So two Yankees are tagged not standing on a base, what happens? One is called safe. This is just one of many instances this postseason where the most ratings-friendly team in baseball located in a favorable media market is being gifted more opportunities to score and to wear down the opposing pitcher.
Numerous calls that should have gone the Angels' way and a strike zone the ignored the knees and letters to an Angels starter, Scott Kazmir, who lives on the outer limits of the plate can only add to the frustration as anyone with an historical appreciation of the game can practically smell a media-industrial complex version of Arnold Rothstein collaborating to celebrate the 80th birthday of the Chicago Black Sox in corrupt style.
The soul-killing effect of knowing that the Yankees were getting all the calls while the Yankees were getting ther money's worth out of starter CC Sabathia drowned what was the biggest Angels threat of the evening. It began with a Kendry Morales solo homer and was suddenly two men on with nobody out - but the Angels reverted to their hacking of old and formerly nails-versus lefties Juan Rivera grounded a 2-1 pitch into a double play that was the twist of the knife on the game, and perhaps the season.
But John Lackey faces A.J. Burnett on Thursday night and 6 teams in baseball history have come back down 3 games to 1 to win a 7 game series, so the ALCS may be far from over. If only the phone records and bank statements of the umpiring crew could be more closely scrutinized prior to Thursday evening.

Where is Kaz on this list?
How can the guy that shit down his leg for the 2nd time in the playoffs not be a choice?

I think he's replying to himself trying to say you're better than Soth.

The only thing this series has done is rekindle my hatred for the Skanks
I really hope the Angels make some big moves this off season.
chairmanofthebar - October 20, 2009
yup
bruinbrah - October 20, 2009
Big moves?
nah we can win with what we got its just that most of our players are not in their prime and some are past it :(
SenorChuckles - October 20, 2009
Lackey's price tag just went through the roof......
Downing Rules - October 20, 2009
+1
“so this is your new ace, yes”? (insert lackeys shit eating grin)
clover_black - October 20, 2009
whatever, wait till tomorrow.
If he beats them, then yes, otherwise he is just another pile of shit.
Big Bad, 'Vlad'! - October 20, 2009
Huge if
He hasnt shown me shit this postseason. D got him out of some jams
bruinbrah - October 20, 2009
Pretty ignorant thing to say.
lackey has proved that he can win in the post season, given the minimum of run support.Dude has been a rock since 2002.
clover_black - October 20, 2009
don't call me ignorant. You have no idea.
IF we lose on thursday, than what kind of ace is he/????
Big Bad, 'Vlad'! - October 20, 2009
We do have an idea ...
calling Lackey, our Game 7 winner in 2002, a piece of shit is downright LAME.
Downing Rules - October 20, 2009
Super Lame
he has had no run support and pitched well. The D in GM did the opposite of bailing him out and didn’t even make up for it by producing some runs for him
RedAces - October 20, 2009
The point was, . . he is just as good as Kazmir if we lose. O.K. the shit analogy was lame.
Big Bad, 'Vlad'! - October 20, 2009
It's all good, man.
Downing Rules - October 20, 2009
dude, his stuff is better than Kaz's and you dont need to be an advanced scout to grasp that one.
clover_black - October 20, 2009
You know how it is, I am upset and drunk.
Big Bad, 'Vlad'! - October 20, 2009
When and where was he called "shit"
Angel Aviator - October 20, 2009
8:46PM by BBV...he took it back. We're all good. Back off, AA! ;)
Downing Rules - October 20, 2009
Oh...i have an idea alright.
You ask what kind of an ace is he…
Maybe he’s an ace that gets zero run support throught the years? Maybe lackey will put up a CG with 1 run and the angels O will blank on him.
In johns only post season loss this year, he gave up 2 runs, in a losing effort.
Talk shit on the 1 guy who gave you a world series ring and the motherfuckin ace of the staff. Give me a big game, and I want john in it.
clover_black - October 20, 2009
My bad, I agree, I want Big John in the Big game too. PLEASE GOD GIVE HIM SOME RUN SUPPORT@!!!!!
Big Bad, 'Vlad'! - October 20, 2009
Doesnt really matter who pitches if the Angels arent going to play D or hit
going to the mound knowing you have to be perfect in order to give your team a chance is no way to pitch. I would like to see Lackey pump his guys up though instead of being so quick to show them up by throwing his hands in the air when things start to become shaky. Dont ever recall seeing the rest of the team throw their arms up in disgust when he allows a 3 run HR
Angel Aviator - October 20, 2009
Lackey knows this better than we do.
He has been making not so subtle comments to this effect since playoffs last year. I have the feeling that he has seen enough, and is sure to leave.
Stirrups - October 20, 2009
I love lackey.
But, there’s a part of me that wants him to leave and experience the exact same SHIT, except on another team, not realizing how good he had it with the halos.
Of course, he will probably go to the yanks and get a ring. Fuck my life.
clover_black - October 20, 2009
lol!
Downing Rules - October 20, 2009
We will be sitting here watching him get clocked by a hot Figgy playing for CWS.

opiejeanne - October 20, 2009
Not bad that I, as a 52 year old, knows that!
Stirrups - October 20, 2009
Yeah I'm starting to think that too.
but the question is who would he want to sign with other than the Angels?
SenorChuckles - October 20, 2009
lackster looked great in the ALDS..
but really he didnt look any better than Kaz in game 1… granted he got jobbed by the D but he made it worse by erroring himself.
BigBangRobbDawgg - October 20, 2009
If there were no errors he only has like 2 Earned Runs
RedAces - October 20, 2009
Whatever?
We are winning THURSDAY. Lackey will be an ACE and the offense will arise from their SLUMBER.
Downing Rules - October 20, 2009
then he get's paid.
Big Bad, 'Vlad'! - October 20, 2009
Let Us See If Lackey Can Pitch Instead of Throwing a Tantrum
The very first game Lackey pitched, he acted like a baby whining and crying instead of concentrating on striking guys out. He needs to act like an adult and just do what he is being paid to do, being paid big bucks at that, which is pitch and pitch good. If he can do that, the Angels have a chance. If not, then he can start his vacation. He is not going to get those fat contracts for sub-par pitching in the playoffs. All the other teams have already seen his very poor game one performance. He blows this again tomorrow and he is toast in the free agent market!
JimmyBlue - October 20, 2009
I believe he mans up...
AND THE GAME IS NOT TOMORROW (sorry for yelling).
Downing Rules - October 20, 2009
Lackey
In the past I’ve said I don’t think Lackey is one oif the elite pitchers in this league. Obviously he’s the best we got, but to say he pitched bad in game 1? 2ER is doing his job. Its the offense that’s tanked it so far. Except for some key hits we haven’t done anything offensively.
HALO_86 - October 21, 2009 via mobile
It Boils Down to Pitching
When the offense is unable to get the hit, it is a problem with the hitters. I beg to disagree. It is a problem of the pitchers. Pitchers have to shut the other team down which the Yankees have done a very good job on the Angels. If your pitcher can do his job and hold the other team down then, you have a chance to win when they change pitchers down the line. If your pitcher cannot even hold the opposition for a couple of innings like Kazmir in Game 4 for instance or Lackey in Game 1 then, your chances are slim to none of winning. In the post season, the best pitchers will win! Game 3 showed that when the Angels pitchers match the Yankees, we can win! The exception to the rule probably is Vlad as he swings at every pitch practically and the opposing pitchers know to keep throwing bad pitches as he will take a whack at it no matter what so, that makes it easier for the opposing pitchers.
JimmyBlue - October 21, 2009
Are they actually going to do postgame tonight?

ok, so you had swisher called out, but that was not even CLOSE the strike zone KILLED Kazmir.
Downing Rules - October 20, 2009
Really that strike zone cost your team 10 runs?
HappyLuckyGoldenDragonNumber1! - October 20, 2009
He could have
Been in the game much longer and, yes, many runs would have been saved.
Not saying it would have saved the game, however.
TheAntiSox - October 20, 2009
Wow...
I’m starting to think that Yankee fans just love to piss off others and embrace the hate they receive.
SenorChuckles - October 20, 2009
Agree
The strike zone did kill Kazmir. By the time of the Swisher call the DAMAGE HAD BEEN DONE. The tone had been set.
Swisher call was merely in the service of obfuscation

