Final Score: Los Angeles Angels 2, Seattle Mariners 3 (10 innings)
In what's becoming an early season theme, the Angels were unable to score with 2 outs. Leaving a total of 7 runners in scoring position and a total of 11 runners left on base, the Angel offense wasted a good outing by #7 starter Shane Loux. Making his first major league start since August 27, 2003, Loux allowed just 2 runs over 5.1 innings, scattering 5 hits and issuing 3 walks.
Also wasted in the game was a dominating 3 innings by Darren Oliver. Rumored to be moving into the Halo rotation, Oliver entered the game in the bottom of the 6th, stranding Griffey, Jr. who had walked to lead-off the inning. Oliver then worked out of a small jam in the 7th when Kenji Johjima led off with a single to center and was bunted over to second. The inning ended when Yuniesky Betancourt grounded out and Endy Chavez flew out. Looking like he still had plenty left in the tank, a good sign if a move to the rotation is in his future, Oliver struck out the side in the 8th inning before giving way to Scot Shields in the 9th..
All the best pitching in the world will go to waste unless the Angels start getting the timely hits. Having scored 4 or less runs in five of their first seven games, the Halo offense sputters with runners on base. Other than a monster home run to leftfield by Torii Hunter (his 2nd of the year), the Angels' bats have remained silent when it counts. Howie Kendrick stranded 5, three of which came from an inning-ending strike out with the bases loaded in the 5th inning, and Kendry Morales failed to drive in any runs with the based loaded in the 8th when he popped out weakly to second to end the inning.
Relieving Oliver in the bottom of the 9th, Scot Shields allowed a lead-off double to Franklyn Gutierrez to open the 10th. Betancourt laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt along the third base line, which Shields threw into right field allowing Gutierrez to score the winning run.

K-mo gets my vote.......
love the guy…….but he’s gotta start hitting with people on base………
Same with the rest of the O………I feel like the team is 0-2000 with RISP and 2 outs this year……..
Get em tomorrow.
norcaliangelsfan - April 14, 2009
even despite the RBI
vlad should be an option for that GIDP
ihearhowie2.0 - April 14, 2009
That's my vote too.
0 for 4 and a GIDP.
Turks Teeth - April 14, 2009

OH........silver lining.......
D-nasty with his awesome job in relief……..
norcaliangelsfan - April 14, 2009
Great pitching by Loux...
…with a little run support, he coulda been a winna!
sothball - April 14, 2009
tell me more...
.. about this thing you call “run support”
clover_black - April 14, 2009
LOL +1
Figgi4life - April 14, 2009
It's where...
…I mean it’s when…um… it works like this…I meant to say…when the offense…that would be when we are at bat…they..um…
TRUMP.
sothball - April 14, 2009
It was great to see Loux perform well
Maybe its his story, but I always find myself pulling hard for that guy

Run Support
I find your ideas intriguing and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter.
red floyd - April 14, 2009
In the silver lining department...
…I’m going to continue my jag of praise for Legs Figgins. Two more walks today put him at ELEVEN in seven games. Tied for the MLB lead in walks. Gotta like that.
Turks Teeth - April 14, 2009
BOTG - Angels Bats
seriously, where’s the spring training balls raining down all over the place?
teopeht - April 14, 2009

norcaliangelsfan - April 14, 2009
The difference between MLB pitching and almost MLB pitching...
sothball - April 14, 2009
that's what it seems
Moondoggy - April 14, 2009
most of those bats are in AAA
LosAngel - April 14, 2009
If we had the bats moving in the right direction,
it never would have come down to Shields pitching/having the opportunity to give the fans behind first base a ball
ladybug - April 14, 2009
not gonna beat anyone scoring 2 runs.........very often
norcaliangelsfan - April 14, 2009
it seemed like anything the Angels hit today
went straight up in the in field

Results up!
No Mercy rule-adherement is in effect!

one lousy point??? pfffft!!
ladybug - April 14, 2009
77-85
projected angels record if this keeps up
our bullpen has clearly regressed which was what let us score less than 5 runs a game and our hitting id just as shitty. it is a joke to score 3 runs against silva. it own tbe much easier than this all year. if we dont start hitting, we wont win the west. simply put. brandon wood needs to come inject some life into this lineup. anything other than status quo. please.
TheAngelsAngels - April 14, 2009
not to nitpick or anything.....
but they only scored 2 off silva
norcaliangelsfan - April 14, 2009
Well...
it would be a joke to score three runs. And a funnier one at that, as we’d at least win the game.
AlanFalcon - April 15, 2009
If Brandon Wood is the answer, what was the question?
OR if Brandon Wood is the answer, we really are in deep doo doo.

