Panther of the Game: Robb Quinlan
Robb had a 2-Run HR that was the difference in this game, but on a day when our bats were in love with the longball, our pitching staff needed the leather and Robb delivered a critical defensive gem in the 1st inning to get Brian Roberts stealing 3B.
For all the shade Robb gets on the posts here, nobody can deny that he was a major leaguer today, a testament to our organization's depth.

Frankie will never get a panther.
Ever.

Shows how badly he's getting ignored, doesn't it?

LOGIC TO A FRANKIE PANTHER
Panther is above and beyond the call of duty. Frankie’s duty is to get a save. HE did that. Just because he did not raise our collective blood pressure to 210/190 does not mean he was the Panther in light of the other accomplishments of this game.
A Frankie Panther would have to be something involving men on base that he himself did not create, y virtue of his assigned role. Frankly, he only got TWO outs in the game today, not to dimiish his contribution, but again, Panther is beyond expectations.
Rev Halofan - May 4, 2008
I agree. He'd probably have to get at least 4 outs to get panther
i.e. he’d have to be brought in the 8th to clean up a mess.
melvintoast - May 4, 2008
Concur.
“Panther is beyond expectations.” Then it’s Quinlan, no question.
Fan Since 1981 - May 4, 2008
That seems kind of lame though.
Don’t we expect our pitchers to put up good starts? Yet when they do, they invariably get Panthers. We expect the middle of the order guys to put up runs. When they do, they get Panthers. We may expect K-Rod to get Saves, but at what point does he get credit for doing that as consistently as he has? It kinda feels like we don’t appreciate him enough.
K-Rod seems to easily have the highest standard of anyone, since a successful outing is apparently expected every time. I mean really- when you can have a pretty good year, and yet still not get a panther the whole season, what does that say about our expectations? The way it’s set up, if Frankie fails, he gets auto-blame’d if we lose, and yet if he succeeds, no matter how often or consistent it is, he never really gets his props.
I don’t necessarily think that this game in merits him getting a panther, since Mathis did provide some support in the 9th. But there have been some games where he’s been pretty damn good, and almost half (6 of 13) of his saves have been 1-run instant death affairs. It’s not as if he’s been racking up 3 runs saves the whole time.
Zu Long - May 4, 2008
The problem is not with KRod.
The problem is that everybody has already decided on who is Panther by the time Frankie comes in, and they simply need Frankie to close the voting booths.
Stirrups - May 4, 2008
Starters
They are expected to put up a Quality Start and Inevitably go beyond a Quality Start when they get a panther. Again, it is about surpassing expectations.
Rev Halofan - May 4, 2008
Considering the god-like expectations we hold for Vlad...
How would he ever exceed them and qualify for Panther?
Stirrups - May 4, 2008
lots of ways
get a walkoff hit
get an outfield assist to end the game
make any sort of diving play in the outfield
have a perfect day at the plate
get over 3 RBI’s
at this point, he gets one when he hits a double
Carl Johnson - May 5, 2008
I think it is highly subjective
You are only doing the fans bidding and they nominate the Panther and its been already said that K-Rod will not get one this season. We’ll ride him out, ridicule him as he’ll get his 45-50 saves and praise every other player on the team with the exception of him, HGH or GA.
I’m sure there his teammates still have faith in him, I’m sure some fans in the stadium still do, but he’s not yet closing games for New York or wherever team he is going to sign with in the off-season.
He’s going to blow another save. He’s not perfect. Still, enjoy the drama while it lasts, because watching Justin or Scot implode as the closer will be hell, if and when it comes to that time.
BBFan1 - May 4, 2008
...we are in agreement…
Rev Halofan - May 4, 2008
arredondo
that’s my humble opinion.
Carl Johnson - May 5, 2008
Remember when Dusty Baker brought Rob Nen in the 8th to preserve
a 1 run lead? That’s the opposite of a panther. Remember when Orel was brought in by Lasorda in the 27th inning after Orasco couldn’t find the plate? That was panther.
Since a closer’s use is limited, shields speier and oliver definitely get more opportunities because they’re the guys you call when men are on base and you’re struggling to preserve a lead, K-Rod doesn’t get as much love.
On the other hand, as I’ve written elsewhere on this site, he get’s major respect from me for his performance in 2002, especially game 2 of the WS. So if you came up with a Panther Quality Metric, or ranked all time greatest Panther performances, he’d be in the top 5 IMHO.
Sometimes it’s quality over quantity, thickness instead of length.
melvintoast - May 5, 2008
how many double plays
did the angels come up with?
missed 99.9% of the game
PhiSlamma - May 4, 2008
just 1
b0rd3rline - May 4, 2008
Vlad hit into 1.
We also turned 1.
Zu Long - May 4, 2008
Angels turned 1, but it was huge. It ended the 5th inning for Joe.
Fan Since 1981 - May 4, 2008
Frankie came up big today. Pantheresque performance.
That would have been an awful game to blow. Frankie came and faced the 3 best O’s hitters (with an assist from Math Man). Good thing it was little league day at the ballpark, because Trac was throwing little league fastballs in the 1st inning. Angels hitters left for Hooters after the 3rd inning.
Fan Since 1981 - May 4, 2008
honorable mention to torii
for hitting the biggest homer at our park this year (i think)

