I was in Las Vegas when the Angels clinched on Monday Night. Where were you?
A drunk British tourist staggering out of the PURE Nightclub at Caesars Palace gave me permission to take this photo of the sports book scoreboard. He then tried to urinate into an ashtray.

And on Halos Heaven, of course.
opiejeanne - October 1, 2009
Me too, on both counts.
Mrs. red floyd got mad because I yelled “YES!!!” when they won, and she was trying to sleep.

Can you interpret the board for me? I have never paid much attention to these when I was in a casino.

Thanks. It's too late right now for me to concentrate on it.
Oh, and the charm has been broken because we were at the game and they lost. The Angels have won every regular season game we’ve been to since 2001.
opiejeanne - October 1, 2009
in brief,
bet $170 on the Angels to win $100. it’s a “money line” bet meaning they don’t have to win by any specific number of runs. or if you bet $17 you’d win $10 (etc). there is rarely a minimum bet with these casino sportsbooks, so I always bet $5 or $10 if the odds look OK, and then whatever it pays it pays. the Angels are considered the favorite. if you took the Rangers, you’d basically be paying $110 to win $170 (the difference between the $100 is the casino’s take, or “vig”).
however this is different than in football like when a team is favored by 6-1/2 points. then they have to win by 7 for you to win the bet and collect your money. usually, these bets you place $110 to win $100, as long as your team covered the point spread.
then there’s a different (or “side” bet) called the over/under, just like in our daily Pregame Picks. you guess if the total number of runs by BOTH teams. so in this case the over won (11 + 1 > 9.5), so that’s what the 9.5 next to Rangers means. again, you’re betting $110 (or $11) to win $100 (or $10).

correction
*(the difference between the $110 and $100 is the casino’s take, or "vig").
bad typing today.
Brian S (brianguy) - October 1, 2009
Thanks. I was just trying to figure out if the odds were in favor of the Angels winning.
And I still don’t know.

I was at the game :)
rangers got shutout! Santana pitched a hell of a game too, anyone else see that black dude sell peanuts? That dude made me laugh all game long, good times…
SenorChuckles - October 1, 2009
I was at the game too.
I did Sunday’s Game with my daughter and brother, Left Field Pavilion. Monday night’s game I went with the girlfriend and sat in Right Field Pavilion. Sunday Night, I went with my girlfriend, brother, and his friend in the Knothole Club.
Great couple of games.

The loud guy?
He’s funny. I say “Cotton candy!” He answers: “WOULD YOU LIKE 6 or 8?” and another classic line he uses: “DON’T FORGET THE LAUNDRY MONEY” (talking about the quarters he gives back for change). Further, if you keep laughing, he’ll stop and look at you and say “WHAT’S SO FUNNY, MR GIGGLES?”
Downing Rules - October 1, 2009
can't be the same guy I'm thinking of
because in my experience, the only cotton candy guy I can think of, is basically an a**hole. the guy will INSIST on passing one cotton candy (and your 25c change) up 20 rows. never seen anything like it. not in my 25+ years of attending sporting events have I ever seen a vendor as lazy as this dude.
Brian S (brianguy) - October 1, 2009
and if you don't go to the stadium all the time and buy it, thus don't already know the price...
and are the poor customer 20 rows up trying to figure out how much money to send down, he just makes faces and throws his hands up in the air with an attitude.
Brian S (brianguy) - October 1, 2009
I love that guy
“Who wants a bag of salty nuts? You lady? I bet you want a big bag of salty nuts!”
BruinHalo - October 1, 2009
Hah never gets old.
SenorChuckles - October 1, 2009
I also noticed the vendor
that instead of yelling “CHARGE” along with the crowd he yells “PIZZA”
Some people actually laughed and bought one (biggest waste of $9.75 in my mind).
BruinHalo - October 1, 2009
I can't believe
anyone EVER buys that crap. it’s a $3 frozen pizza…
yet I see it every game. last time I went to that stand behind home plate, upper level to buy a drink 3rd or 4th inning. they ran out of pizza and 10 or 15 people were standing around dumbfounded.
a big plate of Panda Express (1 item with rice) is what, $6.50 at the stadium. CPK – DON’T DO IT
Brian S (brianguy) - October 1, 2009
It's far from CPK quality too...
I just love thinking that for the same price, I can buy 2 Little Caesar’s pizzas or 1 Costco pizza.

