Final Score in 11 Innings in Los Angeles of Anaheim: Angels 5, Yankees 4
A four hour plus game of extended action and intrigue ended on a booming hit and an even quicker exit from the national broadcasters terrified of interviewing players they know nothing about. Despite being the most dramatic postseason moment yet, FOX coverage of the game quickly split because Derek Jeter's jock did not need washing.
A grueling battle of men left on base, baserunning miscues, and lost opportunities, solo power shots and clutch hits was not wasted this time. The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim got a 2-out walk-off double in extra innings by their late-inning substitute catcher to drive in their platooning 2Bman who was sent to the minors mid-season.
In postgame comments, Yankee skipper Joe Girardi said he could not stretch out über-closer Mariano Rivera more than one inning and than stupidly replaced a no-name reliever (Hummerson? Roberta Smith? Fox broadcasters were so excited to go to a commercial for more money to send Rupert Murdoch's way that they barely discussed anything but the genius of the Yankee manager) in the 11th with 2 outs for Alfredo Aceves. He gave up a base hit to Howie Kendrick. that left Howie a double shy of the cycle and Jeff Mathis complied with booming walk-off double to the base of Left Field wall.
There were many moments in the game where the Angels tried to hand the Yankees the game. Call it a tightrope, call it fate, the Mathis double saved many many goats in red from being forever remembered a braying in the hay field. Kevin Jepsen let the Yankees tie the game with a solo HR to Jorge Posada on a pitch that the average little leaguer would have hit over the centerfield wall. Bobby Abreu turned a leadoff double turn into a leadoff out as he was picked off trying ot get back to 2nd after deciding not to stretch it into a triple. Even worse than the out it caused, it allowed Fox to slobber love drool over Jeter for a routine pick-off - in fact Melky Cabrera's great fielding was ignored in order for Fox to lovingly chew Jeter's sack once again.
All of the Yankee runs were solo homers. But no way this overpaid lineup invests in better living thru chemistry. No way, you can bet the Brooklyn bridge you just bought from Tooth Fairy Realty on it.

okay, we can win this series, the Yanks overuse their pen, they have only three starters
tanana40 - October 19, 2009
yep
although i wouldnt mind if we just batted against aceves all day…
ZiK - October 19, 2009
Yanks pen is pretty fresh
since GIrardi only lets them throw about 10 pitches each.
NewportHalo - October 19, 2009
Rivera has pitched in all 3 games

KingF15h - October 19, 2009
Mathis deserves all the bashing he gets
and I’m a Mathis fan, however it’s moments like this that remind us why we love baseball
Seik1177 - October 19, 2009
not after today
That was the biggest hit of the season
KingF15h - October 19, 2009
He gets a postseason pass from me
but if he hits below the Mendoza line next season, the abuse continuuuuuues
Moondoggy - October 19, 2009
right here.
There are regular season heroes, like Torii, who mash and grind and get through their demons to get you there. Then there are post-season heroes… who can be anyone. I love Mathis, but I really wish he’d start hitting the ball in the regular season.
Great game this baseball.
shiftyeyedgoat - October 19, 2009
Sosh should talk with Mathis
hire a someone to hypnotize him into thinking the whole game is in extra innings. then he’ll hit like panther all the time. lol
HALO_86 - October 19, 2009
YES!
Clutch - October 19, 2009
And throw runners out at second like he did Brett Gardner today.
That was other worldly for Mathis to hit that with pinpoint accuracy.
44FAN - October 20, 2009
Well, it WAS a pitchout with a Jepsen fastball.
Not otherworldly. Great, and so well needed, and something that we haven’t had a lot of this year, even on pitchouts.
AlanFalcon - October 20, 2009
For my part, even if Mathis gets to stand on the mound and throw to 2B,
…NOT sailing the ball into CF under duress IS otherworldy. And highly appreciated.

