Yawn. Check out Garland's gamelogs during his career.
Every year he has games just like this one, where he gives up tons of hits. Hey, hits happen.
But after this season the Angels will need to let Garland leave via free agency. His K/9 rate (which has always been low) is only 3.83 this year. Not only are the strikeouts down, but his control is off; a K/BB ratio of just 1.31. LD% is a career worst 24%. The saving grace has been a career best GB/FB ratio of 1.75. He turns 30 next year, so velocity is likely to drop.
Gotta hope he can deliver some decent starts in the 2nd half, but a long-term deal would be a bad move.
Garland has definitely been a solid contributor to the Angels' 1st place standing.
He’s been a very important addition. However, I’m thinking more in terms of 2009 and beyond. With Escobar not back until the All-Star break in 2009 (at the earliest), the Angels front office must assess what to do about the rotation in 2009. Do they re-sign Garland? (I say no, but the Angels may be thinking otherwise). Do they entrust a rotation spot to one of their own? (i.e. Adenhart) Or do they bid in free agency for a top-of-the-rotation talent like a Sabathia or a Sheets?
He ain’t no $12 million man, and we could probably suffer through Moseley long enough to either get Escy back or to get Adenhart’s head screwed back on right. But there has been talk about the team acquiring some kind of MLB-ready swingman by the trade deadline, which wouldn’t be bad (as long as it wasn’t a panicky, Brett Tomko-type of move).
nice performance by O'Day, though
good to see some good relief

BigBangRobbDawgg - July 11, 2008
an ump with 20/20 vision would be nice though...
BigBangRobbDawgg - July 11, 2008
Or consistent vision
TheTypingFiend - July 11, 2008

Let Garland walk

red floyd - July 12, 2008
we could NEVER afford CC
KingF15h - July 12, 2008
Plus there's no way this Angels Front Office
Has 2 Lefties in the rotation.
TheTypingFiend - July 12, 2008
