Wow this is a not-so-crazy rumor: Joel Sherman in the NY POST says that the New York Mets want to trade for Angels outfielder Juan Rivera.

Rivera has two years for $9+ Million left on his contract and Mats GM Omar Minaya loves him, having traded for him once before when he was the GM of the Montreal Expos earlier this decade. If the Angels are serious about acquiring Jason Bay, it would make sense to move Johnny Rivers.
Considering that we need bullpen help I perused the Mets roster.. but damn is that cupboard ever bare over there... check out the Mets roster and suggest a possible trade... the only player of interest I found over there was pitcher Tobi Stoner and that is just because he has the coolest name in baseball. If we packaged Rivera with a minor league prospect do the Mets have anything attractive that we could use? Ugh, doesn't seem so...

I could see Rivera going to the Mets
but it would probably have to be for prospects…. say, some prospects that the Blue Jays may be interested in?
howiestheman - December 7, 2009
The question isn't what the Mets could give us...
its what the Mets could give Toronto.
Jay Cal - December 7, 2009
maybe the mets can give us a decent SS prospect.
Reyes!
SenorChuckles - December 7, 2009
I was just about to say
this has 3 way trade written all over it. Maybe for Doc, maybe not. Either way, I just can’t imagine they have anything worth giving up Juan for.
ihearhowie2.0 - December 7, 2009
agreed
Minaya can ship those players Toronto’s way. No need to thin out our minor league corps.

Package Rivera or Napoli and some doodz for Vazquez.

Quoting from Cot’s:
Let’s be realistic for a moment: The guy felt strongly enough about this to have it baked into the deal he signed with the White Sox in 2007, after having been acquired from the Diamonbacks (Vasquez didn’t want to go that far from home, but at that time he lacked the contractual wherewithal to block it from happening).
He doesn’t want to play any farther away from his family than the AL or NL Central divisions.

If Rivera goes to Mets...
I think this opens the door for Vlad to come back (at a reasonable rate) as the DH. This is also assuming we sign Bay to play LF.

I dont know
I kind of like the idea of Bay DH’ing every once in a while.
ihearhowie2.0 - December 7, 2009
Rivera and Wood for David Wright
There, I said it. That’s about the only player I’d give up Wood for. I mean, uh, wait, that didn’t come out right. And I enjoy the Mets.
That, or Johnny Rivers and GMJ for Johan Santana. That’s an extremely fair offer, but if the Mets want to make it even more fair they can throw in Jose Reyes.
Clutch - December 7, 2009
your going to need to add an arm at least.
Give them the other Johan Santana?

The “Who goofed, I’ve got to know” was Al Michaels. I had no idea. The more you know…
Slasher52 - December 7, 2009
No shit?
I always thought that was Cosell.
George Kaplan - December 7, 2009
That's what the site says
Believe it as much as you trust anything on the internet. I thought it was Cosell too, but I can see in my mind’s eye a young Al Michaels saying that.
Slasher52 - December 7, 2009
The original is Cosell
It’s from a long tape wherein Cosell explodes when he finds out that the recording studio he has scheduled a session for is not ready for him, and he has a limited time before he has to catch a train to do Monday Night Football. Later, Al Michaels did his impression of the quote. Healy played both.
rspencer - December 7, 2009

Spank me and call me Suzie.
Slasher52 - December 7, 2009 via mobile
espencer is right
That is exactly as i recall it – one day Healy played the extended tape, it was Cosell asking who goofed so he could get whoever goofed FIRED. Man, Jim Healy ripped into him something awesome – of course it was years after the fact, but still awesome.
Rev Halofan - December 7, 2009
I've heard Al Michaels talk about this at length
Cosell was of course one of Healy’s favorite targets. According to Michaels, Cosell pretended indifference, but he always kept very close tabs on what Healy was saying, and he was obviously quite obsessed by it. Eventually he learned that someone at KABC was sending Cosell tapes of the show every day.
The funny thing is that Cosell actually did have a perfect right to be angry in this case, but instead of trying to fix the situation, his only interest was in finding out who goofed so he could exact revenge. Fortunately for us, this all happened in a recording studio, and someone was rolling tape.