Big Bad, 'Vlad'! - October 20, 2009
Agree "Vlad"
Despite the fact that our offense missed some golden opportunities, we had already been put behind the 8 ball by home plate umpiring.
Jack Frost - October 20, 2009
We played way to shitty to pin this on the Umps.
Some serious butt kicking better be goin’ on in the clubhouse right now cause this was embarassing. Our fault plain and simple.
Match Day 5 - October 20, 2009
way to give the umps a pass, JEEZUS!!! DID YOU SEE THE GAME|????
Big Bad, 'Vlad'! - October 20, 2009
Yeah,
and that play at 3rd got them more fired up than anything else this series. What did they do about it? A few GIDPs and some Ks and some LOBs. Nice job.
Match Day 5 - October 20, 2009
Do you not care about fair and impartial???
If this shit keeps up, we will have another 1919 on our hands.
Big Bad, 'Vlad'! - October 20, 2009
You really believe that that the Umps care who wins?
Or are you saying that they were paid off? Cause if it’s just incompetence that you are upset with, then it’s only our fault.
Match Day 5 - October 20, 2009
No, I am saying whole heartedly, that this game is no longer fair and impartial.
that in fact, the umps( or ump or two) are paid off. Seriously, look at it from a business perspective. Look at how much money the Yanks will make if they make the WS. How little it would cost them to pay the umps in relation to how much they have already paid out in salary etc. The mafia does in fact exist.
Big Bad, 'Vlad'! - October 20, 2009
Have fun doing something other than watching baseball then.
Why bother if the game is fixed?
Match Day 5 - October 20, 2009
Come on except that the Angels got beaten and beaten badly
no umpire is in on a fix………
Angel Aviator - October 20, 2009
That is just stupid talk.
When you see an ump choke and fail to make an obvious call that any Littel Leaguer would understand, it is not because he is getting paid off. It is because he is am intimidated puss who refuses to be the guy to blow the Yankees out of a potential rally in a pivotal game of the League Championship Series.
Stirrups - October 20, 2009
Stupid?? check the NBA, Check The . . . MLB. Learn some history.
Big Bad, 'Vlad'! - October 20, 2009
Hey dumbass...learn some yourself before vomiting up cliches.
The NBA didn’t pay off the refs, Donaghy was on the take from the mob. The FBI and the NBA busted him. And MLB didn’t pay off the White Sox, the White Sox were taking money from the mob. MLB was the organization that exposed and punished them, overly so.
If the umps are on the take, it requires investigation to prove it, not some jackass mistake every 12-year old ballplayer could see. McClelland calls out BOTH Yankees for being too stupid to hold up their end of the bargain on his bribe. AND he earns his bribe by calling Swisher safe on the tag up challenge.
Go ahead and be pissed, but get a grip. Flailing at strawmen is a waste of hard earned energy.
Stirrups - October 20, 2009
Dude, did you actually read my post??
‘The mafia in fact does exist. ’ Right there at the end. So who’s the dumbass now Stirrups??
Big Bad, 'Vlad'! - October 20, 2009
I was reacting to the BIGGEST POINT IN YOUR POST:
“Look at how much money the Yanks will make if they make the WS. How little it would cost them to pay the umps in relation to how much they have already paid out in salary etc”
The subject of those sentences are the Yankees, not the mob. Therefore, the party that you are accusing of paying off the umps would be the Yankees, not the mob. Your latter mob sentence is a mere non sequitur to your actual accusation.
Stirrups - October 20, 2009
Well, I've been drinking, AND i don't think the two are mutually exclusive.
It’s likely that within the NY empire are elements that associate with Mafia, and as such could conspire to create a situation whereby the Yanks have more than a fair shot. Vegas odds and such, bettting and general revenue included in the accumulated windfall gained from a WS appearance.
Big Bad, 'Vlad'! - October 20, 2009
aren't
Big Bad, 'Vlad'! - October 20, 2009
We could have avoided a lot of angst had you:
joined those two subjects at all. Drinking, however, is an inhibiter on proper grammer that I well understand. And, in times of serious pissiness, wholeheartedly endorse.
Stirrups - October 20, 2009

Big Bad, 'Vlad'! - October 20, 2009
i care about RISP hitting...
the angels had NONE… that was the ballgame sir. you’re not gonna win game when you score 1 run… and have a black hole in the leadoff and 5 spot
BigBangRobbDawgg - October 20, 2009
Exactly.
Match Day 5 - October 20, 2009

you can bitch about the umps all you want, but when we had chances early on to get Kazmir run support we failed.

Why cuz ken and joey said so
where you in the dugout?
bruinbrah - October 20, 2009
do you really think the umps had anything to do with them scoring 10 runs...
and the halos only scoring 1… drink another… thats what im doing
BigBangRobbDawgg - October 20, 2009
me too.
Big Bad, 'Vlad'! - October 20, 2009
agreed
while every year we get killed by crazy calls. the offense has to show up. that is the only way to get past it.
HalolessHaloFan - October 20, 2009
Pitching Is About Holding the Other Team Down
The Yankee pitchers pretty much did their jobs which is hold the Angels hitters down. if the Angels looked bad, it is because of the Yankee Pitchers. Our pitchers on the other hand, Lackey, Fuentes, Kazmir pretty much let the team down. If they held the Yankees down, we would have had a chance to win like last Monday. Vlad probably cost us plenty too because he did not have plate discipline and took a swing at practically every single pitch! Kazmir pretty much guaranteed a Yankee win with the way he pitched last night!
JimmyBlue - October 21, 2009
The Umpire should donate their pay check to charity
With that said that wasn’t the reason why the Angels got out played and out hustled all evening long.
Angel Aviator - October 20, 2009
they don't need it, what with their 'gifts' from the yankees.

You put Frankie in that pen and we wrapped up the sweep tonight! ;)
Downing Rules - October 20, 2009
LOL!!!
Big Bad, 'Vlad'! - October 20, 2009
that sucked
Kazmir didn’t look smooth tonight but damn that strike zone by the ump was horrible. Almost 2 different zones for the Yanks and Angels. I’m still keeping the faithm 1 game at a time. We can do it. The hitters have to obviously wake up and get going and give the pitchers something to work with.
HALO_86 - October 20, 2009 via mobile
Awful write up
The umps didn’t help, but we are playing a powerful team that has more offensive weapons than we do. We are pressing and playing like NY is Boston. We have made errors that were uncharacteristic of the team we loved all year. To whine about Fox or the umps is childish. The Angels are beating themselves.
I think we win tomorrow. After that, who knows….

Way to show up in the playoffs Juan Rivera.
.167 in the playoffs from a number 5 hitter is pretty awful.
deejayelleseven - October 20, 2009
well
he is only slightly slumping compared to the .215 he hit the last month and a half of the season.
the way they were swinging the bat coming into the playoffs, neither hunter nor rivera should have sniffed the meat of the order.
at least tori got a big hit in game 1, that was a long time ago considering the bad baserunning, his errors, calling out fuentes, and doing jack shit in the 3 hole
Quinlan's Goofy Swing - October 20, 2009

he did pretty damn decent when Torii was out
so it wont hurt Rivera looks lost
Angels_48 - October 20, 2009
So, he's going to get a rhythm in a last-ditch start tomorrow?
Uh, no. Is Burnett a fastball first pitcher, if so, then start GMJ. However, I’d rather see Quinlan before GMJ.
I think both of us are smoking crack. You have to stick with you top guns. They have to relax and play and quit pressing. Keep the lineup intact Scioscia. They will come through.
MOJO SUGGESTION: Have Adam Kennedy throw out the first pitch Thursday.

