MLB 2008 Player Draft Thread

The Angels don't have a pick until deep into the 2nd round (74th overall) of today's amateur player draft, as Minnesota gets our 1st round pick (27th overall) for us signing Torii Hunter, so ...yawn.

The draft remains a terribly inexact science - just look at the laughable "analysis" on MLB's own LIVE DRAFT TRACKER writeups...

  • ...though it's unlikely he'll play anything but first as a pro...
  • How high he gets drafted depends on how highly people project what he can become.
  • At first glance, he doesn't stand out. But then you watch him play for a little and can't help but be impressed.

NOTE: Those are NOT blog comments, those are MLB's paid writers discussing top picks. Really! ... In the draft order, the Angels have the 105th and 139th picks, plus a supplemental Post-Round 3 pick at #112 for being stiffed by last year's Matt Harvey selection.

ANGELS PICK #1: High School RHP Tyler Chatwood - Myspace Scouting Report

ANGELS PICK #2: Junior College RHP Ryan Chaffee - Ryan's FaceBook Page

ANGELS PICK #3: High School OF Zachary Cone - A Trojan-Lovin' MySpacer!!

ANGELS PICK # 4: Junior College LHP Jeffrey Boshers - Goes by the name of "Buddy" on MySpace

ANGELS PICK # 5: High School OF Khiry Cooper - Dude is already posing on his MySpace page with an Angels hat (scroll down left column, 2nd photo, presumably with his mom there). He is also the first member of the Angels organization born in the 1990s (1-16-90).

ANGELS PICK #6: High School OF Joshua Blanco - Pick # 199 in the draft.

The depressing LINK -TO- THE history of the Angels' 1st Round picks.

How high he gets drafted depends on how highly people project what he can become.

hmmm.

Pretty sure the same could be said of me.

EXACTLY

BASEBALL DRAFT EXPERT = Lord of the Rings /Star Trek Convention Attendees.

Prep analysis is the line in the sand that I will just NOT CROSS … once a baseball fan is into the minor leagues TOO deep it is the deepest nerd abyss … And scary how serious these people take it when they have ZERO f’n expertise beyond coaching little league…

So, what position do we need?
i would say

we need.:

Younger OFs that hit for power

Corner Infield….....

PITCHING PITCHING PITCHING…....cause you can never have too much of that

and oh….

YOUNGER OF’s THAT CAN HIT FOR POWER!!!!!!!!!!!

our 1st pick

has absolutely none of those qualities….unless they keep him as a pitcher…which my guess says no.

thats why my middle part says PITCHING PITCHING PITCHING

because you can never really have too much of it

sometimes i wonder how they decide who gets to be "analysts.....

because im fairly certain i could do all they are doing, and then some…...i find i say things or think things and then like 20 min later…...someone says the same thing…..

im sure many of you feel the same.

getting close to the Twins pick in our place
Brian Matsuz

We drafted this guy in 2005 and did not meet his $1.5 million demand. He went to the Orioles this year.

Harvey still makes me sad. He killed it at UNC.

yea I think the Angels would do both of those over if they could
Love the new pop-up, pop-out banner advertisements.

Makes me not want to buy these products x 100. What will they think of next? If you don’t watch the ad it will crash your computer or deny access to the site you want to look at?

(Bitch once rule, off day rant.)

Firefox takes care of that
ad block and no script.....my best friends
Yep

Though you need to enable script now for both HH and SBN :(

Twins took....Carlos Gutierrez pitcher from Miami......with their/angels pic.
So MLB called me at random today. Here is how it went...

MLB Analyst Recruiter: “Now swinging our attention out West, this just in, the Los Angeles Angels also have a team in Major League Baseball, which seeks to make significant inroads on the traditional hunting grounds of the Oakland A’s. We have with us now Stirrups, our ESPN draft analyst who has been studying the Angels’ organization and has plenty to report on this year’s draft activity. Stirrups?”

Stirrups The Analyst: “Thanks. Yes, there are plenty of exciting things in the works today, coming out of the Angels front office. Almost everything they do in this draft will be with first-time members of their organization, and that gives every indication of catching the rest of their division off-guard.”

MAR: “So how soon do you think the Angels will come out firing today?”

STA: “Well, the Angels this year don’t get to pick until the 105th slot. They have a long history, without interruption, of not picking until their turn comes up. So I think it will be pretty clear that they will pick when their turns comes up this year as well. And this year, that means they will pick 105th.”

MAR: “So, you are predicting the Angels to be waiting until the 2nd round before they jump into this year’s draft?”

STA: “Absolutely. Look, the only way they fail to pick in the 105th slot is if they pull off some kind of deal with another team and move that spot up or down. If that happens, they definitely WILL be picking somewhere else.”

