Tex charges and takes the ball on the grass, double-clutches his throw to the plate to get the runner coming from third and changes his mind. He throws the ball to Santana covering 1B but the ball gets by as Upton runs through 1B. kendrick picks up the ball beyond 1B and tags Upton, and ump calls Upton out for making an attempt to 2B, which was not correct. Maddon comes out to argue and gets tossed.
Well, I cannot argue judgment. Mine would have been different.
I just ran the replay on the DVR. Upton was running directly up the foul line. In his final stride to touch 1B, Santana tries to catch the throw from Tex and step back to touch the bag, but he is still 2 feet down the line towards home from the bag itself. And his left foot is about to touch the foul line. This forces Upton to flail and hop to his left as his right leg must now go around Santana and reach back to touch the bag. Upton is now offbalance and runnign on the grass, wheras two strides earlier he was on the foul line. As Upton comes to a stop, his track takes him arcing from 1 foot on the grass, back to 6 inches on the infield dirt as he reaches the back of the infield. He stops, facing Kendrick who is in foul territory.
Yeah, it probably crossed his mind for a flash of a second, but weak sauce, man, weak sauce.
I thought he made a faint at 2nd even on reply. Understand Maddon being upset but not enough to get kicked out. I think that had a lot to do with Joe sitting Upton for not hustling and now he was going to stick up for his guy. Smart man Maddon is
The bullpen blows it again, and this one’s on Scioscia for failing to recognize that Shields has been awful lately, and had nothing when the inning started.
if it’s clear the guy has NO idea where the strikezone is pull him, what’s stupid is letting him walk another guy and then pulling him after he FINALLY seemed to find the strikezone
Are the Angels going to collapse like back in 95.
I’m so sick and tired of all these BS.
Team was bound to have a bad couple of weeks. Can’t win every damn game.
Shields throws ball after ball after ball after ball and he’s left in there to blow the game and for some reason Mathis is starting when Naps has an OPS advantage of OVER 1300 points in August. Yes you read that correctly 1300 points.
The Rays are good, and injured, but we’ve caught them at times when we’re cold.
If we’re cold in the playoffs we could lose to the Nats.
We’ll be fine and this team is still the most complete in MLB.
Let's go Black MAgic!!

Upton chops a high bouncer towards 1B.
Here's the rule:
© He is tagged, when the ball is alive, while off his base. EXCEPTION: A batter-runner cannot be tagged out after overrunning or oversliding first base if he returns immediately to the base;
The umps interpretation is that starting to move towards second and the changing your mind IS NOT returning immediately to the base.

he did not go directly back to first base, he just stopped and then got tagged

Andyman - August 19, 2008
Alright a strike!
TheTypingFiend - August 19, 2008
bases loaded, no outs.
great.
howiestheman - August 19, 2008
Walk isnt so bad at this point
need outs or this thing can get out of hand in a hurry
Angel Aviator - August 19, 2008
AND HE'S STILL UP THERE
Scioscia just lost this game.
scareduck - August 19, 2008
Please observe.
Option #1 for the post-Frankie era is now on display.
Stirrups - August 19, 2008
TRIPLE PLAY
how bout it
deejayelleseven - August 19, 2008
If F_Rod is the best why not go with him right here right now or once Mathis craped it
Angel Aviator - August 19, 2008
Good Q
you’ll have to ask Mike S about that one.
But don’t count on a clear answer.
TheTypingFiend - August 19, 2008
attaboy Shields!
walkemloaded! uh oh…rays announcers back to whining about his last AB…
K3YEROUT - August 19, 2008
time to get shields out
this is ridiculous!
howiestheman - August 19, 2008
error #12 by Mathis
12…
12 errors in one season by the catcher
hk47 - August 19, 2008
and he's still playing...... why?
howiestheman - August 19, 2008
Because he is so valuable for his defense.
Stirrups - August 19, 2008
oh yeah. my bad.
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
/angry yell
howiestheman - August 19, 2008
If Scot really wants to help secure this win
He needs to fake pulling up lame so that we get a free pitching replacement.
Stirrups - August 19, 2008
what's the situation
vlad IS my man - August 19, 2008
Bases loaded, nobody out, Shields can't find the plate
scareduck - August 19, 2008

K3YEROUT - August 19, 2008
"Shields has NO idea right now!"
rays announcers hit that one on the head!
K3YEROUT - August 19, 2008
Save was when Mathis threw the ball away
why not bring F-Rod in….
Angel Aviator - August 19, 2008
bullpen has stunk recently
team has lost 4 of 5…coicidence? I think not
hk47 - August 19, 2008

