Who Replaces John Lackey: Halolinks

Halos have options if Lackey leaves - angelsbaseball.com
They'll no doubt explore various options, in free agency and the trade market, but they're not exactly desperate with candidates such as Matt Palmer, Dustin Moseley, Sean O'Sullivan and Trevor Bell in house to fill the need.

Palmer, Moseley, SOS, and Bell?  Not too excited about those replacement names.

Angels' owner not quite ready to see Lackey go -  FOX Sports on MSN
Club officials had all but decided to part with Lackey during the team's organizational meetings at the end of the regular season, according to multiple major-league sources. But Moreno, after watching Lackey pitch well in his three postseason starts against the Red Sox and Yankees, decided that the Angels should renew their efforts to sign him, the sources said.

Hey!  Who's running this team?  Oh yeah, nevermind.

Winter meetings: AL West primer -  Yahoo! Sports
Despite their desire to keep payroll at about $113 million, the Angels likely will acquire one marquee player because they know standing pat would result only in another playoff loss to the Red Sox or Yankees.

One marquee player?  But who?  Jamie Carroll?

A's acquire Fox, Miles from Cubs for three players -  CBSSports.com Baseball
The Oakland Athletics took a big step toward boosting their lackluster offense. The A's acquired third baseman Jake Fox, second baseman Aaron Miles and cash considerations from the Chicago Cubs on Thursday for three players. The Cubs got right-handed pitcher Jeff Gray, minor league outfielder Matt Spencer and minor league righty Ronny Morla.

Well, I guess that marquee player's not going to be Jake Fox.

Source: Red Sox agree to deal with INF Scutaro -  FOX Sports on MSN
The Boston Red Sox have reached a deal with infielder Marco Scutaro, pending a physical, according to a major-league source. Scutaro, 34, spent the past two seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays. He hit .282 with 12 home runs and 14 stolen bases last season.

Or Marco Scutaro.

Braves make another pitching move, add ex-All-Star reliever Saito -  CBSSports.com Baseball
Saito, who turns 40 in February, has 83 saves in four major league seasons after a long career in Japan. He made the National League All-Star team in 2007, when he had 39 saves for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Last season, the right-hander went 3-3 with two saves and a 2.43 ERA in a setup role for the Boston Red Sox. Saito is expected to remain in that spot with the Braves, who signed closer Billy Wagner to a $7 million, one-year deal on Wednesday, though there might be an occasional chance to save games.

Or Takashi Saito.

Dick Enberg hopes to show he's still got his fastball -  SI.com
Enberg began his full-time broadcasting career in 1965 in Los Angeles as the radio and television voice of the California Angels, UCLA basketball and the Los Angeles Rams.

Or Dick Enberg!  Dammit, somebody call and wake up the Angels front office!

Texas Rangers ownership race takes bizarre twist, keeping Ryan in mix - Star-Telegram
But based on confirmation from those close to the situation, Nolan would have resigned his position if Hicks’ new ownership partnership with Dennis Gilbert, a Californian, eventually had been approved by Major League Baseball.

Those damn Californians screwing things up in Texas again!

those name aren't.....

even close to acceptable as replacements….please.

Relating Scutaro and Polanco to Figgy.

Scutaro’s deal averages out to around $6M a year. Polanco got 3 years / $18 mil. Does this mean that Figgy is worth between $7-8 mil annually? Would 4 years / $30mil get the job done? Seems like a fair deal to me.

The poll is absurd

Please – add an option to vote for “none of the above”. Replacing Lackey with Moseley, Palmer, SOS, or Bell is just ridiculous.

The poll reflects the ridiculousness of the angels.com article

The article states that the Angels aren’t desperate because they can use one of those four as a replacement. Something most fans realize is “absurd”, but if the Angels do nothing as far as a free agent or trade to replace Lackey, one of those four has to step up.

That is the purpose of the poll.