Downing Rules - October 20, 2009
I BLAME SCIOSCIA
For not making any moves, other than benching Mathis, using Bulger on back to back days, lifting Santana for no reason, keeping figgy in the leadoff spot, batting rivera 5th (worst hitter for the last 2 months) … make some moves, there is no time for cliches and figuring things out next week.
Rivera is hitting worse than Kendrick was hitting when he got sent to Salt lake, and this guy gets to bat 5th ? he starts every game of the series, while you have benched kendrick twice already when he had the highest ops on the team in the 2nd half of the season?
MAKE SOME MOVES! PUNCH AN UNDER PERFORMING PLAYER! LET FUENTES CALL OUT TORI HUNTER FOR SUCKING!
Quinlan's Goofy Swing - October 20, 2009

Downing Rules - October 20, 2009
Jeez, own up and suck it up
You got beat, your pitchers threw too many balls, and your fielders/bats fell asleep after the 6th. The bad calls had zero impact on the final score. Yankee fans have more to complain about; we actually had a run taken off the board.
Again, class is in short supply here…
ProfessorBigelow - October 20, 2009

Big Bad, 'Vlad'! - October 20, 2009
Shut your pie hole little boy
previous remarks about you are accurate …reconize that ARod is one of the better players to ever suit up
Angel Aviator - October 20, 2009
You don't know me.
He IS one of the better players to stick needles in his ass, and lie, and cheat. Your right about that.
Big Bad, 'Vlad'! - October 20, 2009
Yea A-rod is a great homerun hitter
he is also a cheater and completely crazy. Since we are in the vein of stating facts
UCIHalo - October 20, 2009
He wears lipstick, too.
Downing Rules - October 20, 2009

Big Bad, 'Vlad'! - October 20, 2009

RedAces - October 20, 2009
A-Rod is not clean
I don’t know what gave you that impression but he is still using. They don’t test for HGH.
NewportHalo - October 20, 2009
how do you know that?
exactly. You don’t. Nobody knows what anybody is using, and nobody every will know unless they start testing for him.
You Angels fans love to bash A-Rod, don’t you? I know you are upset that he absolutely owns you guys, but honest to god, give the guy a break. You knock him for something he did 6 years ago, and then accuse him of using other substances?
He’s just as good without steroids. 2007 should have taught you that. The Angels were one of the top teams that wanted to sign him after that year before he resigned with the Yankees, and I bet you guys would love to have a talent like that on your team.
nyyrocks29 - October 22, 2009
AGREED REV
BUT WE COULDN’T HIT A BALL OF A TEE IF WE HAD RUNNERS IN SCORING POSITION TONIGHT.
Dono Romantico - October 20, 2009
sad day to be an angel fan, either we are in for a historic comeback, or another sad year. I am hoping its the former.
However, the later is going to happen if we dont get SOMETHING from Juan and Figgy. Today was the first game of the series we didnt do something fundamentally stupid. But with Kazmir bringing nothing to the table, we were put in a big whole.
Also WTF is up with scoscia lineup. we need need to move juan into a spot where he doesnt come up in clutch situations (Ie. the 7th spot BEHIND K-mo and izzy/hk)
All that said, if we can make those changes, I have no doubt we can get this series to a game 7, and we all know anything can happen in a game 7!
robi s - October 20, 2009
You know seriously
You had one of the best pitchers in baseball just throw an impeccable game on short rest. The Yankees lineup just clicked tonight. Yet a lot of you guys really want to blame the umps and a conspiracy? Guys even if the umps “GAVE” the Yankees 5 runs, you still would have lost 5 – 1. You guys didn’t lose 4-3. It was 10 friggin – 1
HappyLuckyGoldenDragonNumber1! - October 20, 2009
To your point, the "10" doesn't mean shit. The "1" means everything.
Stirrups - October 20, 2009
yeah the umpires didn't win it for the yankees
the angels once again lost it, by not hitting the ball. emotionally the umps might have taken the angels out of it, but yeah know what, that isn’t worth squat. This whole series, maybe except game 3 they couldn’t hit the ball and couldn’t field. Up until yesterday the Angels pitching was fantastic.
Halos in DE - October 21, 2009
look jerk off
Had the calls been made, the strikes been called, we don’t know how it would have turned out. So, much like your city, your argument is shit.
bruinbrah - October 20, 2009
Speaking of seriously
You come on an Angels fan site and tell them what to think after a loss. What did you expect they would say to you? You’re trolling.
less cowbell, more 'neau - October 20, 2009
Yep...
if I were to ever troll. EVER. It would only be after a bad loss, like tonight to congratulate the other team. However, I don’t troll, so I wont.
Downing Rules - October 20, 2009

UCIHalo - October 20, 2009
ROFLCOPTER!
SenorChuckles - October 20, 2009
I agree, CC threw a great game...
but, I can show you at least 10 balls for Kazmir that were strikes for CC. At least.
Downing Rules - October 20, 2009
Get out of here
You’re dripping hair gel everywhere.
Match Day 5 - October 20, 2009
Umps made so terrible calls
but it resulted in zero runs. It wasn’t the umps fault.
GMan83201 - October 20, 2009
yeap
they couldnt score off CC anyway
but never the less, they were still terrible…
shaqfor3 - October 20, 2009
Cascade Effect.
What does the game look like if CC is dealing with situational pressure every inning in a 1-1 game, because our starter can remain in the game with his well-earned effectiveness?
And what does the game look like with the score within reach, and the Halos being among the finest teams in history at manufacturing runs?
We shall never know. instead, we will wear “10-1” with ignomy. So allow us some frsutration.
Stirrups - October 20, 2009
Frustration allowed
I’ll never someone how to take a loss.
GMan83201 - October 20, 2009
Sorry
never “tell” someone how to take a loss.
GMan83201 - October 20, 2009
If it doesn't hurt, you didn't give a shit in the first place.
Stirrups - October 20, 2009
Agreed
Your team ripped my heart out last night.
GMan83201 - October 20, 2009
umps calls
Granted the calls didn’t result in runs it’s all about momentum of the game. Those out would have been 3rd outs. Sometimes it’s all about the momentum of the game.
I’m not saying we played great and the umps are to blame for the whole game. But there have been some REALLY bad calls in this series.
And you know it’s not just the Angels complaining when every single internet sports page has the play at 3rd on their front page. No matter what you cannot have 2 player occupy the same base. NO ONE was on the base. They were both out.
Now, it’s not over yet!!!! We can still get through this. I’m not giving up – It’s NOT over.
angelsfan777 - October 21, 2009
A-Roid is still a fraud
And CC is still fat.

Let the )anks clinch on our field. I’m still expecting to win but damn I don’t want to see that if that’s the case. I’m soo disappointed in the offense. Kaz want good. Damn the offernse has struggled all series. They haven’t showed except in a spot here and there. 3 and 5 hitters stinkin it up. 1 and 2 what more can I say. I’m just venting. They better show up thursday. 1 game at a time. Let’s do it.

The Halos really have to wake up and hit better. Not facing Sabathia will hopefully be just what the doctor ordered.

I’ve been a sports fanatic my entire life. I’ve always associated with others life myself.
I can say this with certainty…
You are the sorest of losers. Wow. You lost 10-1.. not 3-1 or 2-1. There are no excuses here.
cmkelly29 - October 20, 2009
You don't come here very often do you?
;)
Downing Rules - October 20, 2009
Thank You.
Wait unt il Sunday Night when we win, because I am a hell of a sore fucking WINNER too.
Rev Halofan - October 20, 2009
Hey thats cool with me...
If you win, live it up man.
However, I wouldn’t be thrilled with you if I were a regular here. You’re speaking for a decent portion of your fanbase, and you’re making them all look like very sore losers. Most of us know it’s only you though.
cmkelly29 - October 20, 2009
FWIW, Rev has built a site that is ripping 3000 to 6000 posts per game.
Most sites would be happy with that traffic IN A YEAR.
Rev is but one personality here, and most of the rest of us are adults who can think for ourselves. We allow him his opinion, and he allows us ours. Anybody who works their ass of our roster has worked hard enough at being a dick to earn it, and the 1000’s of us who remain appreciate his running interference.
Stirrups - October 20, 2009
You realize he's representing you too, right?
I’m not going to say I believe that, but a LOT of people do.
You would have a fantastic community if Rev was merely a bit-part and not the lead role. He’s a terrible blogger. I’m sorry, but it’s true.
I have 0 opinion on any of the other bloggers on SBN EXCEPT for Rev. Everyone else is just a blogger. Rev is a terrible blogger.
cmkelly29 - October 20, 2009
I am fine with Rev representing.
I have been here often enough over the years to pick up bits and pieces of the unbelievable garbage that comes our way, which Rev deals with so that I don’t have to. Criminal behavior, as a matter of fact.
As I have written elsewhere, Rev is an acquired taste. If you don’t stick around long enough to get it, well, it happens.
Stirrups - October 20, 2009
I'm fine with Rev representing, also.
This blog is far better than any of the other Angels sites, and I’ve visited quite a few.
opiejeanne - October 20, 2009
Revs ma boi!
yo…
SenorChuckles - October 21, 2009
yeah I'm kind of embarrassed to be a registered commenter on this site
We just got our asses beat and the guy who runs the site is complaining about the Umps? Really? When Swisher got screwed on the tag up? The umps were bad both ways. Deal with it.
NewportHalo - October 20, 2009
swisher was out
Quinlan's Goofy Swing - October 20, 2009
It was bad
but had they gotten the call right on Swisher at 2nd they wouldnt have had a chance to screw that one up as well. With that said the umpires did not cause the Angel hitters to be 0’fers
Angel Aviator - October 20, 2009
Your right, a squeezed strike zone doesn't matter.
Not.
Big Bad, 'Vlad'! - October 20, 2009
Even if the umps exanded the zone for Kazmir
he was bouncing a lot of pitches to the plate and hanging others. He just didn’t have it.
GMan83201 - October 20, 2009
Yah, he pretty much was mediocre at best.
Big Bad, 'Vlad'! - October 20, 2009
After 2005, I can't look at an umpire with respect ever.
So, while Rev’s post is out of line, I FEEL HIS BITTERNESS.
Downing Rules - October 20, 2009
Oh they were shit ....but the Angels managed to cover up their smell with their own foul odor
Angel Aviator - October 20, 2009
yes the umps have been shitty this postseason
one of them is randy marsh
he was squeezing pitchers on both sides of strikes
shaqfor3 - October 20, 2009

