Personally, I would like to give the BOTG to HGH for his boneheaded play in the outfield late in the game.
Whom do you think should get the scarlet letters "BOTG?":
And the Blame of the Game goes to...

Blame of the Game: Jose Arredondo
As poster jjackflash says in the comments section of this thread... if Arredondo simply does his job, the Angels win the game.

vlad
for killing our 7th inning rally by striking out on 3 straight pitches with one out and runners on the corners
UCIHalo - June 16, 2008
you are the only one here who watched this game
hittheg - June 17, 2008
Terrible decision
I thought common knowledge said not to throw behind a runner.
Or can HGH not stand people callin’ him chicken.
TheTypingFiend - June 16, 2008
yeah, gmj lost this game
wake up
hittheg - June 17, 2008
Didn't mean to say that he did.
He came through big during our 7th inning rally.
That was probably the best Angels AB that I’ve seen in a while.
I just can’t believe he was baited so easily.
TheTypingFiend - June 17, 2008
Bad Weaver, for being bad.
Kotchman for 0-4, stranding 3, HGH for his brainfart, Vlad for his crucial whiff.
PieceOfAase - June 16, 2008
its either HGH or Kotch
HGH because of the bonehead throwing mistake.
Kotch because he went 0-4 with 4 LOB. that hurts.
take your pick
howiestheman - June 16, 2008
Kotch also got thrown out being over-aggressive on the bases.
Ouch.
Zu Long - June 16, 2008
In which case
Bag on Izturis for his first-inning screwup, too.
scareduck - June 16, 2008
Yeah
but Izzy went 3-4 with a walk. My point was that Kotch’s baserunning error adds to his 0-4 night, as far as BOTG candidacy goes.
Zu Long - June 16, 2008
True that
We should be grateful that Figgy is picking up just where he left off. For some reason, Howie’s swing is still a bit off, though at least he went 2-for-4 in this game.
scareduck - June 16, 2008
Yeah. Howie is making fits and starts. Hopefully he's getting it together though.
Zu Long - June 17, 2008
izzy made the only running "mistake"
he could see the flight of the ball
our “super-star” had the worst at-bat
trade him
before anyone else knows he’s not a great hitter

6 ER including 2 HRs
Weaver has to eat this one.
yeswecan - June 16, 2008
blame would start with him
UCIHalo - June 16, 2008
Weaver eats this. emo award too

WEAVER
good god, look at the first 4 innings
ladybug - June 16, 2008
2 - 1 - 1 - 0
The Angels were still in the game, somewhat…
Downing Rules - June 17, 2008
yeah
somewhat
he set the tone. He had a first pitch strike and it was downhill from there
ladybug - June 17, 2008
Weave.
GMJ made TWO fundamental “lack-o-mental” mistakes on that one play (not running the player back to first, and not throwing in front of the runner to hold him at the prior base), but that was not the reason for NINE Met runs or a THREE run loss.

WTY
should get BOTG by quite a bit IMO
MH252525 - June 16, 2008
I like Simi
Really I do. But his good mechanics keep getting overridden by his bad psychology. One batter gets up against him and suddenly this pathos starts pouring out of him in body language that Stevie Wonder could read.
So I think he gets the blame. And if I could give a secondary blame I’d give it to Vlad for reaching a mile and a half for three low-outsiders in a row in a crucial.
Zoe Necrosis - June 16, 2008
Looking for validation
I wasn’t watching the early innings because I was at work, but Helen tells me that after Mathis made his error, Weaver started getting cranky and bit his lip and stuff, losing his focus for the big at-bat of the inning, Beltran’s homer. Anybody wanna confirm?
scareduck - June 16, 2008
I don't remember that specifically
but I confirm the horrible body language, I remember commenting one inning he walked off the mound like his mom had run over his dog
MH252525 - June 16, 2008
Now that brother Jeff is without a job
look for WTY to put extra pressure on himself to get it done.
I’m thinking WTE’s career is over if he can’t even get out AAA batters.
scareduck - June 16, 2008
He also angrily caught the ball back from one of the infielders after that SB/error play
Body language was definitely not good. Then he gave up the HR.
Downing Rules - June 17, 2008

