Game Two Final Score - 13 innings: Los Angeles Angels 3, New York Yankees 4
Once again, fighting the rain, the cold, the Yankees and their umpires, the Angels did themselves in by playing sloppy defense and stranding 458 runs on base. Okay, it wasn't that many (actually it was 16), but it felt like the game was over after the Yankees scored their first run.
Wasting a great start by Joe Saunders, and solid relief work by Kevin Jepsen and Darren Oliver, Brian Fuentes surrendered an opposite field home run to Alex Rodriguez in the bottom of the 11th after the Angels had managed to take their first lead of the series.
ALDS Game 3 hero Vladimir Guererro stranded 8 runners, twice leaving the bases loaded and ending the Angels final threat by hitting a weak groundball with two runners in the 13th.
The Angels head to Anaheim, down two games to the Yankees.

It's Fuentes
And it better not be close
Figgi4life - October 17, 2009 via mobile
I dont give a shit........
no matter how many had been left on no matter what had happened the Angels had the lead until Fuentes decided to throw 3 straight fastballs. What is the deal with that? 1 trick pony isnt going to get ARod out. Why not a slider down to change the eye level of the hitter. Nice signal calling Mathis….
Angel Aviator - October 17, 2009
Yeah, 3 straight fastballs to one of the best hitters in the game.
Fucking stupid.
snowhor - October 17, 2009
I couldn't believe he didn't throw an 0-2 slider.
It was an absurd pitch to throw a fastball right over outside part of the plate where ARod could poke it 300 feet for a HR. ARod hits a lot of HRs to right. Bad job by Fuentes for not studying the scouting reports/video.
Fan Since 1981 - October 17, 2009
Hey, Jeff Fucking CERA Mathis called for the fastball.
And since Scioscia spends all day blowing Mathis, you can’t blame him for being so fucking stupid.
BOTG = Fuentes
BOTG2 = Mathis
BOTG3 = Scioscia
BOTG4 = Vlad
BOTG5 = Izturis
BOTG6 = Fuentes again
BOTG7 = every fucking pathetic one of them
BOTG8 = us, for being morons
snowhor - October 17, 2009
Yes, and not only that , ....
but ALL THREE PITCHES were in basically the same location. If you’re throwing 96mph that is not a good idea. If you throw 91-92 it is downright idiotic. I said going into the playoffs that Fuentes was a concern, an Achilles heel if you will. Tonight it came to pass.
Jack Frost - October 17, 2009
That HR does not go out in any other MLB park.
I blame Vlad
Funke5ive - October 17, 2009
I actually wish there were option E
Vlad for being a playoff bust year after year and Fuentes for blowing yet another save. I will be glad when both are gone. Sorry Vlad but you don’t cut it when it matters.
IndyHaloFan - October 18, 2009
fuentes wasn't as bad as krod in the playoffs though
Halos in DE - October 18, 2009
Too many left on base
This game should never have been Fuentes’ to lose.
Match Day 5 - October 17, 2009
But it was.
And he did.
Figgi4life - October 17, 2009
He put it right where our superior catcher called for it.
halofan4life - October 17, 2009
obviously he didnt
Or a-rod would hvave struck out.Fuentes sucks.
HALO_86 - October 17, 2009 via mobile
go watch the replay.
and you’ll realize how stupid that sounded.
howiestheman - October 17, 2009
Watch the replay
Mathis sets up inside and then sticks his glove up for pitch up and away. Then come back and tell me it wasn’t called for that
halofan4life - October 17, 2009
uh huh
because a pitcher never shakes off a pitch
daze - October 17, 2009
When was the last time you saw an Angel pitcher shake one off?
They have To trust their catcher, Fuentes did that.
halofan4life - October 17, 2009
so...
