Final Score in Baltimore: Los Angeles Angels 7, Baltimore Orioles 5
The Angels began an eight game road trip with timely hitting and serviceable pitching to hold off the Orioles at Camden Yards in Baltimore. The Orioles led 4-2 at one point, shaking up Angel starter Joe Saunders, an alum of nearby Virginia Tech and a native of Falls Church, Virginia. Well it wasn't the civil war, as confederate Maryland fell to Virginia's latest major son.
The turning point came with another pitcher, though, Scot Shields (whose leadoff walk in the bottom of the 8th seemed to be the beginning of a recent Angel trend of blowing games wide open with bullpen implosions) got a visit on the mound from manager Mike Scioscia. Catcher Mike Napoli was privy to an animated lecture by the dean of the American League's managers. The lecture held and Shields' ERA is back to single digits (9.39) after his scoreless inning. Brian Fuentes gave up a solo homer to Adam Jones in an otherwise uneventful 9th inning for his 4th save as an Angel.
The Angels offense scored 7 runs for the 5th time in 6 games, a feat unlike any recent Angel offense. With bullpen implosions in so many of those games though, they are 3-3 in that past half-dozen. Howie Kendrick had a two-run homer to tie the game in the 4th inning and Kendry Morales had a ringing double down the line to add some insurance in the 7th.
That 7th inning saw Angels baserunners TWICE break a cardinal baseball rule as the first AND last outs were made at third base, with Morales attempting to stretcha double into a trinple as well as draw the throw away from the plate to ensure the 7th run scoring. The inning had led off with Chone Figgins attemoting to stretch a leadoff double into a triple as well. But the baseball gods seemed in a forgiving mood and allowed the bullpen to help the Halos open the roadtrip with a victory, which coupled with Sunday's homestand finale over Seattle added up to the first two-game winning streak of 2009.

Wooo Figgy panther.
norcaliangelsfan - April 28, 2009
Yah, I agree, Figgy for Panther!
Big Bad, 'Vlad'! - April 28, 2009
well I voted KMO........
having posted this before Rev finished puttng up the poll………there’s an argument for a few folks today……..
all in all a great win.
norcaliangelsfan - April 28, 2009
Panther:hmmm...Hokie joe struggled early, but finished strong.
vlad IS my man - April 28, 2009
i voted K-Mo
Figgi4life - April 28, 2009
well I vote KMO too.....
I woulda voted for Figgy….but both played good.
norcaliangelsfan - April 28, 2009
Why is it Panther?
Why not player?
Not complaining, I’m a Carolina Panther fan :)

I am unable to get that to work...

the link is on top of panther tattoo
vlad IS my man - April 28, 2009
ahhhh
thanks
Figgi4life - April 28, 2009
It was Figgy until he ran into an out at third
leftwing - April 28, 2009
I thnink it's pathetic that
Fuentes is up there…
Figgi4life - April 28, 2009
indeed
dmoney2741 - April 28, 2009
Then don't vote for him
IF you don’t value saves simply vote for someone else.
Rev Halofan - April 28, 2009
I value 1 run saves...
A 3 run lead should never be blown IMO. Anyway, just not voting for Fuentes. :-)
AlanFalcon - April 28, 2009
I value saves,
I just don’t think that K-Rod was on POTG each time HE got a save…
whatver. I voted for K-Mo anywho…
Figgi4life - April 28, 2009
man that was a source of many heated debates on here last year.......
it’s just opinions man……you vote for who you want….and all is good.
norcaliangelsfan - April 28, 2009
so wait...
he was on the POTG each time?
Interesting……
Figgi4life - April 28, 2009
no he wasnt...
which was part of the problem………some people value saves highly….others dont….so people were mad that Frankie hardly ever got any panthers……….which is why Rev went to more of a democracy voting decisions……..but even as you see now……there is always gonna be disagreements…….
Its kinda funny how we all can watch the same game……yet see different things…..thats the beauty of individuality.
norcaliangelsfan - April 28, 2009
I didn't actually watch...
the ninth, I didn’t watch any. I watched 1-8 on GD, but abandoned in the ninth. So, when I saw that Fuentes was up there, I went back and watched, but was suprised to see he did just what I thought he’d do…Nothing more nothing less…
But, I didn’t mind that he was up there, I was just suprised.
That’s the way it should be though. If him being up there is a result of a whole year’s worth of problems, he should be up there.
Figgi4life - April 28, 2009
and thats one of the main points people would bring up....
Frankie last year was “just doing his job” and thus people would argue the only way he could get a panther was to pitch more than 1 inning (which never happened) or strike out 4 in a inning…..or something along those lines…
needless to say……that debate came up alot…….as evidence by Frankie’s stellar statistical season last year
norcaliangelsfan - April 28, 2009
This is the case
for Fuentes’ inclusion. Well-stated, no matter which side of the argument you are on.