Downing Rules - June 17, 2008
Too many things
In order:
1) Weaver for his crappy performance.
2) Scioscia for failing to pull him when it was clear he was riding on the razor’s edge the whole night (i.e. after he gave up a single in the seventh)
3) As others have said, Vlad for his swing-at-everything, hit-nothing performance with men on the corners in the seventh
4) GMJ for defensive brain farts and yet another “one good offensive event per game” performance. This is also partly on Scioscia, who should know better by now and should be sitting him down to find out how good Willits
can beis if he gets regular playing time (oh, who am I kidding, GMJ sucks).I don’t normally get annoyed with Scioscia, but this game is a big exception.
scareduck - June 16, 2008
Casey Kotchman?
So sayeth Fangraphs! He ended the sixth and squelched a one-out rally in the fourth.
scareduck - June 16, 2008
Gonna stick with Weaver here.
Zu Long - June 16, 2008
Arredondo
Fact is, if he does his job, Halos win this one.
jjackflash - June 16, 2008
Like I said
Even if I don’t agree with it, I appreciate the consistency.
Zu Long - June 16, 2008
Totally DISAGREE!!!!!
How the hell do you know the Angels were going to score another run. You are looking at this through your Rear View Mirror. If Arredondo holds them I bet we would have still lost this game 4-3. Arredondo not holding them CAUSED the Angels to score more runs. We will never know what would have happened if Arre got the “hold” (We were loosing so its not a hold) because there are NO “What If’s” In baseball.
Now if we were tied, And Arredondo came in with runners on then I would MOST Likely blame him, but that was not the case so I blame VLAD or HGH.
F it i’ll give it to Anderson for not hitting a game tieing HR and lineing into a DP.

he has not called for a GA injury in quite some time.
Downing Rules - June 17, 2008
Thanks........I learned my lesson on wishing people to get injured.
I pulled my Hamstring last week and realized I do not want anyone to go through that pain, not even my worst enemies, cuz it sucks.
acuda27 - June 17, 2008
Shouldn't that mean you need another 5 weeks to recuperate before you can post?
Stirrups - June 17, 2008
Nope......I went to the University Health Center in Whittier, on Amber Valley Dr.
and got some GOOD treatment. I played on again this past sunday but did not run at full speed.
I would like to race Figgins, Aybar, and Izzy to see how fast I am and how fast they really are. I too rely on speed in baseball.
acuda27 - June 18, 2008
Pull or strain?
I strained mine last night, felt it pop whilst running from 1st to 3rd on a single.
What do you do to get it to stop hurting so dang much? I just keep icing it.
Downing Rules - June 18, 2008
I was just kidding about blaming GA........I would give it to the fag that wrote the OBP article
because we all knew Scioscia would NEVER bench GA or HGH to let Rivers and Reggie play.
But my point was that ARRE should not be blamed.
acuda27 - June 17, 2008
Weaver all the way
Though I came here expecting to see the possible reasons where he might have escaped a BOTG nod.
BBFan1 - June 17, 2008
its all my fault
the angels dont win when i go to games. it’s that simple.
I blame Scioscia for leaving Weaver in too long, then leaving Arredondo in too long. It’d be awesome if we could combine our 6 run performance with some better pitching someday.
Carl Johnson - June 17, 2008
Same here dude......I was there when Santana pitched saturday and I was sure they were going to win
But me being there caused them to loose.

Further proof, I wore it during the home opener. I took it off after the 8th, and they scored 6 runs in the 9th.

It feels like I’m about 2-5 wearing it to the park, but I’m not keeping track.

i hate this thread
but vlad was the reason we lost
weaver did not pitch well
but he’s an average pitcher
no suprise
we could have won this game
our offense is built around a player
who is selfish and stupid
i knew the pitcher would throw balls off the plate
in the seventh inning
why didn’t he?
because (and this will be sacrealious(sp?))
he is stupid
vlad can hit
but he is an idiot
maybe he’s only a stupid racist
“the big cat” influenced him to wait for strikes a few years ago
we all knew it
he didn’t
did he forget?
if he did he’s a fool
why were senor gallaraga’s words more important?
because they were in spanish?
if so, he’s a racist
if not, he’s a fool
if this moran(or racist) can be pitched around
what good is he to us?
vlad was a great player on a losing team
he’s beeen good on our team
how many world series have we won with this “super star?”
zero
the same amount he won with the expos
we either need to start treating vlad like a human
or get what we can for him
the rays have been offered the talents of
ken griffey jr. by himself
what unselfish, young players could we get for vlad?
weaver was terrible, if you exspected more
against this line-up
you are the dream weaver
our batters gave us a chance to win
vlad took that away
vlad and his selfish/stupid ways took that from us
i thihk vlad could help us more as trade-bait than his
idiotic/foolish batting approaches
let’s unload him now
give up our best player?
fregosi for ryan reduex
by the way i vote for vlad as BOTG (loser)
is vlad lovable, of course
so’s my puppy
it’s time to take the gloves off
vlad is an anchor pulling us down
too easy to pitch around him
now pile on

YEA!
Let’s trade Vlad for that terrible at bat.
I hadn’t realized that it was him jinxing us in the postseason.
Let’s get there this season without him.
TheTypingFiend - June 17, 2008
the guy is in by far the worst
slump of his career, and yet is still batting better than most. Where will your un-inspired posts be when Vlad winds up batting .315, with 28 Hr, 110 RBI, still an off year but the best numbers on the team. Real smart move, “hey lets trade Vlad” yeah I won’t even go into how stupid of a decision this would be, but how about trading a “superstar” when he’s slumping at his worst. Your argument would have at least sounded semi-intelligent if you had said, “When Vladdy gets out of this slump, and ends the season hot, we should trade him in the offseason to at least get something for him before he really starts to decline.”
It is still a stupid argument but at least it’s a better thought out one.
Sinatrasratpack - June 17, 2008
Oh...
And I forgot to call you a mental midget…
But I added it here so now I feel better
Sinatrasratpack - June 17, 2008
Heh. Your post is... let's call it "different".
But I agree the Vlad at-bat was terrible.
Try to use less words if you have such a hard time saying something that makes sense though.
infant - June 17, 2008
Oh and...
no way we should trade Vlad.
I’m still confident he can turn it around – question is, when ?