This makes the fan base look bad and perpetuates the stereo type that West Coast fans are not knowledgeable

We’re non-existant. We leave the games early. They already have those stereotypes. I will be there at game 6 to counter all that bullshit. I’ll blow my lungs out and blow out my thunderstix from overuse within 1 inning. I’m going OFF (non-alcohol fueled).

Angel Aviator - October 20, 2009
I agree
But I dont think they helped either, but thats not really their job I guess
linkbruin - October 20, 2009
I will say that we all learned long ago
while playing pickle that if your not touching the base and your tagged …….you out all those not touching the bag are out. What a shit call but then again if your screened out like the umpire was by Jorge P then you miss it…
Angel Aviator - October 20, 2009
Hitting was horrendous.
and Clutch was exactly right… the hitters were hacking against CC and I am not sure why. Does he have an early count meatball that he throws? It had to be something like that as ONLY ABREU worked the count. Everyone else was hacking in under 3 pitches and in not entirely pitcher’s counts.
Downing Rules - October 20, 2009
Its called pressing
Scared to work the count and fall behind to a guy that is a CY Young winner with ++stuff. Some pressing also…trying to make something happen and not letting the game come to them
Angel Aviator - October 20, 2009
Well, bad timing for that argument...
Bring it some other time or make a fapost on your own team’s web site. That’s how you do this if you want to make a change.
We are in the middle of making shit stew and you come over and try to stir. Not good timing. That’s all I’m trying to say.

I was an English major for a couple of years before I threw it all away to major in Music.
opiejeanne - October 20, 2009
major in music?
what type of music classes did you take?
SenorChuckles - October 21, 2009
Two years of Theory,
one year of History (brutal teacher, but my favorite), a year of Instruments, Vocal Performance, Composition, Conducting, History of Jazz, and I performed in Concert Band, Marching Band, Orchestra, and Choir. My recital was on the piano but I also played clarinet.
I also worked in the theater dept when they did musicals, and was the musical director for two years. In my senior year they asked me to direct the Children’s Musical which is a Huge Deal and involves writing a lot of original music as well as orchestrating it, and I had to turn it down because the school screwed up and lost some of my credits for Instruments so I was carrying 18 units, and I was married and had a 6-year-old, and I was tutoring the Education Majors for $2 an hour because they were required to take a basic music class and some of them were struggling. One of my students introduced me to his girlfriend, an architecture major. When I told them that that was my other choice, he told me I couldn’t have done that because “you have to be smart to major in Architecture”. I asked him how his scales were coming.
opiejeanne - October 22, 2009
Hah, wow what an asshole.
Thats a lot of classes. I was thinking of taking a jazz class and continue taking music appreciation. I want to take more, but I just don’t know which other ones to take.

Stirrups - October 20, 2009
kazmir got fucked by the ump
because napoli was blocking his view
at least that’s what the ump is saying.
this falls on scioscia, since it was widely reported that umpires prefer mathis over napoli, and if anyone is going to need help from the umpire, it’s kazmir and his fragile bitch made ego and arm
Quinlan's Goofy Swing - October 20, 2009

Downing Rules - October 20, 2009
???????
Where are you getting these quotes form the ump?
Stirrups - October 20, 2009
That was "sounds of the game"
right on Fox. Soth went up and talked to the ump and he said on National TV: “I can’t see because of Napoli’s glove.”
Downing Rules - October 20, 2009
The replay of the whole thing is in the "highlights of the game" on mlb.com
Wonder if Soth would have been better off taking Napoli out right there, or at least after the horrendous half-right double play non-call at third base. I know I would have been unable to play on top of my game with all that shit flung through my catcher’s mask.
AlanFalcon - October 20, 2009
Why the hell wouldn't Sosh take Naps aside immediately and correct the matter?
And why the hell wouldn’t Sosh bark at the ump to tell Naps as much directly? If the catcher is repventing the plate ump from doing his job, where is it written that the ump defaults to calling everything a ball?
Stirrups - October 20, 2009

I simply CANNOT believe that the ump gets to blame the catcher for his own poor mechanics. It is the ump’s fucking responsibility to get his own ass into position to make the call, AND NOT IMPEDE THE PLAYERS TRYING TO PLAY THE FUCKING GAME THAT HE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR JUDGING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Good Fucking Methusela!
If ever there was a reason for protesting a game, this is one that should be in the rule book. “No umpire shall not mandate that position players perform their duties in accordance with the viewing convenience of the umpires.”

Been going on for years Stirrups
and as you saw Mike went out to ask about this and find out if that was the case…..even asked what Naps could do to help the ump out. Its been going on and on for years …former catcher playing D1 I speak from experiences
Angel Aviator - October 20, 2009

time he takes the passive approach. “Uh, excuse me ump, sir. May I beg to differ?”
Where the fuck is an Earl Weaver when you need one?

and a 3 run homer
Angel Aviator - October 20, 2009
We managed well without 3 run homers back in August.
Stirrups - October 20, 2009
yeah and that was not against the likes of CC
you know very well that the shit in August amounts to nothing. They didnt face a pitcher the caliber of CC 2 times in 4 games. You don’t face the 4/5 starter of a club in the playoffs often…just the top 3
Angel Aviator - October 20, 2009
Actually, it started in July against these very Yankees.
Including Sabathia on July 12. And they roasted Minnesota pitching thoroughly in two series.
Stirrups - October 20, 2009
Using the season as a barometer
is often a recipe for disaster ……if we have learned anything from all our (my) years in this game is you deal with what you have in front of you not the past …great info but matters not unless the players execute…The Angels have executed themselves often
Angel Aviator - October 20, 2009
Hey anyone got Palmers # or email
I am looking for some BP tomorrow he throws cookies
Angel Aviator - October 20, 2009
Not arguing your point.
Just stating that these same guys have already proven what is possible. That they fail to find that possibility now is the real story, as you suggest.
Stirrups - October 20, 2009
Having been
an advance scout and having watched players for years there is always info that helps but then your team has to go out and make those pitches. A guy I suggest how to get out today may not be the same guy you pitch to a few months later…..lots of advanced scouting prior to playoffs with scouts following clubs for weeks…Juan is an out in Sept, relay how and why,,,
Angel Aviator - October 20, 2009
Concede the point. But it is not one-sided.
Halos have advanced scouts too. Adjustments are to be made all around.
Stirrups - October 20, 2009
Exactly
They have them and they do a very good job, but as I stated your players have to go and execute the reports ..That hasn’t been done
Angel Aviator - October 20, 2009
I thought there should have been a protest on the 2U DP at 3rd base...
that right there was the single-worst umpiring event I have ever witnessed. PATHETIC.
Downing Rules - October 20, 2009
Protest can only be made on Rule interpretations
this was in the umps judgment (bad)
Angel Aviator - October 20, 2009
Thanks, AA.
Downing Rules - October 20, 2009
No worrie Downing
I am sure that once he (umpire) saw the film footage he was pissed……one of the best umps in the game ..voted on by the players for many years…..he just got screened out by Jorge .watch you will see he had no idea of Cano being on or off the bag
Angel Aviator - October 20, 2009
Same mistake he made with Swisher.
Not keeping an eye on the bag and the ball. bad mechanics again. Dude has lost whatever it was he had.
Stirrups - October 20, 2009
Umpire Mechanics
Get inline with the catch and the runner .he did that . Problem was he didnt get deep enough and Swisher makes the move before catch with one foot while the back one is still on the bag….he went on movement …follow me?
Angel Aviator - October 20, 2009
Totally. Which is why I said bad mechanics.
It is not enough to get in line. You must also get deep enough to have your eye on the catch AND the bag in your peripheral vision. McClellan only did half of his job there.
Stirrups - October 20, 2009
I thought he was NOT in line with the ball and the runner...
it appeared as if he was about 1.5 paces toward left field
Downing Rules - October 20, 2009
Not the video I just reviewed.
Posted around here somewhere. He was practically on top of 3B, just off the line in foul ground.
Stirrups - October 20, 2009
The times I have umpired (little league)...
I always move quickly to get into a position of an anticipated play. McClelland hardly moved on the Swisher tag up and also was just staring straight at Naps during that double tag. He appeared to be stoned. I’d be moving around to see if something is going to happen – keep the ball in view.
Downing Rules - October 20, 2009
When you see it he is screened out
he is looking at the jersey #20 of Jorge cant see Cano at all
Angel Aviator - October 20, 2009
Right...but why not a quick move away from the stands to see if a tag is being applied?
Downing Rules - October 20, 2009
Oh I agree
as you know though from your LL Umpiring days when its bad baseball its hard to be in position for a call..not excusing him just stating how things get fckd up at times…..with that said ITS A SHIT CALL!