Send the bill to Joe Girardi in room #2153
Thanx!
3rd Echelon - October 19, 2009
Post Season Mathis is awesome!
I agree! No more Mathis Bashing! 2 Doubles today. Throw out at second that makes the game tied not giving the Yankees a lead! A double last game, and the incredible block at the plate against ARod!

a huge hit is one that wins games not sure what your definition of huge hit is but its 1 for Mathis and it is HUGE

I got in a fight with a bitch at my potter class who told me she didn’t want to listen to baseball, and told me I should have brought headphones and my own radio. I said, yeah right, you want to listen to K-EARTH? If you don’t want to listen to baseball put in some earplugs.
You’d think she owned the place. A bunch of people who couldn’t quite hear the radio kept coming over to my work area to find out the score, including the instructor.

I have already played hooky in order to buy tickets to the ALDS game, and I'm out of time for the mid-term.
I arranged with the teacher last week to turn the radio to the game. Jeez, K-EARTH just has a 3-hour loop and she would rather hear that than our Angels? This is about 3 miles from the stadium, at Santa Ana College, and she is supposedly an Angels fan.
opiejeanne - October 19, 2009
She's not a fan, just another bandwagon jumper
Big Bad, 'Vlad'! - October 19, 2009
She's a tiny lady, probably in her 70s, and pretty damned mean at times.
I’ve put up with her bad temper for 5 years because of her age, but today was Just Enough.
opiejeanne - October 19, 2009
Nope.
If the rains had forced todays game to tomorrow, I’d have had to bail out too…
I have my final project presentation in Cisco class tomorrow.
red floyd - October 19, 2009
Uh, who was that directed to?
opiejeanne - October 19, 2009
Big Bad Vlad, who called you a bandwagonner.
red floyd - October 20, 2009
He called the woman I was talking about a bandwagonner.
Because I said “she is supposedly an Angels fan”.
My class is pottery, the radio is always on K-EARTH except when someone with half a brain switches it to Jack-FM, and that only lasts until the instructor wanders through and realizes the background drone has become something actually interesting.
opiejeanne - October 20, 2009
Please don't use derogatory terms for women.

…where Torii, Juan, and K-Mo seem too tense, Howie is definitely hitting his stride at the right time.
sothball - October 19, 2009
Their nervousness worries me.
Our biggest hitters are soiling their trousers. We need to give them a big boost if we want to finish this up at the Bronx.
27up27down - October 19, 2009
Hopefully they realize it's a series now...
…and have better approaches at the plate.
sothball - October 19, 2009
They are trying too hard. We all know those guys can hit, but they're all trying to hit it out of the park when a single would do.
opiejeanne - October 19, 2009
Vladimir Howard Mathis......
What a game!….its a series now! they gave us life!
Angels_48 - October 19, 2009
lol, it's the lovechild of the three.
27up27down - October 19, 2009
Kendrick was amazing! But come on!
You guys always crusify Mathis! Give him some credit! We may be swearing at him again tomorrow, but tonight HE IS PANTHER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
KingF15h - October 19, 2009
shotgun has been looking good!
maybe this is the big hit he needed to finally start living up to his potential at the plate..
with that said, i still voted for howie, he looked like a stud out there today..
b0rd3rline - October 19, 2009
awesome win...
halos are back in this series… every game has been competitive… and finally the halos get the LAST big hit in the game. they still got a lot to work on… namely RISP clutchness… but every game the halos look better… im calling a big game tomorrow … lets go halos !!
BigBangRobbDawgg - October 19, 2009

Angels_48 - October 19, 2009

GMJ the defense is a liability but his bat may come alive.
Vlad Dracul - October 19, 2009
GMJ D is better than Juan
at least GMJ will dive for it
KingF15h - October 19, 2009
yeahh i would give GMJ a shot if i were Scioscia
Angels_48 - October 19, 2009
i think juan starts tomorrow against cc
but if he doesnt do shit, he sits rest of the series, or at least against burnett
Quinlan's Goofy Swing - October 19, 2009

KingF15h - October 19, 2009

dr-awkward - October 19, 2009
Especially the little clip where he was flipping through the binder.
“Hmmm… no history against any of these hitters! Perfect!”
27up27down - October 19, 2009
lol yeah wtf was that
ZiK - October 19, 2009
HAHAHA!
the little hoppity-skippity thing over to the binder was priceless….what the hell WAS THAT?
dr-awkward - October 19, 2009

