I'll be sitting here in front of my computer all day updating this thread with any relevant news from the winter meetings. We had over a foot of snow over-night here in western Wisconsin, so I ain't goin' anywhere. Please feel free to continue to create Fanshots of any specific deals or rumors, but this thread will be a "clearinghouse" for Twitter feeds, MLB Trade Rumor posts, ESPN Rumor Central notes, and various other winter meeting stuff.
(All times are pacific)
8:45pm
ESPN's Jason Stark has this posted as part of a Roy Halladay trade article:
The Toronto Sun reported Wednesday that the Angels offered Saunders, Aybar and outfield prospect Peter Bourjos for Halladay during these meetings. All three were believed to be on the Blue Jays' wish list last July, by the way. So the makings for a deal are there. But the Angels also have said that if Halladay won't sign an extension, they're probably not making this trade. So even if all the other pieces fit together, the extension piece might not.
8:38pm
AOL's Ed Price tweeted, "#BlueJays prefer minor-league prospects for Roy Halladay, rather than big-league players". Not really sure where he gets that information, but if that's the case, the Angels might not be able to pull off a deal for Halladay.
7:52pm
"Ton of teams on Kelvim Escobar. Shoulder in good shape, may pitch game or two in winter ball", says Ken Rosenthal (via Twitter)
7:16pm
MLB.com's Jordon Bastian tweets, "Since Halladay is eligible for FA next winter, a Major League source said he might waive his no-trade to OK a deal to the Angels for 2010." Sounds like Halladay is looking forward to free agency (or it's a ploy to negotiate for a larger extension from the Angels).
6:54pm
"Rangers, as has been reported, are indeed looking at Lowell as right-handed DH, backup 1B.....But Boston would have to eat a ton of dough.", tweets Gordon Edes.
5:08pm
According to the Toronto Sun, the Angels have made an offer for Roy Halladay:
The Angels took the lead amongst interested teams in the hunt for Halladay by offering:
- Lefty Joe Saunders, 28, who was 16-7 with a 4.60 earned run average in 31 starts. Saunders, available for trade since the Angels acquired lefty Scott Kazmir, walked 64 and struck out 101 in 186 innings. Saunders earned $475,000 this season and is eligible for salary arbitration.
- Shortstop Erick Aybar, 26 next month. He hit .312 with five homers and 58 RBIs in 137 games with the Angels. He stole 14 bases with a .353 on-base percentage. Aybar earned $473,000 and is eligible for salary arbitration.
- Speedy centre fielder Peter Bourjos, 23 in March, had six homers and 51 RBIs in 110 games at Double-A Arkansas. Bourjos, the son of former Jays scout Chris Bourjos, who helped sign Halladay, hit 16 doubles, 14 triples and was 32-for-44 stealing bases.
Both Saunders and Aybar would be under the Jays’ control for three years before they hit free agency.

4:16pm
In a new article from Lyle Spencer of MLB.com about the Angels and Jason Bay, "I have not reached out personally to him, but he has been in internal discussions that we've had as an organization," Scioscia said. "I think there are some more pressing needs that we have right now than the talent that Jason can bring. He's an extraordinary talent, but we definitely have to look for some balance in some areas. That might not make Jason a great fit for our club."
Bay -- who delivered 36 homers and 119 RBIs for the Red Sox this season and is a .341 career postseason hitter with a .634 slugging percentage in 11 games -- would command a major financial commitment that the Angels seem more inclined to make in the pitching department.
"He is an option," Angels general manager Tony Reagins said of Bay, who reportedly turned down a four-year, $60 million Boston offer. "I think Mike was right on"
4:10pm
Ken Davidoff of Newsday says via twitter, "Yankees met with John Lackey's agent, but doesn't appear they'll be a bona fide suitor."
3:52pm
Astros aquire Matt Lindstrom, "The Astros have reached a deal to acquire Matt Lindstrom from the Marlins. He is flying to Houston for a physical, sources told ESPN's Peter Gammons. The deal, pending physicals, will send Lindstrom to the Houston in exchange for two minor leaguers and the Astros' first pick in Thursday's Rule 5 draft, sources told ESPN.com's Jayson Stark. (LINK)
3:26pm
Mike Scioscia to be on MLB Network's Hot Stove show in a few minutes.
2:10pm
ESPN's Buster Olney is saying: Sources say that Rich Harden is on the verge of an agreement. It was not immediately known which team signed him, but he has been heavily involved in negotiations with the Mariners.
UPDATE: Rich Harden to Texas. One year, $7.5 million with an $11.5 million option. (Craig Calcaterra via Twitter)
UPDATE II: Matthew from Lookout Landing has an interesting article comparing Rich Harden and John Lackey (LINK)
And my internet is kinda working...for now.
12:06pm
Looks like Texas has found a trading partner in Baltimore, "The Orioles have a tentative agreement in place on a trade that would send reliever Chris Ray to the Texas Rangers for veteran starter Kevin Millwood and some cash, according to multiple team sources." (Baltimore Sun)
Also, LaTroy Hawkins signs 2-year deal with Brewers for $7.5 mil pending physical (his agent's twitter)
I have a crappy internet connection, probably because of all the snow. Frustrating!
11:16am
Ken Rosenthal: "Angels, O's no longer pursuing R. Soriano. Astros and others still in."
11:04am
"Rich Harden willing to sign a one-year deal with a lot of incentives", tweets FoxSports' Jon Morosi. UPDATE: The Angels are not involved, the source indicated.
10:57am
Twitter went dead for a while and then this from Big League Stew, "If you're wondering why there's been no news lately, it might be because all the writers just had their annual lunch with all the managers." Oh, and it finally stopped snowing in Wisconsin (15"+).
10:04am
Here's a scenario...Brandon Wood gets traded to Toronto in a deal for Halladay, ESPN's Jason Stark tweets "Red Sox have 2 or 3 teams they could trade Mike Lowell to right now if they take 'similar' contract back." Would Boston take a CF whose name rhymes with "smamatthews"? Thoughts?
09:42am
Say what?? Is this legitimate? "The markets for free agents Marlon Byrd and Mike Cameron continue running parallel to one another. One major league source pointed out Wednesday morning that many of the same teams are interested in both players: The Braves, Angels, Cubs, Yankees, Mariners, Mets and Giants have checked on each of them." (FoxSports)
09:34am
Gary Sheffield says "Hey!" (Boston.com)
09:26am
Yahoo!'s Tim Brown (via Twitter): Early interest for Pineiro: Yanks, Mets, Nats, Cubs, O's, Angels (depending on which way Lackey goes)...
06:38am
Ken Rosenthal via Twitter, "Add Angels to list of teams on R. Soriano. Astros, Orioles also involved. Soriano's permission required - could effectively pick team."
06:21am
The New York Mets think they can land John Lackey (New York Daily News).
06:04am
Baseballprojection.com has a good list of free agents, updated with each signing. Here's the link.
05:23am
Red Sox interested in Darren Oliver (ESPN).
04:53am
Toronto GM Alex Anthopoulos is "engaging in three- and four-team discussions, apparently trying to collect as many assets as he can for Halladay." (FoxSports.com). The LA Times speculate shortstop Erick Aybar may be included in a deal for Halladay. (LA TIMES)
04:47am
Cubs are working on a deal to send Milton Bradley to an A.L. "mystery team" (MLBTR). Could the Angels be that mystery team? Is Matthews Jr moving to Chicago?
04:35am
Here's a short video of what the winter meeting look like: MLB.com
Is Texas willing to deal their two top prospects for pitching? ESPN RC has this story:
ESPNDallas.com's Richard Durrett reported Tuesday night that the Texas Rangers have offered top prospects Justin Smoak and Neftali Feliz to Florida for right-hander Josh Johnson.