but the angels were worse. i don’t know who i hate more after this travesty. the yankees are easy to hate because they can buy most of their talent, but the angles did nothing offensively yet again.
let us all remember who we should really hate, and that’s joe buck and tim mccarver, who would not STFU about CC on 3 days’ rest like he’s not the PERFECT 3-day starter in the entire professional sport.

Fuck this. And fuck this team for tonight.
I was (un?)fortunately stuck studying tonight and didn’t get a chance to watch the game, except a few innings on gameday and the first inning Teix at bat where Kaz got screwed on the check-swing strikeout and then had to go through 4 more pitches.
But you know what? The supposed Yankee-killer Scott Kazmir has NO BUSINESS giving up 5 runs to them. NONE.
I learned all I needed to know about this game in the third inning, when I saw that while Kazmir had already thrown the ball 53 times, CC had throw it 19.
That tells me all I need to know about how the team approached this game.
When you’re approaching a guy on 3-days’s rest, dominant or not, you should NOT BE SWINGING AT THE FIRST. DAMN. PITCH. As Aybar did. As Morales did. As Figgins did. I’m sure there were more that I didn’t see. YOU SHOULD BE WEARING THE GUY DOWN AND GETTING HIS PITCH COUNT AS HIGH AS POSSIBLE. As Abreu attempted to do.
Seriously, what the fuck was this team thinking tonight? Way to ride the momentum, guys. Umps or not.
I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I’m actually looking forward to seeing Mathis back in the line-up on Thursday. If that even does any good.
Clutch - October 20, 2009
Augh damn, *thrown* the balll.
Clutch - October 20, 2009
How can you wear a guy down when he's constantly getting you into 0-2 counts?
Doesn’t compute, Clutch. The umps were calling the low strike for CC and not for Kazmir. That contributed to a more efficient pitch count for Sabathia and led to a much more rapidly increasing pitch count for Kazmir.
Downing Rules - October 20, 2009
How can you be in an 0-2 count if you keep grounding out on the first pitch?
That also doesn’t compute.
Clutch - October 20, 2009
Also
The guy is not going to throw 18 straight strikes.
Ergo, even if you took every single pitch for the first three innings, you’re probably going to have CC up to 30-35 pitches by the end of the third.
Which does you a hell of a lot better than the 17 they had him at at the end of 3 today.
Clutch - October 20, 2009
Your right and Abreu just said as much in locker room interview
Angel Aviator - October 20, 2009

Abreu 4 pitches 4-0
Hunter 3 pitches 1-1
Guerrero 3 pitches 1-1

Rivera 4 pitches 1-2 (was 0-2)
Kendricks 2 pitches 0-1
Morales 1 pitch 0-0
3rd
Aybar 1 pitch 0-0
Figgins 3 pitches 1-1
Abreu 6 pitches K 2-2 (was 2-0)
Wow, you are right. With the exception of Bobby Abreu, they were WAY too agressive.
Downing Rules - October 20, 2009

I figured this out by playing a freaking computer game (MVP Baseball 2005). These guys play baseball for a living—and they can’t figure this out?
Clutch - October 20, 2009
MVP Baseball 05 was such a great video game.
I wish EA Sports would bring it back.
deejayelleseven - October 21, 2009 via mobile

Bunch of hocus pocus built on top of misleading statistics.
clover_black - October 20, 2009
Humpires
why even play the game if the umps aren’t going to be fair and balanced? granted cc had our boys under his thumb tonite, but kazmir was not getting any of the calls on the corners, then we had the pick off at second that was called safe and the double play by napoli at third that became the humpires version of a fielders choice. 9 against 9 is tough enough versus these guys, but 15 against 9 is an unfair fight. this crew makes joe west’s team look like all stars

Downing Rules - October 20, 2009

Big Bad, 'Vlad'! - October 20, 2009
Pitching Continues to Fail!
What is readily apparent is the Angels lack of consistent pitching performance. The starters pretty much have the jitters in the playoffs. That is why they continue to under perform in the playoffs. Angels need a thorough house cleaning after this season. What is worst is they spent a huge sum on Kazmir which is certainly a very bad decision. That huge salary will lock the Angels from making major moves.
JimmyBlue - October 20, 2009
thorough house cleaning
umm you do know 4 of our guys are free agents next year right?
princeton11loveshalos - October 20, 2009
Get your heads out of your damn asses and PLAY THE DAMN GAME, GUYS!
Umps shouldn’t even be a factor. I don’t care if it’s Cy Freaking Young out there, and if the umps are giving him almost everything—you show a modicum of patience, show some selectivity, and get him out of the game before the 8th fucking inning.
Clutch - October 20, 2009

Clutch - October 20, 2009

Big Bad, 'Vlad'! - October 20, 2009
Umpires
See….This is one of the things that is wrong with this world. It’s always someone else’s fault. It can’t be that the Angels just couldn’t hit CC……It’s the umpires and a Major League conspiracy to deprive the little guy of his just due. The umps sucked and that was a terrible call at third base, but I didn’t hear you mention the fact that Swisher was clearly on the base when Hunter caught the ball.
Come on…….Get over the fact that the Yankees are just better than the Angels. A-Rod has been unbelievable and the Angels….Well they have been terrible.
Is it true that the Rally Monkey hung himself with his own tail in the 8th inning? Wow….Don’t blame him!

AlanFalcon - October 20, 2009
I still believe this team can do it and hand the Yankee's heads to them on a platter.
But this team has GOT to GET ITSELF TOGETHER. Hopefully having their backs completely against the wall lights a fire under their asses and gets it done. They should have so much fucking momentum by the time we get to Game 7 that CC doesn’t know what hits him.

I’d have to dig around to find it. I ran across it about 5 years ago and it was just a “hmmm” moment.
My family (make that families) have been here since the 1600s, so it’s not too surprising that I’m related to someone who did something of note, but the opposite is also true and I’m related to people who were a bit infamous.

Rev. has very eloquently expressed a truth about tonights game
as well as about professional sports in general (without actually stating the generalization).
Unfortunately we live in “A World Gone Wrong” where individual integrity and morality is a thing of the past. That fact that a handful of umpires would be less than professional in the execution of their duties is not surprising, but merely symptomatic of a larger cultural phenomenon.
Although each poster here is certainly entitled to his or her opinion/s it would behoove you to have carefully considered the comments he is making before writing him off as a whack job or insulting him by comparing him to a clubbed seal.

