Even though they have a really good core, a lot of the pieces are gone to free agency next year. Dunno if the ones they have are good enough to replace lost production (Carlos Pena in particular, but there are others).
Pena is signed through 2010, Longoria was inked to a long term deal
Crawford has 09 and 10 option
Percy another year and pitching staff is locked in with D Price waiting
this is the EXACT situation where you want to bring in your closer. To close down a rally. Bullpen “roles” are a joke and the managers that started slotting guys into 1 inning roles have screwed up the bullpens of the future.
98% of MLB managers are under-utilizing their closers.
I suspect that it is an extension of the same theme. Limiting a closer to one inning allows that closer to throw harder. Be more dominant. But that only works if you have ANOTHER closer to pitch the 8th. And if you have even ANOTHER closer to pitch the 7th, both the 7th and 8th inning guys can throw harder as well. And all that allows the starter to go 6, throwing harder, and qualify for his quality start and win.
So it ain’t that closers are overrated, it’s that true closers are under-utilized and that their limited role is improperly valued, preventing managers from using them when the appropriate moment presents itself – if that moment happens to occur before the 9th.
The real downside is that this trains the closer to work only one inning. At this point, under Sosh’s management, Frankie probably does not have the gas to go 6 outs anyway.
Ball hit his glove clean. It just bounced off the heel and not the pocket.
That was the error. When the ball got to him, the runner was only 2/3’s the way from 1st to 2nd. Just because that guy is none too quick as a 2B does not mean that the play was beyond human.
Won’t say anything for yours, since Joba went on the DL a few weeks after I gave him to you, despite Hardy’s sudden suckitude…though he’s now returning to hot form, apparently…
You are pushing that particular problem, and I agree with you. But I think that is Sosh’s fault. For most of the year, most of the others have been pushing the general rejection of Frankie altogether, for reasons not having anything to do with not working the 8th.
this problem is Sosh’s fault, not Frankie’s. If Frankie can command $15 million, and Arte pays him, but Sosh only makes him work 3 outs, who fault is that? Arte for overpaying? Sosh for under-utilizing? Frankie for maximizing his income?
I think Sosh, so I don’t blame Frankie, so I don’t diss Frankie for succeeding where he is used, and I realize that where Frankie fails many others have failed before him, and shall fail after him.
Hasnt Dondo been asked to do a job for 1 inning as well?
the only difference is it hasn’t been the 9th. Still being asked to hold the game down and do a job that ultimately will lead to a victory. You realize this is the first time in F-Rod’s career that he has not been extended more then an inning. He had done it on many other occasions prior to the start of this season, and there was never an issue. Now he has him sitting there as the game falls apart
I agree that it isn’t F-Rod’s fault. Just hate the talk about how he is the best thing ever. Not saying he is god awful but he is not worth the kind of $$$ he will demand nor is any other closer in all honesty. Thats me though.
Is asked to extend himself? The best ones – the ones not named Frankie are not being run out there before the 9th inning of most games. If you do, you risk the health of your best guy.
That may not be in-line with the belief that closers need to do more to earn their money, but it is Justin Speier, Scot Shields and Jose Arredondo’s job to be a bridge to K-Rod. Speier and Shields get their millions as well – why does K-Rod have to do their jobs?
Never said that! Just pointing out that there is often times that a save needs to happen prior to the start of the 9th inning. Looks like Francona, Gardenhire, and others see that as well.
Never said he had to go out and pitch every game at 1+ innings or more.
If you had no bullpen or at least have a bullpen that hasn’t done the job, you may have to bring your closer in as a necessity. I think that is more of the case with other teams than with the Angels.
Scioscia has done it in the past, where he needed K-Rod before the ninth inning and brought him in. But when you have two supposedly capable arms to serve as a bridge, why put more stress on K-Rod by expecting him to come in?
It seems you are painting the handling of K-Rod as the closer somehow babying him or giving him only opportunities where he can rack up saves without consquence.
If I remember correctly it was the 8th and Shields looked awful. Needed 5 outs for a win and he sat on the bench. Had not pitched in 5 days. Today they used Dondo 1 2/3 inning because Shields was out of the loop. You going to honestly say that F-Rod could and should not have been out there late in the 8th?
I said it before……….say it again……..He has been used every year but this year for more then an inning. Would not have hurt to use him Tuesday or tonight in the 8th.
let's go Angels

