Panther of the Game: Jon Garland
Garland recovered from a lousy (and then lucky) first inning to pitch a 7-inning gem.
Torii Hunter did not take any sheet from a Pudge-Rod elbow shank to the ribs and Gary Matthews was the first one out of the dugout to defend him (with Lackey as a fearless backup) and Vladdy is starting to heat up at just the right time.
The game featured two debuts: Angel #821 Kevin Jepsen with a scoreless inning and #822 Freddy Sandoval at DH with a warning track flyout batting in the 8th for Garret Anderson.
You may now Get Excited about this wonderful asskicking in Los Angeles of Anaheim tonight!
WITH THIS 12-1 VICTORY OVER THE YANKEES, THE MAGIC NUMBER IS TWO!

Again
You gotta love Torii.
infant - September 8, 2008
except
that he probably earned himself a day or two off without pay for that.
jjackflash - September 8, 2008
Wood for Panther!
WAY above and beyond expectations!!
btw, Torii and Pudge made up after being ejected. that’s classy.
howiestheman - September 8, 2008
I really think Wood deserves the panther tonight.
How many two homer, 3-hit nights can a guy have?
Assist to Tim Salmon for apparently having a chat with our two young guys though. Just like with Reggie last year, it seems to have had an immediate effect.
Zu Long - September 8, 2008
I THINK THAT
dominating the yanks lineup is more impressive than dominating their lousy pitching staff.
THINK ABOUT IT…
Rev Halofan - September 8, 2008
Wood ... um word
eyespy - September 8, 2008
I think that expectations wise
the 23 year old rookie is more impressive than the 29 year old veteran and former 18 game winner.
Zu Long - September 8, 2008
But performance-wise
it’s a toss-up, leaning in Garland’s favor.
shiftyeyedgoat - September 8, 2008
Possibly.
But the Panther, as Rev keeps telling me, is about expectations.
Zu Long - September 8, 2008
So...
you expected Garland to pitch 7 innings of 1 run ball against the Yankees lineup
but you did not expect Wood, with 31 HR in AAA this year, to hit 2 HR, the first off of Pavano (making his 6th appearance in 3 seasons) and the 2nd way after the game was decided off of a nameless relief mop who i s likely 30th in the Yankees preseason pitching depth chart.
that is cool, I just had way different expectations.
Rev Halofan - September 8, 2008
I think my expectations of the $12 million veteran starter
playing a listless team that just got pasted by the freaking MARINERS (TWICE), are slightly higher than the Rookie who is presently still hitting below a .550 OPS lifetime, yes.
If you had different expectations, then so be it.
Zu Long - September 8, 2008
I'm with you ZL
Wood wins tonight.
Downing Rules - September 8, 2008
Agreed!
Fuck Garland.
That’s September….
BTW, I’m drunk.
jimmuscomp - September 8, 2008
jazzer drop your axe its jazz police
Rev Halofan - September 8, 2008
Yeah...
Garland was nails last night. I’d still give it to Woody – not like he has done too much damage against anyone in the Show, but Garland is a decent choice.
Hope he brings that stuff to the postseason – and not that 88 MPH junk he has every third start.
jimmuscomp - September 9, 2008
fangraphs
says it was not EVEN CLOSE and that S-Rod contributed more than Wood.
Rev Halofan - September 8, 2008
and that is exactly why computers should never be trusted.
howiestheman - September 8, 2008
Fangraphs has been outvoted before.
But honestly Rev, I didn’t really intend it to be a big, argument starting statement. I was just throwing my opinion out there. I felt like Wood’s two homers and double were the biggest part of tonight’s game, and said so.
If you’d rather give it to Garland, then by all means, do it.
Zu Long - September 8, 2008
7 Great innings is what we have pretty much come to expect from our pitchers to be honest.
We expect to give up less than 4 runs a game (unless Moseley is pitchin). What we do not expect is to score more than 5 or 6 runs in a game, or even hit 2 HRs in a game. Imagine to yourself, if Tex had gone 3-4 with 2 HRs we would have been grovelling for panther. Wood scored more runs than the FRIGGIN YANKEES! he outhit jeter, a-rod, abreu and giambi combined! Tonight, 3 Wood=Panther, while Judy=Lt. Panther
(I think a 3 panther system or something similar with points would help solve these problems)
anaheim angels - September 8, 2008
Really?
So if I look back over all your posts you are championing the fact that Garland is just an ordinary 1 run per 7 IP pitcher?
Rev Halofan - September 8, 2008
No, i am not.
What i am saying is that it is a helluva lot more likely that garland throws up his line than wood hits like he did. How many times has Garland thrown 7 innings of 1 run ball? alot. How many times has B-Wood had a multi-HR game in the majors? Never
anaheim angels - September 8, 2008
4 previous starts
5 ERS in each.
hauldog - September 9, 2008
Pudge apologizes
The postgame show is reporting that Torii and Ivan met and made amends. As the two returned to their respective clubhouses, Ivan allegedly said “Hey Torii, make sure you tell the guys it was my fault.”
yeswecan - September 8, 2008
Thats Awesome Sportsmanship!
Again I Love Torii!
Funke5ive - September 8, 2008
that makes sense
how can you really hold a grudge against a cool dude like torii
UCIHalo - September 8, 2008
Hula Dula and 1st Base Blue was great too
after Torii got robbed.
TheTypingFiend - September 8, 2008
also S-Rod was safe at first on that double up
Funke5ive - September 8, 2008
Yea, but we were up by at least 10 at that point
so that’s easily forgivable.
TheTypingFiend - September 8, 2008
I agree with howiestheman
Wood’s the panther, with Garland as runner-up.
red floyd - September 8, 2008