2002
Quinlan's Goofy Swing - October 19, 2009
I keep telling my co-workers
I live in the Bay Area, and I work with alot of rabid Giants fans. They ALWAYS seem to forget that Ortiz owned the Angels, then Dusty came out and took the ball away and patted Ortiz on the ass. THAT was the moment that cost the Giants the 2002 World Series.. but still, all I hear is how great Bonds is..
HalosFanInNorCal - October 19, 2009
he didn't just pat him on the ass
He gave him the game ball as a souvenir. right there in front of everyone. Fuck Dusty Baker. Win or lose, that was some low-life BS right there!
KingF15h - October 19, 2009
oh, yeah I know. I was just trying to be kinda diplomatic
HalosFanInNorCal - October 19, 2009
No need, you're among friends.
opiejeanne - October 19, 2009
thank you!
it can be hard living in hostile territory :)
HalosFanInNorCal - October 19, 2009
I know. We lived in Castro Valley for 9 years, just south of Oakland.
We supported the A’s while we were there, and wore their colors unless they were playing the Angels.
opiejeanne - October 19, 2009
I meant to add that we did that because the Giants fans were intolerable.
opiejeanne - October 19, 2009
Playing the way your expeted to play
is, I think, more panther right now considering how we’ve been underperforming. Thus, I voted for HK. Mathis was great (Adam Kennedy-esque) but we need guys to just play as good as they are which is what HK did tonight. The Yankees are so beatable right now. Without A-roid were up 3-0.
Match Day 5 - October 19, 2009
fuck arod...
if we just play error-free baseball we’re up at least 2-1
BigBangRobbDawgg - October 19, 2009
JEFF MATHIS
Dogged on WAY too much on this site, while his platoon partner gets bizarrely overrated.
clover_black - October 19, 2009
you mean the king of the strikeout?
KingF15h - October 19, 2009
he's regressed to embarrassing propotions
and his D has always been..well… lets just say the future at C looks bright.
clover_black - October 19, 2009
not saying the future is Mathis at all..
and I do like napoli..he’s just the most overrated player on HH. hah.
clover_black - October 19, 2009
We've got power at catcher coming up through the minors I think
I don’t know for sure, I don’t follow it like these guys
KingF15h - October 19, 2009
Is it that Conger dude?
Seriously, some Halo guru help us out!
27up27down - October 19, 2009
I think so, yeah
KingF15h - October 19, 2009
i believe, if given a chance...
wilson could be solid too
BigBangRobbDawgg - October 19, 2009
Conger is the future.
Can’t wait for the guy to ride the Southwest Shuttle between Salt Lake and John Wayne.
Slasher52 - October 19, 2009
My Wife and I have started a tradition of talking S about Mathis to ensure he gets the hit...worked twice tonight
thehalobender - October 19, 2009
Keep it going...
dr-awkward - October 19, 2009
i just promised i wouldn't say another bad word about mathis ever again
maybe i should reconsider?
ZiK - October 19, 2009

thehalobender - October 19, 2009
lol im like hell mathis is gonna strikeout crap .
and BOOM.
Jeff Mathis FTW!!!
Hopefully His Brother Ka$h Money pitches well today.
deejayelleseven - October 20, 2009
This reminds me of Rocky 4
Rocky’s getting his ass kicked by the unbeatable communist jugernaut. Then, out of nowhere, he cuts him open!
“See? He’s Human! He’s not a machine, he’s a man! "
The Yanks are human…and we can take ’em down!
KingF15h - October 19, 2009

BigBangRobbDawgg - October 19, 2009

Teixeira Who? - October 19, 2009
OBTW, Will Joe Fuck Eat some crow and admit he was wrong, when he was basically saying Sosh messed up by not pinch running Mathis for Willits?
I totally agreed with that decision, no willits needed. keep mathis in the game.
WIN!!!!!
Big Bad, 'Vlad'! - October 19, 2009
He did
while the Soth was giving Mathis a congratulatory pummel.
TheTypingFiend - October 19, 2009
They don't have a clue.
They see “catcher” on base, and assume he’s slow. It could have been Craig Biggio, Jason Kendall, or B.J. Surhoff in their catching primes and they would have been ragging for the lack of a pinch runner. Buck and McCarver are the most inept broadcasters this side of Joe Morgan.
Slasher52 - October 19, 2009

