The Angels needed WTY to pitch deep into the game and they got it. He saved the bullpen from the troublesome 6th and 7th innings. Superb effort.
The first two games of this series showed that the Mariners could beat AAA pitching. Big deal. The Mariners success so far can be attributed to flukes and being lucky. Thus they have in fact been flucky. The M’s are 13th in the AL in both OBP and SLG. Their current record is 12-7, but their Pythag record is 10-9. These Angels need to hang in there, get back on track, and knock off this flucky Mariners team.
The 2009 Mariners have fundamentally changed the way they do things. Simply getting rid of Vidro and Sexson and replacing them with Griffey and Branyan is a huge upgrade. Plus they went all-out on OF defense in the off-season (currently ranked best in the AL, as per UZR/150).
But at the end of the day, I still like Ervin Santana’s credo from last year:
For whatever reason, the gods decided to send the 7 plagues our direction...
…over about a 4 week period of time (Lackey, Santana, setback to Escobar, Adenhart, Jepsen, Oliver, Vlad…). I doubt you could remove this many significant parts from ANY MLB team and improve on out current 6-11 record. Especially with the emotional wallop from Adenhart’s death.
Hopefully, there isn’t a new set of plagues headed our direction. If/when we get reasonably healthy, and if the offense steps up as it has the last 2 games, we should win the western division.
when all the parts are back. 7 runs or something like that per game this homestand is pretty encouraging. when the frontline pitchers get back, hopefully they replicate what WTY did. and even GMJ is contributing. can’t wait for this roadie coming up.
I really like what he’s bringing to the team right now. Solid D, and a nice approach
at the plate. He’s seeing alot of pitches and workin the counts. The guy seemed
like a punk earlier but I’m glad to have him now with Vlad out. He also gives more
versatility because correct me if I’m wrong wasn’t his big year with Texas as a
leadoff hitter? If Chone goes down again he could fill in well. We’ve been waiting
a while to see this guy.
jk, but it’s nice having him play the outfield instead of Vlad. If Soth is willing to keep Failbar’s bat in the lineup then why not Juice’s too? Vlad should strictly be DH the rest of the season.
No joke But… I have this feeling that Reagins is going to deal him by the trade deadline with a thumbs up from GMJ for guaranteed playing time. Can someone help me get rid of either feeling? (i.e. talk me out of wanting the shirt, or talk me out of thinking GMJ gets traded this year). Thanks!
The Weave looked good, Howie remembered what that wooden thing in his hands was, but how about Shields looking like he remembered where the plate was!!!! Think about it- the bats have been hot, the starting pitching is pretty good right now, and if we actually had a bullpen we would be sitting pretty- seeing some actual relief from Shieldsie and Fuentes was seriously cool.
My posts about Wood not being in the lineup have even exhausted me.
But yes the team is SO MUCH better with him in there. Just ask a pitcher
who he’d rather face..Aybar/Izturis or Wood. Give him the SS job..
HK played sharp today, and no doubt helped the Angels keep all the momentum from the start of the game … but the Mariners scored 8 and then 9 runs in the first two games of the series, keeping our offense from having much of a chance. We needed this pitching. We needed it so bad. HK is baby panther of the day.

You have to give the M's a little credit for the rebuilding job they did to get the team back up to snuff.

their pitching is better...
minus today of course.

Howie
Weaver has done what he has supposed to do while Howie was in a little funk, but came out of it on Sunday.
It seems like the Angels’ offense is turning around [even though the pitching still a sore point except for literally a couple of guys].

HGH bitches about not having a spot to play in spring training – but now he has a few months to play on a regular basis with Vlad out.
Hopefully Vlad comes back in due time, but I also hope HGH gets hot.
