Final Score in New York: Angels 1, Yankees 4
A night of sloppy fielding from the normally sharp Angels gifted the Yankees enough runs to take Game 1 of the 2009 ALCS. The Angels had the tying run on deck in the 9th, so it is not like they got dominated, in fact, the Yankees were pretty flat all night and a precision defensive outing would have yielded a win.
But just like in the 2002 and 2005 postseason, the Yankees took game 1 of the series form the Angels. John Lackey pitched fantastic, Jason Bulger and Matt Palmer each did the job of holding things in place, but CC Sabathia scattered hits far enough apart from each other to avoid any trouble.
It didn't look like the Angels when Erick Aybar and Chone Figgins looked at each other on a first inning popup instead of looking at the ball. The national broadcast hardly named them as it was so intent on stroking the Yankees. A FOX broadcast truck in the Yankee Stadium parking lot had gallons of lube at the ready should the game have gone into extra innings, but it wasn't necessary, as the Angels threatened but did not score off of Mariano Rivera.
The Angels got a RBI single from Kendry Morales in the 4th inning to score Vladimir Guerrero who had led off the frame with a double that almost cleared the plexiglass centerfield wall. It was that kind of night for the Angels ... a lot of invisible almosts that are now just whisps blowing around the L in the scorebook.

Figgins gets the blame just for continuing to suck
despite that 1st inning gaffe falling squarely on the shoulders of Aybar.
Figgy needs to sit tomorrow after going 0-16 in the playoffs. Simply inexcusable.

0 for 16 is a crime and beyond inexcusable
UCIHalo - October 16, 2009
Why blame?
He’ll be raising the trophy with the rest of the team.
Downing Rules - October 16, 2009
Figgins is to blame for everything..
Sure hes great during the regular season versus bad pitchers but in the playoffs…chokes! thats why he is never a true lead off hitter.
ihatefiggins - October 16, 2009
Yes
Why does everything BAD that happens to us in the Playoffs always include Figgins in the picture somehow??? Figgins is bad luck for us in the playoffs if you ask me. Who wants to bet he will never be benched and will continue to suck.

howiestheman - October 16, 2009
4.6 ERA! Gasp! How will we ever win!
AJ Burnett’s era is 4.04 which isn’t that much better. Burnett also led the leauge with walks allowed with 97 given up. Saunders also had an ERA of 3.41 last year and won his last 7 decisions this year.

piss poor tonight. he was lucky he only got rung with 4
bruinbrah - October 16, 2009
Yeah. Seemed like he was behind on every batter.
However, only 1 or 2 ER, you can’t nail it on him.
red floyd - October 16, 2009
Lackey was awful in pitch conservation
and giving up chopper singles, but for hte most part, he stranded runners, got key outs and made quality pitches.
NO PART OF THIS GAME IS HIS FAULT.
If the three errors — and the Aybar/Figgy “hit” — are reversed, Lackey gives up 1 run, max and pitches later into the game.
He didn’t pitch well by WHIP or pitch count, but he pitched well enough to win when it’s not nearly snowing outside.
shiftyeyedgoat - October 16, 2009
why does ken rosenthal sound like a computer program reading a book?
anyways, Figgi gets the blame.

unless he pitches 4 games, i’m not worried
That game reminded me of most of the angels’ recent playoff losses, bad D, bad hitting, and just a total no show in general.

