Panther of the Game: Scot Shields
Shields came into the game with men on base, pitched 1.2 scoreless, struck out 3 and was squeezed at the plate and did not break. Toughest award of the year on a win as Jon Garland kicked serious ass.

shields
giving the panther to the starting pitcher every game gets boring…
Carl Johnson - May 26, 2008
Fangraphs
agrees. Vlad gets vice-Panther for a 3-for-6 day at the plate.
scareduck - May 26, 2008
that hit in the 12th was clutch
for all the crap i have been giving him that was huge.
UCIHalo - May 26, 2008
sorry but on that type of game/ending
NOBODY on offense gets panther… besides, Garland was a close second on Fangraphs
Los Angeles de Anaheim - May 26, 2008
agreed
panther had to go to the pitching staff
UCIHalo - May 26, 2008
I'm with you.
Shields brought the hammer down with the ump working against him and a man on third. Panther to the max.
Zu Long - May 26, 2008
shields...panther
adirondackangelfan - May 26, 2008
garland
for the most shutout innings.
especially since no one even hit a walk-off.
NoDakHalo - May 26, 2008
Shields was clutch
Even when the umpire tried many times to make him fail
edhoo - May 26, 2008
Ump was an amateur.
Someone needs to explain to him the late action on a 2 seam fastball thrown by a right-hander.
Fan Since 1981 - May 26, 2008
My vote
Kinda split 3 ways between Garland, Scot, and Jose. I’ll go with Shields getting out of the 8th jam and middle of Tigers lineup in the 9th
gorams77 - May 26, 2008
Garland
Fangraphs gives a slight edge to Shields over Garland, but Garland pitched so well tonight
Los Angeles de Anaheim - May 26, 2008
Garland
yeswecan - May 26, 2008
garland or arrendondo
UCIHalo - May 26, 2008
wat about a three panther system like they have in hockey.
with 3 points for 1st panther, 2 for 2nd, and 1 for 3rd. just cuz sometimes its hard to choose the panther, as a win isnt just because of 1 player.
anaheim angels - May 26, 2008
my vote goes to Shields
man on 3rd, one out in the 8th and he was lights out despite the ump forcing him to get like 4 outs.
MH252525 - May 26, 2008
I'm with the Shields people, he was denied the called 3rd strike atleast 3 times
and didn’t let it shake him.
TheOptimist - May 26, 2008
ESPN just showed a 6 second highlight
and thats all we’re gonna get
Carl Johnson - May 26, 2008
What did you say? Big Papi homered again?
Los Angeles de Anaheim - May 26, 2008
UP NEXT: INTERVIEW WITH THE BEARD OF KEVIN YOUKILIS

Carl Johnson - May 26, 2008
ALSO: THE YANKEES LOST!
WHAT HAPPENED TO THE HOT STREAK THAT STARTED IN SEATTLE?
Zu Long - May 26, 2008
lol i love how every team starts a hot streak in seattle
Carl Johnson - May 26, 2008
Sure seems that way doesn't it?
Zu Long - May 26, 2008
baseball tonight showed highlights from about 6 innings
so just check the right program
ihearhowie2.0 - May 26, 2008
To be fair
There wasnt much to show
edhoo - May 26, 2008
Now I know this would have been a huge loss for the Angels
but did anyone think about how devastating this loss is for the Tigers? 11 shutout innings wasted on the Road against a first place team and Sheff left with an injury.
MH252525 - May 26, 2008
yeah, glad we're not them
Los Angeles de Anaheim - May 26, 2008
yeah its way worse for them
and thats a really humiliating way to lose. i would feel bad, but i…dont.
Carl Johnson - May 26, 2008
neither do I
just saying… hehe
MH252525 - May 26, 2008
going off their stats when they dont score more than 4 runs
i never doubted IF we would win, but just when
ihearhowie2.0 - May 26, 2008
And M-Cab's knee
Is gonna swell and stiffen up like a rookie P.A. on his first porn shoot.
ReggieBullits - May 26, 2008
TMI man, TMI...
Zu Long - May 26, 2008
That was the most boring 4 hour game ever.
If it was a pitching duel that would be one thing, but it wasn’t even that. It was just a bunch of anti-clutch hitters on both sides. Though Shields, Garland and Arredondo were pretty amazing.
101halo - May 26, 2008
Agreements on Shields and Arredondo
they were great
highlandhalo - May 26, 2008
the only thing that was worth watching that game was that freak inning
and any time we were pitching. the bottom halves of every inning were horrendous
Carl Johnson - May 26, 2008
Hunter?
He reached base 5 of 6 times, did his job.
elricsi - May 26, 2008
he reached base 5 times
the tigers got 5 hits. 15 mil a year doesnt looks so bad now does it? hah
anaheim angels - May 26, 2008
Panthers don't get awarded for doing their job -- they get them for exceeding expecations and doing some "clutch"
Los Angeles de Anaheim - May 26, 2008
your right, a .833333 OBP and a .66666666 SLG is way below his averages. thats waht we expect from him every night
anaheim angels - May 26, 2008
Don't forget that massively awesome SB.
