching up everytime the team needs him.
This has Scioscia written all over it! It seems to me that Mike has held on too long to players like our interchangeable thing 1 & thing 2 shortstops (Izzy & Aybar). Trade one of them already! And now it’s Howie (Scioscia) holding up some fine young potential talent in the minors: Wood/Rodriguez (and I know I’m missing another) who could be getting the opportunity to prove their worth in the infield.
Sosh just can’t let go of his faulty philosophy of letting the hottest player at the infield position continue playing because, we have a “Veteran” player who we need to keep happy because of the seniority factor Sosh beleives he has earned.
Screw all of that. For once, it would be nice to see Sosh pull an non-producing/struggling player and insert our AAA talent and if that call-up is doing better than the player he replaced, HE STAYS!!!! If this is truly a Sosh team, than they should all be pulling for everyone to succeed, regardless of how long they’ve been in the big leagues and on the team. This has Scioscia written all over it. So I guess if Scioscia has one fault to him, this one is the most glaringly obvious.
Something tells me Scioscia would not be a fun guy to hang around in Vegas.
