Reports out of the Indianapolis Winter meetings indicate that the Angels biggest headway into trading for Curtis Granderson, the Tigers outfielder came when they added minor league prospect Peter Bourjos to the package. (Source is Fox Sports.)
The Angels are on the sidelines for now, though, as a three team deal for Granderson involving the Diamondbacks and Yankees (and including pitcher Max Scherzer) is gaining steam. But like Bill Stoneman learned about Casey Kotchman when he was offered many combinations of veterans for the young infielder at the 2005 Winter Meetings: Forget Baseball Prospectus, sometimes other clubs will tell you who your top prospect is.

Olney and Heyman say it's a done deal.
For the yanks that is.
ReggieBullits - December 8, 2009
Yep. Yanks get Granderson.
Turks Teeth - December 8, 2009
Is it just me . . .
or did the Yankees get fleeced?
krush40 - December 8, 2009
Coke, Austin Jackson, and Kennedy for Granderson seems steep.
Tigers get some real nice pieces for an overrated Edwin Jackson (who should benefit going to NL) and Granderson.
krush40 - December 8, 2009
They always get fleeced.
Yet they’re still so good…
Clutch - December 8, 2009
I completely agree.
The Yankees gave up their best prospects for a guy who’s decent… but he’s not meltyour-face awesome.
I want to say that I’m glad that all the Granderson talk will be done now on HH, but who am I kidding? We’ll be talking about Granderson in August because on HH our jokes never die. Just ask Quentin.
BruinHalo - December 8, 2009
We can shift attention from Granderson to...
Carl Crawford…or Cindy Crawford for that matter.
sothball - December 8, 2009
You just know that whenever something goes wrong
we’ll blame it on not having Granderson.
TheKingfish - December 8, 2009
Especially when playing the skanks.
red floyd - December 8, 2009
I don't know what they're thinking over there on River Street
They traded away three players—their top prospect and two useful pitchers—to turn the white Johnny Damon into the black Johnny Damon. Racial progress is great and all, it was rather sad to see just one African-American on last year’s World Series winner., but obviously that’s not what’s motivating the Yankees.
Granderson is younger and cheaper than Damon, but he’s not exactly an upgrade. In reality, they’re just getting older by moving three young players for a 29 year-old, including one with the same skill set as Granderson. I just don’t get it. I’m not getting any dynastic vibes from this new Yankee order, which looks a lot like the old one. A small comfort, at least.
Suboptimal - December 8, 2009
I'm worried
Granderson kills us, the right field porch at Yankee stadium is tailor made for a punk like him as well.
I’ve always respected the guy because of the damage he does against the Angels, and the road to the WS just go that much tougher for us.
Considering the payroll that NY took on with Granderson is less than what they shed with letting Damon go, I can see them putting Melky in LF (regardless of trade rumors) and going for the jugular and signing Lackey to be their #2.
I can only hope that Big John wants to be a #1 not a #2 but I have the feeling/facts that the real numbers that matter to John are represented by $$$.
jtkelly86 - December 8, 2009
for the money
Big John will be a #6 and laugh all the way to the bank.
Rev Halofan - December 8, 2009
better fire on bay
I think we need to get bay before the yanks with all that extra money decide we can add him as well… they dont need damon or matsui now that they picked up curtis! the yankees just got better. can we change divisions and play in the AL central please
J WEAV Express - December 8, 2009
He's not untouchable
but I’d save him to use him in a trade for Doc
Moondoggy - December 8, 2009
Boras gets pooched
Damon falls from getting the elite dough with the Yanks’ Granderson acquisition.
Rev Halofan - December 8, 2009

So what does Damon do now? I think he’d be worth a 2-year deal. Heck, maybe he’d even take 1 year and hope that the baseball economy improves a bit over the next year. He’d cost the Angels nothing but money – no prospects, no draft choices.
jjackflash - December 8, 2009
Vote NO on Damon!
There is NO room on the Angels roster for that weak-ass arm!
K3YEROUT - December 8, 2009
that weakass arm
didn’t prevent the Yankees from winning the WS.
jjackflash - December 8, 2009
It sure didn't help.
Hitting in that highschool style ballpark did.
Teixeira Who? - December 8, 2009
yankees please do it
get rid of some of your best prospects for an overrated Granderson!! PLEASE
princeton11loveshalos - December 8, 2009
Wait. What?
Are you saying the Angels may start this season without Granderson? I haven’t thought of any 2010 Angels season scenarios that don’t involve Granderson. This must be a mistake.
jaycer - December 8, 2009
honestly
this trade will make me happy
makes the halladay trade harder for the yankees.
princeton11loveshalos - December 8, 2009
good point
Rev Halofan - December 8, 2009
Ya, I was thinking the same thing
As I recall Toronto was insisting on Austin Jackson being part of the package.