The Rangers have denied that deal, fwiw.
Kinslerhomer - December 9, 2009
If its legit and I'm the Marlins
I would take the offer before the Rangers sobered up.
George Kaplan - December 9, 2009
But seem to be owning up to a free agent deal with Rich Harden.
That’s the route I was hoping the Angels would take. One year of Harden at 7-8M is a more than acceptable bet.
If the Angels can’t re-sign Lackey, they’re going to be surrounded with a lot of good pitching in the division, if their rivals can stay healthy.
Turks Teeth - December 9, 2009
If there is a God...
…this “mystery team” is not the Angels. Bradley’s a good player, but come on…the guy’s a trainwreck, and not the “low self-esteem girl out at the bars because she just lost her job and needs to get drunk and have a little fun with the first guy that shows up and doesn’t give a crap if you never call her again afterward” kind of trainwreck.
It's A Trap! - December 9, 2009
I like this...
“The Angels are the front-runners to acquire Halladay, according to Troy Renck of the Denver Post. Renck ranks the Yankees, Red Sox, and Dodgers respectively as the other contenders.”

Acording to MLB Trade Rumors
Andy Pettitte just re-upped with the Yanks.
Lackey’s price tag has got to come down now, right?
Jay Cal - December 9, 2009
If the Yankees sign Pettitte for the rumored $12M (or so)...
how much is Lackey worth?
WiHaloFan - December 9, 2009
Without insane Yankee dough
There is no way anyone offers him AJ Burnett money. Perhaps now he’ll except something like 4/65. That breaks down to like $16.25 MM.
Jay Cal - December 9, 2009
If that happens, he'll really regret turning down that 4/72 offer from the Halos.
red floyd - December 9, 2009
I forgot about that.
I’m sure he’ll land at least the 4/72.
Jay Cal - December 9, 2009
Maybe
Lackey’s a lot younger, and Pettite wasn’t going anywhere else but the Yankees. Hopefully it means the Yankees now aren’t going after Lackey.
Clutch - December 9, 2009
I would love to believe this but
the Yankees signing Petite is not an addition to their rotation. They still need depth imo. I hope your right but I fear that they will still pursue him if they can’t land Haladay. They certainly have the money for it.
RedAces - December 9, 2009

Moondoggy - December 9, 2009
i just heard that too

RedAces - December 9, 2009
Yeah I saw the same report
Lackey’s price has to drop now. The Yankees are the only team that has the money and consistently signs people to absurd deals like that. He’ll be comin’ back to Earth real soon.
Commander_Nate - December 9, 2009
Two things.
red floyd - December 9, 2009
Soriano...? I can't remember why we'd be interested in him.
He’s 33, he batted .248, led all major league left fielders in errors, with 11, and the lowest fielding percentage among them.
Do 20 homeruns compensate for that? (Not sure, maybe they compensate for the BA.)

I still wouldn't give up Aybar for Halladay. Or Saunders or Weaver.
Santana and Kendrick would be ok.
Fred Fredrix - December 9, 2009
You have that add backwards...
I’d happily give up Saunders and Aubar for Halladay but wouldn’t part with Kendrick or Santana.
jimmuscomp - December 9, 2009 via mobile
Ass Backwards and Aybar.
Damn iPhone typing!
jimmuscomp - December 9, 2009 via mobile
I wouldnt mind Wood and Izzy at 3B and SS
but I would miss Aybar’s glove :(
SenorChuckles - December 9, 2009
i too would miss the glove
however, for some reason i really don’t like maicer as our everyday SS
expoforever - December 9, 2009
I would do it in a heartbeat
Here is where we really can afford to lose those pieces and certainly improve.
Izzy can replace Aybar and vice versa. And giving up Saunders or Weaver for a Cy Young winner is ok in my book any day…
If we can get this done and add another bat then we can start talking WS once again.
RedAces - December 9, 2009
3 yrs of Aybar and Weaver/Saunders for 1 yr of Halladay?
nah. Only if he signs an extension and I don’t think that’ll happen.
Fred Fredrix - December 9, 2009
Everything I hear contradicts that.
But I could be wrong.
Jay Cal - December 9, 2009
i think that is what the Angels have stated
they will only deal for Halladay if he agrees to a long term deal. i also wouldn’t be ok with the trade for just a year.
RedAces - December 9, 2009
Ditto
I’m sure the Angels are smart enough that if they were willing to part with Saunders/Aybar/Bourjos it would be only if they got Roy to sign a long term deal.
Otherwise they would have to be completely INSANE to give up that kind of talent for a potential one-year rental.

