Final Score in Fenway Park: Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 7, Boston Red Sox 6
If you tuned in for an exciting baseball game, you wouldn't know it by the saddened sound of NESN announcer Don Orsillo, pouting a mumble of would've-could've-should've plaudits to his beaten and bruised Red Sox. Tell the equally tin-eared Buck Martinez that no matter how much lube he warms up for Clay Buchholz, the Angels did it.
In dramatic fashion against Jonathan Papelbon, baseball's 2nd best closer, the Angels scored 3 runs in the top of the 9th inning to stun a Fenway Park crowd of smug and entitled chowds into deadened mute agonizing silence. And it is going to be a long cold winter of silence. Maybe Red Sox owner John Henry can get Dave Henderson to throw out the first heating bill of winter for his lonely mansion as he bitterly relives the TEAM OF THE DECADE destroying his mythological masterpiece in the final Fenway game of the decade.
Monday will be the 23-year anniversary of the fabled Donnie Moore Game. But it will be the first day of the rest of the franchise's life!
Genius manager Terry Francona walked Torii Hunter to get to Vladimir Guerrero and for every idiot who whines about taking the first pitch, Vlad swung for your ignorance and dropped a base hit into Centerfield to give the Angels THE lead. The rally started with two outs and TWO strikes to Erick Aybar. Four minutes later the previously untouchable Papelbon had surrendered three runs and the lead.

Rev Halofan...
Congrats to all Angels fans. The Angels outplayed the sox through and through and they deserved the sweep. Congrats on a solid divisional victory.
That being said… Rev Halofan, you handled the victory with a lack of class that I would expect from only you. I used to hate Yanks fans and Jets fans the most. But since finding your blog I have channeled all that anger solely at you. You represent the LAA Angels fanbase with loathing, jealousy, anger and childish mockery. Your mother should be ashamed. You clearly enjoy the Red Sox loss more than the Angels victory. A true fan would celebrate the performance of his players rather than take the time to call another teams’ fans “smug” and “entitled”, let alone while declaring his own team the “team of the decade.” You sir are a hypocrite. The fans of your team deserve better than you.
adubson - October 12, 2009
Ha! We ALL enjoyed the Red Sox loss at least as much as the Angels victory precisely because of the smug entitlement
of the Red Sox fans, not to mention the biased reporting and announcing that we had to put up with for this series.
Your team was the Wild Card because we beat the Texas Rangers for you, and you didn’t bother to send a thank you card.

A huge load has been lifted
In 1986 my father was stationed in Brunswick Maine and I was only 18 at the time and I was talkiing alot of crap to all the Sox fans. When Dave Henderson hit that home run, the next day at school was probably the worst day in my life. The reason I am sharing this is because IT FEELS SO FUCKING GOOD to know that them assholes got it back at them. I love Karma. Go Angels.
RIP Nick

And when Fuentes got the second strike the door opened with no one out I got some chills and the first thing that came to my head was Nick coming onto the field to help us finish of the Red Sox, the 1st team we played after his passing. And then I scroll down and read your Post and I felt the chills again.
RIP Nick we are ding this for you! but please continue to be a part of it like when you tripped Blueberries in the outfield on Friday to get us the nice lead and when you came in to help us clinch today.

I am embarrassed to admit I nearly gave up there and was quite pessimistic.
I’d like to chalk it up to being traumatized from the previous series’ against BOS (and even the 2005 job after Eddings), and if they hadn’t come back, it very well could have been over.
But now, with this—I WILL NEVER DOUBT THIS TEAM AGAIN!!!!!!!!
DON’T STOP BELIEVING! (Fuck you, I like this version better.)

