Final Score in Anaheim: Angels 5, Red Sox 4
Despite having two players a manager and a coach ejected, and with the umpires seemingly in collusion with the Boston Red Sox, the Angels took care of business in front of an not-quite sold-out Sunday afternoon home crowd and defeated the mini-Evil empire, 5 - 4.
Bobby Abreu was almost headhunted by Josh Beckett, a boy who needs an umpiring crew and a team of gonads behind him to feel like a man. Playing like the spoiled cheat we know he is, Beckett whined and pouted his way thru 6 innings of being slapped around after failing to intimidate the Angels. Abreu ended up slapping Beckett's pitches just fine, thank you, drove in some runs, Vladimir Guerrero added a solo shot that proved to be needed insurance and Brian Fuentes tight-roped it for starter Dustin Moseley.

DUSTIN
lets not take 2 run games for granted, especially given the emotional state of this team

Kruky is saying Beckett should have been ejected!

Beckett
what a gaping, weeping vagina that guy is.
HaloDutch - April 12, 2009
Yeah, Kruk was fairly pissed
about the inequity of batters charging the mound ONE STEP and getting ejected, vs. pitchers throwing at batters and staying in the game. But how does a pitcher go head-hunting WHEN TIME IS CALLED and stay in the game? Play for the Red Sox. How will he avoid any suspension? Why, he’s GodsGiftToPitching. Say, oh…John Lackey tried that bullsh!t (which he would not, because he doesn’t put everyone to sleep just because there are men on base), but for arguments sake, if he did it, he’d be gone. The home plate ump took his eye off Beckett when he called time, but the other three didn’t see him throw at Abreu’s head?! Gammons of course was strangely silent on Beckett and preferred to blame the umps. Loved the WTF from Abreu, Moseley not quite as good as Weave’, but nails-y nonetheless, Frankie-esque save from Fuentes, all in all, a really good win. Oh yeah, busted his balls like everyone else last playoffs, so, way to go Howie, at the plate and with the glove on that tipped ball from Kendry…
LUVtheLAA - April 12, 2009
because Kruk has played the game, Gammons is Sox homer
Kruk was right

Good recap of today's "moment."

RESULTS ARE UP
*HALO_86 This is the 3rd time you’ve not done it IN A ROW. You’ll start losing points if you keep doing it this week.
scottnak - April 12, 2009
scottnak don't take no mess.
44FAN - April 12, 2009
Ha! 3 times in a row and get's off with a warning?...
…is Scottnak actually Peter Gammons?
sothball - April 12, 2009
haha
well, had he scored anything today he would’ve been 0’d out for the day…
scottnak - April 12, 2009
Moseley of those 3, but where in the name of fair play is HK47?
Also, just got to see the end of the game. Our much ballyhooed bullpen has given up a run in every game but the first, and it’s getting on my nerves a little.
TheOptimist - April 12, 2009
Mose, HK are great options
But my POTG is Vladdy. That final HR was HUGE. Without that hit, I don’t know if we win.
halofolife - April 12, 2009
Dustin
I’m not in favor of seemingly ‘rubber stamped’ Panthers for starting pitchers [over offensive players], where a Halo SP is getting the nod [almost all the time unless some hitter in the lineup has a nine or 10 RBI game] if he just goes out and does his job.
However Moseley was/is still a question mark and I guess he came through on Sunday.
BBFan1 - April 12, 2009
I love how Arredondo flies stealthily under the radar...
44FAN - April 12, 2009
The panther of the game goes to
the awkwardness of the bullpen spilling out on the field and having to jog out to the home plate scrum. Twice. That was hilarious.
Also, to Guerrero, a home run that added the insurance that was necessary, after hitting a bunch of little piddlers. Howie was clutch as well.
Oh, thanks to Dustin Pedroia for both the GIDP.
RubixsQube - April 12, 2009
PotG to all the players
A hard fought win today. And to take 2 out of 3 is very impressive, given the circumstances.
I hope Scioscia is assertive in his post-game comments about the umpiring fiasco. Also it would be nice if Beckett was called out for being a classless, spoiled brat.

I was sitting behind home plate, catching a softball game.
What the hell happened?
red floyd - April 12, 2009
Seriously...
I was playing in my softball league… I saw bits and pieces… WTF happened?
red floyd - April 12, 2009
okay
Abreu calls time (maybe a little late) and the ump grants it to him. Beckett, who had already started his delivery, proceeded to throw the wasted pitch at Chupa’s head. Chupa took exception and let Blister Beckett know, so BB started walking toward Chupa, which cause the benches and bullpens to empty. Order was restored and everyone returned to their dugouts except for Soth, who was talking to the ump. Then, Beckett decides to get in a shouting match with Soth, again clearing the benches and the not quite yet returned bullpens to the field. This one was more emotional, and Torii was getting into it with an ump, and Speier and Hatcher were just going crazy. In the end, everybody returns to the dugouts, Speier, Torii , and Hatcher to the showers. Beckett miraculously is still on the mound and the game continues. Then in between innings, Soth is ejected for not being a Red Sux..

