Final Score in Los Angeles of Anaheim: Angels 3, A's 0
Angels All-Star Lefthander Joe Saunders showed no signs of regression on the mound as his opening day start at Angel Stadium Monday night was a dominant performance over the division rival Oakland Athletics.
Put a brick on the stadium entrance pitching mound for Hokie Joe, as Juan Rivera, Vlad Guerrero and Howie Kendrick tossed in two hits each, one of Howie's was a solo HR to the formerly cheap seats. Bobby Abreu got his only hit of the night in his first plate appearance.
The Athletics threatened, but a great slap of leather by Shortstop Erick Aybar on a groundball caught former team mate Orlando Cabrera too far off of 2nd Base. Kendrick applied the tag on the veteran and Aybar could have quoted Darth Vader to Obi Wan: "Cabrera, you were once the master and I the pupil but now I am the master."
Brian Fuentes made his debut wearing a Halo with a 1-2-3 9th inning for the save.

I love the game by Howie.
But Joe “What is this ‘Regression’ you speak of” Saunders gets the Panther.
TheOptimist - April 6, 2009
+1. Howie was great. Saunders even better.
sothball - April 6, 2009
Agreed.
Big assist to Howie, and the defense by Figgy, Aybar et al, but gotta give it to the Colonel when it’s all said and done. Second straight season with a Shutout his first start.

1866 Baseball say:
All my friend study this match in detail. We can find no flaw in luminous performance of Angels team, which is now my our favourite team. The Oakland team showed no resistance power. Giambi-san must need to sit in dugout where luminous brother sat, perhaps on syringe of luminous resistance power.
My friend and I tip our noodle to “Jokie Ho” Sanders and his crispy chicken pitches.

Feels good to win, feels extra special good to win on Day 1 and feels extra super special to know the bats will be better than they were tonight.
Learn youngsters, learn what it takes to hold a division rival to 0 runs on 3 hits. And especially learn what a “quick inning” means. IF popups rule.

Totally drunk now at the end of my 23rd birthday
and it makes me so willing and able to say nice things about everyone, but no one is awake anymore.
Great thing about a birthday on April 6th is that the Angels have opened on my birthday on a handful of occasions in recent memory. Great to get a win to help me celebrate the B-Day with some friends and some booze.
P.S. since i’m not my usual dick self right now, I want to say thanks to this awesome blog for almost 3 years of dedicated service to alleviating my boredom. Rev, you run a great show, and 99% of you are awesome contributors, even in disagreement. 162-0, here we come.

No beer
only SoCo (the college student in me).
Actually, it’s as much the drunken-ness as it is the childish kid in me just pumped to have the beginning of the season start after a freakin’ 6 month wait. The first day of baseball is more a holiday to me than, say, Easter ever has been. And a win? Icing on the cake. I’ve been telling my friends since September that Saunders is not a fluke.

PhiSlamma - April 7, 2009
Good Win, But...
Some less-than-impressive D. Kendrick made that error and both Rivera and Aybar misjudged some borderline foul balls. The A’s kept it close thanks to their darn good defense; there were 3-4 plays I’m not sure the Angels would have made. Thank Arte that Torii’s patrolling center.
Kernel - April 7, 2009
I bet Aybar/Morales make the throw-and-catch on Guerrero's grounder.
Also, the pickoff of OC at second. They actually HAD a chance to do the same thing (against a much slower Rivera), and didn’t. Ellis wasn’t as heads-up as Howie.
Zu Long - April 7, 2009
I was surprised
that it wasn’t ruled an error. Nomar had it and dropped it. I could see it being scored E-6 or E-3, but was very surprised to see it ruled a hit.
red floyd - April 7, 2009
that WAS an error all the way. But, you gotta get Vladdy started on that march to 100 ribbies somehow.
Downing Rules - April 7, 2009
The problem was, if it was an error, who was it on.
Because the ball was so deep in the hole, to expect a SS to make the play at all was unreasonable. Since OC did make a play and make a throw, albeit on the grass, it wouldn’t have been fair to charge him with an error on the play. Nomar maybe should have picked it but you cant really charge you with an error either. Got to be a hit.
Halo84653 - April 7, 2009
Error can be charged to OC or Mr Hamm...
however, the throw was right there and had Vladdy beaten by a step or two. No way you cannot charge an error when the throw gets there ahead of the runner. I could see your point if Vladdy had nearly beaten the throw, but no … he was out by ~ 5,280 feet on that play. ;)
Downing Rules - April 7, 2009
while I agree that Kendrick's error on the DP ball was bad you are nuts
about the “misjudged” “borderline” foul balls. Give me a break.
Halo84653 - April 7, 2009
Both were catchable
Both were not caught. When I say “borderline”, I mean that they were catchable. I know that Aybar’s wasn’t far from new fan seating, but it was still catchable, and Rivera showed his limited range as well.
Figgins played some excellent 3B, though.
Kernel - April 7, 2009
The A's missed a "catchbable" foul ball in right due to Jack Cust being slow.
Zu Long - April 7, 2009
Favorite defensive blunder I saw in person last year was cust blowing a catch on a lazy liner … it was a thing of beauty. Unfortunately, Custy got the last laugh with a game-winning jack later in the same game.

TheOptimist - April 7, 2009
Go look at the left or right sidebar under “game threads.” My guess is that Rev doesn’t want to clutter the front page with game threads only with meaty content. Cheap filler moves to the sidebar.