i like it

That moment is very symbolic.
The “unstoppable” Yankee machine was symbolically destroyed on that very play.
27up27down - October 19, 2009
That links to Vladdy's home run.
Girardi looks like he’s going to have a stroke.
opiejeanne - October 19, 2009
Mathis' big hit right after the Vladdy homer
Had to sneak in some props for Vlad. ;)
Fan Since 1981 - October 19, 2009
Mathis
i’m just glad he came through. all the past off-season crap he took on this site. its only 1 game but damn that beautiful hitting.
Vald-i hope that HR kickstarts the rest of teh series for him. impacts the 3 and 5 hitters in the lineup. looking at Torii and K-Mo. cmon fellas
HK-awesome. he looks soo confidant up there swingin. totally different from earlier in the season.
just 1 note. Melky has a awesome arm. he threw that ball with enough zip and distance. if we had a slower runner it might have been close.
HALO_86 - October 19, 2009
that guy has a cannon
could not believe he nearly gunned him down from shallow cen-left
Vlad Dracul - October 19, 2009
when i saw the replay i think it further then shallow, whatever the case cannon arm
HALO_86 - October 19, 2009
Good Game by you guys even tho we both left everyone on base
Girardi is an idiot btw. We’ll have to see tomorrow

? about the Vlad HR...
was it a no doubter ? i missed it due to work but i heard the roar of the crowd from the office when it happened
BigBangRobbDawgg - October 19, 2009
It was an ownage
He tore the cover off of it
TheAntiSox - October 19, 2009
not really, it landed in the bullpen
KingF15h - October 19, 2009
It died a little at the end
But it was struck.
He did that little pose where he stands in the box and watches it fly before trotting that he does when he knows its gone.
TheAntiSox - October 19, 2009
Oh yeah, it was a no doubter! But it did just land in the pen
KingF15h - October 19, 2009
The crowd seemed to know it was coming, according to Terry and Rory.
opiejeanne - October 19, 2009
There was electricity in the park at that point.
The Rally Monkey made an appearance, if I remember correctly, and then he fouled off a couple of pitches — everyone could do that math, a blast in that spot ties the game that we had been losing from the first batter. I know I was going wild with my Thunder Stix and Rory (or was it Terry?) said that the crowd could feel that something big was going to happen. Boy was that a perfect call. I had an in-ear noise canceling headphone in left left ear, listening to the roar of the crowd in my right ear, and when he hit it I sprung up and my headphone came out of my left ear and I felt dizzy with the full force of the noise and the magnitude of the hit, and how this was quite possibly the best game I’d ever attended. I had to watch Rivera’s at bat through my Thunder Stix as I choked up, standing in V522, Row A, Seat 11 — in other words, Cloud 9. When I later heard the replay of the radio call of the Home Run, I thought it couldn’t have been described any better.

What a game!!!
Hello from the Big A!
We’re 2-0 in post season games I’ve been too now – and this was every bit as exciting as Game 7 of the World Series was. Well, very nearly. Lots of heroes and lots of goats, but in the end the better team won it.

moosemastr - October 19, 2009
FWIW, the bullpen today was pretty damned solid.
Better than theirs, which is supposed to be their HUGE advantage in the matchups. And Girardi is shredding theirs, anyway.
6 innings, 3 H, 1 ER, 4 BB’s, 9 K’s
Stirrups - October 19, 2009

thrill000 - October 19, 2009
And Fuentesaurus looked solid but Jepsen looked shaky.
angelskid2210 - October 19, 2009
Jepsen pitched two, didn't he? I can't remember but I figured if he was in for a second inning there would be trouble.
opiejeanne - October 19, 2009
Our pitching as a whole has been just shy of phenomenal.
The Yankees have scored 9 ER in 32 innings. That’s an ERA under 3. If our defense can get things under control, our pitching will give us chances to win the game.
TheOptimist - October 19, 2009
Jepsen
looked a little shaky with control other then that it was awesome. Fuentes did his job tonight.