I Love Torii
Wood for Panther
Funke5ive - September 8, 2008
Forget you guys...
Soto for Panther!
MH252525 - September 8, 2008
Garland had a great night
But I think tonight it’s Woody’s Panther
TheTypingFiend - September 8, 2008
this is a tough one
garland did great, but it is hard to overlook a two bombs by a rookie
UCIHalo - September 8, 2008
two bombs yes
off of a terrible pitching staff, the 2nd on a total mop-up guy
Rev Halofan - September 8, 2008
point taken
give the kid some love. he did also have a two run double when the game was still close.
UCIHalo - September 8, 2008
just ask yourself
If tex had done it, would he be panther?
anaheim angels - September 8, 2008
Democracy will win.
Downing Rules - September 8, 2008
now consider
expectations of tex>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> expectations of wood. So if tex even has an argument possible for panther with that line, then wood should easily get panther
anaheim angels - September 8, 2008
100% agreed
howiestheman - September 8, 2008
if the score is 12-6
we are not having this conversation. But the score was 12-1. Garland allowed only 2 hits after the 2nd inning.
Rev Halofan - September 8, 2008
True, that is very pantheresque
and should be commended, just IMHO not as much as wood
anaheim angels - September 8, 2008
THe Yankees quit a long time ago.
I could have pitched 6 scoreless against them. They don’t care.
Chompo - September 9, 2008
Check that, I believe it was 2 bombs and a ringing double!
I’ll vote Driver, just to break that goose egg for the kid…may it be the first of MANY!
3 – 4, 3 RBI, 2 Runs
K3YEROUT - September 9, 2008
er, possible single and error to take away another rbi
K3YEROUT - September 9, 2008
Wood for panther
Garland was solid. Wood was a rockstar.
infant - September 8, 2008
They don't call him
Hula Dula the Domino Rula for nothing!
GMJ gets (non-panther) props for being the first guy out of the dugout… At least as far as I could see. It looked to me like he was the guy who caught Pudge’s arm. That was also a nice shot he had in his only AB.
All around, good show by everyone.
red floyd - September 8, 2008
I'm torn
Win for Panther!
Los Angeles de Anaheim - September 8, 2008
Sheriff Wood is Panther for ME!!!!!!!!
All the talk about him today, and then he does the requirments to use…
“Howdy Partners, My name is Woody.” (Last Pull string quote, hardest to get.)
with his 2HR night. He should get the Panther.
acuda27 - September 8, 2008
And let's hear it for KMo appearing in a victory!
Woo hoo!
Downing Rules - September 8, 2008

acuda27 - September 8, 2008
no joke
i thought that was a sure double
howiestheman - September 8, 2008
Panther: Brandon Wood
Tonight was the night where we got to witness Wood’s power. This was like a coming-of-age game. So many rookies with strong performances.

POTG = Garland
And a nice round of batting practice to boot.
vladtheimpaler - September 8, 2008
Garland
He’s struggled to eat up innings this year, so it’s great to see him put in a performance like tonight!
yeswecan - September 8, 2008
Yum yum innnings!
TheTypingFiend - September 8, 2008
Brandon Wood Panther
Pudge and Torii made up outside the locker room. Nice, classy thing to hear about.
Downing Rules - September 8, 2008
Lots of POTG's for Wood...gotta love that. BUT...
I agree with the minority on this one though.
Garland=POTG
For reasons stated above by Rev, Yeswecan, Vladtheimpaler and shiftyeyedgoat
Mayheminthehood - September 8, 2008
can we get a poll attached to this and see what the consensus is??
howiestheman - September 8, 2008

