-GMJ cost us a run, and then got it back
-Teix opened up that inning with the double that got us started
-Teix hit a home run earlier in the game to start the offense
-Teix has not had the chance to be rewarded with a panther yet, despite his constant production with the Angels
He’s been the leading offensive force on the team since his arrivial and he broke through first……..it seems like the only way he can score a run is to hit a homer……he finally got some help today…..but without his solo shot and his leadoff 2B…….there would be no Chance for GMJ to redeem himself……..he has single handedly kept the Angels in games during some of the losses……..and without him…….today would have been another loss.
Were down 3-0 going into the bot 6th. Our offense is doin shit. Tex leads it off wiht a solo shot.
Bot 8th, angels down 1. Tex leads it off with a double. If he doesnt have both of those clutch hits, then the angels lose this game (most likely)
But driving in the go ahead run and scoring the insurance run when most expect him to ground or strike out and kill the rally must count for something.
Teix did have a great game, but that’s what I expect from him, otherwise people wouldn’t be so worried about our chances of resigning him and if we’ll be outbid for him.
Maybe it’s just me, but I put a lot of stock in the go ahead run.
GMJ did way above of what I expected of him (considering his ginormous fall from grace) but the thing about it is………If Teix cant get a panther from these last two games…….(in my opinion he shoulda gotten it yesterday since Oliver did what he was supposed to as a reliever) He (like Frankie) will never get it……
Not that any of this truly matters……..but its fun to argue.
Oliver stepping in and shutting the door on an offense that had scored 5 runs off of us in less than 5 innings (for 2.2 innings, mind you) “just his job” anymore than driving in a ton of runs with good power is “just his job” for Teixeira?
Expecting someone to be god awful and suck to a horrendous degree, and then have him do something that “doesn’t suck” (scoring a run from third with less than 2 out, regardless of the manner) doesn’t warrant panther…ESPECIALLY if the run he drove in only serves as a “make-up” for the one he allowed.
though I disagree that you shouldn’t look at how the run was driven in.
Here’s how I see it.
A Sac Fly is good and should be expected of most players with a runner on 3rd and less than 2 outs. A run scores = productive out.
A base hit is better because there is still a baserunner that the pitcher has to worry about, a run has scored, and the offense still has a couple of outs to play with.
A double is even better because there is now a runner in scoring position and their is less threat of hitting into a double play, in addition to all the advantages a base hit would have given the offensive team.
A triple is the best thing short of a home run because the pitcher finds himself in the same position that he was in when you came up to bat, except he has thrown more pitches and a run has scored. The offense still has their remaining outs, and with less than 2 outs, all the next batter needs to do is hit a deep fly ball.
The triple, I think, also shows a player hustling an being aggressive, something that should be rewarded.
Gotta be Tex: put the Angels on the board, then started the winning rally.
The whole 8th inning was Panther.
1) Dondo gives up a HR but the umps get the call right and take the run off the board. Dondo comes back to K the next two hitters.
2) Tex with some excellent opposite field hitting to start the 8th with a double.
3) The usually pull-happy Vlad socks the ball to straight away center and runs hard for the triple.
4) Great AB for GMJ. With 2 strikes he is able to pull Crain’s 94 mph fastball, and much to his credit, legs out a triple.
5) Another great AB. JR, who so often swings at the 1st pitch, actually takes two breaking balls – the exact kind of pitches he pops up in the infield due to an off-balance swing. By working the count, he is able to smack Crain’s fastball hard for the SF.
however my point was…… with as much money as GMJ is getting paid…….he should be able to get the runner in from 3rd with less than 2 outs a good majority of the time…….he doesnt have to hit a triple….that was a bonus……but a sac fly, groundout..etc would all work the same……

