Panther of the Game: Francisco Rodriguez
My case for Frankie in this game is detailed deep in the comments here, like comment #48 or so...

panther = Tori
tanana40 - August 30, 2008
Fangraphs suggests K-Rod
Dondo for getting out of Weaver’s mess, or Torii for robbing another HR
Los Angeles de Anaheim - August 30, 2008
Probably Hunter.
TheOptimist - August 30, 2008
Torii for Panther!!!
Andyman - August 30, 2008
Torii
That save in Center, plus avoiding the tag and getting back to the plate on his run.
And yes, Laird missed the tag — both on the initial play and the dive to the plate.
red floyd - August 30, 2008
wow, dueling win photos!
tanana40 - August 30, 2008
Torii.........
because he probably shoulda gotten it yesterday……and deserves it today…….
norcaliangelsfan - August 30, 2008
K-Rod
He nailed down a nice save with two beautiful Ks, AND he worked in a beaning of Milton Bradley.
How can you say no?
Caseys Kiss of Death - August 30, 2008
Seconded.
sothball - August 30, 2008
Torii Hunter, Panther of the series.
44FAN - August 30, 2008
Torii for Panther!
Drove in a run, scored a run, had 2 hits, and most importantly saved the game with his great catch
stolenbases - August 30, 2008
Torii, Torii, Torii
Overall excellence needs to be rewarded!
kdoc - August 30, 2008
Torii = gansta
and he was also very Panther!
Vice panther to Wood for getting 2 hits, and getting that bunt down on the squeeze play.
howiestheman - August 30, 2008
Wood deserves maybe a lollipop for his break out play, but nothing with the word panther on the label.
44FAN - August 30, 2008
did it go above and beyond what was expected of him?
….i thought so.
howiestheman - August 30, 2008
being above a corpse is not grounds for the panther
although i was very pleased with his game and the squeeze was a big play
ihearhowie2.0 - August 30, 2008
he was the only guy (besides Torii) to get 2 hits
and he had an RBI, because he got down the bunt, on a tough pitch.
i’m just saying… he gets some props tonight.
Torii gets the panther, by far.
howiestheman - August 30, 2008
That bunt Wood layed down would make Reggie Willits jealous with envy.
44FAN - August 30, 2008
Don't forget his suicide squeeze, tooo
red floyd - August 30, 2008
lol gansta........indeed
norcaliangelsfan - August 30, 2008
AnaheimHalos61 - August 30, 2008
I said Brandon Wood deserved a lollipop, NOT under-age girl with lollipop.
44FAN - August 30, 2008
ahem.. lol
AnaheimHalos61 - August 30, 2008
.... can't it be both?
howiestheman - August 30, 2008
scottnak - August 30, 2008
torii for being a G when we really needed someone to
he might be the biggest “gamer” we’ve had since erstad and eckstein. makes sense since he comes from the gamer capital of the league, minnesota
ihearhowie2.0 - August 30, 2008
Regarding Hula Dula
Many on this board have wondered (perhaps rightfully) why so many have had this incessant mancrush on Spiderman, particularly in the face of his salary verses his ability to produce.
Over the past two nights, you saw why.
Zoe Necrosis - August 30, 2008
I've got a mancrush because the dude really knows dominos!
melvintoast - August 31, 2008
But incidentally
Although I wouldn’t mind The Domino Rulah getting the kitty today, my official vote is for Dondo.
Zoe Necrosis - August 30, 2008
You will have plenty of "Save" opportunities next year to give Dondo the panther.
44FAN - August 30, 2008
Torii
Followed by Woods and K Rod.
K Rod gets automatic Panther from me for 57 and 58
vladtheimpaler - August 30, 2008
"Panther of the game"
Here’s your Panther of the game Angel fans. You should thank him for your win tonight.
LSJ - August 30, 2008
haha, well played
no arguments there
ihearhowie2.0 - August 30, 2008
I don't get it
jjackflash - August 30, 2008
hes an umpire. Lets just say he aided in torii scoring a run
and by aiding, i mean flat out halucinating that torii somehow a.) was not tagged and b.) touched home plate the first time and c.) didnt think anything of torii dashing back to home after he passed it, knowing he didnt touch it.
aka the funniest play ive ever seen in my life. If you want to see what a Doug Eddings-esque screw job looks like from an outsider looking in, go to the rangers’ SNB and read their game thread. Its actually extremely entertaining
ihearhowie2.0 - August 30, 2008
Ah
I read about the play. Game recap said the catcher missed the tag twice (by the way, did anyone see the highlight from the minor league game the other day where the runner really did miss the plate the first time, then faked out the catcher and was able to scramble back & touch the plate?), not that umpire blew the call. Same recap said ump did blow a call at 1B, but I didn’t see the game, so what do I know.
jjackflash - August 30, 2008
yeah i saw it at work yesterday morning on TV
everyone in the breakroom that was watching started laughing histarically. THAT was the funniest play ive ever seen
halofan4life - August 31, 2008
it evens out with that call at first on the DP
anaheim angels - August 30, 2008
Not really
The missed call at home plate lead to 2 runs, because Napoli made it to third with 2 out. The missed call at first base only accounted for one.