~MMP~ - December 8, 2009

While Granderson is obviously a defensive upgrade, I gotta believe that Johnny Damon is a better offensive player. I don’t think this makes the Yankees better.
jjackflash - December 8, 2009
there are no steroids in baseball...
just players Curtis Granderson has breathed on.
Nashdiesel - December 8, 2009
Win.
Clutch - December 8, 2009
So Curtis Granderson is the Chuck Norris of baseball?
red floyd - December 8, 2009

granderson is much better on the defense side of the ball… He also has good power! ask jered weaver it seems like he bombs weave every time they face off! now he will be in a stadium that isnt 420 to cf and 335 to right foul pole… his power numbers will go up…. the yankees just got speed as well something that could make them a more dangerous! and the most important thing… they got younger!!!
J WEAV Express - December 8, 2009
um they didnt get younger
I think jjackflash mentioned that granderson was an upgrade on D. they traded their future CF and some of their pitching in order to get an older CF (not saying 29 is old) Also Damon hit 25 HR’s but I think he will also have better power #s
princeton11loveshalos - December 8, 2009
Meh
Yeah, it’s “only” 408 to CF. Your point about the short RF porch isn’t very illuminating. Any LH batter will thrive there, regardless of whether he’s a power guy or not. And nothing changes the fact that Granderson is a platoon player. Younger, yes; better defensively, yes. But not a better hitter or baserunner than Damon.
jjackflash - December 8, 2009
but if they shut down Boras
Granderson is more valuable because he lowers player prices for years to come.
Rev Halofan - December 8, 2009
+1000
jjackflash - December 8, 2009
Better hitter?
Can you please reference the metric that indicates Damon is a better hitter. So far using Baseball Reference, I don’t see it.
And in all occasions, you’re looking at Damon at either Fenway (inflated BA) or Yankee Stadium (Short Pull Porch), vs. Granderson at rather pitcher friendly
MidwayCityLivestock - December 8, 2009
Road #s
Damon’s career road: .285/.344/.437
2009: .284/.349/.446
Granderson: .284/.353/.516, on the road, career.
What’s disturbing about Granderson is this:
.210/.270/.344
Those are his career #s v LHP.
It got worse last year.
.183/.245/.239
Damon can play every day; Granderson cannot.
jjackflash - December 8, 2009
Just delays Halladay's pinstripes a year
UK Halo - December 8, 2009
So do all the game thread jokes now occur versus the NYY?
red floyd - December 8, 2009
Something tells me if this deal goes through
Boras isn’t gonna be happy, since I would think it would drop what Damon is likely to get quite a bit.
~MMP~ - December 8, 2009
Ninja Time
Time for Reagins to swoop in and sign Damon to a short-term deal.
jjackflash - December 8, 2009
You've got a thing for Damon, dontcha?
Do you like the caveman look or the Madison Ave version?
Slasher52 - December 8, 2009
I think the best thing about Damon
and possibly the only decent thing about the Red Sox was that T-Shirt which came out when he signed with NYY- “Johnny Damon, Looks like Jesus, acts like Judas, throws like Mary”
DCS1122 - December 8, 2009
Hahahahaha
So bad, yet so true, and so so funny.
Clutch - December 8, 2009
you mean like i said
up there earlier in this conversation? Yeah. I agree with you agreeing with me.
Rev Halofan - December 8, 2009
Dude
The Tigers got a bounty of talent. Scherzer, Action Jackson, and Coke? Damn.
Slasher52 - December 8, 2009
I'm more concerned
Now the Tigers go after Halladay. They’ve got the young talent.
Jay Cal - December 8, 2009
seriously???
The Tigers have NO MONEY.
jjackflash - December 8, 2009
What if...
They make a deal to move M-Cab to the Red Sox. That’ll free up a ton of cash.
Jay Cal - December 8, 2009
So?
They’re trying to shed payroll, and they’re not in it to win this year. You really think that Halladay would approve a trade to Detroit? I didn’t think so. And how would substituting Halladay’s salary for Cabrera’s help them bring down costs?
jjackflash - December 8, 2009
I'm being more facetious
then anything else
Jay Cal - December 8, 2009
Ah
jjackflash - December 8, 2009
Dude detriot is fucked up.
the economy is so bad over there, no way they get Halladay.
SenorChuckles - December 8, 2009
Looks like Yanks gave up a lot of talent
Good for us.
Slyintine - December 8, 2009
I just don't see it.
Why give up that much for an outfielder who is useless against left handed pitching?
10 27 02 - December 8, 2009
Because in short porch Yankee Stadium
They will gladly platoon him for those pop fly HRs to RF
Rev Halofan - December 8, 2009
THE GRANDERSON DEAL IS OVER, HOOORAY!!!!!