First time this season we've had consecutive wins!
can we make it a whopping THREE tomorrow?
BryanHarvey'sMoustache - April 28, 2009
Aybar
Can we have a blame of the game when we win?
ponusbaum43 - April 28, 2009
lol we should
the would have been BOTG
dmoney2741 - April 28, 2009
thats pointless lol
norcaliangelsfan - April 28, 2009
No
That’s silly.
TheTypingFiend - April 28, 2009
To be fair..
This game would have been a lot less close if it weren’t for his K, GIDP, error, and if he was Brandon Wood.
ponusbaum43 - April 28, 2009
true dat
dmoney2741 - April 28, 2009
Good thing we have Aybar in there for his D and OBP. :(
Halo84653 - April 28, 2009
Yeah -
I am tiring of the Aybar Experiment. He just doesn’t belong in MLB as a starter. He is a fine utility IF – can play 3 positions, I’m sure. But he can’t friggin’ hit and we have a kid that looked locked and loaded at the plate against the M’s the other day who has proved himself in AAA and deserves a shot to hit ML pitching everyday….
Everyday that Aybar is the starting SS is a condemnation on Scioscia for lack of imagination and valuing the wrong things in a ballplayer. Middle infielders were all glove, no hit in the 1980’s Mike – but the game evolved. Without you, I’m afraid.
jimmuscomp - April 29, 2009
Seconded
Maybe Sosh is coming around though. At least he’s starting Maicer at short today. Aybar benched according to the radio broadcast.

solid win
got 7 runs without having to rely on Torii hunter’s bat
dmoney2741 - April 28, 2009
Yeah
Good to see that we’ll win even if he doesn’t carry the team. Good to see him get the run home with a runner at third and less than two outs though!

but ScottNak the guy who posts em said he’s got some school work to do and probably wont post till later tonight

Gotta go with Figgins
2-3, double, 2 runs, 2BB, 2SB. Quite a night.
vladtheimpaler - April 28, 2009
Can't argue with that line.
The stolen bases really did a great job messing with the pitcher’s heads.
AlanFalcon - April 28, 2009
was quite a night......
It’s always better discussing a Panther…………rather than a blame though :)
norcaliangelsfan - April 28, 2009

FanGraphs
Has Morales running away as the best contributor tonight.
Good game:
AlanFalcon - April 28, 2009
is there an explanation somewhere on how fangraphs comes up with its findings?
Not that I disagree with it tonight……..just curious.
norcaliangelsfan - April 28, 2009
your two year old scribbles up and down and there you go... Fangraphs
cupie - April 28, 2009
LOL.
norcaliangelsfan - April 28, 2009
I've thought that before,
looking at the wierdness of it…..
Figgi4life - April 28, 2009
It's win probability. The K-Mo double...
made it about 85% sure that the Halos would win. Before that it was at about 65%.
Think about it – the game starts (left most part of X axis) with each team having a 50% shot at winning (the Y axis). As events unfold – that probability changes. The Mora single put the O’s at 75% chance to win – but that was the 3rd inning.
So as other stuff happens – the Howie HR for instance – the probability returns to just about 50%. Anyway, that K-Mo double made a one-run game a three-run game in the 7th inning. That really changes a teams’ chance of winning. Of course, Scot with one “T” tried his best to blow another gam, but K-Mo would not be denied.
jimmuscomp - April 29, 2009
If you look at WPA and the current score of the game...
You’ll see that you only have a +50% chance of winning when your team has the lead. You can get very close to 50% while down, say with no outs and the bases loaded, but as you get outs without scoring runs, your win probability will drop (you have much less chance of driving in the run with 2 outs than you did with 0 outs) … it actually makes a great deal of sense if you watched the game and the Fangraph together.
AlanFalcon - April 29, 2009
Right - I agree. I completely "get" it.
Our friend up-thread was asking about it – sorry if my response was confusing….
jimmuscomp - April 29, 2009
I was confusing. :-)
I should have responded to him, not you. My bad!
AlanFalcon - April 30, 2009
No problem...
jimmuscomp - April 30, 2009
Well
I think they coded retrosheet (all PBP data from like ever, or 1951, one of those two), and look at how each play in each situation correlates to a win, or something like that.Magic
anaheim angels - April 28, 2009
what I find weird is how KMO's WPA is so much greater than Figgy's.....
when Figgy’s overall stats were superior…..
I guess some stats are weighed more heavily than others.
norcaliangelsfan - April 28, 2009
WPA takes into account the importance of the situation. A two out double with a man on second in a tight game
will get a higher WPA than a one out double with a man on 2nd in a run away game.
http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/get-to-know-wpa/
Halo84653 - April 28, 2009
cool thats what I have been looking for thanks!
norcaliangelsfan - April 28, 2009
I'm pretty sure Figgins running into an out at third base
Means that FanGraphs sees that just like any other out (because, in a way, it really was), and without that double Figgins’ numbers aren’t quite as impressive. Still, I’m glad we’re being aggressive and forcing the other team’s defense to be perfect, and I don’t think FanGraphs gives points for potential.
AlanFalcon - April 29, 2009
well thats like saying without one of KMO's double......his numbers wouldnt have been as impressive either.
norcaliangelsfan - April 29, 2009
Huh?
KMO doubled productively. Figgins, before another batter came to bat, was out on the ball he hit. In terms of helping the team win, he contributed nothing on his double out-at-third.
AlanFalcon - April 29, 2009
Kendrick = panther
KMo and Figgy had big games too, but we really needed that HR when we were down 4-2 and Joe was struggling. It changed the whole game around.