FoxSports Radio just said
Angels may include Aybar in a trade for Halladay.
Do you move Brandon to SS? Or let Izzy try it out?
Jay Cal - December 9, 2009
Izzy SS and Wood 3B
Izzy leads off, Wood hits 7th or 8th and and we all pray for a Morales 2.0
PhiSlamma - December 9, 2009
It would make sense no?
Aybar’s stock is high, Izzy has shown he can bat leadoff. But who would be our 2B/SS/3B backups Sandoval and Brown? rghan help me out! We have kids that can come in and play good D if HK, Izzy, or Wood get hurt right? I wouldn’t be asking for these kids to hit .300 or anything, they just need to bring their glove.
SenorChuckles - December 9, 2009
it's a good deal.
Izzy can and has played ss well for us. And agreed we gotta pray for Morales 2.0. We already saw flashes of it when he has been given some at bats. I would love to see what a full season can bring.
RedAces - December 9, 2009
^^^ Morales 2.0

red floyd - December 9, 2009
Cameron
I’ve thought about him before filling in one of our corner spots. His bat isn’t great, but he hits enough that his amazing glove is worth it. He’s already indicated that he’d move to a corner for a contending team. An outfield of Cameron, Hunter, and Rivera (Abreu would DH, obviously) would not let many balls fall in.
My only issues are his age (Steve Finley 2.0??) and the fact that it would make the line up awfully right-handed. All in all I think he’d be worth looking at for a cheap 1 or 2 year deal.
Marlon Byrd? Um, do we remember the last time a journeyman Texas centerfielder had a career year? NO THANKS.
dmhead - December 9, 2009
Good point on Cameron
I hadn’t really thought of it that way. Cheap is the key.
WiHaloFan - December 9, 2009
Cameron is GMJ all over again
no thanks.
PhiSlamma - December 9, 2009
How so?
Not saying we should go all-in for him, but he’s been an elite defender his whole career, has consistently hit for power, and has improved his plate discipline in his later years. Other than connections to some stimulants, how are they at all alike?

They basically need two starter arms, which they will pick up on the back end of the offseason, and they will stay put.

WiHaloFan - December 9, 2009
I would be absolutely fine with signing Bay
with a bullpen arm and be done.
-Lackey is too old and too injured recently for a 5+ year contract.
-Halladay will cost Aybar and lots of money. No thanks. I would rather have Aybar for the next 4 years and try and sign Halladay in the FA market next year.
-We have depth in the rotation. All the Angels need is for two guys to man up in the playoffs and pitch like Jeff Weaver for the Cards in 05.
PhiSlamma - December 9, 2009
Does anyone know that if we indeed trade Saundo, Aybar, and Napoli
would their money be off the books? Therefore giving us more money for Halladay’s extension and BP help (or Bay)?
SenorChuckles - December 9, 2009
Saundo Aybar and Naps
Are all eligible for arbitration and raises.
Their salary would move to the Jays and would be around 5-7 million dollars.
PhiSlamma - December 9, 2009
Really? 5-7 mill all together?
their raises have already been added to the payroll no?
SenorChuckles - December 9, 2009
That would be a super-shitty trade, btw
Solid SP, one of the most powerful-hitting catchers in the game, and potential Ozzie Smith 2.0 with a better bat, all for an admittedly great pitcher in his 30s, who, like all pitchers, is one sneeze away from ending his career? And who will cost five times as much as those three? Count me out.
mattwelch - December 9, 2009
I think if Aybar is on the table
Then the trade becomes more prospects than Major League Level players. I don’t think you need to send both Naps and Aybar, with Saundo.
If its Aybar, probably a deal with Conger, Bell, and maybe a AA pitching prospect could do it.
Jay Cal - December 9, 2009
We need to get real here.
Bell is a throw-in if anything, not a bona-fide piece in any trade for a guy like Halladay. If it is indeed Aybar, I agree that the rest of the players would be minor leaguers, but more along the lines of Reckling/Walden. So if the trade is Aybar, Reckling, Conger and THEN a low-end guy like Bell, does that get it done? Is it worth it?
dmhead - December 9, 2009
Maybe I was over-valuing Bell
But if it lands you Halladay, how can you not do it? Keeping my fingers crossed but if Seattle doesn’t sign another Type A free agent, we’ll get their 18th pick and a sandwich pick. If Lackey chooses to go to the Mets (which is rumored), I believe we pick up their 2nd round and a draft pick. And if we don’t sign Bay, we keep our 31st pick. Restock the farm with pitching.
Jay Cal - December 9, 2009
Ditto that!
Finally! A voice of Reasonm
STOP with the “trade Aybar” stuff. It’s making me ill, here. Put DOWN the Jack Daniels.
There’s a good reason the RSox have been looking for a decent SS like, forever – there aren’t many.
We’ve got one that’s killing it out there and hasen’t even approached his potential. And he’s cheap to boot!
Do NOT trade Aybar!
LAASurfin - December 9, 2009 via mobile
Mobile posting is humble-pie
Please ignore the fat-fingering…
LAASurfin - December 9, 2009 via mobile
AGREED!
Seriously, a solid SS is hard to find. Say aybar settles into a .315, .320 hitter with some power (10-15 HR a year) and good speed (20 sb a year). Do we really want to let that go for a guy who plays every fifth day and ties up nearly 20% of our payroll? Not to mention a guy like Napoli who homers like crazy and a SP who, while certainly not the equal of halladay is a solid competitor.
Maybe I just have too much attachment to the guys, but it seems like we might be getting the short end of this deal.
Balls and Strikes - December 9, 2009
I would assume so, but why not wait?
We could get him at the trade deadline for probably one player and a prospect instead of 3 major league guys. We will easily still contend for the West without Lackey or Halladay if we have our other 4 starters.
I’d be willing to rent Halladay for a lower price and he’d be a moron not to accept an offer that could take him to the playoffs for his first time right before he enters free agency.
Commander_Nate - December 9, 2009
There would be more teams intrested.
im guessing he would accept a trade to a team in contention for 1/2 a year.
SenorChuckles - December 9, 2009
only prob with this is the Jays are looking to trade him and trade him now.
RedAces - December 9, 2009

Halladay has given the Jays a deadline to be traded by the beginning of the season or else he stays on until he becomes a FA next year.