Rev...
This team was outplayed in every facet of the game tonight. As bad as the umpiring has been – and it has been bad – this team need only look in the mirror to find the reason for tonight and game 1. This team is getting beat up and down the field.
To blame the umps is foolish.
jimmuscomp - October 20, 2009
To not recognize and call out the umps for their terrible officiating is equally foolish

fischean - October 20, 2009
agreed
Vlad Dracul - October 20, 2009
Yeah, I can pretty much agree with that.
The umps HAVE lost us some games in the past (see: Nick Green at bat in September, other things that game aside). But if this team expects to win anything, it has GOT to pound the ball and score some freaking runs, regardless of whether or not they’re getting squeezed. So the pitching craps the bed in one game and the other team scores seven runs? So what—Score eight! That’s what a good team does—it gets its cylinders clicking and picks up the slack when some misfire. They don’t all consistently misfire at once!
Clutch - October 20, 2009
Thanks for being reasonable. :)
The way things were going around here, I was a little nervous posting that.
fischean - October 20, 2009
I'm glad you did thank you
deejayelleseven - October 21, 2009 via mobile
I am not saying the umpiring wasn't terrible.
I said as much. My point is that six Helen Keller’s could have called this game and it wouldn’t have mattered. The umps didn’t lose this game for the Halos.
Kazmir was scared to death to throw a strike tonight, and his inability to get ahead was his demise.
Similarly, CC was hittable tonight. The Halos hit a handful of balls really hard in the first few innings, but they were hit right at folks. Figgy leading off the game, a grounder to ARod a bit later, a liner to RF by Abreu, I think. CC wasn’t as dominating tonight. A few breaks and the Halos score 4 or 5 runs. Still not enough if they give up 10.
Also, the 6th inning was the perfect microcosm of this season and this offense for about 5 years now. First and second, no one out, and Rivera hits into a DP. That happens a lot with the Halos…just bad timing and an inability to hit for power when needed.
The Angels offense – for all the talk of plate discipline – is devoid of fire power and tonight they couldn’t get anyone out.
This was a terrible game, and I am thankful that it was a blowout because if it was 2-1 or 3-1 and the Halos lost the umps would have tainted a game. But, the Halos played so poorly (and the Yanks hit very well tonight, too) that a run here or there wouldn’t matter – the Halos didn’t deserve this game in any way…
jimmuscomp - October 20, 2009
For the record, tonight we DID have 6 Helen Kellers calling the game.
And, to prove your point, that Halos did lose 10-1 anyway.
Stirrups - October 21, 2009
my thing is in the 6th
down by 4 if my memory serves me correctly.
Why not bring in Reggie Willits or hell even GMJ to bunt the lead runner over thus avoiding the DP,while also increasing your chance for at least 1 run making it 2-5 instead of 1-5.
deejayelleseven - October 21, 2009 via mobile
Hoping for a big hit leading to a big inning.
Rivera has had those big hits in the past, and CC looked as shaky as he had been all game, or even all series. Didn’t feel like the time to settle for one run or two if they get lucky. And it didn’t work out, not at all.
AlanFalcon - October 21, 2009
bunting is generally a bad idea.
This team already gives away too many outs. We don’t need to bunt runners over when we are down by 4 runs. Shoot, four runs might as well be 10 runs right now. This team is cold at the wrong time – and CC is throwing well. You don’t see the crumby pitchers in the postseason – generally only the good ones. Except for Vincente Padilla and Kuroda.

This is my 33rd. There were a lot of years I didn't feel like shit.
Mostly in the 70’s, because it was clear going in that there was no reason to believe in an October. But that didn’t deter my Aprils through Septembers at all.
Stirrups - October 21, 2009
Sort of my point as well
Learned long ago if you don’t have a high expectation in others you wont be easily disappointed ……..never had high expectations until 1978 when they went out and tried to buy the best team…only to lose Lyman late in the season to a terrible death ……as I said been an Angel supporter a long time
Angel Aviator - October 21, 2009
Admittedly, I am selective.
If the team is obviously crap (what others might call “rebuilding”), I take the ben Franklin approach of pessimism. That way I will not be disappointed.
But if the team IS competitive that year, I joyfully jump to optimism, knowing full well the odds of a painful conclusion somewhere down the road. The price of great joy being the chance of great despair.
Stirrups - October 21, 2009
really disappointed in tonight's game
I want to think that we can come back from this but the team is just not playing well.
Yet, AJ on the road doesn’t scare me much nor would Petite at home in Game 6. How we get past CC and Rivera in a Game 7, I don’t know.

1, maybe 2 pitches IIRC.
Stirrups - October 20, 2009
It was an inexcusable mistake, but...
it had no bearing on the game. None.
The Yanks could bitch about the Swisher tag-up if they wanted…
But, point taken – the umps are sucking big time.
jimmuscomp - October 21, 2009
Whatever
This game sucked in every conceivable way, but I’m over it. All the air went out of my tires on Saturday night. The Angels couldn’t afford to carelessly let a game they should have won get away from them like they did in Game 2, and this is why. The Yankees are good. So instead of being even at 2-2 after tonight’s spanking, the Angels are down 3-1. Call me a quitter, but I already drank away my grief over the weekend. Better luck next year, I guess.
Suboptimal - October 20, 2009
yeah saturday was a back breaker
it confirmed that the angels were not ready for it.
the team needs to acquire some real power pitching to supplement the other stuff.

lololol - October 20, 2009
That looks to me like the umpire behind the plate did a good job.
Pretty consistent not calling the high-and-away pitch, but consistent is good.
WiHaloFan - October 20, 2009
Looks like the ump called a good game
and the terrible calls on the paths led to zero runs. I think the Yanks won and that’s that, the only “blame” is on the players on the field: CC for pitching a gem and Angels pitchers for struggling.
GMan83201 - October 20, 2009
I could see your charts, and raise them with MLB Gameday zones graphs.
Gameday shows neither pitcher getting calls on the borders (at least early on). And logic would dictate that the fact that Sosh and Dale chat about Dale’s inability to see the zone (and blaming it on Naps) also would indicate that there was a problem with ump accuracy at least on the lower border.
This would lead me to believe that something is amiss with the data you sourced. I cannot accept the accuracy of this chart if it fails to comply with other views of he same data, nor complies with the admissions of the ump himself.
And, obviously, this chart renders the Gameday graphs questionable for the same reason. Both graphics need to present the same data consistently.
Stirrups - October 21, 2009
Very good points Stirrups
I am not personally familiar with “Brooksbaseball.net” and therefore cannot vouch for the accuracy or inaccuracy of these charts. But simply because someone throws a couple of charts up on this thread doesn’t mean they are valid and it certainly doesn’t disprove the assertion that the poor umpiring adversely affected the Angels.
I know that in the first two to three innings in particular I saw at least four to five head shaking ball calls for Kazmir. It did also appear that CC was getting a noticeably wider zone.
Jack Frost - October 21, 2009
I saw that too...
and I think the ump didn’t give corner/cusp strike zone pitches to Kaz simply because of his erratic location. If he doesn’t throw a bunch of pitches in the dirt, I think the ump would give him those strikes. Instead, he was all over the place, so the zone tightened up. Not fair, but it is what it is.
Downing Rules - October 21, 2009
Go to MLB. Watch Gameday for ARod's at bat in inning 2, where ARod walks.
Kaz was consistent. Consistently on the borders. And just as consistently not getting the calls. So what is Kaz to do the next time ARod comes to bat?
Stirrups - October 21, 2009
So this strikezone cause Rivera to ground into a double play... on a 2-1 count? Seriously?

There was some horrible umpiring tonight, but nothing was going to make up for nine runs.
Anyway, we appear to be dead. I can’t imagine these guys mustering up enough care to even want to fly back to New York for a game six.
If Scioscia had any balls, he would have Izzy playing third and Gary Matthews in left field come Thursday. Figgins and Rivera are awful…..so, so awful.

bc56274 - October 20, 2009
we won a game so we had to be winning at least one inning
Angel Aviator - October 20, 2009
We walked off with 2 outs.
So technically, we led for 1/3 of an inning. Or something like that.
moosemastr - October 20, 2009
We weren't leading at that point, we had won.
This entire series, we’ve never held the lead for a full inning.
bc56274 - October 20, 2009
FYI Yes when you win you are in the lead
Angel Aviator - October 20, 2009
and the inning "ends"
however, I see bc’s point. The Yanks are being agressive and taking advantage. The Halos have to put some runs on the board before the Yankees do.
Downing Rules - October 20, 2009
So the Yankees are leading in the game right now? Wrong, they won.
bc56274 - October 20, 2009
They won the inning as well
I get what your saying ,,,,,point is they have not had a lead and held that lead ,,,,,,every time they get it the Skanks tie it or go ahead,,,,,,,,
Angel Aviator - October 20, 2009
bc
is correct. leading an entire inning is when you have the lead in the beginnig of the inning (going in) and leading concluding the 3rd out.

