Final Score in Los Angeles of Anaheim: Red Sox 4, Angels 8
ATTENDANCE: 35,666
Angels pitcher Matt Palmer was shaky in the first two innings against the Red Sox, allowing four runs. When he finished the game tonight, he had retired 19 straight Red Stocking batters, had his 4th major league win and first complete game. He told postgame television interviewer Jose Mota that Mike Scioiscia said "No More" when he returned to the dugout after allowing the fourth Boston run in the 2nd inning. talk about a player who listens to his manager.
On a night after a demoralizing bullpen implosion it seemed it would be an early night for the 30-year old rookie. But the Angel bats took over, stomping veteran manicurist Tim Wakefield for five runs in the 3rd inning for a lead that would never be relinquished. A 3-run homerun by Mike Napoli to the deepest part of centerfield let Palmer know that he was not alone.
The Boston Red Sox were obviously feeling fat and lazy over their 4-0 lead and with Wakefield, 93, their best pitcher on the mound, who could blame them knowing the bullpen of doom awaited them behind Door Number One were they to knock Palmer off his perch. But it was not meant to be as he allowed only 1 hit in the final 7 innings and stuffed a complete game down Pink Hat Nation's beer-sotted throat.
Every Angel in the lineup had a hit and Reggie Willits, starting his first game of the season in place of a sore Gary Matthews Jr., had two. Kendry Morales was 3-5, Torii Hunter hit a monster homerun for insurance and even lowly Erick Aybar beat out a bunt for a single. Aybar and Chone Figgins combined to leave 9 men on base in the game. Meanwhile, in Salt Lake City, Brandon Wood was 3 for 4 with 2 HR in a 13-12 win for the SLC Bees. Wood is the heir apparent to Aybar or Figgins. Apparent to everyone on planet earth except Angels manager Mike Scioscia.

Question: Can we win without a CG?
or a miracle catch by Torii?
Yet to be seen.
BryanHarvey'sMoustache - May 13, 2009
haha Well That Miracle Catch by Torii
Was a greatly pitched Bullpen Game.

When was the last time someone pitched a complete game win giving up 4 runs?
That last pitch was David Cone sidearm slider filthy.
The slider that got Bay was as sick as any K Rod slider.

Unreal, Mr. Palmer
Comin out of nowhere like that! Retiring 19 straight! Enjoy the ride buddy.
Can we get Stu Lantz a permanent seat behind the rock pile? 3rd game in attendance, 3rd CG. Hmm…
ReggieBullits - May 13, 2009
No question at all. Matt Palmer for Panther.
So happy for this guy. He did an interview with Roger Lodge last week and he just seemed like the coolest, most blue-collar guy. Damn, I frickin love when these minor league journeymen hit the jackpot. Thanks, Matt.
Higz - May 13, 2009
Paraphrasing his post-game interview with Mota:
“…I was scared. Sosh said ‘no more of that’ so I was scared” or something like that. Haha…brillaint.
ReggieBullits - May 13, 2009
Yeah, that was funny
You could tell he was so stoked. I was waiting for Torii to sneak up with a shaving cream special.
Higz - May 13, 2009
Big Angels win
And nothing on mlb.com. Bastards!
anaheimisnotla - May 13, 2009
It was there, then they took it down.
It was first actually. Guess they don’t want to offend the Sux
Big Bad, 'Vlad'! - May 13, 2009
Unreal Recovery
to the first 2 innings. Its funny, in the RHP thread my title to the picks was “We need a CG Palmer!” and he came through! Friggin awesome, maybe I should do that more often…
OT – but everytime I hear Palmer’s name for some reason the nickname Honey Roy always pops in my head from Diggstown.
Great game on the mound today though (19 in a row!) – definitely Panther to Matt
gorams77 - May 13, 2009
POTG Palmer
Another CG for our starters, one less chance for the bully to implode, and we get Santana back tomorrow!!!
halofolife - May 13, 2009
Palmer
Anytime a pitcher throws a CG in this day and age of pitch counts, it’s gotta be him.
By the way, what’s an “Agel bat”?
red floyd - May 13, 2009

I just flew in from San Jose...
When I boarded my plane up there it was 6-4 Halos. By the time I came in over OC it was dark, and I was tracking my location by the freeway landmarks. We flew down the coast and swung into the county over Huntington ebach and Westminister, making a track North to turn around over the City of Orange. I realized that my path was going to take me directly over the stadium. Sure enough, at 10:10pm, I was looking down from a couple thousand feet on the parking lot still being vacated. The field was still aglow. And then, into my field of view through my tiny little window came the halo, all lit up! Beautiful.
Stirrups - May 13, 2009
You flew directally over me in Huntington ebach.
cheers

was at the game tonight
actually, a few rows IN FRONT of where Torii’s homer landed, which tells you how far that freaking thing went.
Palmer scared me in the first 2 innings, but I couldn’t believe how awesome he was after he settled in.
I was surrounded by Boston fans (imagine my joy in the first 2 innings), so when Nappy hit his moonshot, I was the first one jumping up and screaming, then looking for Angel fans to high-five. Such a great feeling.
Great game tonight, guys. Can’t wait for our rotation to finally be back together!
howiestheman - May 14, 2009
I was there too
Nap’s homer was perfectly timed
to make some blowhard Sux fan look stupid after laughing at the swinging strike before.
I stood up and screamed, “there ya go asshole!”

All these Boston fans at the stadium
These must be transplanted Easteners, right? I’m wondering why there are so many.
vladtheimpaler - May 14, 2009
yeah they're transplants

lightupthat420 - May 14, 2009

You’re saying they are Orange County folk turned traitor?
vladtheimpaler - May 14, 2009

I was at the game...
and I have to give Panther to Naps simply because seeing that HR in person was awe-inspiring…. I am soo happy Palmer is our number 5 guy cause it kinda reminds me of Donelly(sp?) and his minor league magic… todays game was awesome as we finally shut up the chowd fans as they were silent from the 2nd onwards….
Go Halos