I was screaming like a woman on the 4th floor of a house on fire and the stairs just collapsed.
Seriously, I am glad the neighbors on that side of our house were not home or the cops would have come looking for murder victims.
opiejeanne - October 11, 2009
I was screaming out in front of ESPN Zone in Downtown Disney...
no voice left from yelling in Games 1 and 2. Yet, I still found a way to scream when Vladdy put us on top.
Downing Rules - October 11, 2009
Was there a crowd there with you? Awesome either way.
We went out to lunch after the gamed ended and this old guy wearing a well-worn Angels cap gave me a thumbs up, then he and his wife came over to our table and talked about how great the game was, and how terrible the coverage was.
opiejeanne - October 11, 2009
I was by myself from the 6th to 8th...
then a bunch of other Angel fans stopped to watch the rally. About 30 were there at the end.
Downing Rules - October 11, 2009
I remember walking out of Disneyland and there was an Angels rally in Downtown Disney, in 2002. That was so much fun.
opiejeanne - October 11, 2009
I had annual passport in 2002...
and I saw the team in their celebration on Main Street … that was really special.
Downing Rules - October 11, 2009
We had annual passes too that year, but I didn't know about the celebration on Main Street for some reason.
Heard about it afterwards. I watched the parade on tv, at the urging of my parents because they thought there might be rioting. In Anaheim. I laughed, but I went to visit them instead.

when they were walking Hunter, I was saying to myself that they were not making the right play there, regardless of the numbers this season. the thing about Vlad is that you never know what you’re going to get with the guy except that he will probably make contact with a bunch of balls during the at bat. but yes, he drives you nuts sometimes with his hacking style- in this case, he drove us nuts in a good way!!

The moment Bobby was up with 2 outs and he was grinning
I knew something special was about to happen. Just his presence in the lineup I believe got Figgins to finally get on base. When Chone was held at 3rd when he would have made the tying run had me a bit nervous. Walking Torii I thought was brilliant because of Vlad’s free swinging. But when I saw Vlad step up to the plate, All I was Yelling was SWING AT THE FIRST PITCH SWING AT THE FIRST PITCH, and the rest was CELEBRATION !!!!
There was something confident all along during this game. And it took a little while to get it done but we got it done !!!!!!

and sleep with it tonight, well, at least the 9th inning after 2 outs.
Where’s the dude saying Francona is a better manager?

thanks to my 3 week old son joining me for the last half inning.
fresh start v. the yankees, which a few of the hitters will definitely use to their advantage
Quinlan's Goofy Swing - October 11, 2009
O.K., So when we get down against the skanks, let's still realize that Figgy, or Vladdy or who else can save the day.

Quinlan's Goofy Swing - October 11, 2009
Funny enough, that may be the way to get to Paps. We nailed him first pitch not
once but twice, Rivera did it then Vladdy. It goes against all logic, but I guess sometimes you have to do the oddball thing against a really good closer.

TSamn15 - October 11, 2009
really frustrating huh?
They give us small victory and then cut away to FUCKING SEINFELD? It’s like just a little catharsis was given to the fans…
honestly though I think that the TBS team was poorly suited to take on the barrage of champagne… they might have had little faith in the angels and didn’t bring the camera covers to the game to protect from the liquids… DID YOU SEE THAT ONE CAMERAMAN WITH A GLAD BAG ON HIS CAMERA? WAY TO GO HALOS… so happy i stayed home for this game. the silence on the tube was absolutely serene
BigBangRobbDawgg - October 11, 2009
Fucking awesome
Two outs, two runs down, bases clear, and all of a sudden the Boner has lost the game. Just willing the Red Sox announcers, I mean, TBS’s announcers were reminding you that Papelbon is Mariano Rivera 2.0 with a 0.00 ERA in October. Vlad barely had time to wipe Francona’s spit off his face before he shot the first pitch into centerfield. But if you’d rather pitch to one of the best hitters of the last 15 years instead of Torii Hunter, I guess you take it, right Terry?
Postseason “choker” Guerrero went 4-for-10 with two walks in the series. Big Pimpin’ David Ortiz went 1-for-12 with four strikeouts. Good thing the Red Sox had all that historically clutch postseason hitting on their side. The media wasn’t about to let you forget about it. You can suck it, East Coast Media Elite.
Bring on the Yankees.

we need to convince Figgy that this is NOT THE PLAYOFFS. If he can be hypnotized into believing it is just the regular season, he might perform as he normally does — igniting the offense and wreaking havoc on the basepaths. Otherwise, it’s “O-fer Figgins” come playoff time.

Great FREAKING GAMEEE!
o yea, F all you fake angel fans that were asking about tomorrrows game time, and saying game over after the 8th. If you knew anything about the angels you would know never to understimate the heart of the champion, especially these angels with their never say die attitude!
You guys are welcom to get back on the bandwagon but just remember KEEP THE FAITH ALIVE!