BoulderBrian - August 19, 2008
11 balls, 4 strikes

scareduck - August 19, 2008
Not really. 8 of those "balls" were in a different time zone.
Stirrups - August 19, 2008
One down, Soch is taking him out
Andyman - August 19, 2008
okay, just two more
hk47 - August 19, 2008
Whew. Got the easy one. The headcase who guesses wrong.
Be gone, Scot. Be long gone.
Stirrups - August 19, 2008
Can someone please tell Scioscia that Oliver has a reverse split?!
He keeps bringing him in against lefties when he’s been much better against righties.
cardinalwraith - August 19, 2008
Dear God
I really like Mike mostly, but there are some things on which he is just ineducable.
scareduck - August 19, 2008
So what I'd like to know is when you're better on one side or the other...
At what point to you try the other side? Or do you just get stuck facing on situation only?
melvintoast - August 19, 2008
k3yerout= Upton
wow…not sure all umps would have had the balls to ring him up right there!
K3YEROUT - August 19, 2008

I hope Oliver comes in and gets a DP on 1 pitch.
melvintoast - August 19, 2008

K3YEROUT - August 19, 2008
I meant strike 3
melvintoast - August 19, 2008
Oliver will clean this up folks, don't worry.
Mathis, WOW BAD!
44FAN - August 19, 2008
how come mathis gets a pass?

Mayheminthehood - August 19, 2008
Let's go Oliver

TheTypingFiend - August 19, 2008

Angel Aviator - August 19, 2008

deejayelleseven - August 19, 2008

And Ervin's potential win is about to be lost.
cardinalwraith - August 19, 2008

melvintoast - August 19, 2008
Yep
Stirrups - August 19, 2008
You're forgiven.
cardinalwraith - August 19, 2008
No F-Rod ??
This is the reason I think a CLOSER is overrated. Why not have the closer get it done here if he is so damn good
Angel Aviator - August 19, 2008
Bingo bingo, you are correct.
cardinalwraith - August 19, 2008
Comming in with this situation is much tougher then starting a inning (9) with lead
Angel Aviator - August 19, 2008
good point!
wallispdub1 - August 19, 2008
I totally agree
WiHaloFan - August 19, 2008
Even I concur with this one.
This is EXACTLY why you have a Frankie.
Stirrups - August 19, 2008
Right use his ass
That is why guys like Lyle and Goose got HOF status
Angel Aviator - August 19, 2008
This is really a problem with thinking throughout the game though
By the same token though, Oliver would deserve this Blown Save without it being called bs.
TheTypingFiend - August 19, 2008
Prime example of why the Save is such an over-rated statistic...
Oliver comes in with bases loaded and one out in a one run game vs Frankie coming in to start the 9th in a one run game…hmmm
K3YEROUT - August 19, 2008
whats the count
vlad IS my man - August 19, 2008
Glad to see some agree
Angel Aviator - August 19, 2008
there goes Ervins Win =(
deejayelleseven - August 19, 2008
way to lose it, bullpen/mathis.
you all fail.
howiestheman - August 19, 2008
There goes the lead.
Hey, remember when we were the best team in baseball?
cardinalwraith - August 19, 2008

Angel Aviator - August 19, 2008

Los Angeles de Anaheim - August 19, 2008
good question
howiestheman - August 19, 2008
so u could get your F bomb out of the way for August! :)
K3YEROUT - August 19, 2008
that’s not a rhetorical question… someone please answer me… Where are Dondo/Shields? Tired?
Los Angeles de Anaheim - August 19, 2008
Oh man. You MISSED Shields?
Stirrups - August 19, 2008
apparently so... just looked at gameday
Los Angeles de Anaheim - August 19, 2008
shields sucked. and dondo isn't in because Soth wants us to lose.
howiestheman - August 19, 2008
Yeah.. He woke up this morning and said... If I feel like losing today.
melvintoast - August 19, 2008
cause shields sucks
actually is it just me or does the defense always suck it up when shields pitches
UCIHalo - August 19, 2008

Mayheminthehood - August 19, 2008
Sorry Ervin...your last two starts you've watched shit fall apart from the dugout, erasing your Win.
Mayheminthehood - August 19, 2008
Well it's probably his own fault
for not pitching complete games.
He should look to CC Sabathia as an example.
TheTypingFiend - August 19, 2008
I tell you what... Seems like the Bullpen depth chart is upside down
Should be Loux to Oliver to Josie Wales
melvintoast - August 19, 2008

cardinalwraith - August 19, 2008
F You Mister Soch and Shields you sux azz
Angel Aviator - August 19, 2008
It's a trap.
melvintoast - August 19, 2008
Epic FAIL for Oliver!
K3YEROUT - August 19, 2008
inning would be over if mathis wasn't such a loser
UCIHalo - August 19, 2008
Or maybe if Shield had thought to throw
some consecutive strikes.
TheTypingFiend - August 19, 2008
Good night, Gracie
The bullpen blows it again, and this one’s on Scioscia for failing to recognize that Shields has been awful lately, and had nothing when the inning started.
scareduck - August 19, 2008
This is getting to be annoying. I'm getting in the car.
melvintoast - August 19, 2008
i'm blaming Mathis too
apparently, he thinks his outfielders need to play catch, not the guy he SHOULD be throwing too.
Mathis.. you suck. i couldn’t care less about our record when you play. I will bet every cent in my bank account that NONE of that is because of you.
howiestheman - August 19, 2008
Willie fucking Aybar!?