Hmmm. Baseball history would seem to suggest that you have your head in your ass. You would have discounted and traded Willie Mays too?
While you’re calling out others as “fools,” please stop to take a look at how foolish you look. You’re insisting, in fractured and terriblly disguised prose, that the Angels trade one of the games’ historical power hitters because you don’t like his start this season (still managing an OPS of 115, BTW, even at the lowest point of his career) or a lone at-bat from last night’s game.
You obviously never played the game and you do not know the first thing about it. That much is obvious. Spend some time learning the game and its history, put together an idea that makes some degree of sense, and then start pecking away at your keyboard. The only “fool” I see here right now is you.

Advice Of The Day
Stirrups - June 17, 2008
No way the blame should go to Arredondo
Weaver was bad. Arredondo wasn’t good either. But Vladdy really stunk it up.
Up until this year, if we had runners on 1st and 3rd, only one out, and Vlad would be at the plate, we’d all KNOW we’d get at least another run, possibly two or even three. These days, we KNOW he’s going to either ground into a double play or strike out.
Terrible, terrible at bat by Vlad in the 7th. Vlad has not been good three games in a row the entire season. I’m starting to think his GOOD games this year are more of a fluke than his BAD games… Which is really sad as I think Vlad is absolutely awesome – just not this year, or at least not so far.
infant - June 17, 2008
Theory
is it reasonable to expect the offense to score more than 6 runs? No.
Is it reasonable to expect the pitching to give up fewer than six runs? Yes.
Arredondo let the game get out of hand. Even assuming he allows the runner to score from 3B (with only one out, a reasonable possibility), had he simply done his job correctly (get two measly outs…say, a flyout and a groundout) the game stays within reach. A two or three-run lead is a lot easier to overcome. His job was to limit the damage; instead, he threw gas on the fire.
Yeah, it would have been nice if Vlad had gotten a hit, but the team still scored 6 runs, which should be enough to win the game.
jjackflash - June 17, 2008
good point
I agree totally.
You can say that it wasn’t a good at bat from Vladdy in the 7th. But that is a lot of harsh blame for one at bat. We had Vladdy picked off at third (not his fault, it was a contact play and replays showed he was safe), Izzy thrown out at Second and Kotch forgetting he is Kotch and getting thrown out. there’s our three runs right there…. If you said that we would score six (and really 9, without boneheaded running plays) I would have told you that we would have won going away. the fact is the pitching didn’t hold up… Weaver was off but did okay enough, the blame goes to Arrendondo. as JJackflash said if he had done his job we would have won.
Sinatrasratpack - June 17, 2008
Totally agree
The fact is, the pitching has been carrying the lack-of-offense for quite some time now. Vlad is our most talented hitter, or at least he was, and he was as un-clutch as could be. That did it in my book.
infant - June 17, 2008
So while I agree with the theory...
It felt like Vlad could have made a bigger difference than Dondo.
infant - June 17, 2008
Vlad and Torii
But, it was a hell of a pitching performance by the Mets’ reliever who came in and K’d those two.
Downing Rules - June 17, 2008
i'm going with dondo...the are some good arguments.
but i was leaning vlad. i wouldn’t have thought of vlad had he even hit a nubber back to the pitcher, or at least looked at one pitch. but swinging at three pitches way off the plate, especially when he should know they’re coming, is frustrating to watch. i mean, if i know that they’re coming, and i’ve never played a game of organized baseball in my life, shouldn’t he?
NoDakHalo - June 17, 2008

Downing Rules - June 17, 2008
That's his job
to fix it – i.e., get two outs and limit the damage. He didn’t. It could have been a 2 or 3-run game; he made it a 5-run affair.
jjackflash - June 17, 2008
True, he was put in there to limit the damage BUT
some people make it seem like if the KNEW the angels were going to score 6 runs.
acuda27 - June 18, 2008
Inherited Runners
Only 4 runs had scored when WTY left the game; Arredondo let in the other two, plus two more besides. Again, even granting an additional run for an out, there’s no way that sixth run should have scored. And that’s on Jose this time.
jjackflash - June 17, 2008
INHERITED RUNNERS
Where can you find this stat? I think it should be one of the first stats you see when talking about relievers, but one never can see it on their stat pages.
Downing Rules - June 17, 2008
Evil Empire
has it on each player’s page. E.g., here’s Scot Shields’ page. The abbreviation “IR” is inherited runners, and IS is inherited runners who scored. Thus, in 2007, Shields stranded 20 of 32 inherited runners.

Arredondo has stranded 6 of 9.