That play by Melky in center was great! But They were too busy sucking Jeter’s dick, when in reality all Jeter did was his job. He was where any SS should have been. Any SS could have made that play.
Fuck you FOX. Fuck you Tim “Izturis missed that sac bunt last year” McCarver. You senile old fuck

Zu Long - October 19, 2009
I'm sure it was discussed in the game thread...
but was anyone surprised Mathis didn’t go on contact on Figgins’ gb to Texeria?
I know the Angels force the issue and always go on contact in those situations?
Also – what was Torii doing taking a 2-0 fastball from Mo with the bases loaded??
GREAT GAME HALOS!!
eastcoastAngel - October 19, 2009
No contact play with no outs
With one out you can still get teh sac fly across.
With one out the contact play is on because the second out means no sac fly possibility

What a freaking game, don’t even have words for how amazing that was!
101halo - October 19, 2009
Hey Chris! I was listening in my car, it was great to hear your call!
AlanFalcon - October 19, 2009
Anyone else hear it? did it suck? haha
I had nothing left in my voice… My section was silent during the time the Angels were losing, so i was trying to get them going. No profanity, no insults. Yet I got asked to sit down… which i found really insulting.
101halo - October 19, 2009
I said it already, but I'll repeat that it was a great call, and a great shout out to HH!
I was in the front row of my section, and I stood and made everyone behind me stand too. I think the Yankees fans directly behind me miss some at-bats because they refused to stand on those two out two strike pitches… They didn’t miss anything they would want to see, either. The usher by me was very good about keeping people walking from blocking the view while also being understanding about those of us in the stands wanting to stand and cheer on our team.
AlanFalcon - October 19, 2009
cheers then friend, cheers!
Glad you were doing the same as me! The team needed it tonight, and both of us did all we could to contribute! But ultimate props to Vlad and Mathis… wow!

I think the Angels could make a pretty strong case that he needs to be disciplined for it. At a minimum a fine. Otherwise I say Lackey urinates on a ball before he pitches to A-Rod. I mean seriously what’s the difference?

And plus, tipping pitches isn’t illegal.

Mathis was clutch, Jepsen was not. Fuentes was clutch, Torii was not. Vlad was a little bit of both. This is a series now, boys!

$80 on StubHub for me.
Add $10 for parking at the game, $15 for one of those Villa Nova sausages (yum!) and some sodas (bad idea if you refuse to leave your seat to use the bathroom and the game goes to extras!!) and I think that there is nearly no better way to spend a hundred bucks and a Monday afternoon. I can’t afford to do it often, and this is the first post season game I have ever paid to get into (sold programs at Game 7 of the World Series) but if I can in any way convince you to live off ramen for a week and attend a game… please let me!

AlanFalcon - October 19, 2009
I got a question...
during the playoffs (so now in the ALCS) do they have a T.V. in the parking lot? ps Doyers lose down 3-1
SenorChuckles - October 19, 2009
Wow the Phillies came back on them in the 9th? Just wow, that must have been a heckuva game.
I didn’t see a TV in the Parking Lot.
AlanFalcon - October 19, 2009
ahh fuck...
Im going to kick it at the parking lot then with some friends.
SenorChuckles - October 19, 2009
Anyone go to the ALDS last year?
I notice a big screen or T.V. in the parking lot, I really didnt pay much attention to it because I was ready for game 2. Can anyone tell me what that was?
SenorChuckles - October 19, 2009
Senor Chuckles, it looks like you're wrong.
The ever-accurate MLB.com says the Dodgers won, so it must be true.
They also had a headline: “Angels Prove They’re Not a Tough Out” at one point tonight.
AlanFalcon - October 19, 2009
Let the Doyer love fest begin!
SenorChuckles - October 19, 2009
This series will be 2-2 tomorrow.
CC is a fat turd on 3 days rest. The angel bats woke up. Sosh will play Howie, one of the top hitters in all of baseball. Vlad, who took a short vacation saturday, is back to punishing chumps.
Thousands of New Yorkers have put their hopes and dreams in a fat ass from Vallejo, California. Break CC, and this team will fold like a lawn chair.
Lets do this shit, I’m so ready for tomorrow.
clover_black - October 19, 2009
CC has apparently had some good starts on short rest, but I agree he's still a fat turd on any rest.
And the Yankee Bullpen is getting worn down so there won’t be much relief when CC has to leave early.
AlanFalcon - October 19, 2009
hopefully C.C. doesnt go 8 innings :/
SenorChuckles - October 19, 2009
ouch...
painfully ominous prediction.
Downing Rules - October 21, 2009
he has had some good starts on 3 days rest but
He has admitted that due to pitching on 3 days rest he will not have his best fastball and have to rely on his control. He thinks this is an advantage but we will have to see it it is. Also he did wear out on his post season 3 day rest appearance. Granted this year is much different I still have a good feeling about it for us.
RedAces - October 19, 2009
"CC is a fat turd on 3 days rest"
He’s a fat turd on any day’s rest. What matters is how he pitches

