Blame Of the Game: Do I really need to say? Speier.
But keep your chin up. Losing streaks happen. All you need to do is reach into your pockets, brush off another fresh coin. And get another game in and hope it goes your way next time.
And make sure you don't pick that same character again for the next game.

DFA SPEIER

except that we've been picking the same character in these situations all year
can we get some common sense in the dugout???

HIGH SCORES!

Justin Sipid
gets the BOTG… but only because we can’t give it to the entire offense.
red floyd - August 21, 2008
yea how can the Angels simultaneously take strikes right down the middle
and swing at balls way outside the zone. It’s mind boggling!
MH252525 - August 21, 2008
Morales Made contact EVERY time up!!
Oh Scioscia took him out because he didnt swing at piece of shit pitches and strike out. I get it now ; )
acuda27 - August 21, 2008
What I want to know is
why Soth kept S-Rod as the DH after the double pinch-hit, instead of putting Mathis in the 8-slot. He pulled K-Mo for S-Rod and Naps for Rivera. At that point, he could have slotted Mathis into S-Rod’s spot.
red floyd - August 22, 2008
Yes Speier needs to go
It’d be one think if they didn’t have alternatives but Bulger has been awesome in a hitters league with like a .62 ERA.
The stat that really shows how bad Speier has been is that his season OPS against lefties is almost 1.000. Basically left handers hit like Tex against him.
It’s obvious Soth, DFA his sorry ass.

Bonehead play of the game: Sean Rodriguez's sorry excuse of a bunt
Go back to Baseball 101, Rook!
PieceOfAase - August 21, 2008
would have liked to have seen a hit and run there
Everyone in the park knew a high fastball was coming and even if he gets the bunt down they would have had 2 struggling hitters coming up trying to drive him in.
MH252525 - August 21, 2008
Bonehead play of the game: Actually pinch hitting SRod for KMo with the game on the line
howiestheman - August 21, 2008
That was it
SRod popped it up and the catcher got it.
He could of at least hit it hard enough for the pitcher to try and get it then twist his ankle or something.
eyespy - August 21, 2008
Dude he got a bunt down with TWO STRIKES last time.
He shouldnt have been in the game in the first place. Unless he was PHing for “I cant hit Mathis”
acuda27 - August 21, 2008
Hm.
GA comes up a close 2nd via fangraphs… to the suckitude of the game.
scottnak - August 21, 2008
BTW Guys
Bulger got the save today for Salt Lake by throwing 13 pitches (9 strikes) and striking out the side in order.
But of course we can have him rot away in AAA because we are paying Speier millions of bucks.
MH252525 - August 21, 2008
Bulger's K rate is an incredible 15.8 per 9
72 Ks in 41 innings after tonight’s save.
Fan Since 1981 - August 21, 2008
One can only wonder what Speier's K rate would be in AAA
Maybe the first time through the league he’d get some until those youngsters realize his “change” is really his fastball
MH252525 - August 21, 2008
Also I looked it up
When Frankie was in the minors in 2002 before he came up his K rate was 13.01
If the Angels needed a K in the postseason I’d rather have Bulger in there than pretty much anyone on the current Angels staff.
MH252525 - August 21, 2008
aaaaaand
everybody’s favorite uber-prospect went 1-2 with an RBI and 2 walks.
he’s now batting .299.
Link to Box Score
howiestheman - August 21, 2008
yea I hope he gets some playing time in Sept.
Also I don’t know how Soth feels about Wilson’s D but I have no doubt he’d hit circles around Mathis, the guy has put up an OBP WELL above .400 since June.
MH252525 - August 21, 2008
if he keeps this up and gets a chance to hit in September
he might find himself playing for us in October
howiestheman - August 21, 2008
well if he doesn't come up before Sept then the Angels would have to have
an injury to put him on the postseason roster. That’s why I think the Angels should call up Bulger for Loux yesterday!
MH252525 - August 21, 2008
Or just use Loux
Sheesh. Anyone but Speier at this point. And I’m a Speier fan.
Clutch - August 22, 2008
HE SUCKS HE IS NOT A VEEHHTRUNNNN
This is Scioscia talking through Acuda27 btw.
acuda27 - August 21, 2008
"rot" is an interesting word
I agree, I have no idea why he’s not in the Angels pen right now.
hk47 - August 22, 2008
The BOTG vibes for Speier were called out during the game thread, even before Lackey's Houdini act.
We’re being set up. For either:
a) a walk-off win
b) a hanging Speier slider
Ain’t no stoppin’ us now. We got the groove!

SCIOSCIA TAKES THE BLAME FOR THIS GAME. IT HAS BEEN OBVIOUS ALL SEASON SPEIER HAS NOTHING. THANK YOU. I WILL STOP SHOUTING NOW. SOON. REALLY.