LSJ - August 30, 2008
*made it to third with one out
LSJ - August 30, 2008
your folks over at LSB are getting a bit carried away with the WIKI thing.....
but hilarious as all heck
norcaliangelsfan - August 30, 2008
Eh, we have to try and have some fun
It’s been a rough month for us.
LSJ - August 31, 2008
napoli made it to third because laird didnt bother to remember that there was still a runner on.
its not the umps fault that laird forgot what he was doing. thats like saying that it was the OFs fault on that one play earlier this year when someone on the angels flat out laid out the rangers catcher, who then threw it to 3rd to get the runner.
anaheim angels - August 31, 2008
Not to mention
even if Napoli doesn’t get to third, you can’t guarantee that we don’t get the run some other way. You were directly gifted one run, we were directly gifted one run. That’s even.
You can argue indirect runs that scored, but I can counter with the fact that:
1) the run might have scored anyway
2) it was laird’s fault the runner went from fucking FIRST TO THIRD, anyway
Caseys Kiss of Death - August 31, 2008
Bullshit
I saw the replay. Laird clearly missed the tag. Torii knew he had missed the plate, which is why he dived back.
Torii beat Laird on the diveback.
red floyd - August 31, 2008
Really? Wow. When we ran it back on TiVo
what we saw was Torii got tagged pretty cleaned as he went by. The mitt clearly moves back as it brushes his body. And when he dove back to the plate the catcher totally blocked his reaching the base at all. It was not even close. I am still confused by what the ump was signalling through all that. He is under no obligation to inform the players that the runner has yet to touch the base, so what the hell was he pointing at so emphatically? At first I thought that he was calling Torii safe for touchingt he plate as he slid past, but it was so obvious that he missed the plate by a couple of feet, and then the ump made the safe call AFTER Torii dove back, but Torii’s body blocked the vuew of the ump so the ump got that call wrong as well.
Stirrups - September 1, 2008
Wood
Torri was awesome. But, I’ll give it to the kid for getting two hits. He needs this…let’s go Wood!
gohalos912 - August 30, 2008
Torii
his jersey came in the mail today after i bought it during his slump. Perfect timing.
princeton11loveshalos - August 30, 2008
based on your sig
was getting this jersey worth it? i guess don’t bring it to Angel Stadium, no? :)
SCHalo - August 30, 2008
well im goin one more time before i return to the east
with all them stinkin redsox and yankee fans
princeton11loveshalos - August 30, 2008
Vice Panther = HOOTERS!
in that stupid “white” “red” “blue” race they do, they had a 3-way tie so that ANY ticket wins 10 free wings at Hooters. Nice.
Downing Rules - August 31, 2008
Torii
saved a homer
Mickey Hacker - August 31, 2008
Here is Why I Gave it to Frankie
Torii’s run was a gift. Torii’s Ribby was a ground out. Torii’s catches are become game-saving regularities, much like Frankie’s game-saving regularities.
Notice that tonight, Frankie faced four batters who have seen him in the past two games. As much as this is limited action, it is the truest measure of a reliever to face a batter regularly, as most relievers thrive on showing up, getting a few outs and not being around for the same hitters for a long time.
Tonight:
- M. Young flies out
- B. Boggs K looking
- Bradley HBP
- Blalock K swinging
FRIDAY:
- J. Hamilton K swinging
- M. Bradley K swinging
- H. Blalock grounds out to 2B
THURSDAY:
- C. Davis K swinging
- Saltalamacchia singles
- B. Boggs HBP
- M. Young grounds into double play
Gotta be a Panther in there somewhere and tonight he did it against guys that are warming up to him and remain one of the best lineups in baseball.
Rev Halofan - August 31, 2008
I think it's Torii
I voted for Frankie on Friday.
Torii’s run was not a gift. I’m assuming you were at the game, so… The TV replay showed the ump got it right. Laird clearly missed the initial tag. Torii realized he’d missed the plate and came back. He beat out Laird on the diveback.
red floyd - August 31, 2008
Respectfully Disagree
Rev.
I will use some of your words from the Friday Night Torri “CATCH”. I was sitting very close to your seats (I didn’t see you there last night) and I was standing up next to the hitters eye about 5 rows from the field, Staring in disbelief as Torri made another spectatular catch to keep the Angels in the game, and in this case….the lead.
Panther goes to Torri.