Figgins also clear as day said
“AYBAR” on that pop up … he was the only one who said anything, which obviously was too complex for aybar to actually comprehend given the ear muffs
Quinlan's Goofy Swing - October 16, 2009
I saw that too
Why didn’t he say something that didn’t sound so much like “I got it?”
rspencer - October 16, 2009
"Ay-bar" or "EYE-got it?"
or “MINE” I’d like to hear the post-game comments, as I think that Figgy called for it, yet you think that he told Aybar to get it.
Although, in my limited playing time, the only time you yell is when you are calling to GET THE BALL, not let someone else get it.
Downing Rules - October 16, 2009
The shortstop has makes the call...
…and Scioscia reminded Aybar of that at the end of the inning.
sothball - October 16, 2009
I wonder if Erick's underoos played a part in not hearing Fig?
Downing Rules - October 16, 2009
Maybe...
but the ball landed 4 feet in front of Aybar. Embarrassing.
sothball - October 16, 2009
When you put it that way. . .
it makes perfect sense. I guess I was just trying to make the most possible sense out of the situation. If Figgy did call for the ball, and then did nothing but stare stupidly at Aybar, that was failure of massive proportions.
rspencer - October 16, 2009
QUESTION:
Have the Yankees actually earned a victory in this postseason? The snippets I caught from the Twins series indicate that the Twins’ mistakes led to giving the series to the Yankees. I could be wrong, though.
Downing Rules - October 16, 2009
Again...
Even without the defensive mistake the Yankees have two runs. You can blame the D if you want, but really it was a lack of offense that was the major issue.
GMan83201 - October 16, 2009
We looked exactly like the Twins tonight.

figgifig - October 16, 2009
No, the evil Twins.
;P
Downing Rules - October 16, 2009
Disagree on one point
Flawless defense wouldn’t have made the difference. The Yanks had 2 runs that scored without errors/that “single” that dropped between FIggins and Aybar. It would have been 2-1.
GMan83201 - October 16, 2009
who knows the score if no errors
different mindset after making them. and who cares we lost…move on. game 2 is tomorrow.
figgifig - October 16, 2009
Yep...
the game would have proceeded EXACTLY the same had Aybar made that catch.
NOT!
Downing Rules - October 16, 2009
I conted that Lackey would have had a 1-run CG had Aybar made that catch
Instead, the hot-headed Texan melted down mentally and didn’t make it. How do you like that? ;)
Downing Rules - October 16, 2009
contend.
Downing Rules - October 16, 2009
+1
You could see on some of the replays how ticked off Lackey was with his teammates. Then he made a throwing error himself. I agree—mental meltdown.
hbhalofan - October 16, 2009
Agreed, but he was still far from good.
9 H, 3 BB, behind on nearly every batter.
shiftyeyedgoat - October 16, 2009
C'mon ... you've been watching Lackey for a while, just like me...
I know that if something happens behind him, he gets visibly shaken (he was shown SCREAMING like a douche toward Aybar and Figgy after they let that ball drop) and then he melts down shortly thereafter. Granted, he did fairly well considering, but I think he would have done a lot better had that play been made.
Yes, this is purely my stupid opinion.
Downing Rules - October 16, 2009
Nono, I totally agree with you that Lackey would've gone farther into the game,
But I’m saying, that play notwithstanding, he was NOT looking good early on (see my first batter analysis of Lackey, after an 8 pitch single to Jeter), and continued to struggle, BUT he was getting out of jams.
The defense wasn’t doing their jobs, but to say Lackey had “1 ER, CG” stuff tonight is most likely not true.
shiftyeyedgoat - October 16, 2009
ok.
gotcha.
Downing Rules - October 16, 2009
Lackey Needs to Concentrate on His Pitching
The trouble with Lackey is he acts like a complete new pitcher with no experience whatsoever. Even if the outfielders made some mistakes, he pretty much put himself in the hole and no one else should be blamed for it. How many pitches did he throw in the early innings? While, Sabathia was coasting and throwing few pitches, he was struggling to come out of innings. His pitch count was so high, he was done pretty much by the first couple of innings. Worst of all, he was a big cry baby over the dropped ball by Figgins/Aybar! A good pitcher concentrates on his pitches which he has control over!
JimmyBlue - October 17, 2009
Well...
the Yanks would have been up 1-0 anyway, and the Angels only scored one run. You can argue that pop-up affected the offense but I doubt it. The theme of the game still was that CC was dominant and shut down the Angels offense.
Depending on which AJ Burnett shows up there could be a good chance for LA to steal one. I sorta figured the Yanks would take this one and that the real chance to swing the series was game 2.
I’m a Yankee fan, by the way. I do my best to be respectful and just offer an alternative view. Let me know if I get offensive.
GMan83201 - October 16, 2009
Thanks.
I personally didn’t go to “Over the Monster” after the three Angel victories. Kind of a sensitive timing thing, with the wounds all fresh, you know?
Downing Rules - October 16, 2009
I guess the point I'm trying to drive across
is that yeah, CC looks like the real deal. However, at worst you see him three times. There’s a good chance to steal one tomorrow if Bad AJ shows up, and a split in the first two games puts all the pressure on the Yanks.
GMan83201 - October 16, 2009
Did you hear Scioscia's quote yesterday?
It was funny and I paraphrase:
“if there are enough rain delays, we will see CC Sabathia seven times!”