Can estiban yan replace lackey?

or how about a speier tour de force? maybe a HH poster can step up and fill the role?

Those guys should be starters 6,7,8, and 9

If Lackey doesn’t come back, the team really needs to kick the tires on Sheets and Harden, or explore a trade for Meche, Arroyo, Harang… Not to get too caught up in a fifth starter, but if just one of our big guys goes down, now you’re looking at TWO of those scrubs filling out the rotation. We survived it this past season with Lackey in tow; do we really want to try it again without him?

I vote "present"

like obama usually did in his short career as a senator.

none of these guys can replace lackey, true. but it`s also silly to pick 1 to fill the 5th spot now. we just need to wait and see who does best in spring.

See my comment above ^
A senator at the federal level cannot vote "present".

Perhaps you were referring to the Illinois state senate, where over his decade in office, roughly 3% of his votes were “present”, lower than the average Illinois state senator. GOP state senators also defend voting “present” when bills are badly written, have unconstitutional elements or are omnibus packages with a mix of decent and awful provisions.

Id like to see Bell as a 5th starter.

Halladay might be a pipe dream and Lackey might ask for too much. But with Bell I remember them saying he needed to develop another pitch. But then again we are the Angels and I’m sure there is one decent pitcher out there wanting to go to a winning organization. Maybe one of the four steps up during spring training.

I see your "present" and raise you a fist-pound

In all seriousness though, I was torn between Moesely and Palmer on this one and went with Palmer in the end. Either one of them can be a passable #5 and long reliever.

In reality though I think Moreno is going to go balls out, if not for Lackey than for some other top pitcher. ‘09 was the first time the Angels tickled the World Series under his ownership. Yeah we went to the ALCS in ’05 but we looked like crap. This year we pounded our way to the ALCS and offered the most resistance out of anyone to the Yankees. Hell we probably would’ve won if a few errors and Brian Fuentes’ pitch selection were subtracted.

I think Arte is hooked now on seeking revenge against the AL East. After that it’s all gravy, no NL team can beat a premier AL team, not even the Phillies. And as it stands now the premier AL teams are the Yankees, Red Sox, and Angels.

Why do care about our 5th starter?

What did our deep rotation do for us in the playoffs? Nothing. The Yankees won the WS with basically 3 starters.

Who cares if we have to trot Mosely/Bell/Sullivan out there every 5th day when come playoff time they are going to the pen anyway.

    Our rotation is fine.

because we need to get to the playoffs first
And if someone gets hurt?

We’re up to using TWO of those guys in the rotation. And if two guys get hurt (we know it can happen)? Now we’re using THREE of those guys. We need one more established starter. None of those other guys are more than filler, at this point.

There is a trade rumor that consists of...

Reckling, Wood, Richards, and Chafee for Halladay. This means they build for the future which would make more sense, anyone know about this Richards and Chafee?

Source?
not a rumor, its just a blue jay fan trade proposal :(
well..

that’s about as useful as a degree from the university of phoenix.

I freaking hate Scutaro.....he's always been a damn thorn in our sides......

fitting that the Sux scooped him up……ugh. Even more reason to hate that guy.

tough decision

I think we have to wait until spring training to even think about choosing one of those starters. If that is what we got at the start of the season then i really really hope one of those guys steps it up a little bit. Hopefully one of those guys will have improved on a pitch, established a new pitch, or just outperforms everyone. But if those four pitch like they did last season I would have to go with Palmer and be constantly worrying about make the playoffs.

Re-sign Lackey

Or get Halladay- If we don’t, I don’t see us as the Champions of the West next year, which would be a sure thing with either one of those two. On second thought, Randy Wolf might be a stopgap replacement if he’ll take a one year deal, but I don’t think he will do that, Someone else will scoop him up for two, three or four years and over pay him..

We’d have to overpay for Sheets and Harden as well (and give them multiple years) so I don’t think they are good choices either. Which brings me back to my point- get Lackey or Halladay if you want to win the West again!