Torii did everything you could possibly ask of him.
TheOptimist - May 26, 2008
That's true. The SB was hilarious and clutch.
Zu Long - May 26, 2008
except for that 1 time in 6 pas he got out
anaheim angels - May 26, 2008
2 times on base out of 5 is all you can ask of a guy.
5 out of 6 is just a bad ass job.
TheOptimist - May 26, 2008
Dorothy
We should have won that game 7 times over for the effort that he put in. He was awesome.
highlandhalo - May 26, 2008
panther pitching all around
garland got out of nasty jams, shields, frankie and arredondo all kept us afloat.
pitching!
(ps our hitting is frightening right now)
ihearhowie2.0 - May 26, 2008
Our hitting would worry we more if our pitching weren't destroying people.
TheOptimist - May 26, 2008
If GA weren't so lazy...
We wouldn’t have won this game. He was too lazy to swing the bat.
101halo - May 26, 2008
true, but if he wernt so lazy torii would have stolen home
anaheim angels - May 26, 2008
If he weren't so lazy he would have gotten 10 RBI again, and made the pitching moot.
Zu Long - May 26, 2008
Actually....
I was thinking of GA for panther, just for knowing when NOT to swing.
red floyd - May 26, 2008
Lost in the shuffle...
GA DID get the game-winning RBI …
Although, I thought Vlad’s single and Mice going from 1st-to-3rd was a key play in the game.
My panther vote goes to Vlad Guerrero.
Downing Rules - May 27, 2008
Good thing...
my cuz came to the Indy Rescue!
scottnak - May 26, 2008
Garland for shizz
he should have 7 wins right now, but our inept offense keeps snatching defeat from the jaws of victory when he pitches
howiestheman - May 26, 2008
any starting pitcher who throws a shutout
deserves a PANTHER.
i don’t care how boring it is, i would love to keep giving our starters panthers for 1 run or less outings.
NoDakHalo - May 26, 2008
how annoying is miguel cabrera?
i was ALL for getting this guy in the offseason and i think i just realized i hate him. he goes nuts when he catches routine pop outs and catches the balls thrown to him at first.
ya, youre playing a new position but its because youre a fatass. stop celebrating doing your job. you dont see landscapers high fiving after pruning bushes or mechanics running a victory lap after a quick tune up
ihearhowie2.0 - May 26, 2008
Uh, I actually saw landscapers high-fiving it in Coto de Caza
PieceOfAase - May 26, 2008
LOL
Zu Long - May 26, 2008
thats because they probably watch too much desperate housewives
and think all OC coto mommys wanna get nasty with their gardeners
ihearhowie2.0 - May 26, 2008
When you're as bad at catching the ball as he seems to be
Celebrating like that makes sense. But yeah, he already had a rep as a jackass, and that’s another reason why I didn’t want him.
Zu Long - May 26, 2008
Shields stuff was ELECTRIC tonight. But Garland carried a shutout into the 8th.
Arredondo with two shutout innings, Frankie with a clutch K. And they did all this with ZERO MARGIN for error. 12 shutout innings against a Tigers team that put up 19 runs just two nights ago.
PANTHER PITCHING
Fan Since 1981 - May 26, 2008
word
NoDakHalo - May 26, 2008
Vlad
Without moving Maicer to third with 1 out, they don’t walk T-Double-i to load the bases, and the BB doesn’t force home the winning run and we’re probably in the bottom of the 14th. Fitting way for this team to win right now.
But yeah, I guess Johnny G-Land is the safe pick.
ReggieBullits - May 26, 2008
how much longer does s-rod stay up?
UCIHalo - May 26, 2008
= days until figgins is back in the lineup
unfortunately wood would then play until howie is back (fingers crossed for next weekend).
the days of the black hole 8-9 are coming to an end!
ihearhowie2.0 - May 26, 2008
actually
i think you have that wrong.
SRod will leave when Howie comes back, and Wood will go when Aybar comes back.
thats my guess anyway
howiestheman - May 26, 2008
I think you're right
S-Rod may have no bat, but he has an incredibly sick glove.
red floyd - May 26, 2008
S-rod might not leave, but he wont be playing.
Figgins or Izturis can each play 2nd base.
Im pretty sure scoscia is aware of rodriguez’s .120 avg or whatever it is.
figgins = 3rd
wood = Short
izturis = 2nd
or quinlan, izturis, figgins
either way, i dont see rodriguez getting any playing time once figgins is back.
ihearhowie2.0 - May 27, 2008
The batting version of K-Rod
Downing Rules - May 27, 2008
I'll say Judy...
pitching out of 1st and 3rd no outs was awesome!
JUDY, JUDY, JUDY…..
K3YEROUT - May 26, 2008
...and that's only if you don't count highlandhalo for staying up til 6 am local time to watch the ending...