Unbelievable
OK…..I have been reading these commentaries for some time…..but now finally I went and signed up on SB Nation because I just had to comment. I have been an Angel fan for their entire history……and today’s game just has to be perhaps the SWEETEST moment of all…..to put to bed that f…g Red Sox “hex”……payback is so sweet.
Well …. all the above comments have pretty much said it…..I have laughed at some….but I know the Angels are a class organization and team, and they will calmly go on and do what they gotta do. I am looking forward to an all-LA series….which I know the East Coast media will try to ignore.
GO HALOS!!!!!

Angels were scheduled to leave airport at 8 ET / 5 PST
should be home by 1130 pst
dunno which airport but i’m betting lax
Vlad Dracul - October 11, 2009
why not john wayne?
smaller airport, closer to the stadium
anaheim angels - October 11, 2009
Probably the likely one.
you’re right.
Vlad Dracul - October 11, 2009
I would assume that they would want a direct flight.
No direct flights from Boston to JWA
3rd Echelon - October 11, 2009
Did not know that
Also, doesn’t SNA have a curfew or something?
they don’t fly after like 10 pm because they don’t want to disturb residentials or something?
Vlad Dracul - October 11, 2009
Charter flight.
opiejeanne - October 11, 2009
I am pretty sure they use a charter service.
opiejeanne - October 11, 2009
Are charters exempt?
Maybe it’s not true but isn’t SNA air space locked down after a certain time because of noise ordinance.
Vlad Dracul - October 11, 2009
Dunno, but the place is a morgue after 10pm. I've been on a lot of flights that landed about that time of night.
opiejeanne - October 11, 2009
Probably because they close the airport at night. It is not a 24 hour airport.
Stirrups - October 11, 2009
Delta Airlines is their charter
and JWA (known as SNA to us pilots) doesn’t have a “curfew” per se, the control tower just stops operating around 10PM
3rd Echelon - October 11, 2009
Gotcha. Thanks
Vlad Dracul - October 11, 2009
My bet wiill a Delta charter flight from BOS to LAX... it's a standard 757 or A320
with Delta livery so it’ll look like any other Delta flight.
3rd Echelon - October 11, 2009
They never fly to LAX. If they are past curfew, they divert to Ontario.
Downing Rules - October 12, 2009
Sorry didn't mean to sound concieted there..
I learned to fly at JWA so I’m always there. You do get a lot of celeb sightings there (more than LAX) because it’s where most private charters operate. About a month ago, I was on the flight line and saw Tiger Woods getting out of sweet Lear Jet. Sweet!
3rd Echelon - October 11, 2009
Could land at Ontario just as easily.
firebird81 - October 11, 2009

But, but, but… we “payed” all that money.

3rd Echelon - October 11, 2009
God i love the Angels
UpStream15 - October 11, 2009
I want the Yankees
Nothing better than making the league’s two marquee franchises suffer. Plus, if the Angels face the Twins, that will have meant that Minny somehow won 3 straight games after having been on the verge of elimination, which would require insane momentum. Factor in that damn dome, which is scientifically proven to win WS games, and no thank you. That said, wouldn’t mind a 4-5 game NYY-MN series to give us just enough to time to rest and set our rotation.
pantsfucious - October 11, 2009
Don't worry about the rotation.
John Lackey will have his normal rest at the least for game 1, and everyone else falls in line. Our starters did so well against Boston that the bullpen is certainly not worn out. I’m sure the Angels are ready to get back on the field and back to the flag flying business.
RallyMonkey5 - October 11, 2009
Funny thing
Roger Lodge from AM 830 bet Anaheim Ducks player Ryan Whitney that if the Angels beat the Red Sox, Ryan would have to buy lunch at a restaurant of his choice and show up in a speedo.

All I need is a miracle
I heard that song over the radio as I woke up Thursday morning. I always liked that song, which came out in 1985 (would be more perfect if it was 1986). I didn’t hit the snooze bar immediately, which is my habit, but listened to the whole song as it made me feel like good fortune was in the air. On Friday, I went to lunch at a Quiznos in DC, and while I was eating, this song came over their sound system again. Two Angel wins later, I knew I couldn’t let another Angel game start without hearing the song. So I listened to it one more time, and did we ever get a miracle.