the fuentes apologist task force is out?
daze - October 17, 2009
wearing full riot gear.
Don’t blame’em, lots of shared blame tonight… Fuentes gave it up most dramatically, but everyone else had their hands in failure.
shiftyeyedgoat - October 17, 2009
look, i get that we didn't play to our potential yet again...
but the bottom line for me is that it was brian fuentes who had the ball in his hand and it was brian fuentes who had the option to go “nah, that pitch won’t work here. let’s try another.”
daze - October 17, 2009
No.
The ones who watched Mathis call for a pitch that he should know is the wrong pitch. Fuentes has faced A-Rod 9 times now, I’m willing to bet Jeffy has been behind the plate for plenty of Rodriguez at bats to know that he NEEDS to be pitched inside.
So….Fuentes (minimal experience against A-Rod) listened to Mathis (enough experience against A-Rod), and he got burned.
halofan4life - October 17, 2009
we'll have to agree to disagree then
it’s just too many blown saves to by this guy to chalk it up to “oopsie”
daze - October 17, 2009
So we make a dozen hitting mistakes
but one bad pitch is the reason we lost?
Match Day 5 - October 17, 2009
if he gets the out, we win the game
so… yeah. he is the reason we lost.
daze - October 17, 2009
And there u have it
Angel Aviator - October 17, 2009
if Mathis doesn't call for a stupid pitch out over the plate
we probably win. we pounded him inside all game, and now you want to go over the plate?! Fuentes didn’t miss his pitch… he put it right where Mathis called it.
howiestheman - October 17, 2009
I think we're gonna be the only 2 who think this.
halofan4life - October 17, 2009
probably.
i was screaming at him the whole time though, not Fuentes.
howiestheman - October 17, 2009
i don’t recall mathis throwing the ball to a-roid
daze - October 17, 2009
It's his job to call the pitch and location though
And Fuentes put it where he was “told” to
halofan4life - October 17, 2009
fuentes could’ve easily shaken it off until he found something smarter. the blind leading the blind is no excuse.
daze - October 17, 2009
he called the pitch placement!!!!
what part of that is hard to understand?!
howiestheman - October 17, 2009
Why is this blowing your mind?
If he did his one and only job we would have won.
Teixeira Who? - October 17, 2009
Get to the 9th with a 1 run lead everytime?
That’s a shitty stratgey for winning.
Match Day 5 - October 17, 2009
better than going into the 9th losing
anaheim angels - October 17, 2009
No
Hold a lead, no matter how small, for 3 outs.
Teixeira Who? - October 17, 2009
To blame Fuentes for the loss
is the same as saying 3 runs is enough to beat the Yankees. I don’t accept that.
Match Day 5 - October 17, 2009
Fucking beautiful.
3 runs isnt enough. Blame everyone on the team, especially Glen Beck!
SenorChuckles - October 18, 2009
Doesn't matter
Fuentes is a closer. He should close the fucking game. So he’s not doing his job.
JoseGuillenSux - October 17, 2009
and vlad is a hitter
his position is actually “designated HITTER”. it’s his job to hit the ball.
UCIHalo - October 17, 2009
I'm not saying vlad should get a pass though
he should get some blame too
but when you have a chance to close the game and you’re the closer, you gotta do it.
JoseGuillenSux - October 17, 2009
Lets just blame them both
UCIHalo - October 17, 2009

JoseGuillenSux - October 17, 2009

Halos in DE - October 18, 2009

You pitch A-Rod IN-FUCKING-SIDE! Every scouting report says it. Fuentes put the ball right where Mathis called for it. FUCK!
halofan4life - October 17, 2009

i was about to say the same thing. Mathis made a STUPID call for a ball out over the plate.
fucking pathetic.

