A knuckleballer strikes out a batter, but the loose ball allows the K-victim to reach first base. With two outs and the bases loaded, to swing a the very first pitch following that situation (which you did, yielding a routine fly-out), a batter would either be:
Since Gary Matthews Jr. has played in the big leagues for quite some time, we can assume that he had the intellect necessary to acquire an above average baseball aptitude and that, therefore, he is not stupid. And that leaves us with Matthews being selfish. And that conclusion would explain a lot about his inability to contribute to this team - he is swinging for the statistical fences without the requisite contributions to the team's offensive output.
Gary: Evidence of your selfish chumpage is becoming more apparent. Do something about it - involve yourself in the pitch-to-pitch needs of your team or waive your no-trade clause and go somewhere else where these occasional glory-seeking ways produce your desired results.

norcaliangelsfan - June 3, 2008
???
That doesn’t sound right.
Zu Long - June 3, 2008
i dont think it is
howiestheman - June 3, 2008
and its not
in 08, he had 0 errors in 2 games at 3B
in 07, he had 16 errors in 74 games at 3B
howiestheman - June 3, 2008
and in the majors..
this year, he’s had 2 errors in 21 games
howiestheman - June 3, 2008
oh really.....i remember 2 games that Bwood had errors in a couple weeks ago
norcaliangelsfan - June 3, 2008
Well, you're correct that they had the same error rate.
Both now have 2 errors in 14 games started, 21 games played. The difference is really Wood’s .800 ZR vs. Q’s .700 ZR. Wood’s is terrific for a 3B. Q’s is middling to bad.
Zu Long - June 3, 2008
Are you effing kidding me?

look it up......B-w00d has 2 errors, and a 946 fielding
norcaliangelsfan - June 3, 2008
in 21 games
thats not an error every other game, as you stated
howiestheman - June 3, 2008
that he was starting
atleast thats what i wanted to say lol…......either way that was Q’s second error of the year as well…...and with the way Q’s been hitting…....that gives him an advantage over wood right now….....even though i know B-wood is a better overall player and will be…...right now…..Q is doing his thing…...except for that one play
norcaliangelsfan - June 3, 2008
I would agree that the one error does not mitigate Q's impressive offensive performance thus far.
Zu Long - June 3, 2008
and i'll of course argue that lack of playing time
will continue to eff with Wood’s progress
howiestheman - June 3, 2008
He's gotten the same amount of playing time as Q though.
Zu Long - June 3, 2008
but Q has waaaaaay more big league experience
howiestheman - June 3, 2008
True.
But we’re trying to win. Wood’s getting his shots. I agree that it’d be preferable to have him down in AAA, but that hasn’t been possible with our injuries.
Zu Long - June 3, 2008
i know that, but it
doesnt change my position.
given his obvious progress (as we’ve all argeed), he could be hitting pretty well right now, especially against these craphole pitchers
howiestheman - June 3, 2008
Q is the same now.
As I pointed out above. As I said, the difference is that Wood gets to 80% of the balls going through 3rd base, while Q gets 70% of them. And 10% is Gigantic.
Zu Long - June 3, 2008
well....
woods lack of offense is troubling as well…......atleast quinlan is swinging the bat lately
norcaliangelsfan - June 3, 2008
see above
howiestheman - June 3, 2008
Yup. The difference in their BA is close to 18% (absolute)
and that’s even more important considering that 1% in BA is bigger than 1% in ZR.
Zu Long - June 3, 2008
beltre says: look how to throw to first

norcaliangelsfan - June 3, 2008
But he also just came up, and given how unlikely it is that we back around to him
We need the D.
Zu Long - June 3, 2008
i guess pitch counts dont matter much anymore
norcaliangelsfan - June 3, 2008
Dick Wood probably best at SS
but hey neither me or the other drunk Ozzie Guillen are managing the Halos
highlandhalo - June 3, 2008
nice play Mathis
Funke5ive - June 3, 2008
nice play wood
Funke5ive - June 3, 2008
how good was it
would q have done it. if not than mike made the right call.
UCIHalo - June 3, 2008
Probably not.
Zu Long - June 3, 2008
By which I mean
Sosh made the right call.
Zu Long - June 3, 2008
nice Wood!!!
SCHalo - June 3, 2008
Nice play by Wood!
case closed…love the 2 hopper!
K3YEROUT - June 3, 2008
kotchman is the only reason we dont have 9 errors today
Carl Johnson - June 3, 2008
nice play kotch
Funke5ive - June 3, 2008
nice play at both ends
wings - June 3, 2008
Q doesnt make that play, Nice play Dick!
SoCalWine - June 3, 2008
you cant say that......you dont know
norcaliangelsfan - June 3, 2008
then good job scioscia
UCIHalo - June 3, 2008
ha!
no effing way Q makes that play
howiestheman - June 3, 2008
but does Q make a better throw? i think so
norcaliangelsfan - June 3, 2008
bu Q doesnt get the out
as we’ve already seen
howiestheman - June 3, 2008
wood and Q = same number of errors, and same number of games at 3b....done and done
norcaliangelsfan - June 3, 2008
this could go on forever
howiestheman - June 3, 2008
lol, no......
i like em both…...and whoever is in is who i want to succeed…...but people bash Q and hes been a pretty consistant member of the team for 5 years now…...he isnt all hyped up like wood is…....he just does his job…......but i want B-wood to be successful too
norcaliangelsfan - June 3, 2008
You really shouldn't bait him like that though.
Is it really necessary to put down Q just because Wood made a good play?
Zu Long - June 3, 2008
nice pick Krotch!
Red - June 3, 2008
sweet
highlandhalo - June 3, 2008
good job joe!
Funke5ive - June 3, 2008

