He’s been rather pedestrian all season. He leaks a lot of baserunners, and has proven susceptible to the long ball. By failing to score in the 1st nine innings, the Halos were pretty much guaranteed to lose; but once you reach the bottom of the 9th in a tie game, you simply cannot give up any runs until your team has scored something. He failed at his job.
Tip of the Hat to Garland: 8 shutout innings, good zip on the fastball (92, 93)
James Shields; top notch starter who was really on his game. No wag of the finger to the hitters. Speier sucked, but at least it was quick. Angels might be lucky if Aybar is only out a few games. The hit on the hand looked very bad.
Gear up for tomorrow: ace-lefty Kazmir goes for the Rays.
‘Meanwhile, preliminary X-rays showed no fracture after Erick Aybar was hit by a pitch in the fourth inning. Aybar was examined by Rays team doctor Koco Eaton and diagnosed with a bone contusion of the pinky finger on his left hand . . . .’
but seriously, you cant blame relievers. You have to blame the offense for doing nothing the entire game, and swinging at first pitches. You have to be patient against pitches you are dealing and work the counts. They seemed like they decided that the best course of action was to swing at every first pitch. Bad game plan, bad offense.
i don't see why everyone whats to give it to speier.
yea he gave up the winning runs meaning he did not do his job, but neither did anyone on this team, save garland. i think that the blame falls on the sholders of the team leaders who for some crazy reason have been mired in a season long slump. so give it to vlad and or GA or even scioscia or putting up that weak lineup
Everyone but Garland

If we had seen bad-Garland on the mound tonight, I might’ve stopped watching the Angels altogether.

Isn’t his main job to HOLD the game?
lightupthehalo - May 9, 2008
No ONE Angel on offense can be blamed much more than the others
whereas Speier did that exact opposite of his damn job.
Caseys Kiss of Death - May 9, 2008
I blame GA.
If he had not been so lazy, and gotten 3 RBI’s today, Speier would have collected a save.

Update on Aybar's Condition