halofan4life - October 17, 2009

Clutch - October 18, 2009
Fuentes.
you have LOB because of GREAT pitching.
We have a closer to close it. he didnt do his job, per usual… fuck him and bring in jepsen ASAP, why wait for 2010.
clover_black - October 17, 2009
Vlad didn't do his job.
Match Day 5 - October 17, 2009
He didnt. But this game was won, good pitching beats good batting ANY DAY.
And there you will find you blame.
clover_black - October 17, 2009
Vlad was the epitome of bad batting
he’s in the lineup to knock the crap out of the ball and to make a closer unneccessary. this team was not built to win 1run and 2run games. If we can’t score more than 3 runs a game we don’t deserve to win. Esp. against the Yankees.
Match Day 5 - October 17, 2009
BUT, the game was won with our closer on the mound...
i mean, it can go both ways.. vlad screwed the pooch, but he has been hitting well over .300 for the post season… brian fuentes is pure trouble, has been and will be.
clover_black - October 17, 2009
The game was tied with our closer on the mound.
Match Day 5 - October 17, 2009
i could have sworn brian fuentes gave up a home run when the score was 3-2
could be wrong though. please fill me in.
clover_black - October 17, 2009
They didn't win it. they tied it.
Match Day 5 - October 17, 2009
oh, closer are alotted a run in the post season?
clover_black - October 17, 2009
Fuentes is given one chance
Vlad had, what, 5? How isn’t he more responsible?
Match Day 5 - October 17, 2009
Vlad had it on volume of mistake
Fuentes had it on quality
UCIHalo - October 17, 2009
I'll accept that
Match Day 5 - October 17, 2009
pitching and batting are apples and oranges
clover_black - October 17, 2009

Ha, yeah.

well…ehhhhhhh..that sucks.
clover_black - October 17, 2009

or…. jepsen on arredondos level of shittyness. …fuck it im drunk.
clover_black - October 17, 2009

shiftyeyedgoat - October 17, 2009
i thought i was the only k rod supporter
the blog has turned on him like he’s a leper.
clover_black - October 17, 2009

anaheim angels - October 17, 2009

SenorChuckles - October 17, 2009

chairmanofthebar - October 17, 2009
I don't blame Fuentes
He got a routine fly ball in every professional ball park in America. This stadium is a fucking joke. Kendry Morales would have hit 50 homers if he were playing for the Yankees.
What the fuck is Maicer thinking there? That’s inexcusable.
LA Seitz - October 17, 2009
Then dont throw a fastball up and away
Jam his ass like they had been. Pitch to the strength …….if he has any
Angel Aviator - October 17, 2009
Well, based on that theory
why didn’t Kendry hit at least….1?
The Gooch - October 17, 2009
Small sample size
LA Seitz - October 17, 2009
Same sample size as ARod ....right?
Angel Aviator - October 17, 2009
Still don't buy it
If the park is a joke because of how easy it is to hit a homer, then both teams have the ability to take advantage of it. No Angel did.
The Gooch - October 17, 2009
yeah but the Yankees are built to hit HRs in that park
The Angels are built to hit in Anaheim
Match Day 5 - October 17, 2009
Isn't that what GMs are supposed to do when building teams?
Daniel52 - October 17, 2009
Too bad
you can’t score it as a flyball out. Fuentes wasn’t in any other ballpark, he was at that toilet in the Bronx and should have pitched/pull his head out of his ass accordingly.
Teixeira Who? - October 17, 2009
True. At Angel Stadium that ball doesn't even make the warning track.

Vlad bats where the manager puts him.. He sucked last night and looked terrible.. If Mike doesn’t move him,it isn’t Vlads fault..
He is the RBI guy in the lineup and didn’t do his job,in fact he looked terrible as I have ever seen him…But he is a career 320 hitter and I do like Mikes loyalty, though it may cost the series…
raven191 - October 18, 2009
There were a lot of bad missed opportunities
but if Fuentes hadn’t given up the HR to ARod we wouldn’t be having this conversation.
On the other hand, keeping Vlad in the clean-up spot is killing this series for us. Now is not the time to worry about hurt feelings, drop him down.
The Gooch - October 17, 2009
i don't blame Fuentes either.
i blame Vlad (mostly) and Maicer second.
pathetic showing. absolutely terrible.
they better pull their heads out of their asses if they want to win. time for Mike to rip into the offense.
howiestheman - October 17, 2009
There were many oppurtunities to score runs..Vlad had the bulk of those, but other players had there chances to drive in runs…
Fuentes blew his save chance on a BS HR in a joke of a park…Jeter doesn’t hit a HR in LA either..
raven191 - October 18, 2009
Fuentes.
It’s your job to close. I just don’t trust this guy to close. He’s as big a crap shoot as putting Jepsen out there to close. And at this point I’d rather see Jepsen.
Angels are just plain playing sloppy.
Yankees are playing like they mean it. Hate to see it. But it don’t look good.

