Panther of the Game: NOMINATE YOUR CHOICE ... with that terrible throw to 3rd base, did John Lackey take himself out of the Panthah cage before the voting even began?
And the winner is...

Panther of the Game: Erick Aybar
His Defense saved Lackey's trouble 1st inning, his hit in the 8th brought home Figgy to tie the game and then he scored the winning run. Glove, bat, feet don't fail me now, on a night when Lackey was lights-out before he made a lightheaded error, Erick Aybar was in the middle of the victory, start to finish.

imma say Aybar.........
2-4…....run scored…....fab defense….....
norcaliangelsfan - June 23, 2008
and i'll add..........go ahead run scored
norcaliangelsfan - June 23, 2008
Still has to be Lackey
KRod, Figgy for dropping down the bunt that started the rally, and Aybar are all close
tanana40 - June 23, 2008
Aybar, imo.
Defense, 2-4, smart baserunning on the error and eventually scored the winning run.
TheOptimist - June 23, 2008
Lackey
8IP. People just do not do that anymore.
hauldog - June 23, 2008
Lackey
honorable mention – Aybar—anytime your starting pitcher goes 8 and only 2 runs score, THATS PANTHA
fangraphs agrees
Los Angeles de Anaheim - June 23, 2008
Lackey
Says Fangraphs, with honorary vice-Panther as the Admiral.
scareduck - June 23, 2008
boston loses!
panther i think has to go to lackey, although aybar is close.
and btw, of frankies 23 pitches, the nats managed to touch (foul off) only 2 of them
anaheim angels - June 23, 2008
Lackey did'nt hit a grand slam homerun so.........
Aybar deserves one I guess.
44FAN - June 23, 2008
yeah it's definitely big john
for sure
AHaloInSF - June 23, 2008
the admiral
big time heads up taking 2nd on that single in the 8th, w/o that he doesnt score on GA’s basehit
halofan4life - June 23, 2008
off topic.........
but nice 5 game lead the halos got going on…......i like it!
norcaliangelsfan - June 23, 2008
Big John all the way
Angels hitters failed to hit a HR, despite Bergmann having given up 11 HRs in just 53.2 innings coming into this game.
Hopefully it’s a lesson learned for the Angels not to take the Nats too lightly.
Fan Since 1981 - June 23, 2008
off topic
i did some number crunching tonight on big john
career k’s – 977 (thru tonight)
career w’s – 84 (thru tonight)
he’ll for certain hit 1000 career k’s this year, and if he stays lights out all year i think there is an outside shot of him getting to 100 career wins this year, does anybody else see this budding into a possibly HOF career? or am i thinking about this too soon?
halofan4life - June 23, 2008
way, WAAAAAY too early.
If it’s still too early to be discussing Curt Schilling’s HoF ballot, it’s far too early to discuss Lackey’s next 10-15 years.
shiftyeyedgoat - June 23, 2008
Too soon
hauldog - June 23, 2008
alright
i have a habit of thinking wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy to far ahead
halofan4life - June 23, 2008
It's not too early to start thinking about him in terms of Angels lore, however ...
Apart from one Cy season by the Big Fart, Thunder has been by far the most dominating right-handed SP we’ve had since Mike Witt. Not sure how his numbers stack up to Witt’s at this stage of his career but I’ve got to guess Lackey is better.
Also, the guy, as a 23-year-old, won became the first rookie to win a Game 7 of a World Series since 1909.
Still brings a tear to the eye …
highlandhalo - June 23, 2008
Lackey
perhaps Kotchman for hitting the pitching hard all night and making some nice plays.
shiftyeyedgoat - June 23, 2008
Big Thunder's crap throw
Came after a tasty catch, don’t forget.
Zoe Necrosis - June 23, 2008
I gotta go Figgy
For manufacturing that run. That was the singular effort of the game.
Stirrups - June 23, 2008
Lackey
HaloDutch - June 23, 2008
Tough call this one
Going with Big John despite the throwing error and the fact that shutting down the Nationals is nothing to boast about.
Props to:
Aybar: Great D, great hustle
GA: Game-winning hit and an SB from Old Man River
Desmond: Manufactured run, nice D
highlandhalo - June 23, 2008
Big John is the panther
with Figgy (wreaking havoc on the basepaths in the 7th) and GA (GWRBI) getting a tip of the hat as well.
Clip Show - June 23, 2008
I'm going with Aybar.
John was good, but giving up the go-ahead run on a bone-head play DQ’s you in my mind.