Two for Three so far,
but the most important is the one where CC gets the edge.
I’m blaming snowy conditions and New York sucking in general, but all-in-all, the game was only worrisome because of how bad the ANGELS were, not how GOOD the Yanks were.
shiftyeyedgoat - October 16, 2009
I wouldn't count
on there being very many more errors. But yeah, I don’t mean to be harsh but that was not a good showing. I hope the Yanks are aware that this was sort of a fluke.

Blazers fan: Portland born and bred. Love living in the Pacific Northwest.
Packers fan: my initials are “GB.” When I was 8 I watched football with my dad and saw “GB” in a little box score. I decided at that point they were my favorite team and see no reason to go back.
GMan83201 - October 16, 2009
Yuck to all three.
I don’t know how you can even count the Portland Jail-blazers as a sports franchise.
shiftyeyedgoat - October 16, 2009
The real reason:
when I was in kindergarten I met Buck Williams. To this day he is still my favorite all-time player. The next week my dad took me to a game to reward me for good behavior in school (I was not very often well-behaved), and I’ve been hooked ever since.
BTW, I won’t be one of those morons that gets in a fight over Lakers vs. Blazers. I’m just happy they aren’t the Jail Blazers anymore and actually have a watchable and likable team.

Lackey Sucked!
Not to absolve the fielding errors but, John Lackey sucked which is a big part of the reason that the Angels lost. In the playoffs, pitching counts more than ever. Remember NY has a lot of good hitters. How are the Angels going to beat them without holding their batters down? We beat Boston because we held their batters down. The Yanks did a better job holding our batters down in the first game. Saunders better bring his A game tomorrow.

It boils down to pitching
Whoever pitches better wins, plain and simple. Today was the Yanks day. Tomorrow, it could be the Angels. Part of the Angels problem is their pitchers choke and get nervous in the post season. I thought when they beat Boston in the last playoff series, they got the jitters out but, apparently, not! The best pitchers will find a way to win especially in the post season. This is a seven game series so, anything is still possible. Hopefully, the pitchers do their job tomorrow. The Angels cannot afford to fall behind 2-0. Let us make it 1-1.
JimmyBlue - October 16, 2009

KingF15h - October 16, 2009
Torii and Lackey are the team leaders
and they both made errors. Maybe Mickey Flatcher needs to do something.
Downing Rules - October 16, 2009
Those were completely unrelated statements,
but both of them true.
The leaders lost us the game, and Mickey Hatcher needs to calm his Hackers down and SIT ON A FUCKING PITCH.
shiftyeyedgoat - October 16, 2009
Figgy sits on all 3 pitches.
This isnt about mickey hatcher..this is about grown ass professional athletes playing like horeshit against CC.
What the hell is hatcher gonna do in a week?
clover_black - October 16, 2009
7 hours of BP / day.
shiftyeyedgoat - October 16, 2009
easy there...
while i agree with your points, I just was asking hatcher to throw some chairs and say “WTF is wrong with you guys???” Hopefully to get those limp carcasses to come back to life.
Downing Rules - October 16, 2009
oh i agree, mickey should pull some old-man rage on the players...
my semi-drunken post wastn directed at you..or anyone for that matter..just frustrating..and blaming the umps, blaming mickey, blaming ugly yankee fans…it gets on my nerve when you have guys like figgi go out there and act like they dont know what baseball is.
i’ll forget all of this if figgy goes 4-4 tomorrow and the angels win. Short term memory is great.
clover_black - October 16, 2009
speaking of limp carcasses...
our Rams are getting their first win Sunday, so that’s something to look forward to
KingF15h - October 16, 2009
Not when Torry Holt is going to have this line:
7 catches 184 yards 2TD
Downing Rules - October 16, 2009
Not against Jax, no offense.
SenorChuckles - October 16, 2009
That's my biggest problem with Figgy
It’s like he’s just sitting there waiting for them to walk him. He hardly ever swings the fucking bat!
As much as I like Bobby, he did the very same thing tonight. When it’s close with two strikes you gotta protect the plate guys!
KingF15h - October 16, 2009
YES!