I think the team needs to have batting practice
ladybug - April 14, 2009
How do you get a rec for this?????
“I think the team needs batting practice”…and you get a rec? W-T-F??
Uh…OK…
I think the pitchers need to throw more strikes and less balls. One rec please…
I think the offense needs to hit more home runs. Another rec please…
Oh…I modify the above… I think the Angels need to hit at least 4 home runs per inning. One more rec please…no…make that 2 more rec’s!!!
You have GOT to be kidding me!!! Are you rec’ing yourself…paying someone???? Hmmmmm?
sothball - April 14, 2009
does it matter?
TheAngelsAngels - April 14, 2009
...and then you get a rec for that????? This system is rigged!!!!!
sothball - April 14, 2009
*rec'd ^^^
any more cheese to go with that whine?
ladybug - April 14, 2009
Here's a Rec, but only 1, regardless of how many amazing insights are in it

I'll give you both a rec. Just because.

Oh yeah? Well, I see your rec and raise YOU one!
ladybug - April 14, 2009
Oh sure...
THERE’s a courageous stand…I’ll rec ladybooger for CHEATING…and I’ll rec anyone that calls her on it.
Then..to top it ALL off…she rec’s your comment!!!
It’s the devil I tell ya…the DEVIL!
sothball - April 14, 2009
ladybooger?? thought name calling was against the rules, softballs
ladybug - April 14, 2009
Softballs? Ouch!!!!
They would’t be so soft if people would quit trying to kick me there. Damn!
Besides, I didn’t believe I was calling you any names…merely describing an apparent…uh…medical condition (God bless you).
And don’t think for a moment this will distract from the investigation into rec’s for dollars…or other “favors”. The rec police are onto you…
sothball - April 15, 2009
darn, distraction didn't work, huh?
ladybug - April 15, 2009
I heard someone is waving some green around in here?
AlanFalcon - April 15, 2009
BOTG = HK, for his continuation of striking out on down and away pitches in key situations.
Same crappy swings at crappy pitches as the DS
Big Bad, 'Vlad'! - April 14, 2009
This game just got worse and worse.
I’m worried about this season.
chairmanofthebar - April 14, 2009

