Final Score in Los Angeles of Anaheim: Tigers 12, Angels 10
Are the Tiger bats this good or is the Angel bullpen this bad? That wasn't what the Disneyland-adjacent faithful were wondering as they headed toward the aisles in a chorus of grumbling boos and obscenities as the normally reliable Scot Shields made the 7th inning a 5 run affair, allowing 2 hits and 2 walks without getting an out, leaving Jose Arredondo holding the bag and inheriting some clunky fielding by infielders who see Brandon Wood closing in on their job and knowing Manager Mike Scioscia benched Howie Kendrick amidst the biggest slump of his professional career.
Joe Saunders was far far from the ace he has been billed as, allowing 5 runs in 5 innings. In fact, the only Angel pitcher of 6 in the game to not allow at least 1 Earned Run was the heretofore scorned Jason Bulger, whose scoreless 8th inning lowered his ERA 4.50 (from 18.00 to 13.50).
The Tigers slapped out 18 hits, but the Angels were not punchless, with 16 hits, but the demoralizing sight of Scot Shields reduced to walking in a run with no outs in an inning he started was psychological bombshell for the Los Angeles of Anaheim Nine.

Aybar is so freaking weak
can’t hit, can’t steal, can’t bunt and now he can’t field

good thing we're not using Wood, right?

So K-Mo's GIDP in the 9th
ended up being quite huge afterall. Go figure.
Caseys Kiss of Death - April 22, 2009
Yup......His 5 RBI's didnt do anything either, He is worthless!!!
acuda27 - April 22, 2009
Christ
can you please stop the paranoid, obsessive defending of the guy?
No one is slighting his performance for the night. No one is implying he is worthless. No one is suggesting he did nothing. No one said he sucks. No one said he should be cut.
It’s a simple, easy, acceptable, understandable observation…a double play that was hit into in the 9th inning proved, in the long run, to be more damaging than it appeared to be at the time it was hit. It has nothing to do with saying K-Mo is “bad” or worthless…it could have been an observation of any player, and happened to be about him because it was Morales who hit the damn ball. I can’t well just lie and say it was someone else who hit it, now can I?
We get it, you love Morales. Now stop the hyper-defensive stances for him. No one slighted him.
Caseys Kiss of Death - April 22, 2009

I was stoked that Kmo
got 5 ribbies. I was hoping for a little magic that might have erased GA’s name from the top of the franchise RBI-single game mark.

shields was one of my favorite players. now i cant stand it when there is any indication he will enter the game. so sad. this is brutal. even if we are “spoiled”, there is no fun in watching this. this is beyond just “not as good as it usually is”, this is last place team status. at least they hit well today, but hitting well in a loss means nothing because everyone knows there is a solid chance they will score two runs on five hits tomorrow.

Season Ticket Refund
Hey Rev, what information can you give me about this? I can’t sell my tickets to games I can’t attend because of the glut on Stubhub and now the team is melting down.

HungryHunter - April 23, 2009
See I would have sympathy for you
if say I just lost my job. Or my parents need help with the medical bills. Or something…you know real.
But I have zero sympathy for someone who buys season tickets and then looks to sell them when the team looks kinda bad. I hope you sell zero. I honestly do. I have nothing personal against you, just people who flee when the going gets tough.
linkbruin - April 24, 2009
link...
i agree with you if he is trying to make a profit, but …
it is really tough to attend 81 games. further, it is quite a financial outlay for 81 games worth of tickets. you just cannot give them away, unless you are buffered from the financial mess going on.
give the fella a break, he is only trying to make some cash back. however, that isn’t going to happen this year due to lack of spending cash for the common fan.
@ Hungry:
I would doubt there is a way to turn in your tickets. Everyone is turning them in … on stubhub. And they are not selling very well there. So, there are going to be a lot of “empty seat sellouts” this year, at least mid-week. My best bet is to offer really low prices at craigs list to at least get something. You are NOT going to get face value. I cannot count how many SSH are still trying to get face at this time.
Downing Rules - April 24, 2009
The profit thing is a whole another story
That I am also ok with. I understand the unfeasibility of attending all 81 games, my family had season tix through 2002. I know what its like. The problem I have is when “the team is melting down” and “I can’t sell my tickets,” so “I want a season ticket refund.” (all HungryHunter quotes). This I have a very big problem with. There is no emotional satisfaction if you’re not there for the entire ride, so instead you bail at the first sign of trouble. F that. Seriously.
The guys who buy tix for profit are also terrible. But the season will force down prices since aggregate demand will be down, and supply is going to shoot up. So not as worried about this year. But those guys also suck.

Two costly defensive plays would have saved a few runs in the 7th. I was also thinking the same thing as Hud before he said it but why not try and get hit in the foot when that ball started bouncing in the dirt to bring the tying run to the plate. The ball was low enough to where it might not have hurt him that much and lord knows he wasn’t going to get on base any other way in that situation.

ItsNapTime - April 22, 2009
A question to someone who attended the game...
what was the distraction on the field (center?) during Shields’ appearance? Guys, if you are going to run on the field and play “dodge the cops” do it when the OTHER TEAM is pitching. Shields didn’t need that distraction.
Maybe that person is the true blame of the game. Just throwin’ it out.
Downing Rules - April 22, 2009
Erick Aybar Sucks.
All this talk last spring about what a defensive phenom he was. What a joke.
This is something that happens with certain players. They make some flashy plays, and then they’re anointed as some kind of defensive wizard. What goes by the boards is the fact that they cannot consistently make the solid plays on an inning by inning basis. You watch the player long enough and see that he simply is not fundamentally sound.
That’s Aybar.
goodvibe61 - April 23, 2009
+1
he should be #3 on our depth chart behind Wood and Izzy.

Can I get a group discount if I buy one for everyone on the Angels 25 man roster?
This year we score runs when we can’t play defense, and get pitching gems when we can’t score runs…
This is because of all those people calling us “lucky” for all those years, isn’t it?

TheAngelsAngels - April 23, 2009
hmm.
maybe it’s because our best pitchers are lined up against other teams best pitchers? i think thats the way rotations work. so when our best pitchers pitch gems, theirs are too, and when our lesser pitchers are pitching, we’re hitting off their back end of the rotation as well..
b0rd3rline - April 23, 2009
Nah - not in these games so far this year.
Our best pitchers, for one, are on the DL. Soth didn’t even bother trying to line up matchups for the season because, frankly, there wasn’t much to line up – As much as I like our starting staff, you can’t really say that Soth was excited to start Dustin Moseley against Becky – thankfully our bullpen didn’t feel like giving up a seven run inning that night. Saunders, our opening day starter, and one of our top two current pitchers, gave up five runs in five innings. And left with the lead. And we scored 10 runs. And we lost.
AlanFalcon - April 23, 2009
My Picks = Epic Fail