K3YEROUT - May 26, 2008
Garland!!!!!
this team was smoking hot 30+ runs the last few games and Garland shut them down to zero. He is the only reason we had a chanse.
SFV88 - May 26, 2008
i agree. both he and shields got out of wicked jams with tigers on third
ihearhowie2.0 - May 26, 2008
with most pitching staffs that game would have been a 4 or 6 to 0 loss
perfect example of how a pitching staff gives and gives the team an opportunity to win
UCIHalo - May 26, 2008
Arredondo!
LittleCupcakes - May 26, 2008
hes pretty sweet
im somewhat worried about trusting him in such big situations once theres a scouting report out on him.
but for now, hes a pleasant little addition to a bullpen that has been kinda scary this year
ihearhowie2.0 - May 26, 2008
Panther is
Garland, no doubt
i do like Arredondo, he’s a lil G
Funke5ive - May 26, 2008
Maicer not getting any love for the awesome 1st to 3rd
hauldog - May 26, 2008
hes not getting any love
bcause it took him 6 tries to get on base
anaheim angels - May 26, 2008
It only takes one play
and that was a good one.
hauldog - May 26, 2008
truth spoken.
Downing Rules - May 27, 2008
Thank you
That was a shallow hit to center and he made a great heads up play. Angels Baseball TM
hauldog - May 27, 2008
he got on twice
reached by error in the first
halofan4life - May 26, 2008
Napster. No doubt.
179 friggin’ squats. My legs hurt just thinking about it.
Stirrups - May 26, 2008
thats not counting warmups before teh game and in between innings
ooooh thats gotta hurt. hello mathis tomorrow
anaheim angels - May 26, 2008
if you watch the replay you will notice that naps was the first one out to home plate to high five izzy
may have been happy to not have to go back out there. seriously though he always seems really amped to be part of the team.
UCIHalo - May 26, 2008
naps was the on deck batter
hittheg - May 26, 2008
Anderson
He should be the panther because he didn’t ground a 3-0 pitch to the 2nd baseman for a double play—which is what everyone on this forum was expecting him to do (admit it).
Riverrun - May 26, 2008
i was expecting a K from him
but a GIDP was my second guess :)
howiestheman - May 26, 2008
Garland
Garland did great today!
gohalos912 - May 26, 2008
Co panthers: Relief corps
Shields, K-Rod, Arredondo
BBFan1 - May 26, 2008
honorable mention
Hunter reached base 5 times in the game
Funke5ive - May 26, 2008
Garland
Holding that horrifying offense to 4 hits through 7.1 IP with 5SO?
That’s enough to win on almost any other day.
shiftyeyedgoat - May 26, 2008
Shields or Arredondo
Clutch pitching from both – Shieldsy in a more highly leveraged situation. That seems to be the consensus criteria for a Shields or Frankie Panther – escaping a highly leveraged situation without damage (and without really creating the crisis to begin with). An extremely solid outing from the rookie Arredondo does not go unnoticed. The guy has some nasty stuff.
jjackflash - May 26, 2008
Panther: Pitching staff
Pts 7.33 garland
4.67 relief
vladtheimpaler - May 26, 2008
gotta go with Judith
without him…...no other heriocs by anyone else would have been possible.
norcaliangelsfan - May 27, 2008
Garland
Grizzled Panther!
cupie - May 27, 2008
Some of ya seem to have forgotten that there are other ways you can reach base safely other than BBs and Hs
scottnak - May 27, 2008
FC's!
At least the “nothings X3 struck out”
vladtheimpaler - May 27, 2008
Scot Shields as Panther...
LAME…
Rev, apparently, you were not at the game. You pitch 7 innings of shutout ball with four hits and you are thrown to the curb.
Garland POTG.
cupie - May 27, 2008
Gotta cry about SOMETHING dontcha?
Downing Rules - May 27, 2008
Have the Angels ever had a walk off walk before last night?
I certainly have never seen one, that was quite an experience to witness in person last night. Awesome!
Downing Rules - May 27, 2008
yep
Although I can’t give you specific dates I know it has happened at least a couple times.
MH252525 - May 27, 2008
one of my best Angels memories was a beach towel day game
where fans started waving beach towels and as soon as they did the the opposing pitcher could hardly throw a strike. I think they won on a walkoff walk that day.
MH252525 - May 27, 2008
have you already forgotten about
torii’s walk-off grand slam
they’re giving away a tee shirt honoring it
hittheg - May 27, 2008
Uh, g spot...
I said walk off WALK.
Walk = bases on balls, (bka BB), four pitches out of the strike zone.
How can I forget that walk off Grand Slam? I was THERE MAN!
Downing Rules - May 27, 2008
oh, didn't read carefully
hittheg - May 27, 2008
Can you believe ANOTHER walk off (sans walk this time) ...
LAST NIGHT, too? Awesome!
Downing Rules - May 28, 2008
congrats shieldsy...
lord knows i’ve thrown a few F-bombs at you in other games before…...so this is well earned!