Game 2
I feel good about the angels chances in game 2. Joe is gonna be as fresh as ever and burnett is more vulnerable at this point in his career as he ever has been. Halos just need to make the most of each pitch and get some baserunners. I have to laugh that “most faithful fans in baseball” couldn’t even come close to selling out there stadium in an ALCS game. 95% filled at Yankee stadium I’m sorry, that’s pathetic. Compared to our last home game which was 99.9% filled. Angels win game 2 5-4, pray for some sunshine!
Broncangelus1 - October 16, 2009
Not trolling here
but just saying, they did sell out. 49,000 plus is selling out. The Yankees led the majors in attendance this season. And thats with those insane prices, and the recession. That sounds pretty “faithful” to me.
nyyrocks29 - October 17, 2009
yeah if you want to call 2500 open seats a sell out
I’m sorry but thats not a sellout. And using the “high priced” seats and the “recession” as an excuse, thats ridiculous, its the freakin championship series. Last I checked theres about 20 million people in NY city, we’ve got about 3 million here in orange county and we had no problem leaving barely 10 seats open at our stadium. And also, no the Yankees didn’t lead the lead league in attendance, the dodgers did.
Broncangelus1 - October 17, 2009
I meant overall
not at home. and the home was pretty close. The reason the Yankees did not lead the majors in attendance at home was the insane prices, the smaller stadium, and the recession. The Yankees couldn’t have predicted that the economy would crash, and the economy completely crashed after the Yankees set their prices. And they couldn’t change them, because some people had already bought them. The prices will be reset next year, and they will start selling out every game again.
And again, it was a sellout today. 49000 plus is a sellout. The seats were filled. It was the standing room tickets that weren’t all sold. And they don’t count toward the actual tickets (don’t know why, but they don’t).
nyyrocks29 - October 17, 2009
what rock are you living under
lol at overall.
and the recession has been going on for some time.
and of course they would only sell out after getting a win under them.
RedAces - October 17, 2009
Lots of FAIL today
hopefully we won’t see that tomorrow
JoseGuillenSux - October 16, 2009
nobody freak out
it’s one game. this series is just starting.
yeah, we looked bad, but we’ll bounce back.
i say we win tomorrow, take games 3 & 5 in Anaheim, and win it in 6.
howiestheman - October 16, 2009
What worries me...
…is that the Yankee offense didn’t do much except hit singles. We will definitely bounce back (aka “turn the page”) but will they not also hit better? And is Saunders well-rested or well-rusted at this point?
BigSnyan - October 16, 2009
3 weeks of off-time?
In a hitter’s paradise against a team that will only slump for so long? What could possibly go wrong??
shiftyeyedgoat - October 16, 2009
Hopefully nothing!
Let’s see how it goes!
Clutch - October 16, 2009
do you think CC’s fat helped him keep warm up there?
FirstTwoThird - October 16, 2009
So I just finished watching the game off my DVR
Questions I have.
Did Mathis even watch how the Angels hit Papelbum in the playoffs???? He has a better fastball than Lackey but when that’s all you’re thowing any Major League team can hit it. He started the game off only throwing 4 seam and 2 seam fastballs. It was inane and as a result Jeter and Damon got on to start the game. Once he started mixing in curves he was much better.
Did Mathis notice how A-Rod tried to take him out at the plate???? Because he was practically bending over when Tex was standing on the first base line waiting to tag him out. Fuck his shit up Mathis don’t just let him tag you, that’s BS, you have all the momentum and he’s standing there like a sitting duck, lower your shoulder and put him on the ground.
How apparent does it have to be that Figgins sucks in the playoffs to actually get Maicer and Kendrick in the lineup?
MH252525 - October 16, 2009
You're talking about a 15 AB sample size
Holy crap, Figgins got on base more than any other player in the regular season. Let him do his thing.
Gorbachav5 - October 16, 2009
Yea I'd agree but
