Final Score in Anaheim: Red Sox 4, Angels 3
The Angels players can take solace in knowing their pathetic effort Tuesday night was witnessed by the smallest evening crowd in Anaheim since 2004, as under 34,000 fans were on hand to witness a Jered Weaver pitching gem turn into a sloppy bullpen implosion and ultimate defeat. With a Laker playoff game, a Ducks hockey playoff game and new episode of American Idol, the bodies were elsewhere tonight and that might be a good thing for the health of the franchise, as this is the type of demoralizing loss that Mike Scioscia might insist that his players forget but that fans recall when they decide to not buy tickets to upcoming games.
The team took a 3-1 lead into the top of the 8th but Jose Arredondo loaded the bases and ended up with 2 ER charged to him when Darren Oliver hit David Ortiz with the bases loaded. Scot Shields joined the unraveling with a double given up in the top of the 9th to Jason Varitek - previously batting .231 until Shields made him look like Ty Cobb.
Angel bats were weak all night but managed 2 sac flies and a base hit RBI each in 3 separate 1-run innings. It looked like it would be the Angels night when Juan Rivera threw out Jacoby Ellsbury at the plate with a beautiful block by Catcher Jeff Mathis.
Jonathan Papelbon got the save with a mile-wide strike zone.

why does our bullpen suck?
ihearhowie2.0 - May 12, 2009
I blame Hatcher.
Funke5ive - May 12, 2009
Once again, Weave should have stayed in the game.
Boo hoo to all you pitch count freaks. I’m interested in W’s.
Big Bad, 'Vlad'! - May 12, 2009
pitch count dude.

oops
Meant to say I’d buy that more if he didn’t overwork his bullpen by having them throw a super small amount of pitches and then leave the game because Arredondo has to start the 8th or Fuentes has to start the 9th.
MH252525 - May 12, 2009
Imagine how pissed off frankie would be
if he was still in our bullpen

Is that a spitball?
Funke5ive - May 12, 2009
Sorry Weaver. thats what the pen should say.
pendletonmike - May 12, 2009
What is it about the bosux?
I’m a firm believer that this shit is mental. We’ve been doing better of late, the bully included, and the chowds come to town, and we fall apart. At this point what do we even have a bullpen for? Sucks for WTY, yet another starter screwed over by our supposed relievers.
halofolife - May 12, 2009
we owned them last year in the regular season...
maybe we need to get owned in the regular then own THEM in the playoffs. Turn the tables for once.

Can we start calling it the BLOWpen yet?
AND if anyone hasnt noticed, our bats are quiet again. All those wins against the Royals came from very very small scores. (Sure we faced Greinke and Meche but Masterson?? C’mon!)
BryanHarvey'sMoustache - May 12, 2009
BLOWpen sounds about right
halofolife - May 12, 2009
According to Terry Smith
Unless, I heard wrong (which is always possible since I have ADD) the bullpen is now 2-9
stolenbases - May 12, 2009
That is correct...
9 losses! they had 22 all last year and already have 9! Disturbing…
angelskid2210 - May 12, 2009
The only ab I was upset with from Arredondo was the walk to Lugo
Green hit a good pitch that if we had a good RF in then it’s probably a liner right at him. Abreu was playing FAR too deep for that situation.
Then he gets ahead of Ellsbury with the split and trys to triple up with it to get him out. So then Ellsbury has to know a fastball is coming 3-2 and so of course he hits that.
I voted Abreu for playing so deep in RF and also for not getting a clutch hit when needed.
MH252525 - May 12, 2009
oh man
eight innings of the lead to blow it again? how many loses is that just from bullpen implosions this year. it would have been so awesome this year is we didnt have 2/3 of the ridiculous blowups. despite everything that has happened we would have a great record and people would be saying how the angels can withstand anything. instead, the bullpen have become major choke artists ad ruined it for everyone. if i were the angels i would go full metal jacket on these turds and just beat the shit out of them with bags of soap one night. it may be the only thing that turns it around for them.
the offense was just as shitty. what the hell is going on with abreu? since May 5th—>0-5, 1-3 (!), 0-4, 0-4, 0-3, 0-0 (four walks), 0-3 today. jesus. thats tough to have out of the three hole. the surplus of singles was pretty gay but ill take those over nothing. also, i read today that kendrick swings at pitches outside of the strike zone 40% of the time. jesus. and apparently aybar is dead last in the majors in pitches seen. thank god for mathis which is a pathetic thing to say.
and i agree. weaver should have stayed in. arredondo looks like he could give a shit hat happens on the mound. just as long as he gets free meals and lodging. you think he would have at least taken that away from frankie.
pathetic loss matched with texas victory. woohoo. go angels.