when the leadoff guy is A-Rod, and our closer is a fucking gas can? YES!
KingF15h - October 17, 2009
This is actually retarded
No conception of percentages… A lot of ways you can fault Scioscia for this one, but not here.
Spird - October 17, 2009
you're right. Because pitching to him worked out really well
KingF15h - October 17, 2009
It's actually really simple
A-Rod has about a 60% chance at least of making an out there (I’m factoring in Fuentes pitching in that number) and about a 1 in 10 chance at best of hitting a Hr. You put him on first with no one out, he has a 41.7% chance of scoring (maybe slightly less with the hitters coming up, but not much less). A-Rod was also 0-5 in his other AB’s. I guess we should have walked him in those AB’s too.
Spird - October 18, 2009
and fuck percentages
the game is won on the field, not on paper
KingF15h - October 17, 2009
i don't blame Scioscia
I didn’t have a problem with his decisions.
UCIHalo - October 17, 2009
How about the one
where he put Vlad in the clean-up spot
The Gooch - October 17, 2009

although i understand why he did it. this is a tough time to make drastic line-up changes
UCIHalo - October 17, 2009

Batting Vlad 4th while not the best decision, doesnt make Scosica shit
anaheim angels - October 18, 2009

SenorChuckles - October 18, 2009
you didn't have a problem with batting Vlad fourth???
Or pinch hitting GMJ?
KingF15h - October 17, 2009
Giving the bat to GMJ...
that’s inexcusable. that should NEVER have to happen in a playoff game.
JoseGuillenSux - October 17, 2009

UCIHalo - October 17, 2009

Izturis
Vlad-obviously sucked tonight. But him not getting the big hit didn’t cost us the game.
Fuentes-gave up a tying run, so that didn’t cost us the game,
he just didn’t close it.
Izzy-simple force at first. Then probably walk posada. Then deal with Jeter. At least maybe were still watching the game.
So my blame goes to Izzy for the ending on his play. Whatever lead up to that popint I don’t care. We survived the other mistakes but couldn’t survive this one.
At least we can sleep it off, be miserable/happy until mon afternoon. This sucks.

He had one big hit in Boston. He has sucked in the playoffs his entire career and he should never be allowed to bat fourth, but Soth has a fucking hard on for him.

Clutch - October 18, 2009
I guess I don't blame Izzy as much
…because after the colossal failures of Vlad to hit when he had the chance to break the game open and Fuentes to close it when we had the lead it just sort of seemed inevitable that we’d lose eventually. How many chances to blow it and then recover and win can you expect in any one game
The Gooch - October 17, 2009

And the defense choked in the end. All we can do now is win. Our backs against the wall facing a must win from here on out. We faced tougher adversity earlier in the year we made it through that. We can beat these yanks and we will. Let’s bring it to Anaheim and beat some ass!! Ful tonight it’s over with let’s sweep it at home!!

shaqfor3 - October 17, 2009
Blame Guerrero/Abreu
Great game pitched by Saunders and nice relief work by Jepsen, but the 13 LOB by Guerrero/Abreu was terrible. Come on we all knew Fuentes was going to give up that home-run to A-Rod he’s been killing us all year long. Better start looking to trade/sign/ promote (Jepsen) someone to be the new closer next year. But lets still have some faith, their coming home and we still have Weaver/ Kazmir.
310Angel - October 17, 2009
There seem to be two sets of fans here:
#1. People that get down, after a tough loss, calling the series over, when, theoretically, they could still win four out of five games.
#2. People that will be saying in the ninth inning of game four, when their team is down 10-0, and down 3-0 in the series, that there is still hope.
Which one are you?

