Panther of the Game: Juan Rivera

BELIEVE IN THE POWER OF THE RALLY CUPIE.
This game was positively 2002esque...

LMAO!
Nice pic! Nice come from behind win boys
Chone's Chonies - August 28, 2008
Great 8th inning comeback by Jhonny Rivers!
Los Angeles de Anaheim - August 28, 2008
best game of the season.
NoDakHalo - August 28, 2008
All I Can Say
is wow.
Johnny Rivers is obviously panther, but huge kudos to Garland for sucking it up after sucking, and sticking around through eight while giving up only one more run. That was huge.
jjackflash - August 28, 2008
This is actually a great point.
After getting completely drained yesterday following Saunders collapse, Garland came in today and let them recharge. That’s huge.
Zu Long - August 28, 2008
Rather, that IS huge.
Zu Long - August 28, 2008
YES
yeswecan - August 28, 2008
Uh Dick wood will always be the panther ... now matter what anyone says.
melvintoast - August 28, 2008
i just recomended this post
ihearhowie2.0 - August 28, 2008
Hey scotnak... Instead of obsessing about highly spurious pre-game picks, can we get a chart for rec'd comments?
I suck at pre-game picks but I think I might be more competitive in the realm of commentary.
melvintoast - August 28, 2008
that was awesome
and they sure shut me up.
kinda bummed Wood couldn’t get the hit in the 8th, but great job by Rivera.
howiestheman - August 28, 2008
Yeah... it wasn't fair that they read the scouting report and only threw him breaking balls. If they thre him a heater
down broadway I’d bet he’d hit it further than where Juan hit it. Luminus.
melvintoast - August 28, 2008
wow... the hate
howiestheman - August 28, 2008
Dude I'm serious... you're hating on me for assuming I'm being sarcastic.
melvintoast - August 28, 2008
really? there's no sarcasm in there at all?
howiestheman - August 28, 2008
i cant speak for melvintoast
but for me personally, i just dont do the kids glove stuff with wood. I dont get why people will tear apart quinlan or matthews or aybar or vlad or garland or weaver or pretty much everyone…..but not brandon wood.
The post about wood’s 4 pitch pop out with bases loaded and 1 out being awesome and so exciting was pretty much when i lost it.
If he sucks, people are allowed to have a problem with it, super-prospect status or not. For me personally, its just mind boggling how people have such a wildly different standard for brandon wood
ihearhowie2.0 - August 28, 2008
i was upset about the pop-up
but not as much as i would’ve been if Matthews did it.
GMJ is making $10MM a year, and he’s a vet. he gets more hate than the uber-prospect who’s making huge strides in his game.
howiestheman - August 28, 2008
He also hit a key triple a few days ago that helped the Angels win.
melvintoast - August 28, 2008
right, and he got the props for it
but does one or two hits make up for 2 years of sucktitude? i think not
howiestheman - August 28, 2008
and that i get
and im ok with it. I understand its because people want to see wood become what we’ve all wanted him to become since his monster cucamonga season.
and im one of them. i want him to be awesome and productive with us…but i also want us to win when we’re on a world series path. I got the mcpherson defensiveness because he showed a lot of flashes up here…but wood hasnt. Its not that i think hes a bust, because hes not…i just dont understand the special treatment. Hes 23 years old, hes not a delicate flower. If he fails, he should be open to criticism like any other professional.
ihearhowie2.0 - August 28, 2008
it's his first game back
and minus that 8th inning AB, he actually looked MUCH better at the plate tonight than he did at the beginning of the season.
he barely missed one in his first AB, but still hit it hard to center.
his second AB should’ve produced at least an RBI single (maybe a double) but we got the crappy end of the stick that inning with line drives.
plus, he made a few pretty good plays on the defensive side.
all things considered, i’m pretty happy with his performace.
howiestheman - August 28, 2008
ya
i liked his earlier contact as well….i was referring more to my reaction to the post about the last AB being so awesome. Given the situation, it seemed so absurd in the wood-can-do-no-wrong category. Reading that i felt like a robot that couldnt process a job and had its head explode.
