Baylor, Ryan, and Downing all had much more left and proved the Angels to be idiots. Do we want to see that repeated with the best player the organization has ever produced (hey, I loved Timmy Salmon too, but let’s be real here)?

If we re-sign Teixeira, I would MUCH rather see a young Kendry Morales out in the RF/LF/DH role… he has a ridiculously high upside (which we’re just getting glimpses of right now), and he’s far cheaper.
Also, don’t throw out the possibility of Juan Rivera. With GA gone, Rivera becomes the everyday left fielder. Even if they re-sign Teixeira, we could use Rivera in LF/DH, Hunter in CF, KMo in RF/LF/DH, and Vlad at DH/RF.
GMJ is no more than a very expensive pinch-hitter, pinch-runner and late-inning defensive replacement on this team. We all know it’s a sunk cost… if we can magically get rid of him, this all becomes a lot easier.

seems like WAY too much too. But $7.5M/yr is, relatively speaking, a bargain in today’s game. If GA’s willing to throw the buyout away, then they’re really only paying about $4.5M. As for his age, this his best base stealing year in some time, he still turns on ANYONE’S fastball, and, despite it never being acknowledged here, he remains damned fast down the line for a man his size (regardless of age). He’s willing to DH, as he’s now proven, and Kendry Morales still has a ways to go before he can be deemed capable of easily replacing a man like GA (I think highly of Kendry, don’t get me wrong). If GA were that easy to replace, there would be guys all over the league like him. There’s not (yes, insert your OPS+ or Bavasism or whatever justification it takes to call him ‘average’ here).
Let’s see him get those next 638 hits with the Angels.
A couple more good games from GA and he leads the team in both hitting and RBI, despite his miserable early stretch(es). And he’s fallen out of bed to 26 2B (moving him one ahead of Mel Ott, Harold Baines, and Jeff Bagwell for his career). Early next year, he collects his 500th career double. As early as next year, he ties TED WILLIAMS for all-time doubles.
Oh, and he might just be the best teammate any of these Angels has EVER had.

Rivera is already (leg) injury prone, filling out by the day, and a terrible defender. And, please don’t forget, if Juan Rivera admits to being 30, how old is he really? Add to that the fact that he’s not aging well for a man of 30, and why exactly is he the better option than GA?
Where would you put your money if there were a foot race between Juan Rivera and GA? Hmmm. Who would you prefer in the batter’s box in a pivotal playoff or WS game? Hmmm. Sounds like a lot of eggs headed toward the Juan Rivera basket.
Rivera broke his leg on a freak play at 1B. Howie is Injury prone……He runs and his leg falls off. Rivera runs and some dumb ass gets in front of him and breaks his leg. You tell me who is injury prone. And yes I would rather have RIVERA over GA next year.

So, to be clear, Juan Rivera will be 31 next season, with year-round mileage, a very serious leg injury (that makes him one of the slowest players on the Angels), and a tendency to play out his welcome with teams.
It’s not that I don’t recognize Rivera’s talent, it’s that it’s not so overwhelming that it is worth relying on to quite that extent. Robb Quinlan is a capable Major Leaguer, but he can’t replace G.A. And I’m not entirely convinced that Juan Rivera is leaps and bounds above Quinlan either. They are what they are, journeymen Major Leaguers, utilized to their strengths by one of the game’s best managers.
Gotta go with GA. 3-4, 3 RBI and a HR.

GA for Panther
I’ll openly admit that I’m a GA hater, and I still don’t think we should re-sign him at the end of the season.
That being said, I have a signed 2003 All-Star jersey of his, and I certainly appreciate everything he’s done for the organization.
He’s been incredibly hit recently, and I hope he keeps it up… we’ll need it in a few weeks. :)