In all seriousness, Vlad used to be my favorite player and it wasn’t even close. Even with my blinders I realize it is time to drop him down or out. Tonight was a total fiasco for him, even more so than Fuentes who was just following his status quo.

Izzy made a mistake that a fucking LL player woudn't have made
KingF15h - October 17, 2009
I seem to recall a sick play on a Kurt Suzuki grounder
earlier in the season. I think Izturis makes that play in better weather.

he should have gone to first
there was no reason to go to second

mental mistake. MOve on. Unless we can figure out the fucking flux capacitor, we can’t do shit about it.

Fan Since 1981 - October 17, 2009
sincere optimism?
If so, then I approve this message.
halofan4life - October 17, 2009
True
Can’t really complain about losing to a team with a $250 million payroll. The Yankees will absolutely smoke whomever they face in the WS (can you imagine what they’ll do to the likes of Vicente Padilla). It’s too bad the season has to end like this, but given the way things started out 4 days into the season, well, they’ve shown a lot of heart.
The team is going to look a lot different next year and it might be a couple of years before they’re back at this level, but there’s a solid foundation in place.
Oh well.

Angels_48 - October 17, 2009
Izzy screwed up...
but just because he made “the last” screwup doesnt mean he should shoulder the blame… cause that was just a game full of failures for the halos. 3 runs against the yankees doesnt usually win fine ok… but uhhh tonight it was good enough until the 9th… if saunders, jepsen, oliver can take care of business for 8 innings fuentes should be able to butch up and get the freaking job done. NO question. Vlad had a whole lot of LOB failures, but a about half of those came after fuentes shit the bed. lets see how many fielding gaffe’s did aybar have. anyways im just rambling… bottom line is the halos didnt bring their A game to New York.. hope they find it back at the Big A.
BigBangRobbDawgg - October 17, 2009
now that ive gotten shit off my chest... positives...
despite the sloppiness in both games, the Halos were still competitive in each game. clean up the play & i like the angels chances @ home. not giving up yet… and none of you on here should be either.
BigBangRobbDawgg - October 17, 2009
Saunders was in line for Panther if Fuentes saves that

YES IZTURIS FUCKED UP
YES FUENTES BLEW THE GAME
YES VLAD FUCKING SUCKS
BUT THAT BALL IZTURIS THREW ENDED UP RIGHT TO FIGGINS, WITH HAIRSTON ABOUT 3 FEET OFF 3RD HEADING HOME.
AND HE GOT SCARED AND BOBBLED IT AWAY!
THIS GAME COULD STILL BE IN THE 18TH INNING, WITH VLAD UP TO BAT W/ THE BASES LOADED AND ALL THE HOPES AND DREAMS STILL ALIVE, OF A POST SEASON WHERE VLADIMIR GUERRERO ISN’T A CHUMP 95% OF THE TIME.
!
Quinlan's Goofy Swing - October 17, 2009
'Night all
Be back Monday or so if I can stop from being distracted tomorrow!
NOW LET’S GO WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YES! WE! CAN!
CALLING ALL ANGELS, GUYS—GET YOUR HEADS IN THE GAME AND GO PLAY SOME BASE-BALL!
Clutch - October 18, 2009
The series is not over… It is close,we have no room for error and we have likely win all 3 games at home or it is…
I hope the warmer weather brings us some luck, some scoring and better defense…
Right now, everyone is struggling…Vlad gets all the blame b/c he is the 4 hitter, but Figgins,Abreu,Hunter have all not played to potential..
This game got over at like 3 am here, wow was I tired… After the A-Rod homer I said it was over,it was just a matter of time…
Have a good day guys in LA…Let us keep the faith and stay strong,I like Weaver and think he is going to come out strong…We face a little more adversity and come through..
Where is Mark Teixeria….?