Also sounds like the Halos are learning from the U-Haul “debacle”—I wonder if they were demanding this window in the summer and that’s what killed it? Reagins has said that Aybar wasn’t the sticking point…or I guess maybe Saunders was.
Clutch - December 9, 2009
Why not offer Izturis instead of Aybar?
Comparable skill set, great with RISP, plays 3 IF positions. He’s a FA next year, but his next contract would be easily manageable to the Jays.
Then we can sign another utility guy or bring up Sandoval if we need to.
Commander_Nate - December 9, 2009
We could offer Izturis
By if i’m Toronto, why don’t I counter offer with Ricky Romero. They kind of hold the cards… if the deal comes down to Aybar and the Angels have fallen in love with Hallady, then say bye to Aybar.
It all depends. I always thought the entire deal was based on more prospects. But whatever.
Jay Cal - December 9, 2009
Aren't you also making a case why we should just play Izzy??

Izturis on the other hand is equal or very near equal to Aybar.

BruinHalo - December 9, 2009

All smoke and mirrors. The Angels in a worse case scenario could use Napoli as a DH. More realistically, Plan A involves trading for Halladay (with a long term commitment) re-signing Lackey, then signing Bay. Of course that’s probably not going to happen, but what they are probably working towards.
Jay Cal - December 9, 2009

Arte could afford it
Think big splash, this year the All-Star Game is in Anaheim. Arte is going to show the country that the Angels are a big market team.
Jay Cal - December 9, 2009
While Arte could afford it
if the Yankees or Sox had the slightest hint that we could pull it off, they would likely do whatever it took to keep it from happening.

Bay combines power and speed.
The Angels could use his speed in the absence of Figgins. Plus he has reasonable power.

lightupthehalo29 - December 9, 2009
Ya, I think Bay is gonna be a Plan B.
If they can’t get Halladay and Lackey, they’ll probably go for Bay.
~MMP~ - December 9, 2009
How does Arte afford both Halladay AND Lackey?
Especially with his announcement that payroll will stay about the same as last year? Sounds like more writers blowing smoke. Or Arte/Reagins are playing mind games with Lackey or Halladay’s agents.
I assume either Santana, Weaver, or Saunders get traded to Toronto in any deal for Halladay. That gives a starting staff of Halladay, Lackey, Kazmir, and 2 of 3 above. That still leaves Moseley, Bell, O’Sullivan and Palmer as 6-9 potential starters, unless Bell or O’Sullivan are also included in the deal for Halladay.
Don’t know if this will happen, but if it does, we will be SP rich, decent pen, and a bit light on offense. Defense should be roughly the same.
And Arte’s wallet will be a bit lighter too.
sothball - December 9, 2009
I have a feeling Arte/Reagins are playing mind games.
With how sneaky and secretive the Angels usually are during the offseason, I would be shocked if what Arte said about keeping payroll about the same is true.
~MMP~ - December 9, 2009
i think arte said
the payroll will stay roughly the same but he will spend for certain players he knows will make significant difference.
my problem is how long are they gonna sign halladay and lackey up for; around 4 years would be great, anything longer and i’d feel a little uncomfortable.

Harden is sort of like Bedard
The biggest difference is that the first thing Harden says at the introductory press conference
won’t be, " I surrender!! "
Fan Since 1981 - December 9, 2009
So the Rangers have traded a solid reliable starter (Millwood)...
…for a solid reliever (Ray), and replaced the solid relaible starter with a shakey Canadian.
Harden is a gamble. If he has a decent season, then they come out ahead in these 2 deals. If not, they have a millwood size hole in their SP staff.
sothball - December 9, 2009
Rangers deals are not definite yet according to mlb.com
“The Rangers are ready to send Millwood to the Orioles for Ray and use the money saved in the transaction to sign Harden, who was 9-9 with a 4.09 ERA in 26 starts for the Cubs last year. He was 10-2 with a 2.07 ERA in 25 starts with Athletics and Cubs in 2008.
An official announcement could come as early as Wednesday evening. The biggest hurdle is a review of the medical records because Ray underwent Tommy John elbow ligament replacement surgery in August 2007, and missed all of the ’08 season.
Harden also has a long history of physical issues that would require a physical before his deal is complete."

I never thought I’d say it but losing Aybar would be awful.
SalmonStream - December 9, 2009
What's the point?
Halladay will be a free agent again in another season, unless you sign him to an extension first. But that would cost at least as much money as signing John Lackey, and Halladay is even 18 months older. Sure Halladay is better, but is so much better you’ll trade your shortstop, a linchpin in your rotation, and one of your top prospects just for the right to pay him more money than John Lackey? No thanks, dude.
Suboptimal - December 9, 2009
i am feeling very weird about this
can’t decide if i like it or not, i have no problem with peter and saunders but aybar… eh i dunno maybe we just need to eventually give up something big anyway and aybar might just be the piece to do it…
make the trade, get lackey, trade GMJ for Lowell and make B-Wood, Izzy, and Howie the shortstop/2nd rotation
things could be worse…

The Blue Jays might have worn out his arm. He’s thrown 930.1 innings over the last four seasons (avg. 232.5 innings per year). Halladay turns 33 in 2010. How much does he have left? His best seasons are behind him.

Why do the Blue Jays want Aybar?
Toronto just signed TWO free-agent shortstops last week. Why the heck would they want Aybar now? With Arron Hill at 2nd, Encarcion at 3rd, and 2 other shortstops there’s no place for them to play Aybar.