MAR: “Wow, great stuff! So now let’s move to the actual pick. Who do you think they take? What’s their greatest need now? What hole are they going to try and fill?”

STA: “Look, we all know that the Angels run the risk of ending up in terrible shape when it comes to keeping the minor league system stocked. That’s why this draft is so important. Without the draft, and without free agent signings outside the draft, this organization struggles to bring in the fresh blood which is so vital to their program. So it’s up and down the board for this club. They need lots of everything. I would bet that they turn their attention to players not signed elsewhere, as those make up the bulk of players they will be able to sign and use to fill positional needs where they are thin right now. My sources inside the organization – IN THE WAR ROOM! – inform me that they have already decided to start with their very first pick.”

MAR: “And, finally, how many of this year’s draftees do you think might end up making the show for them?”

STA: “Oh, man, this one is always tough. And it changes from year to year. This is a pretty good year for them, though, based on reports we have coming in, that there are kids on their radar that they truly think have some possibility of making the big leagues. I would not be surprised if the first kid they select today is one of those.”

MAR: “Excellent, and thanks for taking time for us on this hectic, and electric, draft day here at MLB! Goob, back to you…”

Where does this 105th come from?

The Angels’ first pick was 74th overall in the second round.

Since when

Can draft picks be traded?

i think that stirrups found a long-lost seal of cocaine
just pulling crap out of the air, and grabbing text randomly from the blog header.

kinda like the real mlb analysts.

However, true story: I do happen to know where an entire kilo of hash is buried on the Cambridge campus. I had a long-time friend and colleague who attended there describe to me precisely where he buried it. He has since passed away due to AIDS, so I know he never got back in time to claim it.

Tyler Chatwood

From my town of Redlands. The Angels have drafted players from the same high school in the past (Brett Martinez and Josh Cowles). They were both “organizational” players.

Chatwood is a very good pitcher who can throw in the low 90s, but he’s on the small side. A lot of people see him as a super-utility type. I’ll be interested to find out where the Angels plan on playing him. He’s accepted a scholarship to UCLA, so they’ll have to offer him decent money, but I’ll bet he signs.

I should've said...

low-to-mid 90s, as he does hit as high as 95.

Here are his stats from his senior year

Pitching

W L ERA IP K H BAA
9 1 0.81 51.2 95 23 .127

Tyler Chatwood

a pitcher out of Redlands, CA

Solid pick

I’ve seen this kid play and he’s a stud. He’s played against some quality competition and excelled. He’s already said that as long as he was selected in the top 6 rounds he’d sign. He said that UCLA was already aware of this when he committed as a junior.

Second pick

Juco pitcher Ryan Chaffee. RHP 6’2’’ 200lbs.

so.....pitching it is.....might as well stick with the blueprint.
Sick

I’m a Bills fan too.

Threadjack

James Shields got tossed from the game against the Sawx today and faces a possible suspension. Guess who his next scheduled start is against? I would not complain if the Angels didn’t have to face him.

haha.

i’ve watched it like 20 times on mlb.com. nice duck by coco, but he got messed up on the ground, taking punches from gomes, iwamura, and crawford, or at least those are the obvious ones.

This brawl could be good for us in a couple different ways. the Rays lose one of their top starts, as well as their DH, and possibly even their stud outfielder and 3B. Plus, the Sox are bound to lose some people for a few games, possibly cooling them off.

Along that line of thinking, then it would have been better if Shields had connected.

He would probably bust up his hand and he would be done for the year, and Crisp would have broken a jaw or nose and been done for a month or two. Although, that latter event might have improved the Sox lineup.

Gomes with some ground and pound that would make a Gracie smile.

Anyone catch what Caveman and Manny were jawin about in the dugout? I’m sure every frame’s been analyzed by now on NESPN. Manny seems like one of those dudes who picks a fight then jumps behind a mob and yells “YOU LUCKY THEY HOLDIN’ ME BACK!”.

Shields will probably appeal and might still make his start Tuesday. Maybe, maybe not.

welp.......so far im pretty spot on with my assessment of what the team needs

tooting my own horn…...toot toot

so far

we’ve drafted 2 RHP, 2 LHP, and 2 “CF”.

rev

thanks for doing the updates with myspace pages

very cool seeing the Angels of tomorrow.

We couldn't pick anyone with a last name starting after the letter "C"

I like the strategery

Looks like

The kid with the Angels hat on was already a Halos fan. The comment under the pic is from 2007.

haha.

i wonder if the kid knows he’s now being stalked by a bunch of angels fans. we should all add these guys as friends, see what they do about it. lmao.

I think they would appreciate it

I know Kelvim likes to hear from me but i don’t overdo it…
