Panther of the Game: Joe Saunders

Joe was in and out of trouble all day with leadoff baserunners - but shutting any team out thru 7 is nice, even if they are only Sacramento Rivercat remnants facing our beloved mostly Salt Lake Bees squad. SIXTEEN Wins is sweet for every Angel fan (except the less-endowed ones who haggle about "measurements").

Robb Quinlan and Gary Matthews Jr solidified their chances of spending October in their uniforms while Jason Bulger certainly did not. The BIG THREE back-to-back-to back homers of Kendry-Napoli-Woody were just delicious icing insurance on the cake of all Western Division cakes: defeating Oakland in the season series. That was at least until the Battle of the Bulge-y-Dondo brought in Frankie with the bases loaded to unexpectedly get his world-leading FIFTY NINTH save of the season, despite being terribly squeezed by the home plate umpire.

yup.....Joe es the panther gansta..........

glad I didnt go to that game…….

the AB of K-Rod vs. Cust

This umpire should be fired.

Seriously

I’ve seen Cust get more freakin’ calls on the outside corners than anyone other than Youkilis. Umpires need to forget about reputation and call balls and strikes.

where were pitches 1 and 5?

and even possibly 4?

Isn't #1 low?
  1. is the only obviously bad call. Then again, I wonder what the tolerances are on this thing you are observing.
I thought #5 was a better pitch than 1

but both were strikes in 95% of strike zones.

I agree...

SBN screwed up the format of my post…

5 is the only obviously bad call is what I had typed, but putting a “pound” in front made it format the way it did.

Test:
#5
or
Number 5

No doubt the first and the 5th ones were definitely strikes
Strike Zone was tight all day

For the Angels to draw 6 base on balls in a 9 inning game you know the Zone was small……….it worked both ways today

Did GA get a BB?
Tough to do when your napping in the corner
Did you make a statement about his hair?
hokie joe as panther
yeah he deserves it, but

lets just give it to q to bring up his total after he got out of that pickle

Finger lickin' good.

In the race for the mop-up ’pen role…
1. Jepsen
2. Speier
3. Bulger

With 2 weeks remaining.

Zeus easily numero uno rite now

agreed

Speier had a lights out 8th inning today.

Moving him past Jepson, IMO.

because of previous reputation?
ML seniority rule

Vets who start to perform better with more playing time (see Q, GMJ today) will likely come to the promised land of postseason lore.

I don't know

Jepsen’s shown some pretty good stuff so far… I cringe thinking about Speier pitching in Fenway.

Not sure how people are on the Jetson space ship after 4 appearances...

However, someone in the game threads reminded me (smartly) about K Rod in 2002. Although, I don’t see the electricity of K-Rod ’02 in the “stuff” thrown by Jepsen ’08.

Consistently 95

With a really good breaking ball (not nearly as good as Frankie’s to be true) and has shown good command. And how many times have you seen Speier come into the game and accurately predicted a home run being hit?

Neither one excites me all that much, but in the playoffs, you ride the hot hand, especially since he shouldn’t be pitching in a close game very often.

Speier has been good for a homerun for quite some time...

Surely, Jepsen will get some more good looks in the coming days. I hope he pitches lights out and does great. Anything to help the team.

It was finger licking good

But damn it raises my blood pressure. Just like KFC itself. Any old school Halo fan will know what I mean to beat the guys in the tight pants and gold socks and white shoes.

Any W against Fremont is worth it

Even if it means I have to run to walmart and get more rolaids

Didn't the Rivercats win the PCL championship?

That’s why in a contest of Bees vs Rivercats our team had a tough time. Add bonehead plays by Frankie and GMJ and you have a really hard-fought series from the NorCal’ers.

False hope

tell him what he wins Cupie

ha
Funke5ive...

Do you live or have you ever lived in Villa Park? Or, did you ever play adult baseball in Villa Park?

zing.