Rev Halofan - September 8, 2008

good point.
howiestheman - September 8, 2008
LOL...
K3YEROUT - September 9, 2008
Sounds fully decided, and I agree it's a close call.
But just gonna add that to me, yeah it’s gotta be Wood. The Yanks suck this year, and it’s not JUST their pitching. Both aspects of their game are off, so with that in mind, the rookie making $400K this year has gotta beat out the $12 million veteran.
Unless the argument is that Wood will have plenty more opportunities for POTY whereas Garland won’t. Because that’s 100% true.
101halo - September 8, 2008
i think it's time for the kid to get one
they both had great game, no doubt.
but since Garland has 4, why not give the kid his first?
howiestheman - September 8, 2008
Panther is not the Oscars
Panther is not about a sentimental selection. Like when Forrest Gump beat Pulp Fiction.
Rev Halofan - September 8, 2008
so Wood is the Tom Hanks to Garland's Samuel L. Jackson?
howiestheman - September 8, 2008
Dude, it's thinking like that that lets bullshit like The Departed win awards that at one point in time were actually awarded to GOOD movies.
Mayheminthehood - September 8, 2008
This was supposed to be a response to my homie Howiestheman...not Rev.
Although, i’m not sure whether or not Rev is being facetious. I remember that Oscar race, and I loved both movies, but at the time I was pissed that Pulp Fiction lost to Forrest Gump…even though I saw both movies numerous times in the theatre(Cinedome off of Chapman to be exact..right by the stadium).
Looking back…both movies are pretty damn good.
Mayheminthehood - September 8, 2008
which comment were you responding to?
like I said, both performances were great (much like the movies).
there’s really no downside here… just personal preference.
howiestheman - September 8, 2008
Tough Call
My heart say it goes to 3-Wood. But Garland’s performance went beyond the line score; for the second straight start, he gave the severely overworked bullpen some much-needed rest, hanging around long enough so that they only needed an inning apiece from Jepsen (nice debut, kid) and O’Day.
K-Rod, Shields, Arredondo, Oliver & Bulger all got the night off. I’m not sure if any of them even had to warm up.
jjackflash - September 9, 2008
wow alot of passionate folks pushing for Wood
Yeah, it’s neat the kid hit two bombs and all, but Garland’s performance meant more to the win tonight.
That said, if the kid does it again tomorrow, you pretty much have to give it to him — even if the Angels lose.
Let’s clinch it tonight! Cupie and I will be there.
yeswecan - September 9, 2008
BTW, Angels have already won the season series vs. NYY
That’s 5 years in a row now.
yeswecan - September 9, 2008
the angels have always been yankee killers
linkbruin - September 9, 2008
I had to laugh...
I was watching the game on the Yes Network (Yankees Network), in the top of the 9th when they show the “Geico Play of the Game”. Hunter’s groundout to Arod at 3rd to end the 4th inning. I found it somewhat comical. They at least gave the player of the game to Brandon Wood.
Also, in the aftermath of the Hunter – Pudge altercation, Ken Singleton started ripping into Hunter somewhat, talking about how you should never go at someone from the back, and that you should alway try to get around into their face before starting something. He backed off for the most part after Michael Kay noticed that Hunter stepped on the bat, and that caused him to go into Pudge a little bit.
And in his post game interview with the reporters, Girardi said that he would have gone in there trying to knock the ball loose from the catcher.
billhune - September 9, 2008
Thankful Torii didn't tear up a knee while stepping on the bat!
Key…no one gets hurt!
K3YEROUT - September 9, 2008
Looks like I missed a lot.
I gotta admit though that while Wood had what is easily the best night of his young career, this one goes to Garland for basically making the Yankees lineup an afterthought. It looks like no sweat now, but you have to remember that for 3 innings while the score was REALLY close, Garland SHUT THE YANKEES DOWN. 3 straight 1-2-3 innings for the 3rd, 4th, and 5th. Fear not, Wood fans, he’ll have other nights if he keeps hitting like that.
TheOptimist - September 9, 2008
While I voted for Wood...
Garland gets major props for manning up after the first. Let’s face it, at the end of the first, it looked like he would be 3 innings and out.
red floyd - September 9, 2008
I'm siding in the Wood camp
He was POTG last night. It was about time Garland had a good outing. But the way he has pitched lately should be held against him.
hk47 - September 9, 2008
I agree with that. Panther shouldnt be based on previous performances
unless its a hot streak where they barely miss panther for a couple games in a row
anaheim angels - September 9, 2008
Wood is Panther.
Give him the Panther for last night and let’s start the Brandon Wood era as the Angels’ shortstop.
snowhor - September 9, 2008
Hunter overreacted
Maybe I’m alone on this, but I thought Hunter overreacted last night when he chased after Pudge to push him. I thought it was stupid. It could cost him a couple games suspension when we’re in the middle of trying to chase down home field advantage.
Save the “we’ve wrapped up the division” talk, because that’s nice- but I’d rather have home field advantage. I thought Hunter acted rashly and it may cost the team if he gets suspended.
hk47 - September 9, 2008
Hunter said practically the same thing.