Blue smoke... isn't that what you see when your engine block is cracked?
melvintoast - August 20, 2008
white smoke Murph
Angel Aviator - August 20, 2008
White smoke is the steam you see when your cylinder heads are gone!
melvintoast - August 20, 2008
White smoke is due to water getting in to a cylinder from a bad gasket, cracked block or a cracked head
Angel Aviator - August 20, 2008
Blue smoke is usually transmission fluid due to a leaking modulator valve
Angel Aviator - August 20, 2008
I thought it was burning oil.
melvintoast - August 20, 2008
Either way your in a bad spot when you have that happening
Angel Aviator - August 20, 2008
It's usually oil coming up past a cracked piston ring and into the combustion chamber.
The oil burns partially and comes out the exhaust system as blue smoke.
So blue smoke = ring job.
Ring job = new rings.
therefore,
Blue Smoke = New Rings!

Nice catch, Erick.
TheOptimist - August 20, 2008

linkbruin - August 20, 2008
Damn
BJ Upton = massive wanker.
ViolaHalo - August 20, 2008
look at those fans trying to get that ball, i hate fan interference
linkbruin - August 20, 2008
here comes the 8th inning
time for frankie to really earn a save and get more than 3 outs
UCIHalo - August 20, 2008
Let's go, ET.
TheOptimist - August 20, 2008
tampa is a cow town
linkbruin - August 20, 2008
and we have been the cow manure
Angel Aviator - August 20, 2008
Well there you go.
Sucks.
ViolaHalo - August 20, 2008
I blame 44Fan
Angel Aviator - August 20, 2008
Nuts.
TheOptimist - August 20, 2008
Ah shit!
Big Easy Halofan - August 20, 2008
GA gets those balls. >_>
TheOptimist - August 20, 2008
DAMN, WHY CAN'T THIS SERIES HAVE BEEN CANCELED BY THE STORM?
cardinalwraith - August 20, 2008
I'm over this
bullpen. So shitty.
ViolaHalo - August 20, 2008
Was there ever a doubt Halo Heaven?
Angel Aviator - August 20, 2008
tampa has been a late innings team all year
linkbruin - August 20, 2008
Gotta keep this tied, Jose
Big Easy Halofan - August 20, 2008
why not bring in frankie now?
UCIHalo - August 20, 2008
Because
Scioscia is unimaginative?
jimmuscomp - August 20, 2008
and no activity in bullpen
linkbruin - August 20, 2008
and it's the 21st century, where top notch relievers only throw when leading in the 9th
Big Easy Halofan - August 20, 2008
If your closer is your best pitcher...
this is the EXACT situation where you want to bring in your closer. To close down a rally. Bullpen “roles” are a joke and the managers that started slotting guys into 1 inning roles have screwed up the bullpens of the future.
jimmuscomp - August 20, 2008
I have been yelling that for years and I did it last night but once again it shows that a CL is OVER RATED
Angel Aviator - August 20, 2008
No. It shows that our CL is not being used correctly.
Stirrups - August 20, 2008
Just doing what 98% of MLB managers do .....CL is over rated crap
Angel Aviator - August 20, 2008
Stirrups - August 20, 2008
Yeah forget putting the team in the best situation to win a game
Angel Aviator - August 20, 2008
What?
jimmuscomp - August 20, 2008
By leaving the "best closer in basball" sitting in the pen as the game falls apart late
best closer in baseball is what has been said by others
Angel Aviator - August 20, 2008
Bullpen conspiracy against F-Rod???????
Angel Aviator - August 20, 2008
well at least vlad has a good arm
linkbruin - August 20, 2008
Suggesting he pitch linkbruin??
Angel Aviator - August 20, 2008

You have to be kidding me.
I hate the Rays right now. SO much. You have no fans. Look at the stands. LOOK at them. You people suck.
ViolaHalo - August 20, 2008
You have to be kidding me.
I hate the Angels so much right now. SO much. We have no bullpen. Look at the score. LOOK at it. You bullpen-arms suck.