Pitchers Blew it Again!
Just when the Angels had all the chances, they self-destructed yet again! Imagine, the announcer mentioned last game that Alex Rodriguez should be pitched inside and of course, low yet, Fuentes did not have the common sense to keep that ball low and inside of Rodriguez. Ervin Santana was horrible too. Imagine, he is asked to throw for a couple of innnings and he cannot even do a half decent job of it! What I don’t understand is when Santana had that horrible first inning he threw, why did not Scioscia yank him and put in Palmer instead. That could have been a huge difference there. Lastly, Vlad showed why he struck out so many times! No plate discipline and he tries to hit each and every bad pitch thrown his way. Two times, he had bases loaded and he just cannot control himself!
JimmyBlue - October 18, 2009
Yanks scored 4 runs in 13 innings at home.......
yeah the pitchers blew it…………
give me a break.
norcaliangelsfan - October 18, 2009
So, Fuentes was Fabulous?
It makes me wonder if we were watching the same game. So, Fuentes blows his save, Santana pitches like crap and our pitchers did a very good job because the Yankees just got 4 runs? They won the game which is what counts! Not excusing Vlad’s lack of plate discipline as he had 2 bases loaded chances to become a champ instead of a chump.
JimmyBlue - October 18, 2009
last time i checked
santana didn’t air mail it or bobble it in the 13th.
Halos in DE - October 18, 2009
Palmer you say?
against the Yankees at their house? No, Santana was the right call and he got the groundball that he wanted at the end.
SenorChuckles - October 18, 2009
but look at the bright side
1. their bullpen is absolutely shot
2. in games 1 and 2 our pitchers stepped up to the rubber and were 99% as good as the yankees
3. once we get back to halos baseball, slick fielding and timely hitting we are okay
Halos in DE - October 18, 2009
Pen is shot?
Joba pitched 0.1 innings, Hughes pitched 0.2 innings, Coke pitched to two batters, Rivera only threw 24 pitches. There has been an off day, making all those guys completely ready to go. Aceves only threw 1.1 and he usually goes for at least 2. The only guy really probably unavailable is Robertson.
GMan83201 - October 18, 2009
i say vlad is BOTG
RISP – come on vlad, this is why the Angels signed you, got it out of your system against red sox – even though recent fan shot says differently
Fuentes – he only pitched 1 inning, and didn’t lose the game
Santana – poor fielding behind you will make the best pitcher look like crap, same with Scott Kazmir recently (the angels haven’t given him run support so he loses close games)
Halos in DE - October 18, 2009
VLAD ALL THE WAY
Some of those swings were absolutely AWFUL! Even by Vlad standards. Rory was even hinting at Vlad’s suckiness during his last at bat. “This is your cleanup hitter, at some point he has to come through, heres the pitch….groundball to second.”
Doctor Wu - October 18, 2009
BOTG=SOSH
Why pitch to A-ROD in the 9th with two bench player due up? Why play Figgy when he’s sucked all postseason?
HALO N BRIMSTONE - October 18, 2009
VladFuentZurus
VladFuentZurus – the trinity of suck . VladFuentZurus works in mysterious ways… and it really sucks.
What a painful game that was!
The Yanks handed that game to them and they blew it.
Hopefully they get their shit together in Anaheim.
jhens76 - October 18, 2009
The Angels have tried every way possible to let the Yanks win this and even with all our help they barely won at home, so i see us sweeping them in Anaheim, then who knows what happens. The only thing i think 99% of us feel is that Vlad needs to be hitting about 7th or 8th because he has never and i mean ever done anything in the post season but be an epic failure!!!