Downing Rules - June 23, 2008
Was at the game
L-O-T-S of panther action in the crowd, almost shocking. For instance, one young couple had their one-year-old dressed up in a rally monkey costume, and were shaking him around above their head during the 8th inning rally. I shite you not. Saw a lot of early ‘80s-era jerseys, and caps from the recent throwback night. Couple kids there had road-tripped from SoCal w/ a bunch of buddies in an RV, with matching hand-made T-shirts commemorating the trip, and all eating homemade sandwiches.
I took tons of pics, had pretty killer seats, and a great time was had by all. Particularly during the vicious Rodney King-style beatdown that T.R. & Thomas Jefferson laid down on Abraham Lincoln out on the warning track. Unbelievable.
Stadium’s pretty nice; kind of austere with the whole battleship gray/blue thing. Elijah Dukes is just huge, and Milledge was hitting the cover off the ball.
Oh, panther? I’d give it to Aybar. That DP he turned in the first - a real game-changing event, the way Lackey was struggling up top - was just incredibly quick. He’s something special on defense.
mattwelch - June 23, 2008
If GA wasn't so lazy
maybe he would have seen that DP Aybar turned in the first, it was so quick.
Oh wait, that was ME. My butt. Maybe I’ll change my panther pick to Aybar.
highlandhalo - June 23, 2008
I am still thunderstruck by the mental image
of a young couple dressing their child in a monkey suit and then taking him/her to a baseball game so that they can hold said child up in the air for all to watch as they shake and shake and shake.
What are the odds that one or both work in the Department of Health and Humna Services???
Stirrups - June 23, 2008
2's and 3's
scottnak - June 23, 2008
Lackey all the way...
bighead - June 23, 2008
lack
once again, our starting pitching won us the game, not the offense.
NoDakHalo - June 23, 2008
Panther=Lackey
Dimitri Young makes Mo Vaughn look like Karen Carpenter. Must be that Mississippi BBQ
PieceOfAase - June 23, 2008
It's hard to believe I saw that guy play in HS
at Rio Mesa HS in Oxnard. He was an awesome SS. Now he is one fat bastard.
highlandhalo - June 23, 2008
It's all about Ox-nads.
Downing Rules - June 24, 2008
john "thunfer mountain" lackey
my panther pick
Sorbo182 - June 23, 2008
Lackey
Then Frankie, Andy, Aybar
Frankie at 31 saves. Going for the record (57). Not even half way through the season yet.
vladtheimpaler - June 23, 2008
you know........now i go back and read the game thread...
POTG….....easily for me…..is
REV….....great timing on the new “rally” thread…...people are overlooking that contribution to the win today.
norcaliangelsfan - June 23, 2008
Yeah. I have to give him props for that one after calling him out on the Seal The Deal thread last week.
Stirrups - June 23, 2008
GA!!!
He had a big hit, and his ass is old.
Zookeeper - June 23, 2008
i missed the game, BUT
i agree with Zookeeper—how about some love for the clutch RBI from my man GA???
yeswecan - June 23, 2008
We're just too lazy.
44FAN - June 23, 2008
Like Ga
WillGoAngels27 - June 23, 2008
We're too lazy to give him all the respect he deserves.
Downing Rules - June 24, 2008
Lackey @ Yard Barker
I almost ruined it for us with the dumb throw I made to allow the go-ahead run to score in the 7th inning. But you know what, just like always, our guys got my back
Funke5ive - June 24, 2008
nats defense
oy.
Meathead singing take me out to the ballgame and his puny clap (huhu) for a nats rally during dadadadadada.
No kudos on beating this horrible team,
Kristy_Joe - June 24, 2008
Figgins' speed forced the defense to make plays...
that’s the beauty of Scioscia-ball. I wouldn’t be blaming the Nats D, but instead praising the Angels’ agressive baserunning philosophy.
Downing Rules - June 24, 2008
It was a Trap!
TheTypingFiend - June 24, 2008
Aybar for panther
He should have been credited for a third hit, if the 1st base ump hadn’t blown the call when he drag bunted and clearly beat the Felipe Lopez throw to first but was called out. He was stellar last night.
hk47 - June 24, 2008
i guess aybar did deserve a panther sooner or later
although my first choice was lackey. even if loduca sac flies, he goes 8 innings like 5 hits, and 2 earned