Dear Frankie haters, dreaming for the future:
Please remember this series.
Stirrups - August 20, 2008
Ummm what am i remembering?
Angel Aviator - August 20, 2008
How well your replacements hopefuls did.
Most gossip around here is that only Frankie fails. Not much recognition of the liability that ALL closers fail.
Stirrups - August 20, 2008
WRONG! Thats not the talk. riddle me this ........why can't he be used when the game needed to be saved earlier
Angel Aviator - August 20, 2008
I do not disagree.
You are pushing that particular problem, and I agree with you. But I think that is Sosh’s fault. For most of the year, most of the others have been pushing the general rejection of Frankie altogether, for reasons not having anything to do with not working the 8th.
Stirrups - August 20, 2008
See thats my deal though. Dondo was asked to work 1 2/3 and he did come in after Oliver made a little bit of a mess
Angel Aviator - August 20, 2008
Escobar's closing next year. He did it before in Toronto.
WiHaloFan - August 20, 2008
yes he did,,,,,,,,,,,after he had arm trouble
Angel Aviator - August 20, 2008
why waste a guy who can eat innings and be productive as a starter for 3 outs
calikraze - August 20, 2008
Dondo asked to do what get how many outs? god forbid Frankie do that huh?
Angel Aviator - August 20, 2008
I completely agree with you.
If the closer’s so good why not use him when the game is on the line in the 8th? or the 7th, for that matter.
WiHaloFan - August 20, 2008
Again, relax. I do NOT disagree that Frankie needs to be used in the 8th as well.
If Dondo is being asked to pitch more thna 3 outs, Frankie most assuredly needs to do AT LEAST the same.
Stirrups - August 20, 2008
Relax?
WiHaloFan - August 20, 2008
Thank you Stirrups
Thats my biggest point ….. See a blog I posted awhile back about such subject and how making millions to get 3 outs is a joke
Angel Aviator - August 20, 2008
But where you and I may differ is that I think
this problem is Sosh’s fault, not Frankie’s.
Stirrups - August 20, 2008
Angel Aviator - August 20, 2008
P.S. - That was my 5000th Comment on HH!
I’m gonna throw myself a party! Bring your own beer. And your own women. If I don’t answer the door, leave them on the porch.
Stirrups - August 20, 2008
What modern closer?
Is asked to extend himself? The best ones – the ones not named Frankie are not being run out there before the 9th inning of most games. If you do, you risk the health of your best guy.
That may not be in-line with the belief that closers need to do more to earn their money, but it is Justin Speier, Scot Shields and Jose Arredondo’s job to be a bridge to K-Rod. Speier and Shields get their millions as well – why does K-Rod have to do their jobs?
BBFan1 - August 20, 2008
First year he hasn't gone more then 1 inning since he arrived !
Angel Aviator - August 20, 2008
Nathan / Rivera
Nathan has been asked to do it 2 of the last 3 times out, and Rivera has done it 9x this year
Frankie no habla
Angel Aviator - August 20, 2008
Oh and Papelbon 9 x
Frankie no Habla mucho trabajo
Angel Aviator - August 20, 2008
Well I can clearly see where you are coming from
But let’s see those other guys go out for two or three innings for the save, like you expect K-Rod to do so everytime he makes an appearance.
BBFan1 - August 20, 2008
See now your putting words in my mouth
Never said that! Just pointing out that there is often times that a save needs to happen prior to the start of the 9th inning. Looks like Francona, Gardenhire, and others see that as well.
Never said he had to go out and pitch every game at 1+ innings or more.
Angel Aviator - August 20, 2008
K-Rod
If you had no bullpen or at least have a bullpen that hasn’t done the job, you may have to bring your closer in as a necessity. I think that is more of the case with other teams than with the Angels.
Scioscia has done it in the past, where he needed K-Rod before the ninth inning and brought him in. But when you have two supposedly capable arms to serve as a bridge, why put more stress on K-Rod by expecting him to come in?
It seems you are painting the handling of K-Rod as the closer somehow babying him or giving him only opportunities where he can rack up saves without consquence.
BBFan1 - August 20, 2008
Bingo You got it now!
