Angels Beat Red Sox In Extra Innings; Santana Makes Debut

The Los Angeles Angels celebrate their extra inning win over the Boston Red Sox Thursday afternoon.

The Los Angeles Angels celebrate their extra inning win over the Boston Red Sox Thursday afternoon.

Final Score:  Angels 5, Chowds 4

In a game that saw 5 Angels relievers and Ervin Santana's 2009 season debut, Jeff Mathis won it with a 12th inning single scoring pinch-runner Reggie Willits.  The Angels bullpen held the Red Sox to one run over 7 innings, the one run given up by struggling Scot Shields, giving the Red Sox new life with a run in the 8th.

Santana was inconsistent in his debut, giving up 3 runs, 7 hits and 3 walks through 5 innings (92 pitches; 52 strikes, 40 balls).  However, he showed he is still able to get the strikeout as he sat down 5 Sox, including David Ortiz with the bases loaded to end the 4th inning.

Torii Hunter, Erick Aybar, and Bobby Abreu each hit triples in the game, while Hunter was a homer shy of the cycle, driving in 3 runs.  The big hit came off the bat of Mathis in the 12th ending the game and giving the Halo's the series win.  The RBI single was Mathis' second run driven in in the game, as he'd previously tied the game in the 7th with a sacrifice fly to score Aybar.

The Angels' bullpen, after a season of struggles, held the Red Sox scoreless in extra-innings, including Jason Bulger getting out of a bases loaded two out  jam in the 12th by striking out Dustin Pedroia and getting David Ortiz to ground out to first.  With the bases jammed ground out, Ortiz added 3 more runners left on base, giving him 12 in the game, including 3 strikeouts.

The win gives the Angels an 18-15 record, a game-and-a-half behind division leading Texas Rangers, who the Halos face this weekend in Arlington.

Jeff Mattress.....

for finally ending that…….

Thank you good sir.

plus.......

he’s totally gonna get laid now.

great nick name

Mattress!

"Tori"

Panther

Thanks Jeffy

But my panther has got to go to HULA DULa..dude was nails on offense and defense and that play he made in the 11th, holy shit!

hula dula was being hula dula

Jeff was BEYOND his usual

i dunno mathis has hit quite a few in the clutch

and just because hula dulas average is panther doesnt mean we shouldn’t vote for his average.

Well than any time he gets a hit much less an RBI he will get my vote.
That's what he do, every day.

Jeff came through in the ultimate clutch situation when nobody else quite could.

Intense

If I could vote all 4 for Panther, I would. Had to close my eyes and click.

Shields needs to get his shit together.

Jeff called a good game.

Minus Shields.

Worst tat’s I’ve ever seen…

Army guy alert, where's pendletonmike? LOL

They are not the best I have ever seen either but they seem to fit Santana’s personality.

I’m an army guy, but not pendletonmike… and I hope he’s an army guy stationed there and not a marine, otherwise he may not like that nick name for him, lol.

I'm pretty sure pendletonmike

acquired his name from the camp.

or maybe from this guy

At first

I thought he was a grunge rocker.

Panther = Torii

Bulger got himself into trouble to get himself out of. But the whole pen played well tonight.

I've got to vote for Bulger

but what a great team effort

did the pen pitch well or not!!!?!?!

Finally!

Hula Dula extra innings rula

Was awesome, but Mathis won the game today, and Bulger managed to not lose. Co-Panthers perhaps?

Mathis is the emotional vote

Had you guys waited until tomorrow, you’d realize the Hula Dula is the Panther Tru-a!

Tru-a?

Yeah I struggle.

I gotta give it to my boy Mathis

Called a great game (14 K’s), made a good borderline great play in the top of the 12th, and had the game winning hit.

Gotta go with Mathis

Game winning hit and drove in the go ahead run in the 7th

Yea, I'm the only one not to get a point yesterday!

I so rock.

Not.

It’s about time…. Soon, I shall climb to the top and I shall CRUSH YOU ALL!!!!!!!

[laughter type="maniacal-mad-scientist]
BWAHAHAHAHHA!!! HAH HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!
[/laughter]

grats

PGP is gonna end up looking pretty ugly at the end, i forecast myself dropping 25 spots at the rate im tanking

If you're not in the top twenty by now............well you just are'nt.
hey scott

i didn’t get any points, and i was the first to turn in my picks.. any idea what happened?

I watched this in a bar with nothing but frat-boy Sux fans...

Felt damn good to walk out of there after four ice-teas and a near heartattack.

Figures they'd win it the instant I look away from the computer.

GO HALOS!!!!!!!!!

Nice win!

Jar Jar Shields
Maxie big

The blown holds, leads and save opportunities.

I agree with that little guy named Dustin...
“That was a great play,” Pedroia said. “That’s why he’s got a truckload of Gold Gloves [eight]. He saved the game for them and kept them going. That’s why he’s the best.”
Older Sox fans...

…were less drunk than the young guys usually are, but they were just as obnoxious.
They bitched about every call that didn’t go their way.
They cussed out their players if they didn’t do what they expected.
One guy was so upset Francona brought in Okajima, he stormed out of the stadium, throwing F-bombs all the way.
I guess you can sober up but you can’t stop being an A-Hole.

those are called MASS-HOLES
Jeff Mathis

Lets not forget the fact that if Rivera had not singled first then the pinch runner, who knows what might have happened. So I give Rivera credit for starting the sequence of events.
Good Job Angels