LOL
howiestheman - August 19, 2008
oh joy
we have our 7-8-9 hitters up next inning.
go to bed folks. game over.
howiestheman - August 19, 2008
Yeah its his fault
You kidding me? What about that horseshit display by Shields or Mathis throwing away the out
Angel Aviator - August 19, 2008
had Mathis recorded the out that guy isn't up to knock in the runs
Angel Aviator - August 19, 2008
If Scioscia had yanked Shields after it was obvious he had nothing
Mathis’ screwup doesn’t happen.
scareduck - August 19, 2008
that happened on the 2nd batter
you don’t pull a guy after 1 hitter. that’s stupid.
howiestheman - August 19, 2008
that's not stupid
if it’s clear the guy has NO idea where the strikezone is pull him, what’s stupid is letting him walk another guy and then pulling him after he FINALLY seemed to find the strikezone
MH252525 - August 19, 2008
because it's one hitter
he might find during the second hitter, who actually laid down the bunt.
howiestheman - August 19, 2008
you have a one run lead
who is more likely to throw strikes
a) a fresh arm
b) someone that just threw 4 balls that Mathis was lucky to catch
seems pretty clear to me, the Angels are fighting for home field advantage in the playoffs. If a guy looks like shit get him out of there.
MH252525 - August 19, 2008
They still drop a sac bunt. Why would Mathis not throw it away if Shields is out?
Angel Aviator - August 19, 2008
Okay, fine
We get some other outcome. But Shields and his walk-o-matic are the hell out of the game.
scareduck - August 19, 2008
this is some seriously annoying shit
UCIHalo - August 19, 2008
Well...
Our offense sucks again. Only this time, our bullpen sucks too. And so does our defense. I’m pissed.
tbone_cutter - August 19, 2008
Too bad you didn’t strike out the previous batter, asstard
Los Angeles de Anaheim - August 19, 2008
why didn't you strike out the previous batter a hole
UCIHalo - August 19, 2008
that's it.
DFA the entire team.

stick a fork in the Angels
no WS…. the world is ending tomorrow
Los Angeles de Anaheim - August 19, 2008

scareduck - August 19, 2008

KendrickExperience - August 19, 2008

Im just saying lets just worry about what we have on our plate now instead of looking ahead .
deejayelleseven - August 19, 2008
1 hit
3 runs on one freaking hit. 6 outs from the win and your pitching is surrendering 3 runs on 1 freaking hit and you refuse to use your stud closer.
Utterly beyond belief.
Stirrups - August 19, 2008
This is why the SAVE STAT is CRAP
I say it all the time and especially to Zu Long,,,,,,,,,where is that guy anyway
Angel Aviator - August 19, 2008
Where is Rollie Fingers or Sparky Lyle or Bruce Sutter
oh yeah the Hall of Fame…………they came into games when it wasn’t the 9th and exactly like the situation that Shields had created
Angel Aviator - August 19, 2008
Makes you want to SCREAM!

i think that might lead the league
UCIHalo - August 19, 2008

Angel Aviator - August 19, 2008
Yep. Mathis at 12
now leads the Dodgers’ Martin, who is stuck at 9.

scareduck - August 19, 2008
this game has more than enough blame to go around
Their Shields had an 87 mph fastball the entire game and they only got 2 runs.
Soth took Shields out at the weirdest time.
And Mathis proved once again that he should be the backup catcher.
MH252525 - August 19, 2008
that was right down the middle, Juan
don’t worry about swinging.

Angel Aviator - August 20, 2008
Scioscia for blame of the game
Shields throws ball after ball after ball after ball and he’s left in there to blow the game and for some reason Mathis is starting when Naps has an OPS advantage of OVER 1300 points in August. Yes you read that correctly 1300 points.
FUCK YOU Soth
MH252525 - August 19, 2008
how about F U Shields?
ladybug - August 19, 2008
Shields certainly deserves blame
But I’m more annoyed we had to endure that much of him when it was CLEAR he had no idea about the strikezone.
MH252525 - August 19, 2008

The Rays are good, and injured, but we’ve caught them at times when we’re cold.
If we’re cold in the playoffs we could lose to the Nats.
We’ll be fine and this team is still the most complete in MLB.