2nd Favorite Angels Game Ever
Behind G6 of the 02 WS. What a fantastic game, and when they walked Hunter, after nearly having heart attacks on Figgy and Aybar’s very different AB’s, I just KNEW Guerrero had to respond. He wouldn’t bomb it into the Monster, but surely he’d square up and make them pay, right?
I hate Buck Martinez so bad. Calling it a tie game, misidentifying players, his annoying, reedy voice – he took some of the fun out of the series.
It must be hard not having any No. 1 starters, only having four quality starters but no dominant pitchers, having an imploding bullpen, no power in our lineup, blah blah blah. It’s hard winning with such a terrible team, but we always manage.
Anyone else notice TBS record a strike as a run for the Red Sox? It went from 7-6 to 7-7 to 6-7 to 7-7 to 7-6 in the ninth.
Kernel - October 11, 2009
Yes I saw that but figured they had a shit attack when Boston was on verge of elimination
Vlad Dracul - October 11, 2009
There were technical gaffes the during the series
When Izzy hit a single up the middle in game 2 to break the tie, TBS flashed “End of the 7th” in the upper corner of the screen. And I won’t go into detail about the insipid broadcasters they hired for this ALDS. TBS is incompetent. They are not qualified to broadcast baseball and should have that right revoked.
XYZ123 - October 11, 2009
Nice. Try again. There were technical gaffes during the series.
Sigh. Guess I should work for TBS.

hotef - October 11, 2009
Awesome ALCS
On one hand I’d much prefer the Twins, but to go through the Red Sox and Yankees would be MUCH more satisfying than beating up on the wounded Twinkies.
I mean, after we take the Yanks out back, what’s left? An NL team? It’s like an after-dinner mint at that point.
Kernel - October 11, 2009
Yankees are a little scary.
Angels just bopped an arch nemesis.
What makes us think they’re not capable of doing same to us? :x
Vlad Dracul - October 11, 2009
The fact that we're a kick ass team, riding a magical high with level heads.
The Yankees did NOT look half as good as the Angels in their ALDS series, and the Angels brand of baseball overcomes the Yankees style of baseball. If you look at the Twins series, the Twins would still be in this if they played the Angels style of baseball and made the Yankees try for some perfect throws — they played far too tepidly, and they got the only possible result. I really think that the way the Twins and Red Sox played, the Red Sox sweep the Twins if they had played three.
I liked the Twins this year, and I was pulling for them, but I think they were a little worn after the insane battle for the AL Central crown.
Angels in 4.

anaheim angels - October 11, 2009
So what do the Yankees have that is better than ours?

Is it pitching? Bullpen? Hitting? Base running?

Some guy named Mark Teixeira
Other guys like Johnny Damon, Robinson Cano, Jorge Posada, Hideki Matsui, Nick Swisher, Melky Cabrera
Starters CC Sabathia, A.J. Burnett, Andy Pettitte
Some long reliever named Mariano Rivera coming out at the end of games.
Their shortstop is still a decent player, though he doesn’t get much attention from the national press.

CLANG!!!!!!!!!!!
Gotta love Abreu’s double off the wall and the loud CLANG!! That ‘clang’ is going to be my ringtone.
Fan Since 1981 - October 11, 2009
That clang is probably what loosened the door that opened in the bottom of the 9th
I like to think it was Nick coming on the field to celebrate with the guys though. What really gets me about that double was Bobby stepping to the plate with that grin on his face, like he knew what was gonna happen. It’s wierd, they looked really nervous with a 2 run lead and we looked confident even when we had 3 hitters down to their last strike. Amazing.

HALOS!!!!HALOS!!!!!HALOS!!!!!
I live in NY and I work overnights and get home around 7:30am. I could barely sleep knowing the game was on early. By 1:30 I said screw it got up to see the Sox up 5-1. By the end of the 7th I was getting a little nervous because I just wanted the series over. It seems like I’ve been waiting and expecting Vlad to come through in a big moment forever. When they walked Tori to get to him I thought Francona had lost his mind but realized it was just a sign that Big Daddy isn’t feared anymore. When he got that hit it released years of pent up expectation for one of my all time favorite Angels. This team reminds of the 02 team and Vlad might be this years version of Tim Salmon, one of my other all time favorites.
This team can produce runs against anybody and can shut down any offense. The Yankees are tough though so I say the Angels win in 7.