Rev, they found your (D)
K3YEROUT - June 3, 2008
that was half Kotch though
highlandhalo - June 3, 2008
Kotch is probably 60% of the reason our error rate has been as low as it is.
Zu Long - June 3, 2008
Kotch is God with the glove
He can pick em with the best
highlandhalo - June 3, 2008
that wasn’t much of a play for Kotch! The throw was a 2 hopper to first
K3YEROUT - June 3, 2008
109 pitches for Colonel
nice job tonight Hokie Joe! Outstanding! Damn, if he isn’t careful he may start the all star game!
K3YEROUT - June 3, 2008
Don't get ahead of yourself K3
It has to be a Yankee or a Red Sock
highlandhalo - June 3, 2008

K3YEROUT - June 3, 2008
Run Boy King ... Run!!!!
highlandhalo - June 3, 2008
BTW- it's probably the change in velocity.
Bedard was throwing 93-94.
Dickey throwing in the 70’s. That’s a big adjustment.
Zu Long - June 3, 2008
Dickey’s ball is floating all over the place…he has a nasty one tonight….

Bad jump.
Zu Long - June 3, 2008
Also, great catch and throw.
Zu Long - June 3, 2008
he was out by a mile, too
Chone's Chonies - June 3, 2008
Yeah, it was mostly the jump.
Dickey isn’t getting called for his Balks though, so it makes it tough to get a good lead.
Zu Long - June 3, 2008
momentum is shifting
time for a 1-2-3 inning
yeswecan - June 3, 2008

he was just gonna WP him over anyway. i worry about the way we think sometimes.
Carl Johnson - June 3, 2008
YOU CANT STEAL ON A KNUCKLEBALL????

anaheim angels - June 3, 2008
1 run game?
Check.
No other standouts?
Q and Mouse were good but Q had the error. Joe was good and the errors weren’t his fault, but I say Check.
1-2-3 inning?
Check.
Struck out the side in dominant fashion?
Big ol’ freaking CHECK.
I’d say that’s affirmative. K-Rod for Panther.
Zu Long - June 3, 2008
i dont sound so stupid now suggesting krod for panther
do i?
anaheim angels - June 3, 2008
It's one inning, dude
highlandhalo - June 3, 2008
i know, but when i suggested krod get some consideration for panthers
yesterday, pretty much everyone was dismissing the issue
anaheim angels - June 3, 2008
I suggested this last year ...
and it all fell on deaf ears. I suggested that the closer should get a half a panther for every “real” save, ie, a proper tight game, so that the closer should get the panthers he deserved. Nobody listened to me so f-- that theory.
highlandhalo - June 3, 2008
K Rod
Sexson, Cairo, Betancourt? You must be joking.
Maicer 2 2 out RBI’s
hauldog - June 3, 2008
That's one for you zu
My theory is they are grooming Arredondo to be the closer for the future, they will pay K-Rod what he wants, and they will ship Shields off and his $5 mill to be the lynchpin to be a closer somewhere else.
But what do I know. I am drunk, and have already admitted to being so.
highlandhalo - June 3, 2008
okay i was on the fence before......but i now i say
PAY THE MAN
norcaliangelsfan - June 3, 2008
I'm starting to agree that we should resign Frankie
Los Angeles de Anaheim - June 3, 2008

tanana40 - June 3, 2008
which is 2 more wins than the M's have
how awesome is that
MH252525 - June 3, 2008
It is awesome
But half of those saves are of the “cheap save” variety.
K-rod still keeps me on valium. Having said that, he is pitching some mighty tidy final innings lately.

Amen to that
Figgy back soon I hear. That makes us a complete team.