His bobble early in the game?
Seriously, give the man his due, he finally came through big this season.
red floyd - August 24, 2008
Finally?
He hit a grand slam in NY to get us back into a game. His OBP is near 500 he has never stopped coming through.
hauldog - August 25, 2008
Nevermind I thought you were talking about Tex.
hauldog - August 25, 2008
One triple doesn't make up for his blunder that also cost us a run
I say Tex gets his first Panther. He led that team to victory today
Chone's Chonies - August 24, 2008
Gotta say Tex
HaloDutch - August 24, 2008
One word: TEX
anaheim angels - August 24, 2008
but GMJ for LT panther
anaheim angels - August 24, 2008
Agreed, Tex
gcash - August 24, 2008
Tex = POTG
wallispdub1 - August 24, 2008
If the Panther is and expectation/results game
that it is often said to be (often why Frankie has not recieved many in his Angels tenure)
No other than GM Jr can get it.
TheTypingFiend - August 24, 2008
GMJ
for beating his curse and knocking in the winning run
SurfCity - August 24, 2008
tex had a great game
UCIHalo - August 24, 2008
I am going to go with Stirrupts... Frankie
cupie - August 24, 2008
Tripled in the winning run...
that’s Panther
Los Angeles de Anaheim - August 24, 2008
Exactly
I wouldn’t be mad if Tex got it, but in my view it really has to be GMJ.
ViolaHalo - August 24, 2008
Mark Teixiera
Without him the Twins take 3 out of 4
The Limey - August 24, 2008
Clutch!
GMJ
SurfCity - August 24, 2008
Teixeira got the team back on its horse today.
44FAN - August 24, 2008
Reasons:
-GMJ cost us a run, and then got it back
-Teix opened up that inning with the double that got us started
-Teix hit a home run earlier in the game to start the offense
-Teix has not had the chance to be rewarded with a panther yet, despite his constant production with the Angels
Caseys Kiss of Death - August 24, 2008
Jaysus.
I forgot Tex hadn’t gotten it yet.
That changes things for me.
ViolaHalo - August 24, 2008
What else does Teix have to do around here?
He’s been the leading offensive force on the team since his arrivial and he broke through first……..it seems like the only way he can score a run is to hit a homer……he finally got some help today…..but without his solo shot and his leadoff 2B…….there would be no Chance for GMJ to redeem himself……..he has single handedly kept the Angels in games during some of the losses……..and without him…….today would have been another loss.

K3YEROUT - August 24, 2008
Well...
if he could pitch and close out a game….
cupie - August 24, 2008
tex.
all matthews needed to do was hit a fly ball.
tex led off two innings with HUGE hits.
plus, gmj didn’t hustle earlier and cost the team a run in the field as well.
Quinlan's Goofy Swing - August 24, 2008
But GM Jr did more than just hit a fly ball out.
He hit a TRIPLE.
And then scored a run on Juan Rivera’s fly ball.
TheTypingFiend - August 24, 2008
so Texieria went 3-4 2 runs scored and a RBI....
oh and no Errors on defense…….
norcaliangelsfan - August 24, 2008
Right
But the way I understand it is that the Panther doesn’t necessarily go to the best performance, but the most clutch.
TheTypingFiend - August 24, 2008
so hitting a solo shot when your team has yet to touch the starting pitcher in 5 half innings
and leading off a rally with a double is not clutch?
And someone getting someone home from 3rd with less than 2 outs is somehow more clutch……..interesting………
norcaliangelsfan - August 24, 2008
The most clutch, eh?
Were down 3-0 going into the bot 6th. Our offense is doin shit. Tex leads it off wiht a solo shot.

Unfortunately
that reward will be more playing time.
Caseys Kiss of Death - August 24, 2008
who knows.....maybe this snapped him outta his funk?
Wouldnt that create quite the pickle?
norcaliangelsfan - August 24, 2008
One can hope
(I most certainly do, probably why I’m fighting for GM Jr)
Otherwise get well quick GA!
TheTypingFiend - August 24, 2008
hey I was a staunche supporter of GMJ for a long long while
but I can only be kicked in the balls so many times before I have to fight back…….your defense of him is commendable.
norcaliangelsfan - August 24, 2008
If you had told me I'd be doing this
when he came into the game for GA…
TheTypingFiend - August 24, 2008
lol
norcaliangelsfan - August 24, 2008
also had that hit been with 2 outs....I would be more inclined to agree with you
but since there are numerous ways to get that run home in that situation…….it doesnt carry the same weight…..to me atleast.
norcaliangelsfan - August 24, 2008
true, the go ahead run means alot, but the tying run means even more, because we cant get to the go ahead run if there is no tying run
anaheim angels - August 24, 2008
oh oh oh......
touche……
norcaliangelsfan - August 24, 2008
Right
But we can’t get the tying run…
…without giving up a run.
(On a line drive to RF perhaps???)
TheTypingFiend - August 24, 2008
no bad........bad bad bad
norcaliangelsfan - August 24, 2008
hahaha
but then teixera would have scored the go ahead run, which ruins your argument
anaheim angels - August 25, 2008
MARK TEIXEIRA
NoDakHalo - August 24, 2008
I agree with norcali
what the hell does Tex have to do to get a Panther?
Tex = Panther!

OH, and get used to seeing HGH in the OF again folks…Old man river is hurting…
K3YEROUT - August 24, 2008

ViolaHalo - August 24, 2008

Panther?

GMJ gets extra points
for exceeding expectations and clutch hitting. Give him a break.
SurfCity - August 24, 2008
Maybe...
…but he’s so far into the debit side of the ledger already.
Give it to the rental.
The Limey - August 24, 2008

Tex for Presi,,,,,,,,urrrrrrrr Panther
Come on Tex is the Panther of this game and the team for that matter. Since he was acquired he has done nothing but hit .386 with 7 HR’s.
Back to back HR games including back to back 3-4 games when the team has been slumping is enough to lock up a Panther