SCOTNAK
Any sympathy on me for forgetting to submit my guesses via the new format? I actually selected my 3 choices in the drop down boxes, but forgot to hit the gosh darned submit button. I did post in the comments though.
If not, shame on me for being a dumbass.
Big Game Hunter - April 14, 2009
Sorry...
just got to be careful next time…
scottnak - April 15, 2009
This is going to be a long season...
even when we get back our pitchers because they cannot hit. Maybe and hopefully soon we change things up. But great game by Loux.
angelskid2210 - April 14, 2009
I will say it again: this team does NOT look like they have finished with ST.
I suspect that those players who WERE successful is using ST to get their prep work in were on the wrong roster.
Stirrups - April 14, 2009
2 F'n runs
7 men left on base in the last three innings. blame goes to anyone with a bat in their hand
UCIHalo - April 14, 2009
the annoying part is that the mariners actually think that they are legit
they scored 2 freakin runs off a pitcher who wasn’t even in baseball two years ago
UCIHalo - April 14, 2009
True
But the even more “legit” Angels scored 2 freakin runs off of The Burger Chef.
Rachmaninoff - April 14, 2009
got me there. That was an extremely poor performance by the Angels offense
I learned my lesson. Just because the Mariners lost 100 games with the same staff they have this year I shouldn’t assume they will do the same this year.
UCIHalo - April 14, 2009
I see the point you were getting at, too...
But keep in mind that Bedard was unhealthy for much of last year. Also, the M’s don’t have to consider putting Miguel Batista back in the rotation this year, which should help, too. Most importantly, though, the flyball pitchers (Washburn, Silva, RRS) are going to get a lot more outs from an OF which traded in Raul Ibaniez’s glove for Endy Chavez’s…not to mention the effect of getting a solid CF. All the same, no argument that many Ms fans are predicting stuff that’s way over the top due to the 6-2 start…but the rotation is indubitably better off. And did I mention getting rid of Sexson and Vidro? ;)
Rachmaninoff - April 14, 2009
so what you are saying is:
The Mariners staff was so bad last year that they have no where to go but up, and so many players and front officer personnel were canned that the 09 roster is so different we don"t know what to expect.
UCIHalo - April 14, 2009
Not quite
The rotation was a combination of Suck, injury, and Felix with no run support. With an emphasis on the Suck. No shocker to anybody that a healthy Bedard is a heck of a lot better. Silva is still a wildcard at best. Washburn is replacement level, provided that he gets good defense. So, a combination of quantifiable improvement in defense, a healthy #2, and a healthy dose of “nowhere to go but up.”
Rachmaninoff - April 14, 2009
As to if they're "legit"
Ask again in 20 or 30 games. For now, projecting off of 1 week of play is just stupid, whether you’re looking at the 1st-place Blue Jays, Padres, or ~.500 Angels, Yankees, or Red Sox. Except the Nationals. Nobody should possibly be as bad as them.
Rachmaninoff - April 14, 2009
No excuse for Shields throwing the ball to first like that.
At least I am hopeful that Loux did pretty well today. The hitting will probably come along.
44FAN - April 14, 2009
no excuse hell, even Hud mentioned Shields wasn't a fielding pitcher
ladybug - April 14, 2009
Not the First Time
Shields has thrown one away to lose. IIRC, he did it at least one other time, in Oakland I believe.
jjackflash - April 15, 2009
that was frankie
norcaliangelsfan - April 15, 2009
Frankie AND Shields have absolutely no ability to throw to first base...NONE
ladybug - April 15, 2009
no
frankie dropped the throw back from the catcher. Shields fielded a bunt attempt and threw it into right field, allowing the winning run to score. In April of 2005.
jjackflash - April 15, 2009
Not the first time
Then Angels have thrown one away to lose in Seattle. Of course, the time I’m thinking of it mattered a heckuva lot more.
AlanFalcon - April 15, 2009
This was shades of '95.
Okay, no, it wasn’t even a tenth as bad as that, but how do you miss the throw to first base on that play?
AlanFalcon - April 15, 2009
Voted Shields
but tie with Howie.
Sorry to Figgy who is getting on consistently and being left there. Nice job Fig man.
vladtheimpaler - April 14, 2009
Voted Howie
but tie with Shields.
AlanFalcon - April 15, 2009
Man, what's that smell?...
Looks like Shieldsy left something on the mound.
3rd Echelon - April 14, 2009
Does it smell worse then
what Kendry, Howie and Naps left in the batters box?
UCIHalo - April 14, 2009
Well I don't ever want to consider myself an expert. but...
yeah the three amigos were overpowering in terms of stench.
3rd Echelon - April 14, 2009
I'm almost glad I missed the game.
It is good to hear Loux had a pretty good game. Well get em’ tomorrow.
halofolife - April 14, 2009
Did I do something wrong?
I thought I might play the points game this year, when I have the opportunity to weigh in, but I don’t see me and my two theoretical points here…
Zoe Necrosis - April 14, 2009
You can't blame Shields on this one
even though I’d like to.
I voted for Morales, but I could’ve easily voted for HK.
LOB is a killer. Same complaint I had last year…
thrill000 - April 14, 2009
Today you needed an "all of the above option", plus Vlad.
Halo84653 - April 15, 2009
How many were LOB
I had to go to work early today, couldn’t watch the game. I’ve seen the highlights ( for lack of a better word ) was it that bad?
halofolife - April 14, 2009
11
There were a couple of innings we left them loaded.