The Limey - December 9, 2009
The only way this is happening is if that's already been told to Halladay
Reagins has said from the beginning a trade would rely on him signing an extension. It doesn’t go through unless we know we can. We’ll talk to Halladay before it’s all done.
lightupthehalo29 - December 9, 2009
would they really continue to talk to the blue jays is Halladay would not approve.
SenorChuckles - December 9, 2009
If we trade Aybar, that trade could haunt us for years.
I’ve been of the opinion all along that re-signing Lackey should be our top priority, within reason. Is he worth 100 million? No. But is trading our SS whose potential has not been reached, with great D, a bat that’s starting to develop, not too mention he’s only 26, and under club control all while being relatively cheap, for a 33 year old SP that we still would have to extend, for probably more than it would take to re-sign Lackey. I’m fine with trading for Halladay. Just leave Aybar out of it.
halofolife - December 9, 2009
but dude a trade for Halladay would basically be a bitch slap...
at the M’s getting Figgy. Like we are sending a messge that We are the Angels, We get shit done. With or without aybar we will still win the west, so why not bank that we will get revenge on the Yankees in the 2010 postseason.
SenorChuckles - December 9, 2009
true
However, what do we do with our infield? Does Wood start at Short and Izzy at 3B? I don’t think that is good enough.
ryanfea - December 9, 2009
i agree
the more i think about it the more i am ok with that rotation… who knows maybe aybar had a career year or maybe izzy lights it up next year… sometimes you have to take risks… shows some balls by the Angels to make a trade like this so i say trust the FO and let’s watch it unfold
trojanangelfan - December 9, 2009
for the trading of Aybar
Aybar had one great year and does have potential but we are talking about adding a CY Younger here. And we have players to play SS. Izzy may get it done. And we don’t know that Aybar can do a good job at lead off while we already know that Izzy can. That is a bigger need IMO.

Personally, I don't care about bitch slapping the M's.
I just don’t want to mortgage the future, on a 33 year old pitcher whose best years are behind him, at least if the trade involves Aybar. I have no problem with losing Colonel Saunders, WTY or Santana, because I knew that would be the price for a player of Halladay’s caliber. Hell, at this point Aybar has proven himself more than Brandon Wood has, but almost nobody wants him to be part of the deal. Now before y’all start hating on me i’m not implying that Wood is or will be a bust, just a simple fact.
halofolife - December 9, 2009
I understand.
I just see Halladay dominate no matter what his age, kind of like a Randy Johnson. Well Halladay wont pitch forever but I think you get the point.
SenorChuckles - December 9, 2009
No, i'm with you.
Halladay would be a tremendous pick up for us, I just don’t think Aybar should be part of the trade. If we gotta deal Izzy,or one of our SP, so be it, Mathis or Naps, i’d be fine with that. Hell they can even have GMJ, but if i’m ninja, I try to hold on to Aybar. Just my opinion though.
halofolife - December 9, 2009

if indeed Aybar leaves he will leave a big in my heart and Halladay would come in and would easily fill that spot and more.

lightupthehalo29 - December 9, 2009
Your opinion is wrong
ryanfea - December 9, 2009
Why do you want Aybar?
To hit leadoff? He doesn’t walk, he steals bases like Figgy (meaning, not very well), he hits only singles and the occasional triple.
Also, everyone who wants to get rid of Napoli is also insane. Mathis is terrible at the plate. Regardless of how much “better” he is behind it than Napoli, it doesn’t begin to make up for the fact that he can’t hit. Naps gives you 20-30 HR per year. I’ll take that over leading the leage in CERA anyday.
llsryan - December 9, 2009
Well I dont know about everyone else...
but Aybar is one of my favorite hispanic player but I would trade Aybar if that meant Santana wont be part of the deal.
SenorChuckles - December 9, 2009
it's durability that is the issue with Napoli
the guy gets injured too much to be behind the plate, I’d rather he were full time DH that caught once a week and we had bobby wilson and mathis catching.
If we have Halladay and Lackey, we may not need the extra bullpen pitcher anyways.
jtkelly86 - December 9, 2009
That's right! Aybar sucks....
Oh, and who lead the Angels in batting this last year? oh yeah, that guy that sucks.

Aybar is very good and also replaceable. He’s a slick fielding shortstop that isn’t very patient and doesn’t have lot of power. It’s nice that he’s young and cheap and will likely improve but he’s hardly a tier 1 player.
Halladay is much better than Lackey. He’s a former CY young winner who consistently posts low ERA’s and high K rates. Lackey is good. Halladay is great and a bona fide.
Bourjorourous isn’t Reckling or Wood so who cares.

The value of Napoli
Of the 29 catchers in MLB who had at least 300 PAs, Napoli had the fourth best wOBA. The top 4:
1) Mauer (.438)
2) Posada (.378)
3) V.Martinez (.375)
4) Napoli (.362)
Having a catcher who can hit is a significant competitive advantage that the Angels currently hold. Don’t piss it away.

Fan Since 1981 - December 9, 2009
I wonder how much his poor defense
diminishes his value. Maybe the Jays aren’t looking for an offensive minded Catcher.
ryanfea - December 9, 2009
Catcher defense is difficult to quantify (at least from a UZR perspective)
And that whole “he calls a good game” is still up for debate. The only thing that’s known is that really good hitting catchers are fairly rare.
Fan Since 1981 - December 9, 2009
Pretty Sure Scoscia's calling the games
lightupthehalo29 - December 9, 2009
Not just the pitch calling.
But about how catchers “handle” a pitcher. About how some pitchers feel more comfortable with specific catchers. Again, very tough to quantify. It’s very much an intangible (something I know The Soth values; one of the reasons he likes Mathis so much despite the fact that Mathis is a terrible hitter).
Fan Since 1981 - December 9, 2009
I don't really know how this plays into sabermetrics
But Napoli can’t seem to close his glove when he’s catching.
Teixeira Who? - December 9, 2009
At least Izturis is a leadoff man!
Aybar’s OBP is not great, which makes this understandable. Still, I would have rather offered Napoli!
BTW, Mathis is showing he can hit too
lightupthehalo29 - December 9, 2009
Since when?
Two weeks in the postseason?
Mathis hit .211 in 250+ plate appearances last season. I’ll believe he’s a hitter when he shows up over a full season.
Turks Teeth - December 9, 2009
If this happend...
Wood at SS. Sign Beltre.
I still don’t like it.
SteelieD - December 9, 2009
I don't like it because it involves signing Beltre.
Izturis and Wood will be fine. Bring in a cheap scrub for substitution purposes, not Beltre.
Clutch - December 9, 2009
I'm OK with this only if he signs an extension.
jessthelion - December 9, 2009
MLBTR says Red Sox are looking at Beltre
They should send us Lowell for GMJ, then we could play Wood/Lowell, Izturis, and Kendrick…
lightupthehalo29 - December 9, 2009
these guys are also available to play SS
Eric Bruntlett (32)
Orlando Cabrera (35) – Type A, can’t be offered arb
Craig Counsell (39)
Bobby Crosby (30)
Chris Gomez (39)
Nick Green (31)
Khalil Greene (30)
Jerry Hairston Jr. (34)
Miguel Tejada (36) – Type A, not offered arb
Nashdiesel - December 9, 2009
Ideally we'd want a 3B who can DH
Lowell
Tejada
Beltre
Those would be top 3. Who else is there? We don’t want to break the bank either, we’ll be paying for Halladay.
lightupthehalo29 - December 9, 2009
OC as a 1 or 2 year stopgap would be interesting.