the Angels are going to be facing lefties a ton this series which Maicer has shown in a ton more than 15 abs that he hits better than Figgy.
MH252525 - October 16, 2009
figgins has hit for shit all year long against lefties
in his playoff career, he has habitually been horrible at the plate and shaky in the field.
he has a history of sucking, and it shines in his stat line in the post season.
in the same way ppl say some guys are clutch, I will say figgins sucks in fucking october.
18/103, .175 average
33 k’s, 3 walks
FOR A LEADOFF HITTER WHO PLAYS IN A POWER HITTING POSITION.
He’s hitting .237 this year against lefties, including his 0/8 against lefties this postseason.
Quinlan's Goofy Swing - October 16, 2009
this
hey where did you get those stats. I was using baseball referrence.com but noticed it only had him at 99 at bats?
But this is a huge sample size and if not do we give him another decade to prove himself?
RedAces - October 16, 2009
my guess is they havent updated for tonight's 0/4
i just added his numbers up by checking the game log … maybe i miss counted too?
Quinlan's Goofy Swing - October 16, 2009
no i think your right.
Well at least closer than they are. yeah it is not showing tonights updates yet. But this is a serious point. How long are we gonna wait around. I was thinking this before the post season started and am sick of it at this point. Sosh is a patient man but when is enough?
RedAces - October 16, 2009
The sample size is much greater than 15AB...
In 103 postseason at-bats, figgy is a HORRIBLE 175 batting average and a 206 OBP. WOOF! Sit his ass DOWN.
Downing Rules - October 17, 2009
Figgins just suck period...
I never liked figgins to be honest..He only hits well against badd pitching. When playoffs comes around against good pitching hes no where to be found on base. A little guy like him will just get over powered, because opposing pitchers know he cant hit a home run. So thats why we will fail unless who find a solution quick…Think of his past post season efforts? I guess Figgins never improved much.
ihatefiggins - October 16, 2009
you've NEVER liked figgie?
…oh wait…just read your sig
nevermind
hittheg - October 17, 2009
Gallons of lube at the ready?
Jeez, Rev, give it a rest. Not everything is a slight at the Angels or worship of the Yankees/Red Sox. And even if it is, what the hell does it matter? Isn’t the actual baseball game a heck of a lot more interesting?
Gorbachav5 - October 16, 2009
not tonight it wasn’t….
firebird81 - October 16, 2009
What the hell does it matter?
I had to listen to them suck Yankee cock for 3 hours. I’m gonna mention it.
Rev Halofan - October 16, 2009
wonder if their hands had blisters and friction burns?
but then.. that’s what the lube is for right? ;)
HalosFanInNorCal - October 17, 2009
no its not at all...
I had to mute the TV from the 4th inning on…I couldnt listen to that shit anymore. terrible.
dr-awkward - October 17, 2009
I muted as soon as the power button was pressed.
Downing Rules - October 17, 2009
What a stinker
Get ’em tomorrow, I guess. Weather permitting.
By the way, did anyone notice that this was just the second game ever at the New Yankee Bandbox without a home run?
Suboptimal - October 16, 2009
Figgins = automatic out
figgins, vlad, mathis/napoli pretty much automatic outs..which is pretty sad. they need to stop listening to mickey mouse hatcher and learn to hit.
ihatefiggins - October 16, 2009
Vlad hit a double that was nearly a homerun.
firebird81 - October 16, 2009
the double was cool
but i think we all saw how horrible he was when thrown fastballs.
something is wrong when he is as late as mathis is when swinging at a 91 mph fastball.
they just have to beat everyone other than cc, which frankly, doesn’t seem like that hard of a feat.
Playoff strike zones will doom Burnett.
Keep the yanks in the ballpark, and you can beat them.
Game 2 is huge, as Saunders was #2 in homers allowed in the AL, so he is mistake prone, and we see how he enjoys getting into jams, let’s hope his mistakes occur w/ nobody on base.
Quinlan's Goofy Swing - October 16, 2009
i agree that he is underperforming
And keeping his eye on the ball when he is swinging might help. But he is not the problem.
RedAces - October 16, 2009
Vlad has been like the only Angel getting some knocks consistantly.
We haven’t had much offense but he has been timely.
