Tony Reagins Speaks, Media Hints at Angels Front Office Tension

General Manager Tony Reagins commented on all the trade rumors out there in the LA TIMES - just like me and many here he said that a lot of these rumors don't make sense.

In a bitch-slap to Scott Boras, the Angels GM specifically said the Angels are not pursuing Boras client Matt Holliday. Reagins said his priorities are RE-signing John Lackey and Chone Figgins and that Vladimir Guerrero and Darren Oliver are definitely on the team's radar as well.

Conclusion from these comments: Tony Reagins seems to understand that you don't blow up a 97-win team.

The Times' Mike DiGiovanna hinted at the tension surrounding the shakeup in the Angels front office when he noted that despite the current shakeups in management, payroll would not be affected.

Though the Angels are in the midst of a front-office reorganization that resulted in the loss of positions in the media relations and community relations department last week, Reagins doesn't expect the team's payroll -- about $113 million in 2008 -- to be reduced significantly.

Why would the Times bring up the team's on-field payroll in mentioning a shakeup involving a community affairs director and a media contact person whose combined salary is half of the major league minimum of a rookie player? Would it maybe be from an independent blog waking them up? Stay tuned.

Well, one perfectly reasonable explanation might be

that the team does not want the public to draw any wrong conclusions about reducing front office staff. In this economy, the reflex upon hearing about downsizing is to think that the organization needs to tighten its purse strings. With a normal company, that includes payroll. With a baseball team, “payroll” means player talent. Let’s not get things confused here, is probably what is being said.

No Holliday is fine with me, just sign Bay ;)
eBay?

They should eBay Matthews.

eBay

other teams will laugh at his Buy It Now price.

everyone except the pirates
No thanks to Bay

His defense is so horrendous that if he does not play DH a significant portion of the season, and his bat declines somehow from now having a 20 foot wall 15 feet away in left field, then he will be just as bad as GMJ.

http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/highs-and-lows-of-uzr-2007-9-bay

Just read that, and please stop the Bay chants.

that being said...

didnt fangraphs rate Juan Rivera the worst base-runner in the league?

Vlad should feel slighted.
I believe it

I think the Molina brothers could outrun him. He didn’t have a single stolen base all season (although he did have one in the ALDS. What the hell?)

He did receive the award for best frosted-tips in the league, however.
lol

ive always wanted to say that.

Let's offer Buy It Now

and Free Shipping!!!

I voted for Tony.

The other two were “Reagan”s, not “Reagins”.

And the balding guy

wants to regain his rogain prescription while he watches Fred Rogan regun for a punch line…

…mocking Donald Regan’s promotion of Reaganomics While Chief Of Staff during the presidency of Ronald Reagan

The Exorcist character was Regan.
needed a ray gun

to regain the rigatoni the devil stole.

Ha! Almost punny.
That the devil stole from the Redskins' John Riggins.
Soth said at the end of the season he wanted the same team back he had in 2009.

Maybe he will get his way.

well

well we all know that isn’t going to happen with 4 free agents. right? but even if it did, what wiggle room does that leave us to improve on 2009? any? we’d be hampered by the same things, Vlad’s inability to play the field, Figgy holding back Wood at 3rd, GMJ hanging around our neck, and the total salary keeping us from making any other roster moves. and was he referring to pre-Kazmir or post? I’m fairly serious about that.

how many fans were really that enamored with the 2009 team? they did the best they could and ran out of gas against the champs in 6 games. a respectable performance, but judging on some of our guys’ performances in the postseason, I don’t think rolling it all over into 2010 is necessarily the best thing anyway.

don’t we need to move on? don’t we have guys waiting in the wings? didn’t Vlad do just about everything he could do in an Angel uniform (as much as that pains me to say)?

I was behind this team 110% until the very last out, but even the most ardent fan has to recognize there are serious flaws to be addressed. I really want to hear Soth’s quote to see if I am not grasping something that might be hidden in the context. I think I get what he was saying, but

forgot to add

weren’t we suspiciously short on pitching at times, near the end of the run.

"In a bitch-slap to Scott Boras..."

Any article that puts “bitch-slap” and “Scott Boras” in the same sentence gets an automatic nod of approval from me.

+1

Rev has a way with the words…we think it, he writes it.