Who else needs to wake up
I think our sleeping giant is starting to wake. Figgy had some good at bats, Vlad had a huge homer, Abreau hit but needs to practice on base running, Howie had a huge game, Matthis was just amazing, and I know Torri is still dead in offense. Who else. And does someone know what the line up will most likely look like and not what you would want it to be.
RedAces - October 19, 2009
Figgy was still horrible, and left 4 on base.
He did have a good hit, but he needs to be left out of the lineup (not gonna change this stance until he has a spectacular game… granted i listened to the game on the radio and didnt get a good feel of how he did at the plate, but his inability to get the ball out of the infield when runners were on 1st and 3rd is pitiful, and checking the box score, his production looked similar to saturdays game).
Somebody that needs to STEP THE FUCK UP is juan rivera. I dont know what that guy is doing out there, besides GIDP and hitting it to johnny damon. I say put GMJ in there, he can’t do much worse, and recently he has been MR CLUTCH with RISP..yeah he’s vulnerable to the strike out, but dude takes too much flack on HH, and everyone seems to forget that rivera has been laying an egg this post season.
clover_black - October 19, 2009
oh yeah, kendry needs to step up also...he's doing just about as well as juan
but with tex sucking balls, it seems to lessen the sting.
clover_black - October 19, 2009
I saw Figgys at bats
and while he didn’t have a Howie like day he looks to be playing better. Still shakey and I like Izturis more than him.
And yes Juan Rivera and Morales need to step it up. I agree that GMJ might be a better choice at this point. But not sure if it’s a good idea against CC.
RedAces - October 19, 2009
KKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKMO
3 hits I think
figgifig - October 20, 2009
I have not read any of the above
Just wanted to add my two cents. On 23 July 2008 Roger and I saw Jeff Mathis hit a grand slam and have six rbi in a 14-11 win over Cleveland. However, years down the road when Mathis’ grandkids ask him about his favorite game Jeff no doubt will answer 2009 ALCS Game 3. I have been to 107 MLB games this season. This afternoon’s game was the BEST of the year. It will be very difficult (not impossible) to top.
Thinking of Angel catchers past, back on 14 June 1967 I saw Bob Rodgers have a walk-off 2-run single against Cleveland in a 3-2 Halos win. Earlier Rodgers hit a solo home run. It was Playboy Bunny night at the Big A. Rodgers heroics probably did not amount to much with the Bunnies because he was already married. Jeff Mathis’ game today was better than Bob Rodgers Playboy Bunny game in 1967!
All along I have figured the Angels to win all three games in Anaheim against the Yanks. We only have to win one game in New York. My fearless forecast is for the Angels to win four in a row. Kudos to Howie Kendrick today. He came in second in my player of the game vote. Any game in which you score the winning run is a good game.
Yetijuice - October 19, 2009
Great report!
And boy do I wish I could hit as many games in a year as you have! Season Tix for Angels AND Dodgers?

I am so fucking happy with tonight's game.
Basically what the angels did tonight was said to the Yankees and all their fans “nobody comes in to our house and pushes us around”. Fuck the Yankees. The Angels spend more than 50% less on players than the Yankees do. However, the Yankees still fail to dominate the Angels. The Angels play with heart and that is something the Yankees do not have. All the Angels needed was this one win and their confidence and bats will awaken . Brian Fuentes and Ervin Santana seriously scare me. They suck and do not deserve to play.