for “Panther”…..
The ump that tossed Speier deserves special recognition for ensuring Justin was not available for late inning relief today……

I agree totally...
I was really surprised they didn’t try to trot him out there in the 8th when shields was struggling.

whos coming with??
angelskid2210 - April 12, 2009
Can't argue with what he did today!
I hope Aybar heats it up so that the Angels will give him more starts and reduce the chance that Izzy will be injured come playoff time this year.
AlanFalcon - April 13, 2009
I guess there's not a "panther of the week"...
…but if there was, I might have to give it to Figgins. He gets a lot of shit in this forum, but he’s quietly racked up NINE walks and a .500 on-base average in the first six games, enough to lead the American League in walks. If not for the blown call in today’s game at second base, he’d have six steals and eight runs as well.
Hopefully this is what Legs can do in a contract year.
Turks Teeth - April 12, 2009
Figgy has been hitting the leather off the ball this week, I have noticed that too.
Not getting a hit every time but connecting the bat to the ball regularly.
44FAN - April 12, 2009
Suspend the douchebag
I’m hoping that when the league reviews the ball thrown at Abreu Beckett will be suspended for a start. The umpires might not have seen how blatant it was in real time. I didn’t realize how close the throw was until I saw it on replay.
RallyMonkey5 - April 12, 2009
Watched the BoSox TV Broadcast of the incident...
And they suggested that Beckett was trying to get time called, waiting for it, and then having a target on Abreu’s head when it finally was. And watching Beckett pitch that inning, and the way he threw that one ball when time was called, I certainly have to wonder.
AlanFalcon - April 13, 2009
Getting really angry...
I was just getting over being angry with other teams … then I read the capsule on the rumble on angelsbaseball.com. Wow, I am so pissed off at Josh Beckett for saying essentially “Oh, they are just emotional over what happened Thursday.”
What a crass, classless asshole. I cannot believe he pulled that card.
Torii called him out on it. “I can’t believe he brought up Nick. That ball was too close to his head; we’d have been out there (on the field to back up Abreu) anyway.”

UNBELIEVABLE
Thanks for the summary, DR, saving me from getting further infuriated by reading it myself. Been avoiding a lot of the N.A.34 coverage for the same reason, now this…at the very least, everyone should now know with great clarity, by his words and actions, what this guy is about; pretty much exactly how you call it. It would be NAUSEATING to hear of anyone coming to this guy’s defense.
LUVtheLAA - April 12, 2009
angels were the aggressors?
wtf? pretty sure even if beckett “didn’t mean” to throw at Chupa’s head, he was the aggressor by approaching Chupa at the plate..
stupid umps..
b0rd3rline - April 12, 2009
look at the replay
abreu is talking with the ump and both are trying to figure out what happened then beckett comes charging at abreu from the mound acting like hes tough THEN the benches clear. beckett was the fucking aggressor. therefore, he should have been ejected. instead he and his classic douchebag flavor saver/soul patch combo gets a slap on the wrist. i mean Mickey Hatcher was ejected before beckett? Torii Hunter? speier? three classic good guys before becketts wack ass? something is dead wrong here. like conspiracy theory wrong. beckett also created a confrontation with scioscia. again nothing. this is such bullshit. gross ass jim west with his ridiculously disgusting, free swinging waddle is a classic american, dumpy umpire that isnt worth the potato chips he stocks up on. we need to import them from japan. im sick and tired of the regression of officiating in america.
TheAngelsAngels - April 12, 2009
I was at the game today ...
first, it did not look like a sell-out. second, way too many Beantown fans. The only consolations are (a) we beat them, and (b) they presumably paid to get it, so we got their money. And what the hell was Big Papi doing trying to steal 2nd base? I presume that was a blown hit and run. If not, he’s got a screw loose.

i'm going to refrain from unleashing my real thoughts on Beckett
mostly because i’d rather not use that much profanity.
but he is the worst excuse for a human life i’ve ever hear of. what piece of crap. to bring up Nick like that as an excuse for his stupidity is downright disgusting. absolutely disgusting.

44FAN - April 13, 2009
I couldn't be happier about the benches clearing
I’ve thought for a long time now that we needed to physically get into it with the chowds. beckett is a coward for bringing up nick. grow a pair and take responsibility for your actions. it’s obvious he’s listened to all the hype he gets and now thinks he’s god’s gift to baseball. at least now we have some bulletin board material for next time we face these bastards. reading the comments from torii and soth after the game TRUST this is not over. no mess will be taken.
NW angels Fan - April 13, 2009
Becky needs to be suspended.
He thinks he’s above all rules and common courtesy.
Case in point.
AlanFalcon - April 13, 2009
Oh my!!!
I didn’t think the umps were that bad until reading the way they think events transpired.
The ball was extremely close to Abreu.
The Angels were most certainly not the aggressors. Abreu was saying that he didn’t appreciate it which is fine and then Beckett comes towards him which started the benches emptying.
And oh yea the ball hit the wall yesterday. POS umpires, I hope someone takes a look at this crew and disciplines them and fines Beckett.