ihearhowie2.0 - May 4, 2008
It will be interesting to check hittrackeronline.com tomorrow to find out the distance.

"torii didn't need a day game for that one,
it would’ve be gone in yellowstone national park” – Rex Hudler, pulling out the most cliche line in the business. lol.

Definitely crushed
Hit the top of the protective fence in the visitors bullpen.

How long has it been since Frankie got a Panther?
Well over a season. Seems wrong for a guy who has been as good as he is.
Zu Long - May 4, 2008

UCIHalo - May 4, 2008

anaheim angels - May 4, 2008
I feel sorry for Mrs. Quinlan.
Tonight Robb is going to make her sit and watch replays of his homerun over and over and over.
44FAN - May 4, 2008
ha ha!
I can so see Robb doing that!
lightupthehalo - May 4, 2008

UCIHalo - May 4, 2008
HK-47

Lackey went 4 IP, 2 ER, 4 hits. Also had 4 SO to 1 BB in the game today.

Sweet.
Good update. Was wondering about Kendricks road to recovery.

lets hope this means nothing.
Howie Kendrick singles on a ground ball to left fielder Reid Engel.
Offensive Substitution: Pinch runner Tadd Brewer replaces Howie Kendrick.

It probably means nothing, right? Right?
I don’t even wanna think about it….

The Black Panthers with red heads makes me LOL
Dont know why, but that is just too funny.
Mayheminthehood - May 4, 2008
The guy on the right looks like
Jordan Peele from Madtv.
(I move along from the occasional Black Panther invocations, however. I am old enough, and grew up here in California, to know that those days were not so much fun.)
Stirrups - May 4, 2008
If I were as old as you, it'd only make it that much funnier.
I have a very weird sense of humor.
off topic: THE NEW DARK KNIGHT TRAILER IS OUT AND I’VE WATCHED IT 20 TIMES ALREADY TODAY. HEATH LEDGER’S JOKER IS A REVELATION.
had to get that off my chest.
Mayheminthehood - May 4, 2008
Saw the trailer b4 Iron Man last night.
Makes me proud that I raised my (now college-aged) sons to understand the Batman as THE badass hero. Not Superman. Not TMNT’s. Not…well, Ok…I couldn’t fend off Mario…

Qin = Qout
sum(Q) + sum(W) = 0
Simple thermodynamics.
I’m gonna wander back into the classroom now.
Carl Johnson - May 5, 2008
So are you saying the limit of W as Q -> infinity
is negative inifinity?