khalil is an interesting option, as is OC
trojanangelfan - December 9, 2009

SenorChuckles - December 9, 2009
Beltre Wood Kendrick and Morales would be a pretty bomb infield...
Hough - December 9, 2009
For Halladay it should Aybar OR Saundo, along with a couple of prospects, not both
I don’t like this trade at all.
Quad Fin Rider - December 9, 2009
Do it
With an extension, of course.
10 27 02 - December 9, 2009

I’M AN OLD FART
He just looks it.

We’ll have to do better than Lowell

Miguel Tejada?

I get why we need the dramatic move
With Seattle getting uppity and the Dodgers looking very vulnerable now is the time to make the big splash. If the Triumvirate thinks losing Aybar is worth it I’ll support it.
If Arte makes his move now he can dominate the West and grow his brand. Hopefully the final stage of the plan is trading GMJ and Rodger Lodge for some sort of alcoholic chicken drink.

Wytelitning - December 9, 2009
Yes! Exactly!
I love Saundo and Aybar will be good, but we spend money! We can find another starter and we can get another SS, but not everyday can you get a Roy Halladay!!
angelskid2210 - December 9, 2009

SenorChuckles - December 9, 2009
The great thing about Granderson to the Yanks

saundo AND aybar for halladay?! ….. no thanks. Saundo when healthy is an ace, and aybar is just flat out entertaining.

Saundo is not an ace.
Sorry.
clover_black - December 9, 2009
that is some serious optimism
RedAces - December 10, 2009
It's crazy talk if anyone thinks saundo is an ace.
solid #2, for sure.
clover_black - December 10, 2009
No.
I get the feeling a lot of people assume that we’ll find a way to lock up Halladay if we make this trade…. And the fact that Halladay might only be an Angel for one year seems like saundo and aybar and bourjos are a steep steep price
LiteUpThatHalo - December 9, 2009
There's no way the Angels make this trade...
…without an extension.
10 27 02 - December 9, 2009
Will
we be able to negotiate with Doc before the trade is “official”? Or does the negotiating happen when both teams sign the papers? I think its the latter of the two but I’m just making sure.
Gold Glove Hunter 48 - December 9, 2009
We could arrive at a gentlemen's agreement with Doc before the trade is official.
But can’t sign an official extension until he’s on the 40-man.
PitPerc - December 9, 2009
okay
thanks bro
Gold Glove Hunter 48 - December 9, 2009
For all the people who are crying not to trade Aybar :
Ask yourself what is the Goal? If you are like most Halos fans the answer is WIN THE WORLD SERIES. We have won divisions. Winning the West means nothing. It only has value as a means to an end — and that end is winning it all. Right now the $pankees and all their $$ are standing in our way. Aybar didn’t help get us past them. So, ask yourself these two questions:
1) Does keeping Aybar and foregoing Halladay get you closer to your primary goal of winning the World Series? (The answer is NO)
2) Does acquiring Halladay at the cost of Aybar (and probably Saundo and Borjos) get you closer to your primary goal? (The answer is YES)
It’s that simple. Assuming you can sign Halladay and get him for multiple years you have to make this trade.
Jack Frost - December 9, 2009
I agree...but
I’m reading from multiple sources that Halladay won’t sign long term on the West Coast…If that is true I wouldn’t pull the trigger.
Gold Glove Hunter 48 - December 9, 2009
Yes, I agree
We HAVE to get him for at least 3 years if we are giving up that talent.
Jack Frost - December 9, 2009
The Angels have already stated that they won't trade for Halladay without an extension.
So, they must already have an idea that they could get an extension done. Although, until they can actually talk with him I guess no one knows for sure.
10 27 02 - December 9, 2009
We aren't going to put this one through without an extension
Reagins made that clear.
No extension, no trade for Halladay.
It’s up to him if he wants a chance to go to a contender and possibly the post season now, or if he wants to waste another year in Toronto just so he can get money from an East Coast team.
Commander_Nate - December 9, 2009
I wish I had a link, but
he said it wasnt about money, he just wants a shot at the playoffs. Dont know if he was talking about and extension or a deal in 2011.
SenorChuckles - December 9, 2009
There are a lot of assumptions in what you wrote;
- That Aybar doesn’t improve on his effort from last year.
- That Halladay doesn’t get injured.
This trade is one injury to Halladay away from being one of the worst trades ever made by the Angels.
If it happens, I hope the Angels sign Halladay to a long term contract and that he remains healthy for the duration of that contract. But he has a lot of wear and tear on his arm.
Finally, this doesn’t guarantee a world series ring any more than if the trade doesn’t happen. There are far too many variables.
sothball - December 9, 2009
I never said anything about guarantees. Re-read the comment.
This trade would simply put us in a better position to achieve our goal sothball. As for injuries, Aybar could tear his ACL and be out for the whole year. So what. Nobody knows who will get injured or when. Halladay has pretty pretty reliable.
Jack Frost - December 9, 2009
If injuries are what you are worried about Id still take Halladay over Lackey.
Lackey has started the season injured 2 years in a row, Halladay has started on opening day 8 years in a row.
SenorChuckles - December 9, 2009
yeah i'll take halladay and Lackey and hope that they don't get injured any day.
RedAces - December 10, 2009
"Assuming you can sign Halladay and get him for multiple years you have to make this trade."
That’s the key.
U-hauling him for 2010 is out of the question.
clover_black - December 9, 2009
reply fail
on another note, kelvim escobar should play for the angels for a bag of potato chips.
clover_black - December 9, 2009
Hah, yes.
They’ve probably lost confidence in him at this point, though. Which is too bad in some ways, but in other ways I have the same assessment.
Clutch - December 9, 2009
I've always like Kelvim, but at this point, after all the money he's made..
Despite all of his injuries, HE should pay the Halos to pitch again.
halofolife - December 9, 2009
Yes. Exactly.
I would be worried about extending Halladay for TOO long—let’s go for maybe 3-4 years—but watching Saundo and Aybar, and even Bourjos, be awesome in Toronto for another three or four years after Halladay has become a Skankee or whatever is just going to be wrong.
Clutch - December 9, 2009