Big Bad, 'Vlad'! - October 20, 2009
This is exactly the type of situation that creates that Halos magic
Would 2002 have been as great without going down 1-0 in each series? Without everyone writing us off, first to the Yankees themselves, then to the Twins, then to the Giants? Would it have been as great if we’d steamrolled past the Giants? If there’d been no Game 6 drama? If we hadn’t had to win on Adam Kennedy’s 3-bombs in the ALCS? If we hadn’t had to rely on Garret Anderson’s clutch double?
The answer, I know, is no. It wouldn’t have been.
This is why we’re here. This is what this team, and this franchise, especially now, does. It makes magic. It will get itself together and IT WILL NOT DISAPPOINT. For there is no other way.
The time has come. The time is now.
2004? 2005? 2007? 2008?
No. Nay.
THIS TEAM IS DIFFERENT. THIS TEAM IS NOW.

DM_RMBRS '95 - October 20, 2009
the only problem is..
self-realization.
nobody was talking about how good it would feel in 2002..it just happened…and it WAS magic.
now, talking about that magic, instantly kills that magic..holy shit what am i talking about …
clover_black - October 20, 2009
Look over here at this red light....
…. A GIANT METEOR STORM! Crazy stuff, but don’t worry folks, we’ll take care of everything from here. Just move along.
AlanFalcon - October 20, 2009
Just trying to get us excited--WE GOTTA HAVE FAITH!
We already saw SOME MAGIC in Game 3 of the ALDS—NOW IT’S TIME FOR SOME MORE!!!!!!
NOW LET’S GO WIN!
Clutch - October 20, 2009
This feels like forced, sarcastic faith.
I’m not buying it.
bc56274 - October 20, 2009
WE WILL PROBABLY WIN GAME 5!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
hows that?
clover_black - October 20, 2009
LOL, I'm not even sure I can get behind that. I'm just "hoping" we can win game five.
I’m a beaten man, c_b.
bc56274 - October 20, 2009
What more do you want?
Want me to pull out some dam pom-poms, put on a mascot costume, and dance on the pitcher’s mound?
I’m excited for this and think they can do it. If you don’t believe me, and if you don’t believe, period, then that’s not my problem!
Clutch - October 21, 2009
All I want are seven more wins.
That’s it.

Well the one thing to remember
is that you had to assume that the Angels were going to lose one of the games at home…it will be 3-2 don’t worry. I am more concerned about Game 6 against Andy Pettite in New York. Thats going to be the biggest game of the series
DM_RMBRS '95 - October 20, 2009
This
Downing Rules - October 20, 2009
i like this thinking
clover_black - October 20, 2009
I approve this message
halofan4life - October 20, 2009
There are lot of things still giving the Angels hope
They lost two game in NYY but we could really be at 2-2 right now. But oh well its 3-1. However, we’re still at home for Game 5 against AJ Burnett who is a little erratic and will definitely give up some runs the second time around the batters see him in a game. I believe that Lackey keeps us close in the game and we pull through close something like 6-4 or 7-5.
Then we get that huge off day which is the travel back. Trust me i dont think the Yanks want to go to game 7 so Girardi is going to be over managing again, like pulling out Andy andy and hoping someone like Joba Chamberlain steps up and we’ll have a chance.
I hardly think this series is over and i am fairly confident that we will be biting our nails come Sat night. cant guarentee that game, but we’ll have a chance.
DM_RMBRS '95 - October 20, 2009
I was at the game tonight
1. Obnoxious Yankee chicks got tossed for being obnoxious. [Club Section 238 Row X. You know who you are.] So that was cool.
2. I’d rather lose by 9 runs than 1 run. 1 more close game loss and I would be in the cardiac ward. That being said, MATT PALMER? What the F?
3. Sabathia is so sick. I hate to admit it, but the man has some wicked stuff.
4. No discredit to CC, but our bats are cold. Colder than my ex-gf’s private parts.
5. Much love to Howie for going yard. His manly display will not soon be forgotten by me.
6. I like the pitching matchups from here on out. Our three studs will be rested, theirs will not. That being said, I do not want to face Sabathia again. Not for love or money.
LazorkoRules - October 20, 2009
that was Kendry that hit the homerun

Obnoxious Yankee chicks
Before opiejeanne teh English Major arrives, I should point out that this phrase is redundant.

Shhhh. I said I threw it all away for Music.
Besides, I’m redundant. Also. Too.

that’s RF pavilion.

Santana
shouldn’t he be allowed to pitch like 6 in’s if needed. And I don’t know why he didn’t get the start over Kaz. Santana has owned the Yanks in the post season. Any chance he starts GM 7 or is to late to redo the rotation?
RedAces - October 20, 2009
He had pitched the last 2 games prior
You factor in the warming up and the emotions and him not being a guy that gets humped 3days straight you have gotten all your going to get out of him
Angel Aviator - October 20, 2009
true
but how about kaz getting the spot over him. or how about GM 7
RedAces - October 20, 2009
I know that Kaz has had good success against NY
but i dont think he’s done it in the post and Santana has
RedAces - October 20, 2009
but you are right about the pitching
Lackey > Burnett
Saunders > Pettite
really if the offense does ANYTHING (which it hasnt) then this is easily a tied series at 3-3
DM_RMBRS '95 - October 20, 2009
You see the thing is .
It seems as if all playoffs long i’ve been waiting for the offense to break out.
Sure it has had it’s good moments but I have yet to really see the bats find it’s full potential.
But maybe thats just me.
deejayelleseven - October 21, 2009 via mobile
I like Lackey v Burnett at home
and Weave in game 7 [our 3rd look at Sabathia – that HAS to mean something.] but Saunders v Pettite in NY for Game 6 scares the hell out of me.
LazorkoRules - October 22, 2009
Before Melky's two-run single, the Yankees were 0 for their last 26 with men batting in scoring position?
Wow….

maybe with 2 outs?
Angel Aviator - October 20, 2009
Only one out when he got the hit.
bc56274 - October 20, 2009
It was correct
Yankees were struggling just as bad as you guys with men in scoring position in this series. Broke out a little though last night.

Terry Smith on Angels Talk reported that
the UMPIRES for this series were selected by MLB base upon “merit.” What does this say about the standards of MLB in regards to their umpires. And if these guys like McClelland are the best than how bad are the average or especially the poor umpires????
Jack Frost - October 20, 2009
IMO
this inept officiating is just as bad as the steroid scandal and there needs to be a house cleaning immediately.
Will the union allow it? Probably not. This is def. a cancer in baseball, and its affecting ALL teams.
clover_black - October 20, 2009
It's cold comfort,
but I have to believe that McClelland got back to his hotel room tonight, saw how he single-handedly made the most clusterfucked and boneheaded call ever recorded on video, in the midst of a critical AL Championship Series, rationalized his sorry ass into the least lame excuse he could find, and has now run out of all the tiny liquor bottles in his mini-bar trying to drug his sorry ass off to sleep. Forever shall he wear the shame of this pathetic non-performance.
Stirrups - October 20, 2009