Well...
If I recall correctly, Scioscia isn’t an option.

i dont know if anyone has said this, but...
FEAR THE TWINS.
NoDakHalo - August 21, 2008
that wasn't supposed to be the end of my post...
trust me, i watch them everyday. they have strong pitching, speed on the bases, as good of a 3-4 punch as anyone (including us…yes, we aren’t the greatest ever…or even this season), great defense, probably the best top of the order in the league, as far as i’m concerned (with span and casilla), and CLUTCH HITTING. you can lead the league in hitting every year, but if none of it is with 2 outs, it don’t mean SHIT.
FEAR THE TWINS.
NoDakHalo - August 21, 2008
Personally I'm not sold at all on their pitching yet
Blackburn has thrown 164 Innings in the majors
Slowey has thrown 188
Perkins has thrown 151
Bonser’s ERA is over 6
Wait for those guys to become more exposed to the bigs. Remember the success Jason Dickson has his first 200 innings in the majors! He was a legit All-Star in 97 then the league adjusted.
I’ll give you Liriano though, when healthy that guy is a stud.
MH252525 - August 21, 2008
bonser is irrelevant
in fact, he doesn’t even get mop-up innings anymore.
their bullpen is weak, obviously other than nathan, but that is their only real concern.
NoDakHalo - August 22, 2008
Looking on the bright side
Lackey was brilliant without his best stuff (he even worked out of a jam he created with his own error), and the bullpen (with one glaring exception!) was nails for 3 innings.
Sure the offense stunk up the joint, but they’ll come around, and we still have the best rotation in baseball and a pretty good top 4 relievers (5 if we call up Bulger). Don’t sweat it.

SCOTNAK for gamethreading and keepng the site rolling along – good vibes at the stadium tonight, frankly i will take this amazing John Lackey outing as a sign that we are still on the right track!

The Downward Speier
He and GMJ are the Jonahs on board.
Rally Manatee - August 22, 2008
Here's the thing
Every good team goes through a slump. A month in a half ago or so the Cubs went through a slump. I remember thinking “maybe these guys aren’t so good.” Now they have been consistantly winning.
My point is, I am actually glad we are going through the slump NOW. This should be followed by a leveling off, then peaking again. It is a normal progression for a good team. I really think we are in the perfect position to come on strong in September for the playoff run.
Oh, and my boy Speier is 1-7.
vladtheimpaler - August 22, 2008
word.
Better to get the sputtering out well before when it really matters… (forbidding the apocolyptic numbers)
scottnak - August 22, 2008
THANK YOU!
Also, there’s nobody saying that the Red Sox aren’t a good team…and I think we all know personally that they’ve gone through a couple of losing streaks this season…heh, heh, heh…
tbone_cutter - August 22, 2008
Exaclty
A few weeks ago, I was afraid that we were getting too hot too soon. Is it strange to say that I actually don’t mind the slump right now? I just know this gives us a better shot at getting hot again at the right time.
thrill000 - August 22, 2008
Speier did throw a meatball to Punto
and almost everything he threw was flat at 84mph….and he now has 7 losses…and we all knew when he came into the game it was not good…and has been a total disaster all season…..but Hunter over ran the ball hit by Punto and didn’t make the catch. He should have caught it and he makes that play 99/100 times. That is routine for Torii. He makes that play and than Speier gives up a jack and THEN Speier is BOG. That didn’t happen.
Hunter also went 0/4 with a BB and lead the team with 4 men LOB. Hunter is BOG in my book.
LosAngel - August 22, 2008
And even then
Torii almost got it.
red floyd - August 22, 2008
Agreed- Torii was BOTG
He gets a pass from people after he drops that fly ball last night? And he was 0-4? BOTG. We all know Speier sucks, but he gets out of the inning unscathed if Torii catches that ball.
hk47 - August 22, 2008
MARINE LAYER = BOTG
Torii hit a ball four inches from the top of the fence that sent the Twin LF to literally nestle in the LF fence to catch it – two guys were on, he could not have hit it any harder. Hey an out is an out, butt that would have been a clutch homer in many parks and in anaheim on many days and nights.
The 12th triple came right toward my seats, I assumed it wa going to be a homer. Torii’s hesitation was the split-second-assessment that he might have to paly it off the wall before realizing he had overcommitted to catching it. It was NOT a routine fly in any way shape or form.
Rev Halofan - August 22, 2008
You can use the same character again
Just so long as you f’ing FIGURE OUT HOW TO USE HIM.
Which at this point is unfortunately “not at all.”
Clutch - August 22, 2008
Not Speier
The Whole lineup should take the blame.
Mickey Hacker - August 22, 2008
Agreed....
As long as the whole lineup includes Speier sitting at the top of the heap.
ViolaHalo - August 22, 2008
GA
for striking out a lot. Torii Hunter for missing that fly in center. Even though it was a tough play it probably could’ve been made. How about Figgins for not snaring that hit in the top of the 12th. He does the dive over the ball trick a lot.
higdog - August 22, 2008
And pretty far off the line when the go-ahead runner was on 3B
Stirrups - August 22, 2008
Spier
is now in mop up duty, Spier meet kevin Gregg
Sinatrasratpack - August 22, 2008
Spier? Are you frigg'n kidd'n me?!
Yeah, that’s it. Let’s focus on the least of our problems. That’ll get it done.
How about a line-up of feared hitters like Texieria, Guererro, Hunter, Anderson, Kendric etc. choking at just about every at-bat? Only 1 hit after the 4th inning.
How about teaching S-Rod to lay down a bunt? That’s twice he popped out on a bunt. The sacrafice bunt is a intergral of the Angles strategy. Bring back Willits. At least he can lay it down in a clutch.
How about all the blunders? Hunter not making a catch that he could have nailed in his sleep. Lackey throwing the ball away (2 errors in the game)
But let’s focus on Spier. Nobody likes him anway…
Scuff - August 22, 2008
isn't it just a bit disturbing that Speier
has more losses than 3 of our starting pitchers?
howiestheman - August 22, 2008
Why is this loss on SPEIEIER? BOTG: Hunter!
Just because he sucks….?
Torii Hunter was the one dropping the critical fly ball. If that were GMJ, we’d be all over him.
Hunter is the BOTG.