Gold Glove Hunter 48 - December 9, 2009

ihearhowie2.0 - December 9, 2009
uhmmm
the Toronto Sun reported it…we didnt just make it up
Gold Glove Hunter 48 - December 9, 2009
uhmmmmmmmmm ya, i can read
has anyone else reported this on their own source? Nope. The same article has just be alluded to or cited. There was also reports we were “deep” in discussions with Jason Bay the morning before Tony even got to the meetings, and then we found out all of that was blown out of proportion.
My point was that until other outlets treat this as anything more than a rumor, that’s all it is. One newspaper with an unnamed source is no different than the 500000 other rumors that pop up during the meetings.
Unless you think we’re also signing Matsui. And Marlon Byrd. And Beltre. And Bay. And Pineiro.
ihearhowie2.0 - December 9, 2009
Matsui would be nice.
SenorChuckles - December 9, 2009

10:32pm: ESPN.com’s Jayson Stark hears that Halladay would approve a deal to the Phillies, Yankees, Red Sox and Angels. The Rays and Dodgers are possibilities, and one person “who knows [Halladay] well” doesn’t think he’d go to the Mets. Check out Stark’s entire article for a detailed breakdown of the “Doc on the block” part two.
He’ll approve…but will he sign an extension?

Aybar/Saundo/Wood/Bourjos so one postseason later one player has to be taken away due to 1 year left and to keep him you need some serious cash.
SenorChuckles - December 9, 2009
they should have made the deal last year..
if they were gonna put aybar on the deal a year later.

you never know
Gold Glove Hunter 48 - December 9, 2009
but would have had a better rotation for sure thus giving us a better chance.
RedAces - December 10, 2009
the questions i have are
i really don’t think Halladay is the “missing link” rather the angels need many “links” to catch up to the yankees and red sox (the latter will definitely re-up after a “disappointing” 09, and the former just got curtis granderson). but i would never make this deal for the short term (even a short extension (less than 3 years).
Halos in DE - December 9, 2009
not really
i dont think we need many links to catch up to the yankees. all we really needed last year was an ace that could go up against CC
OMG!! - December 9, 2009
exactly
Lackey isnt an ace..Doc is, in my opinion, one of the top 3 pitchers in the league.
Gold Glove Hunter 48 - December 9, 2009
I think he could be
just imagine him pitching 3 times in a 7 game series…
Gold Glove Hunter 48 - December 9, 2009
imagine
how frustrating would the yankees been if they had to go up Doc for 3 games
OMG!! - December 9, 2009
but i also agree with you
that we dont make the deal unless he signs at least a 3 year extension
Gold Glove Hunter 48 - December 9, 2009
This trade will not happen
If it was going to happen it would be done by now. Jays will agree to the deal if we replace Saunders with Weaver and Peter B with B. Wood
UCIHalo - December 9, 2009
what
sources do you have?
oh yes, none.
Gold Glove Hunter 48 - December 9, 2009
That is ridiculous
The Jays are waiting to see if anyone else will step up with anything similar.
Also, it would be ridiculous to give up Weaver AND Wood WITH Aybar. If anything I hear the Jays would want more prospects in replace of Saunders, not major leaguers. Aybar+Bourjos+2 pitching prospects (Reckling+Walden)?
lightupthehalo29 - December 9, 2009
I'd rather give up
ANYONE in the minors rather than Reckling…I’ve been keeping my eye on this kid since he’s been in high school in New Jersey… He will be good…TRUST ME haha…

I would miss Aybar but I feel that we’ll end up needing a bat like Nap’s.
TheAntiSox - December 9, 2009
i'm highly dubious of Naps hitting + .300 avg
mastermind565 - December 9, 2009
i agree
napoli always gets in a slump that takes his avg way down
OMG!! - December 9, 2009