ihearhowie2.0 - August 28, 2008
yeah
i didn’t agree that that was a great AB, but i agree with the fact that he’s making notable progress.
again, this is all based on one game, so we could be terribly, terribly wrong
howiestheman - August 28, 2008
amen BROTHA
ihearhowie2.0 - August 28, 2008
Obivous Panther is JR but
TH48 was solid tonight as well
deejayelleseven - August 28, 2008
viva rivera
ihearhowie2.0 - August 28, 2008
Pinch hit panther, love it.
But some kudos to Torii and to Garland for sticking it out despite a rough start—not easy at all
linkbruin - August 28, 2008
nice to see this pic back
Rivera for Panther
yeswecan - August 28, 2008
Juancho = Panther.......
Kudos for Jon Garland……..holding down the fort after blowing up in the first.
norcaliangelsfan - August 28, 2008
on replay: that game-ending DP
amazing grab by Teixeira
yeswecan - August 28, 2008
nice turn by wood too
UCIHalo - August 28, 2008
nice turn, bad throw
but its all gravy
ihearhowie2.0 - August 28, 2008
i can't believe garland gave up 4 runs in the first
and still managed to pitch 8 innings
UCIHalo - August 28, 2008
did you show up just for Frankie diaper time?
:)
SCHalo - August 28, 2008
props to tex for that scoop at the end
that would have had hamilton up with a man on
ihearhowie2.0 - August 28, 2008
Nice AB by Naps to walk with the bases loaded too
those darned lineouts right at the OF’s…that is what I will remember from this…that and Rivera’s smokin’ shot to CF. Great pick by Tex to end the game!
Good clean fun! :)
K3YEROUT - August 28, 2008
torii giving props to the Rally Monkey
yeswecan - August 28, 2008
i liked his line about needing patience in baseball
“3 out of 10 and youre a hero. in school thats an F”
ihearhowie2.0 - August 28, 2008
it only takes one monkey!
cupie - August 28, 2008
Tex was FIRED UP after that DP ball
he was shouting props all around the diamond and pointing, GA-style!
yeswecan - August 28, 2008
I saw that!
I went back and finished watching the game this morning (I fell asleep last night), but before that I read the comments here. I was watching for Teix’s reaction and damn, he WAS fired up. I love it!
POTG = Juan for being clutch, but Garland stepped it up big-time going 8 innings. Not only did he keep the Angels in the game last night, but helped the team for tonight by giving the pen a rest.
WiHaloFan - August 29, 2008
torii is a funny guy
“if i went to a casino, I’d win. 10 bucks”
UCIHalo - August 28, 2008
CLUTCH
princeton11loveshalos - August 28, 2008
this is the type of game
teams “of destiny” win. 2002esque is right.
SCHalo - August 28, 2008
Anyone for Figgy for some nice glove work?
red floyd - August 28, 2008
eh, he made some crappy plays earlier
Carl Johnson - August 28, 2008
some = one
Downing Rules - August 29, 2008
I'm all in for Figgy's big toe!
An army without leaders is like a foot without a big toe. And Sergeant Hulka is always gonna be here to be that big toe for us. I think that we owe a big round of applause to our newest, bestest buddy, and big toe… Sergeant Hulka.
melvintoast - August 28, 2008
Stripes will always be funny
cupie - August 28, 2008
good point
saved a run in the 8th
yeswecan - August 28, 2008
Figgy saved numerousness of hits and runs with his "down south" soft hands.
44FAN - August 28, 2008
After it was 4-0 Rangers
I just said, F it, they’re not gonna win ’em all, better to not be annoyed and just do whatever else.
And then in the eighth, I checked the score and it was 5-4 Angels.
Wow.
You just cannot write this team off.
scareduck - August 28, 2008
you and a ton of HH-ers in the game thread
the only difference is, you tuned out, whereas those dudes bitched and moaned in the thread for seven more innings. ugh.