RedAces - October 16, 2009
did no one else see this?
Watch A-roid durring the play at the plate.
After the intitial contact, which was fine, that prick smacks Mathis in the face with his right hand and tries to hold his head down. Time to go native on him – a little headhunting for that asshole.
I thought this would be the main theme of this thread. I just got here after DVR and daughter’s weekend computer-time. If this has been discussed elsewhere please enlighten me.
hittheg - October 16, 2009
didnt see it
surprised he didn’t slap though
RedAces - October 17, 2009
i saw it
Most of the fans where I was saw it. We all know alex is a dirty and tained player too. We also thought that we were watching a yankee’s home telecast on fox. Both of the commetators were just talking non-stop about how good the yankees are.
ihatefiggins - October 17, 2009
Yep
I saw it too! And I kept yelling about it everytime they showed the replay! Add it to the other things he’s been caught doing. What a scumbag. Hope he gets knocked on his ass for it.
NJinHB - October 17, 2009 via mobile
the play at the plate
but also looking at how he hit Mathis, he should definitely be glad that A-Rod hit him like a little girl. He tried throwing his arms at him…. if he leads with his shoulder like Erstad did in Atlanta then Jeff would have been in a world of hurt.
MH252525 - October 17, 2009
I didn't see anything
I’m not being naive because Im a Yankees fan, but I don’t honestly think he did anything wrong. I saw him run over Mathis, flip over him (which is a result of running over him), and then go back over and slam his hand on home plate in anger. I didn’t see him touch Mathis intentionally trying to hurt him. If he did, wouldn’t you think Mathis would have noticed? Wouldn’t you think the umps would have noticed? There would have been words exchanged and possibly a bench clearing brawl. I don’t think anything happened intentionally
Give the guy a break. He’s had a great season and he’s a different person this year. If any other player did that you’d say it was some accident. Why do some people feel the need to bash Alex Rodriguez any chance they get?
nyyrocks29 - October 17, 2009
A-Rod / changed man = Naive
And we bash cause he is and always will be a lil b****.
RedAces - October 17, 2009 via mobile
Even though I found a bunch of Angels Fans in Chicago
The Halos didn’t live up to the billing. The offense better show up for Game 2. A split would be very satisfying :)
trojanangelfan - October 17, 2009 via mobile
we better show up tomorrow
it was a poor team effort from the start.
Figgins and Abreu need to swing the bat. WTF??
dan73962 - October 17, 2009
Figgins Post Season Stats Starting from 2004
From 2004-Present with 103 At Bats including todays performance, He only managed to produce18 Hits, with only 11 runs scored and 33 strike outs. For a horrible post season batting average of .182 (baseball-reference.c@m). More reason to bench him.

The entire shitty offense
with the exception of Morales (big surprise).
Still, I have to vote for Figgy for just about every reason listed above. He sucks right now and the Angels are giving every douche bag at ESPN reason to lube each other up in celebration for picking the Yankees.
We’re playing for so much more than just the ALCS. We’re playing to shut up every band wagon fan in Southern California, every east coast biased motherfucker at Fox and ESPN and Adenhart (who probably should have come first on my list).
Teixeira Who? - October 17, 2009
But we're not playing to shut Adenhart up...
Might want to clarify that there?

What is the village of Anaheim’s relation to Los Angeles, anyway? Just wondering because, outside of the Disney bubble, your team’s name makes very little sense to the world. I just call you people “Anaheim.” Is this alright?

Thank you for being the stereotypical New Yorker with all the hate in your profile. (It’s worth noting that The Angels began in Los Angeles, so it can be seen as a nod to our past. Do your research.) Regardless, I think I can speak for the majority of Angels fans when I say that we first hated the name until we saw how much it pissed every obnoxious fan off (i.e. Yankees and Dodgers). Now we love it for that reason alone (at least I sure as hell do).
I hope you’re not a Jets or Giants fan…