On a brighter side
Ervin Santana is starting thursday against the Red Cocks!!
angelskid2210 - May 12, 2009
and Lackey the day after :D
pendletonmike - May 12, 2009
That's right
and I don’t care about the bullpen…we get out leader and ace back along with our 2nd ace and now add that to our other two Ace potential guys and im excited. We will for sure be the best 7 inning team in baseball the problem is we play 9 now…lol let’s kick some ass!

turned out to be a bad seat
Rev Halofan - May 13, 2009
why dont we make a move?
i know we have two huge pieces coming back, but our bullpen needs serious help. why not danys baez on the orioles? he is nails and has recently been identified as available. he would be an amazing addition and instantly help our bullpen.
the way the angels treat some of there players is just straight up wrong. willits has one official at bat and two plate appearances this year? he batted .293 his rookie year and came in sixth. this is how they treat him? angels need to take the way, way surplus players like willits or one of the shortstops (aybar!) or some of our AAA players that are clearly never going to get a shot to play but still good and trade them for something we need. which is obviously bullpen.
TheAngelsAngels - May 12, 2009
Danys baez sucks
Big Bad, 'Vlad'! - May 12, 2009
might as well have Joan Baez pitch
stolenbases - May 12, 2009
guess what
so does our bullpen. his 2.5 ERA and .84 WHIP is f’n sparkling compared to ANY of our guys. (well not oliver)
TheAngelsAngels - May 12, 2009
yeah but
in a month when his era is 5.00 you will be glad we didn’t…
Rev Halofan - May 12, 2009
maybe so
but im also not going to be happy about a 4-15 bullpen record either. oliver was not exactly a hot commodity when we got him either. he turned out pretty decent for us.
TheAngelsAngels - May 12, 2009
oh yah
jepsen gave up like five runs again last night. bringing his ERA to a cool 10.80 in AAA. 3 walks and 2 homers too.
and also i forgot to mention. my favorite pitch of the night was bulgers first batter when the red sox runner got to third. wow. 92 mph straight into the backstop. but hey, who doesnt want to trust the young and unproven, especially when their job is to come in with the job on the line.
TheAngelsAngels - May 12, 2009
If Baez was so good
He would be the closer right now in Baltimore. Their closing situation right now is pretty shaky as we speak. They are going with a closer by committee setup and if Baez was so “nailsy” then they would probably hand the job right over to him.
turs12 - May 13, 2009
HAHA! they want to
shows what you know. they said they would put they need him for the role he is in. if the rotation by committee goes as bad as things were they are going to, until they deal him at leas. he has like over 150 career saves.
and i never said he was so good so relax, just a possible improvement.
don’t take it from me…
“Danys Baez, RP – $5.5MM this year. He missed all of ‘08, but Baez is having a nice year in his first 18 innings. The O’s have handled him carefully, as he ranks fourth in their bullpen in Leverage. He appears to be the most likely trade candidate on the team, and the cost shouldn’t be much beyond paying his salary.”
“Trembley pointed to Sherrill’s struggles getting right-handed batters out – they are hitting .394 against him with three homers in 33 at-bats – as a reason for the change. He said right-handers Jim Johnson and Chris Ray could get save chances but that Danys Baez will stay in his current role and be used as a bridge to get to the back end of the bullpen.”

Maybe Santana, Lackey and Escobar should all go to the pen when they come back.

Dude, I wrote it and I just got.
Rev Halofan - May 13, 2009
Glad I wasnt the only one who noticed they were giving PapelBum a strike zone roughly the width off the artic circle
HaloDutch - May 13, 2009
Scott,
When I posted my picks, they were 6-1-N, and I had checked the googledoc.
This morning I checked the original pick sheet and they showed 10-0-N.
Not that I’m objecting to the extra point, but something got whacked out on the googledoc.
red floyd - May 13, 2009
And Shields had Papi struck out.
WTF was with the zone there?
red floyd - May 13, 2009
I didn't have my coffee yet
I meant Bay (on the groundout RBI).