Why can't we do it

TheAntiSox - December 10, 2009
He already freaking did
For the first half of the season.
Im saying the reason why he is getting into slumps is because of lack of consistent starts.
TheAntiSox - December 10, 2009
This is the most insane shit i've ever read.
Napoli’s bat is dogshit. He’s always been a horrible batter, especially at contact, but he’s had some bloops in his career that has made everyone bob on his knob.
O V E R R A T E D
Oh man, haha, napoli putting up 40 hrs and plus 300… dude is gonna be a hall of famer soon.
clover_black - December 10, 2009
The guys a hitter
Overrated my ass. We havent seen a guy with this kind of power in a long time.
TheAntiSox - December 10, 2009
the angels or mlb in general?
’cause i can rattle off a couple of names where we have seen a dude with this kind of power in both cases.
retrohalo - December 10, 2009
Angels, of course.
I also meant to say a catcher with this kind of power.
TheAntiSox - December 10, 2009
ooooh.
that makes it clearer. yeah, napoli does have some kind of power but the guy goes on too many cold/hot streaks and it seems like his cold streaks are always longer than his hot.
retrohalo - December 10, 2009
Yes
But IMO he gets into slumps because of his inconsistent playing time, thus, if he has a full season under his belt he’ll tear it up. Just a thought.
TheAntiSox - December 10, 2009
Halladay is a 20 game winner with a team like the Jays
With a team like the Angels, he could be a 25 game winner.
TheAntiSox - December 9, 2009
+1
SenorChuckles - December 9, 2009
none of my business, but how old are you
mastermind565 - December 9, 2009
ROFL.
18…
SenorChuckles - December 9, 2009
hmmm... expected you to be younger
mastermind565 - December 9, 2009
ouch cheapshot :(
Lowell to Rangers? The Boston Harold appears to say the deal is done.
SenorChuckles - December 9, 2009
Who's Harold? And when did he move to Boston?
And is he the only one there? ;-D
For that matter, if he’s the one I’m thinking of, weren’t he and Kumar in Amsterdam last we checked?
Clutch - December 9, 2009
ahh shits about to hit the fan in the 3rd installment.
SenorChuckles - December 9, 2009
Haha
Clutch - December 10, 2009
as long as he doesnt get injured
OMG!! - December 9, 2009
There’s no way the yanks and sox are bidding on Halladay after the yanks grabbed Granderson and are still looking at Holliday. The Sox have bigger worries in resigning Bay or finding a 3B replacement (Beltre?) for Lowell.
We’re bidding against ourselves here…. Ayber should NOT be apart of this deal. Halladay is going to want CC type of money and if we give it to him prepare for all of us to be outpriced of our seats starting in 2011.
Hope this trade doesn’t go through for the sake of our 2012+ seasons…
halo nation - December 9, 2009
Well the Phillies might still be a contender for him
He supposedly wants to go there.
~MMP~ - December 10, 2009
I think about this sort of thing myself
As much as the Angel fan in me sees all these big money free agents and think “sign ’em! Give ’em anything they want!”, I understand the need for a business to balance payroll while keeping costs down for the fans as opposed to just passing it all on to them in higher ticket and concession prices. I have a friend who lives in New York and is a Yankee fan and says “I’m proud of my Yankees. I just wish I could afford to go to a damn game”. lol
Hoppity Hooper - December 10, 2009
The deal should have been
napoli,wood,saunders
What do you guys think?
OMG!! - December 9, 2009
and maybe a prospect
OMG!! - December 9, 2009
-1
I like Wood, I dont prefer Wood over Aybar, but its not my call.
SenorChuckles - December 9, 2009
hmmmm
we haven’t seen what wood can do, he’s pretty much 50/50 but aybar has proven himself a gold glove shortstop
OMG!! - December 9, 2009
dont read too much into it.
its just my opinion.
SenorChuckles - December 9, 2009
Ideally we keep both, but the team probably figures Wood's got greater power potential and still tremendous upside
Remember he’s 24-25 and has never had consistent playing time in the majors, so you can’t read anything into his relative lack of success in the majors thus far. Remember, we were having the same doubts about Aybar as recently as the beginning of this season.
Clutch - December 9, 2009
Nope
I love Nap and we need to see the kind of player Wood will be with some at-bats.
TheAntiSox - December 10, 2009
I can't decide how I feel about this trade
UCIHalo - December 9, 2009
+1
although i have pretty much decided i am 50.1% for it
trojanangelfan - December 9, 2009
soooo
who’s freakin stoked for the Angels gnome on 5/25??
ghsu - December 9, 2009
gnome
or GAME?
Rev Halofan - December 9, 2009
gnome!!! hahaha check it on the 9-game mini-plan
ghsu - December 9, 2009
i want Halladay, but the loss of Figgins I thought would mean Ayber as are lead off hitter
Ca1IFORNIA ANGELS - December 10, 2009
I guess
It means Izturis then…
TheAntiSox - December 10, 2009
How old are you?
opiejeanne - December 10, 2009
I'm only 3 and a half years old.
Bugs Bunny reference.
Slasher52 - December 10, 2009
Both polls, here and on Bluebird banter...
…are running 52:47 in favour of the trade
The Limey - December 10, 2009
Who knows if this means anything in the end, but
according to ESPN, a source close to Halladay said “I think he’d go there if it’s a trade,” the source said. “But I don’t see him signing there [long term].”
Also that “I don’t see him blindly signing with the team that makes the trade. Let’s put it that way,” the source said. “Money isn’t going to be enough to get it done. For him, the chance of winning is more important than anything.”
~MMP~ - December 10, 2009
Well, he's not coming here without an extension
We’re not giving up 2 quality guys and a good prospect for a 1 year rental. Reagin’s isn’t dumb.
Commander_Nate - December 10, 2009
Concur
He’ll be expensive too. That’s why the trade hasn’t happened yet.
TheAntiSox - December 10, 2009
Let's hope so
That Reagins is not dumb enough to make this trade for one year of halladay
OMG!! - December 10, 2009 via mobile
ummmmmmm
10:00pm: Angels GM Tony Reagins didn’t comment on the reported offer of Saunders, Aybar and Bourjos, but two sources shot the rumor down when Mike DiGiovanna of the LA Times asked them about it.
Reagins said the Blue Jays have targeted Saunders, Bourjos and Mike Napoli. It’s even “possible” that the deal could be expanded to send more Blue Jays to Anaheim.
“They have a lot of pieces that are attractive,” Reagins said.
ummmm
why did we put aybar?????
OMG!! - December 10, 2009
Hmmm, based on that
looks like they want Napoli instead of Aybar.
Not sure how I feel about that.
~MMP~ - December 10, 2009
I'd be more comfortable with Nap being offered.
We can find another DH and Catcher, although I do love Naps.
I’d especially like this deal if it included more players coming to us, like say a utility guy. Dunno what the Jays have in that regard.
Commander_Nate - December 10, 2009
Nap other than Aybar I mean.
Commander_Nate - December 10, 2009
Why do we need another utility guy?
We have Izturis for the IF and Willits for the OF. They should give us a lefty reliever. Scott Downs?