Trade Rivera for some decent prospects
that will free up some of our budget for Halladay, Bay, Lackey, or whoever. I would really like to see Granderson trade also. Bay will cost at least $16M and Granderson is relatively cheaper so i would prefer Granderson over Bay but fine with either one so just BRING SOMEBODY PLZ TONY C’mon… nd get rid of GMJ for any prospect.. 1:1 trade with SINGLE A player would be just fine… if any retard wants that trade
Applets - December 7, 2009
How in the world can you prefer Granderson over Bay?
Besides steals Bay does absolutely every better than Granderson offensively
PhiSlamma - December 7, 2009
But,...but,...Granderson is the best player EVER!
HOW CAN YOU DENY THIS?? :-D
Clutch - December 7, 2009
Considering..
Contract, Age, and Defense. Also speed is the huge part because he can steal once he is on base although his OBP and hitting against lefty were pretty much below average last season. And this guy can make some plays on defense.. well i always like young players over kinda old players (Bay is 31 so not so old but comparing to Granderson) so.. thats just my opinion..
Applets - December 7, 2009
Aw, geez....
Dude, seriously, had you bothered to look at Rivera’s deal before you decided to let your fingers display Tourette’s?
He is scheduled to make $4.25M this year and $5.25M next year.
In the meantime, there are some here lobbying to sign Bay for something approximating Hunter’s $19M per year.
Or others who are seriously pimping the idea of trading for Curtis Granderson, who will make (notice, I didn’t write “earn”) $26M over the next three seasons.
Rivera is a fucking steal. Why would you wish to piss him away for a prospect, just so that you can save his relatively meager salary?
George Kaplan - December 7, 2009
You, I like you
You and I must continue to mount an enthusiastic defense of reason. In this case that means prioritizing a trade of GMJ.
That is how you free up salary for other things. You don’t do it by trading a player like Rivera who is easily worth twice his salary.
Commander_Nate - December 7, 2009
There is no trade for GMJ. He has no value due to his contract.
You’ll hear rumors about Rivera because unlike GMJ, he provides value that exceeds his contract. This is what other teams want, not our problems.
Another team has to consent to a trade. Otherwise GMJ would have been traded two years ago.
snowhor - December 7, 2009
If Johan wasn't so DAMN expensive
TheAntiSox - December 7, 2009
No reason to give up Rivera when
he is being paid below market value for above average production. Sign Bay, put him in LF, put Rivera in RF and let Abreu DH. They can rotate as needed and GMJ can spell them when needed. This team needs more mashers, not less, and the $4.5 million Rivera makes isn’t precluding them from signing Bay. It doesn’t have to be an either/or.
This team needs offense…keep Rivera and ADD a bat.
jimmuscomp - December 7, 2009
Exactly my thoughts
Napoli would be the odd man out in this situation.
I can see him involved in a trade shortly after signing Bay.
PhiSlamma - December 7, 2009
ummm
i wasn’t aware any of those guys were the starting catcher. Napoli is still our catcher, and hopefully, Mathis is still our backup. the only way he’s the odd man out is in the DH slot, which is rarely saw anyway
howiestheman - December 7, 2009
Mathis proved this post-season
that he can hit when it counts. And his defense is greater than Napolis. Napoli is to see more at bats at DH now, unless we acquire another outfielder.
Jay Cal - December 8, 2009
Agree on the Mathis and his defense being better than Naps, but no on the offense
Too small of a sample size in the playoffs to conclude that Mathis somehow can finally hit MLB pitching consistently
stolenbases - December 8, 2009
You don't trade Rivera
just to free up space. He’s too cheap. You have to get something really good back for him. Or else package him with Matthews.
RallyMonkey5 - December 7, 2009
Hell No!!!!!!!
At Rivera’s salary level he is just as good a deal as Abreu was last year. And he defends better than both Abreu and Bay.
That and I just broke his jersey in with 2 playoff wins. I’m not f***in’ buying another one!!
Commander_Nate - December 7, 2009

Rivera to Mets
Try for John Maine. Mets are trying to unload him and have been in discussions with Brewers to trade Cory Hart for John Maine.
Don’t understand this rumor since if the Angels do sign Bay (he’s a LF and not a RF) why not just shift Rivera to RF/DH? He’s cheap and had a good year in 2009. Only other thought is Arte wants to re-sign Vlad to be DH so Abreu plays RF and Maine becomes #5 starter replacing Lackey in the rotation.
ksangel - December 8, 2009
NO!!!! I will not have this!!!!! Not Juancho The Bat Sniffer!!! HE MUST STAY HERE WITH ME!!!!!!
TSamn15 - December 8, 2009

unload GMJ - The PROBLEM
Coco Crisp wants $2-3M.
GMJ earns $11M?
And who would not want a player named after a kids cereal? What a marketing bonaza.
I would miss the “Battsniffer”. AAH. Pinetar.
ksangel - December 8, 2009
For those saying GMJ is untradeable
There’s been enough rumors online to indicate otherwise. I was also listening to “The Drive” last night and whoever Biggs was talking to in Indy said it appears the Angels do actually have some suitors for him.
One of the possible scenarios he mentioned was a three way deal with the Angels, Cubs, and Mets involving GMJ, Bradley, and Luis Castillo (I think). He didn’t have details, but if that trade involved just us moving GMJ and at least half of his salary at a minimum, I’d take it.
The Cubs getting GMJ and Castillo, the Mets getting Bradely and us getting another $11 million or so to spend sounds good to me. Then we can keep Juan Rivera who we would be idiotic to trade.
Commander_Nate - December 8, 2009
Agreed.
I don’t see who the Mets have to make this a good move for Rivera. But if we’re simply adding Matthews to the equation to drop some salary, works for me.
Jay Cal - December 8, 2009
So who do we get in that trade?
The only way to trade him is for someone else’s expensive problem. Why trade one for another?
These rumors are bullshit.
snowhor - December 8, 2009