I was at home
Watching with my wife. I stood up for the final out and everything. I had a celebratory double of Jack Daniels after the final out. Good times, but nothing too exciting.
Gorbachav5 - October 1, 2009
-170...
was a gift from above. hope you had something down (though Caesars I can never really seem to get decent odds in the games I care about).
on Tuesday I had just moved and was unpacking at the new place (no cable yet), so I listened to it on radio. but what a joy it was to hear that game. and when moving, I found the only uncashed ticket that was in my house, from last year a game I wagered on in September when the PADRES beat Cliff Lee. at the time I was like… are you friggin kidding me? at least the Halos won that night which made up for it.
Brian S (brianguy) - October 1, 2009
let it be said...
I only bet on like 2 games a year. so yeah I’m not one of THOSE guys.
I just find it fun to occassionally lay $10 down in Vegas on my team, or whatever other game interests me.
Brian S (brianguy) - October 1, 2009
that was
*last September
Brian S (brianguy) - October 1, 2009
At the game...
My son got the warmup ball from Ranger’s starter Tommy Hunter as we were sitting in the bullpen. My boy is 5 and ended up giving the ball to Nick Adenhart (he left it at the fan memorial in front of the home plate gate). He was inspired by seeing Pattimelt crying up on the big screen and seeing the players acknowledge and celebrate with Nick’s image in center field.

Once it hit the 9th inning, I was standing up for Santana. :D

I was at the game...
In the best seats of my life behind the Texas dugout for the best price too (free from a season ticket holder friend!). I uploaded a picture of me here after being sprayed by the celebratory hose. Thanks to cupie for the shirt a couple weeks ago.
BruinHalo - October 1, 2009
that happened to me once
I went to fan appreciation day and had found some very decent $9 seats online in the 400 level about halfway down the right field line.
guy comes up 10 minutes before the game and hands my girlfriend and I their extra 2 tickets behind the Angels dugout. it was pretty awesome… maybe it was the same guy?
Brian S (brianguy) - October 1, 2009
That's pretty sweet.
This was a family friend. Although perhaps he is the same person. I’d like to imagine he’s nice enough to be your mysterious benefactor.
BruinHalo - October 1, 2009
Ah, but alas
after reading your post more thoroughly, the two cannot be the same person. My tickets were behind the first base dugout. Shame…
BruinHalo - October 1, 2009
cool!
Brian S (brianguy) - October 1, 2009

Maybe. I think.
Slasher52 - October 1, 2009
On HH...
still stuck in Georgia.
Slasher52 - October 1, 2009
I was in Vegas too
stuck in my room, no FSW, watching the game on a unbelievably horrible justin.tv webcam-pointed-at-the-TV stream, which, by the way, got shut down after the 8th inning by the streamer’s mom because the stupid kid wouldn’t do his homework. Thankfully ESPN2 carried the final out and some of the interviews.
swiss mcgee - October 1, 2009
LOL
yeah that is about what I usually get online when I can’t get near a TV but have internet!
you find it a lot for hockey games, where people don’t get Versus or Center Ice, or the game is simply not being broadcast locally.
pretty hilarious.
Brian S (brianguy) - October 1, 2009
I was in Vegas too
in the comfort of my home watching FSWest and on HH

I could be way off on the socks front :-)
but in general I like my Brits.
Brian S (brianguy) - October 2, 2009
I was at the game.
I took one of our student workers who is from Indonesia and has never been to a baseball game. She had been wanting to go and there is a possibility that she is leaving to go home in December so I decided to go on Monday. She had a BLAST. We stayed until the ushers started kicking us out. I didn’t want to stop celebrating.