[turning the page]
yeswecan - August 28, 2008
I have *tried*
to be more optimistic this year, or if not optimistic, less bitchy.
scareduck - August 28, 2008
yeah i gave up on that
in June
howiestheman - August 28, 2008
strange thing to do
this is arguably the best Angels team in history. i’d hate to have heard you in the bad years.
yeswecan - August 28, 2008
haha
good thing it wasn’t alive back then, huh? :P
really, i do my best to stay positive, but in games like last night’s (during the first 2 or so ininngs) it’s tough, given our team’s struggles over the past couple weeks.
howiestheman - August 29, 2008
you have been and it has been awesome.
cupie - August 28, 2008
you have succeeded
you are a wise Halos fan, and your words are even more powerful when not in a headlock by your immediate emotions (and i can say the same about myself, except for the wise and powerful part).
yeswecan - August 28, 2008
Figgy just got the number 1 web gem, if that's any help
for the 7th and 8th inning plays
howiestheman - August 28, 2008
im surprised they didnt give it to jacoby ellsbury for picking up giambi's walk off
ihearhowie2.0 - August 28, 2008
lol
howiestheman - August 28, 2008
I was on the road last nite, coming home from Anaheim.
Did Loux get a web gem for that 1-3 lineout DP?
red floyd - August 28, 2008
i dunno
didn’t watch… i just caught the end of BBTN cuz i was waiting for Sportscenter
howiestheman - August 28, 2008
I saw it on ESPN Sport Center last night.
44FAN - August 28, 2008
It was a good play, but not top-10 worthy...
I didn’t watch ESPN, but would venture to guess that it did not make it.
Downing Rules - August 29, 2008
wow
i was busy tonight so i couldnt watch the game but i checked the score in like the 5th and saw that it was 5-1 texas and was really bummed. but i just saw the final score and it literally made my night 10 times better, gotta catch the replay tomorrow morning and see what i missed
Sorbo182 - August 28, 2008
You can light up the Halo!!!!
Mickey Hacker - August 28, 2008
Big comeback win for us
Got it when we really needed it. Johnny and Judy for Panther. (ummmm, Judy).
Going to look at the highlights now, hope they have the defensive stuff you guys mentioned.
vladtheimpaler - August 28, 2008
Good Old Fashion Angels come from behind win.
The kind the Rangers fans hate the most against the Angels. Juan Rivera’s clutch hit was amazing. Naps needs to pick it up a bit offensively, as we know he can. Brandon Wood looked better as far as plate discipline and seeing the ball than last time he was up. I guess as he gets more start in the next few days, our question will get answered whether he is really ready for prime time. Jon Garland’s pitching still drives me batshit, but he hung in there and got the job done. It was great to get the first W in this series and pad the standings.
44FAN - August 28, 2008
Naps needs some hits to fall, that's all
he’s still getting on base, and he hit some balls hard tonight, but had nothing to show for it.
i still think he’s the best option.
read our conversation above about Wood… that pretty much covers it
howiestheman - August 28, 2008
Went to the game tonight and just got back...
…great atmosphere at the park. The 8th inning rally did remind me of ’02. It was a little frustrating earlier in the game because they hit so many balls right on the screws for outs.
Rivera missed a grand slam by about 2 feet. I sure hope he is re-signed this winter!
Oh well…magic number is down to 13…just another Halo victory!!
sothball - August 28, 2008
Sign Rivera for 09!
If he stays healthy, he should be a bargain for any team that picks him up.
stolenbases - August 28, 2008
Nail on the head (or screw head?)
You said it…they were hitting a lot of balls really well, but RIGHT AT THE DEFENDERS. The luck had to change eventually.
Downing Rules - August 29, 2008
Just watched the highlights
That defensive play by Figgy on that ball down the line was Robinsonesque.
vladtheimpaler - August 28, 2008
Lansford-esque?
Butch Hobson-esque? ;)
Downing Rules - August 29, 2008
who is the guy in that pic?