Whilst on the topic: Over/under 62.5 saves for Frankie this regular season.

Bulger

We’ll see you in 2009.

Boom.............Outta here
Alright brett... :)
reply to hauldog...
It is already clear that it was a reply to him....
that has to be my favorite sound bite
I love itbut Joe Namath's Strug-ga-ling is up there and so is FAT!
Hey Haul...

The Angels may have beat them 8 times in a row, but winning three before they do is all that matters.

What happens if the Angels meet them in the ALCS?

TB is going to wrap this up
I don't doubt the wisdom of Scioscia, but....

I was a bit surprised that he pulled Arredondo following a strikeout. If Arre had walked someone, given up a hit or a homer, I might expect it.

Cust vs. Arredondo

Cust wins that battle.

Plus, K-Rod was warming up to come in during that time as it turned into a save situation.

It was a save prior to the strikeout, Goat.
Yes, which is when K-Rod was warming up

and thusly not ready to come into the game, DR.

aha... you watching on TV had a better angle than me...

watching the HH game thread and all it’s “sky is falling” glory, SEG.

Joe all the way

I wonder if The Soth will ever be able to field the Real Angels. This whole month has been a big Bee-Fest. The Soth later tonight; “Dear Wizard of Oz. All I ask for are healthy hamstrings, an elbow, and a knee.”

The Bee's knees...

can rest our achy Angel knees.

Granted, the Bee-Fest is all part of The Soth's plan

From The Press-Enterprise

Spoken by The Soth himself:

“If guys need a day off, they’re certainly going to get it,” Scioscia said. “Home-field advantage is important, but not at the risk of going into the playoffs with a team that’s banged up. It’s not worth that risk, but certainly we have enough depth where we can put out a team that can win games and let some guys recharge, too.”

i think this would help us some....

reply to downing rules....
Apparently God encourages cheating...

I would’ve been pissed if I were any other team playing the Angels…

I dont get it

so either God was our 4th outfielder and let a ball get through his glove of God…
or God was trying to field against the Angels? and then failed?

yeah, that picture makes no sense
just trying to find a angels in the outfield pic thats all

as witnessed here in the game thread in the heat of “the sky is falling” posts during the game…

Just end it, Frankie…
we believe! You have satisfied us 58 times this year already.

Meant to title that in response to '61...

“I Do believe, ’61….”

'61's reply troubles extend onto my computer.

;)

In spite of our soiled undies...

Fangraphs shows us that the 9th inning only consisted of three minor blips on the radar….

see here:

maybe so...

But those three minor blips cost me a half a pack of cigarettes.

just saw this pic while searching around google...

i dont know what to think of it….

It's a photo-fest.
quick, bring picaso

he can paint some more for us

wait... that would be a painting

isnt that still kind of a picture… whatever lol

well i am pissed!

i leave, and a half hour later, we hit back to back to back homers?!

AHHH!!!!

and now, the idiots running MLB.com don’t have the highlight of it!!!!!

/rant

Excellent game

can’t believe I was able to catch innings 5-9 driving from Santa Maria to Lompoc. AM 830 is awesome!

That is ba

i went to school in los olivos so i know how u feel to occasionally find 830

What are you doing in Lompoc?
Work
Ah.

My wife’s family is in the Lompoc/Santa Maria area. We just purchased a second property in Lompoc that we rent out. I do the drive up there a lot. AM830 has worked fairly well for keeping up.

Buellton

I was able to pick up 830 (faintly, but I could hear it) while cruising through the Sta. Rita Hills on Santa Rosa Road, west of Buellton.

Did you stop at Pea-Soup Andersen’s?

I have

but not the last time. Actually, my favorite joint in Buellton is The Hitching Post (and yes, I’d been there before Sideways). Actually, a big breakfast in Solvang (Paula’s pancake house) is an ideal starter before wine tasting, as it won’t really hit you.

Danish Days this weekend.