opiejeanne - October 22, 2009
We should all be grateful for one thing.
At least we didn’t sign that cheating, rotten teammate, Manny Ramirez.
I just heard he was busy showering while the Dodgers coughed up their one-run ninth-inning lead.
What a scumbag.
bc56274 - October 20, 2009
Really? Man-Ram was showering while the game was going on?
Hard to believe (well, maybe not with him) , but if true he’s topped himself there. That even beats talking on his cell phone between innings and taking a piss behind the Green Monster during a game.
Jack Frost - October 20, 2009
$25 million a season apparently doesn't pay enough to care whether your team wins or not.
bc56274 - October 20, 2009
What idiots voted for Kazmir?
Doesn’t matter what they score if we’re only putting up 1. Blame the offense.
brokenyard - October 20, 2009
Kazmir put the game out of reach
A pitcher who keeps his team in the game does not give up 5 runs in less than 5 innings, period. Especially in a game in which his offense is going against one of the top three pitchers in the game today and you can only reasonably expect a few runs of support. Hence I voted for Kazmir.
But yes, it’s pretty much a TeamFail.
Clutch - October 21, 2009
As this whole series has been, Game 3 excepted.
Clutch - October 21, 2009
kazmir only gave up 4 officially
he had no business going back on that mound to start the 5th against a guy who has historically abused him.
Scioscia trots him out, he promptly gives up a rocket single.
Then Scioscia compounds it by putting in a hurt Bulger pitching in back to back games for the first time since sept 25th.
2 RUN HOMER, GAME OUT OF REACH 5-0
Kazmir sucked, but he wasn’t done any favors by his manager, his catcher, or the umpire. If Scioscia has the infield in instead of halfway, or just plays them back … Kazmir gains an out instead of a run scoring fc for no outs. That alone cost him at least 1 run when Cano ended up scoring, and maybe 2 runs if a drawn in Kendrick throws out the runner at home.
They didn;t exactly knock kazmir around, couple bloop hits, a bunt hit. If Figgy isn’t 15 feet off the 3rd baseline, maybe he knocks down posada’s double. If Rivera wasn’t a .200 hitter for the last 2 months, maybe he doesn’t ground into that dp. whole lotta what ifs, like what if CC got food poisoning.
Quinlan's Goofy Swing - October 21, 2009
Yeah well, I wouldn’t vote for him because we still would have lost if he only gave up 2 runs
brokenyard - October 21, 2009
Like I said, TeamFail
But if we’re determining who deserves the MOST blame, I say Kazmir. And, probably, the offense for hacking, hacking, hacking away.
Notice how after we had that pic of Mickey working with Vlad on Sunday, Vlad went at least 2 hits the following game, including a clutch 2-run home run? And the team as a whole had a bunch more hits? What happened to that approach?
Come on Mickey! DO IT!
Clutch - October 21, 2009
Are you guys aware
that the yankees won 10-1?? no amount of bad calls makes up for CC Sabathia dominating your lineup. and the bad calls went against both teams. it is so annoying to come on here after every game you lose and you blame it on umpiring. i cant believe i’m defending the yankees.
revived0103 - October 21, 2009
No amount of bad calls? I would disagree with that.
However, you are right tonight that the calls that were bad might not have cost the game.
“Every game” we complain on umpiring. We have a blame of the game system. Not once do I see “umpires” as being “awarded” with a blame. So, you are wrong. We blame our players all the time.
You defend the Yanks? Uh, an innocent Mariano Rivera runs around yet you still call him a “spitter.” (see your recent vote in an OTM poll).
Downing Rules - October 21, 2009
i'm speaking more to rev halofan
every time you lose, he brings up the umpiring. even today, in a blowout. its just not interesting or close to being based in reality.
i am kind of defending the yanks, in that i’m saying that they won fair and square, and not due to the blown calls. all the umpiring gaffes did was make me laugh, they didnt affect the outcome.
haha, its obvious he wasnt spitting (another crazy thing rev has said) i was saying yes as a joke, as i think most people who said yes were.
revived0103 - October 21, 2009
Hable Ingles
what are you rambling on about here at 1 a.m.ish
Rev Halofan - October 21, 2009
So, now you and Rev are one in the same… He writes these things to incite, to JOKE and to get reactions. You voted Rivera as a “SPITTER” as a joke. So, some Yankee fan can now go to Over the Monster and have the hair raise on the back of HIS neck saying, “How can you call the best closer in the game a spitter, when he really didn’t spit? This is a bad image of your website where ALL YOUR FANS propogate the fallacy that Rivera spits on teh ball.”
As Depeche Mode once said, “People are People.”
Downing Rules - October 21, 2009
I wont blame the Umps
Saying bad calls went against both teams is stretching it though. After all the one bad call that went against the Yanks shouldn’t have happened had they gotten the damn thing right at 2nd base and called him out on the pick off play. Swicher was clearly out and should have never been at 3rd to begin with. The catch in CF would have ended the inning right there. Again the umpires did not determine the outcome but they were awful.
Angel Aviator - October 21, 2009
yeah but you cant say theres any bias
for the yankees among the umpires because they did give you the makeup call on swisher. so it just happened to go more their way tonight. man that play at third was hysterical. could not have been an easier call. how often is a man standing still a foot and a half off the base, clearly tagged with a bear hand and called safe? it makes me laugh in kind of a sick way.
revived0103 - October 21, 2009
I would never call out bias
Maybe in a little league game that dad umpires but not in MLB. The Angels got their hat handed to them. No need for excuses the only excuses that good be given for the poor effort out there was they were awful. Now lets start game 5 and move on ….
Angel Aviator - October 22, 2009
Just got home from the Big A
Our offense was flat tonight with the exception of one AB
halofan1 - October 21, 2009
It's ridiculous to blame the umps
We aren’t hitting shit.
2 nights ago it was Rivera throwing spitballs. Last night it was bad officiating. Some of you are making us sound like a bunch of cry babies.
We’re losing because we aren’t hitting. Simple as that
Were the umps good last night? Hell no. But that terrible call at third didn’t cost us a run, so let it go. You need to hit to win, and once again were choking in the playoffs
KingF15h - October 21, 2009
Agreed
From what I saw of the ump behind the plate I thought he was consistent (and that graph above shows that), so I wasn’t sure where all the different strike zone talk was coming from. CC (and the Yankees) flat out beat us with our impatience at the plate in games 1 and last night. Game 2 we lost (Cause our bats have been AWOL).
Do I think the Angels are flat out done? No, do I think the Angels are close to done? Yes. But if by the grace of a higher power they actually get hits & clutch hits, we could turn it around…maybe.
Dontbatvlad4th - October 21, 2009
He was consistent ...
if you compare CC’s zone to itself from inning to inning. Kaz’s zone to itself from inning to inning. I have little faith in that graph above.
Downing Rules - October 21, 2009
I can appreciate the passion of the Halos Heaven family
Respectfully, some of the posts are getting way over the top. I can absolutely appreciate the fervor of the loyal Angel fan base; I’m there with you “living and dying” on every pitch – and have been for 40 years. However, the decorum of some has gone totally out the window on these posts to the degree that this site is no longer a “family friendly” environment.
Yes, I know that if I don’t like it – I can always just stop coming here. I’m hoping there’s another alternative: there’s a code of conduct for the site, maybe it’s time we all tried harder to follow it?

Big Bad, 'Vlad'! - October 22, 2009
Jietoh's reasons for last nights results...
Lets call a spade a spade…
1) Umps were bad but didn’t effect the outcome of last nights game. We said the same thing when the wrong calls went our way when Boston was in town, we need to acknowlage it now. NO EFFECT.
2) We didn’t hit for crap, we didn’t pitch for crap. We must be a crap team… Wait a minute. We’re not a crap team. This is the same team that took the Yanks to extra innings two nights in a row. Kazmir was only getting the edge of the strike zone half the time so he should have adjusted rather than allow so many walks. SMALL EFFECT.
3) Yankees hit well, Yankees pitched well. I think we’ve found a cause. They were better than us last night… BIG EFFECT.
Lets hope tomorrow is different. We have Bernett going against Lackey. We should be able to get to Bernett if we remain patient and work the count. Bernett can be wild, is wild most of the time. We just need to expoit this weakness. John needs to stay focused and tread the emotional knife edge between intensity and meltdown like he did in game one against Boston.
Jietoh - October 21, 2009
exactly
totally agree about the three points. that is why we lost game 4. and the other games were fielded horribly. the pitching was carrying the angels this postseason, with the hitters showing up in the 5th inning or later – when they didn’t pitch, we didn’t win.
and on a side note: the angels team next year will look a lot different than this years. and not just the free agents, if they get a splash. i’m not talking about free agent acquisitions, I see Arte making the team a lot younger because of this years BS playoffs – against Boston and Yankees. The Angels have rarely gotten timely hitting (except game 3 of ALDS and 4 of ALCS).
Halos in DE - October 21, 2009
strike zones
does anyone have the link or picture of the two strike zones for yankees hitters and angels hitters? if you know title of thread if on halosheaven that would be swell too.
Halos in DE - October 21, 2009
I didn't read every comment...
…but I haven’t found anyone criticizing HK for the bad throw to Napoli that allowed A-Roid to score the first run. That became an important play in the game.
If Howie’s throw was more accurate – so that Napoli didn’t have to jump to get it – A-Roid would have been out, and I doubt the Yankees would have scored 3 runs in the inning.
sothball - October 21, 2009
I was going to post that last night and forgot ... good call.
That was a TERRIBLE throw.
Downing Rules - October 21, 2009
Halo D has looked amateurish most of these playoffs. that whole Abreu to Figgins things last night was embarrassing.
Stirrups - October 21, 2009
Yup. Bad time for the defense to revert to (at times) Rookie League form.
At times, Aybar has looked really sharp. At other times (the missed pop fly in game one, not cutting off the throw last night) he has looked really shaky.
sothball - October 21, 2009
i put kaz as the blame but, honestly,
it wasn’t all his fault. if gameday is any kind of accurate at all, kaz was painting the corner all night and he wasn’t getting anything.
if anything, i put this on the team as a whole. they didn’t look like a team with all the momentum coming off a spectacular walk-off. also, what’s with soth not starting mathis? numbers and who caught who be damned, you don’t bench one of the few hitters in your line-up that’s actually hitting the ball.