LAWL!!!! The Diamondbacks win this one big time! The best part is that this probably wasn’t even their idea and they probably had to be talked into it by either NY or Detroit. I hope the Yankees are ready to get a healthy dose of every left-handed starter and reliever in the AL, especially from potential playoff opponents like the Angels, Twins, White Sox, or even Detroit. They know a thing or two about Granderson vs lefties…
Thank You Reagins, for passing on this terrible idea.
Commander_Nate - December 8, 2009
Are you serious?
The Dbacks got hosed.
5 years of Max > 2 years of Jackson
6 years of Schlereth > 6 years of Kennedy
krush40 - December 8, 2009
So you're saying the Tigers won out?
Slyintine - December 8, 2009
Absolutely
Tigers not only shed payroll which they needed/wanted to do and in the mean time brought back a pretty hefty haul.
Ajax is a top OF prospect to replace Granderson.
5 years of Max Scherzer for 2 of Edwin Jackson who is vastly overrated
Daniel Schlereth is a pretty high RP prospect and Coke is pretty solid in the pen.
Yanks paid a lot to get Granderson, but have the cash to replace those players like they always do. Dbacks gave up prospects, are more expensive and got older in the process while still not having a very good team.
krush40 - December 8, 2009
Son of Mark...
Schlereth…of Denver Broncos, Wash Redskins fame…
K3YEROUT - December 8, 2009
Scherzer
Some observers have said that he’s a TJ surgery candidate-in-waiting. Jackson is obviously more developed. If he becomes a true front of the rotation guy, he also becomes a type A free agent in a couple of years, so there’s that.
jjackflash - December 8, 2009
Krod
is a TJ surgery candidate as well.
Compare Edwin and Max’s numbers at equal points in their careers. Max is a better pitcher than Edwin in my eyes. Max has a much better chance of becoming “front of the rotation guy” than Edwin ever will.
krush40 - December 8, 2009
Debut
The D-Backs probably just remember Jackson’s ML debut against them several years ago.
jjackflash - December 8, 2009
Should be a great ALCS next year then...
with all our left handed relievers…
DCS1122 - December 8, 2009
Well, the Yankees and Tigers sure didn't win
Arizona got a good starter and another decent one for an average pitcher. Now they have money to spend on offense and relievers instead of a starter like they planned on.
I’d say that’s a pretty good deal compared to what the Yankees and Tigers got.
Commander_Nate - December 8, 2009
You and I
have very different views on baseball my friend.
krush40 - December 8, 2009
Scherzer is much more than an average pitcher
He’s got every chance of being a #1
UK Halo - December 8, 2009
Everyone's talking like the Yankees play by the same rules as all the other clubs.
And they don’t.
Listen, if Austin Jackson turns out to be some great player, rest assured that when that time comes he’ll be a Yankee again. Anything else is extremely short sighted.
The Yankees will gladly let some other team develop the guy; sure, let him go get his first few years of struggling done in the majors somewhere else. If he turns out to be great they’ll be the high bidder.
Seriously, does anyone really doubt this?
In the mean time, Curtis Granderson fits in extremely well with that team. And he’s a cheap contract as far as they’re concerned. He’s significantly less than Figgins. He hit 30 HR’s this year or something ridiculous like that, and while it’s true that his OBP is fairly meddling for an AL leadoff guy, he’s definitely an impact player on offense, who’s now gonna be setting the table (when he’s not hitting jacks himself) for Jeter, ARod and Tex.
This business about the Yankees getting older would mean something if you were talking about a different franchise; unfortunately we’re not. They’re not in the business of developing young guys; they’re in the business of buying prime real estate for TODAY. It’s just more of the same, the Yankees buying themselves another very good player from another team that’s decided it’s time to dump payroll and try to rebuild again, as I’m guessing the Tigers are already planning their moves subsequent to Maglio’s deal finally being done and gone.
I’m so sick of these Fort Knox Yankees. I swear to god if they pull the trigger on Lackey I might go over the frigging edge.
goodvibe61 - December 8, 2009
So true.
Hadn’t thought of it this way before.
Clutch - December 8, 2009
And I, too, might go over the edge if they sign Lackey
And/or trade for Halladay. And/or acquire Jason Bay.
That would just be goodnight Vienna, see you all in about 15 years when baseball might be competitive again.
Clutch - December 8, 2009
Oh really?
let them trade away their young kids, just because NY does all this does not mean they are a lock for the WS. Let them get Lackey It would be even sweeter when Halladay is holding the ALCS MVP for your very own Angels.
SenorChuckles - December 8, 2009
edwin jackson and curtis granderson are worth that much?
really? seriously? how the hell did detroit pull this off?
retrohalo - December 8, 2009
Granderson is a 4 WAR CF signed to a team friendly contract.
Jackson though … no explanation.
