Below the jump are the Angels' prospects who are eligible for selection in the Rule 5 draft. Mount, Statia, Moore, and Mendoza have all graced the Angels' top prospect rankings in the past, and Mendoza in particular is coming off of a strong season. I can see him and/or Marco Albano having the most short-term and long-term value to a poaching club. I based the list on my Wikipedia-deep understanding of the Rule 5 draft, so if there are errors, please point out the necessary corrections.

Position Players
Bradley Coon
Nate Sutton
Abel Nieves
Pitchers
Tommy Mendoza
Marco Albano

Did the Angels
keep a clone of K-Rod hidden in the farm system all this time??

hah, it would be crazy if he wore goggles too.

If we lose anyone
It’ll probably be a pitcher

Correction
Ken Herndon goes by David Herndon and Gary Browning goes by Barret Browning.

Heh - not according to baseball reference.
Of course, Jeremy Moore is also known as Jerome in those parts, so it happens. Good catch. Thanks.

Well
I believe BR lists their first name, not the name they choose to go by.

My Guess
A Rule-5 pick has to be on the claiming team’s 25-man roster (or the DL) for an entire season; otherwise, the original team can get him back by paying $25,000, or whatever the claiming fee is today. Since a Rule 5 pick is often someone who’s not quite ready for prime time, it’s hard to hide him on the roster, but it’s easier if it’s a pitcher who simply becomes the last man in the pen/mopup guy.
Given that, I think Tommy Mendoza is the most likely to get nabbed. I could also see Statia going to a headed-nowhere team as a utility infielder. Interesting note: Statia played on the Bert Blyleven-managed Netherlands team that competed in the WBC earlier this year.

how come we never got O'Day back?
I think they have to clear waivers back to us.
Wally's World - November 23, 2009
Yeah, Texas claimed him first.
F—er’s. Good steal for them, btw.

I think
we had a chance before anyone to claim him back we just didnt
what a bad mistake by us

I remember
The fo said he wasn’t in our plans for the future. Big mistake

The Rangers also took Warner Madrigal
It wasn’t rule 5, but the team had added him to the 40 man a couple of years ago, only to “forget” that he was a minor league free agent.
As long as his ERA stays around 6 for his career, I guess I really don’t care.

I thought
that you had to be 23 to be selected in the rule 5 draft… Mendoza is only 22 and wont be 23 until August. Is that true?
Vladd#27 - November 23, 2009
5 years
He has been in the organization for 5 years, though. If you sign at 18 or younger, then it’s 5 years. He signed when he was 18. He just completed his 5th year in the organization.
jjackflash - November 23, 2009
oh
i guess i thought 23 because we normally draft high schoolers who are 18 then 5 years in the org they would normally be 23
Vladd#27 - November 24, 2009
Quick Signing
Mendoza signed the year he was drafted, and played in the organization that year. Thus, his age 18 year was his first in the organization. His 5th year was his age 22 season. That is now completed. Though he won’t turn 23 until August, next year is still his age 23 season, and his sixth as a professional.
