Panther of the Game: Joe Saunders
Before you bitch about Vlad swinging at the First Pitch, understand that in the inning we scored all those runs Torii and Quinlan both swung at the first pitch. Quinlan struck the same meatball in the middle of the plate that Torii hit into the stands. For Robb, it was a well-placed single into Left.
Maicer Izturis took one for the team and the ball ricocheted off of his shoulder to the ground sharply and straight up into AJ Pierzynski's ballsack. The Worm of Worms got a sympathy visit behind the plate from Venezuelan Alcoholic Ozzie Guillen, whose dictator kicks his people in the balls once a week whether they need Citgo or not. So thanks Maicer who hopefully has a green card to stay in Anaheim with his brother Mickey instead of going back to the Ozzfest in his native Mycountry...
Rounding out the festivities was the hundred-degree-fever-and-pitch-limit Joe Saunders getting a gurney call from Doctor Soth, who installed the Frankie heart attack plan, designed to raise your blood pressure and remind Angel fans fans that we are alive by almost killing us!

Damn right
And 8-0. Eat that, Cleveland!
scareduck - May 23, 2008
8-1 -nt
100wins - May 23, 2008
Yeah, but in fairness to Rob he shouldn't have lost that game
TheOptimist - May 23, 2008
I blocked out his win mentally
scareduck - May 23, 2008
and Joe, too. -nt
100wins - May 23, 2008
Saunders
is the team MVP for the first two months.
tanana40 - May 23, 2008
No doubt.
Assist to K-Rod here for coming in fairly cold to a tough situation, It sucks when you have to nail down a team that’s feeling the momentum after knocking out your starter.
Zu Long - May 23, 2008
tough situation?
1 on, 1 out and a 3 run lead….???????
K3YEROUT - May 23, 2008
Read below.
Zu Long - May 23, 2008
Zu ???
I want some of what you are smoking. Saunders was on cruise control.
highlandhalo - May 23, 2008
The situation became tough BECAUSE Mike took Saunders out.
That pumps the other team up. Makes them feel like they’ve got a shot. Did you miss that part of my post?
Zu Long - May 23, 2008
back off of scoscia everyone
seriously, its not a bad decision. i mean the white socks are hitting everything lately. 8.1 shutout innings (almost) is more then commendable. i am perfctly fine with soth bringin in a new pitcher so the socks can no longer lock into colonel joe. and he DID get teh save to just remind everyone. he has blown 1 save this year!, thats like 39 less than speier, so back off a bit. although on a more pessimistic note, i am a little nervous about K-rod, but i would be me alot more nervous if we didnt have K-rod as not only would shieldsy be our closer, but spier would be the set up man, and moseley would have an increased role
anaheim angels - May 23, 2008
HIndsight 20/20
The Soth Call might look good now but it looked bad then.
Rev Halofan - May 23, 2008
If we would have lost
I’d be blaming Scioscia, not KRod.
100wins - May 23, 2008
Totally agreed
We’d be hollering if the Saunders came off the rails.
scareduck - May 23, 2008
I thought it was a good move at the time
—Frankie can just never make anything easy.
tanana40 - May 23, 2008
has Saunders EVER come off the rails? The man is nails…Jamie Moyer with a fastball!
K3YEROUT - May 23, 2008
pre 2008 constantly
hauldog - May 25, 2008
I wouldn't
highlandhalo - May 23, 2008
Frankie did his job, I'm not mad at him.
But Joe should have been given the opportunity to nail this one down himself with a 3 run lead. If he gives up the run, or another baserunner, fine, bring in Frankie, but Saunders earned the right to more leeway than a single baserunner.
TheOptimist - May 23, 2008
i just change the channel when frankie comes in
and assume we won. its really the best way to deal with it. you get to enjoy the game, chances are he WILL get the save, but whats the harm in changing the channel? you either spare yourself the heart attack or the frustration of a blown save/loss.
my advice: change the channel when frankie enters!
ihearhowie2.0 - May 23, 2008
Saunders shoulda been allowed to go for the shutout.
He hadn’t even thrown 100 pitches yet and Thome, a lefty, was on deck. He had a 3 hit shutout going and he was pitching great all night. At least let him go until the tying run gets on or someone scores on him. Frankie comes in and blows the shutout, walks a guy and allow two stolen bases. It’s a save but it sure wasn’t pretty. Saunders keeps runners glued to the bases and he’s pitched better than Frankie has all year long. He deserved the opportunity to finish the game.
100wins - May 23, 2008
1st 2 pitches to OC were strikes
It wasn’t like he was walking anyone. He was still throwing strikes and getting people out! This was just a stupid move!
K3YEROUT - May 23, 2008
Whatever happened to pitchers being allowed to blow their own CG shutouts? -nt
100wins - May 23, 2008
That went out of style about the same time WHAM and Culture Club faded.
Fan Since 1981 - May 23, 2008
Ok I have to ask
What is -nt ?
ReggieBullits - May 23, 2008

100wins - May 24, 2008
Oh ok - nt
ReggieBullits - May 24, 2008
If it wasn't K-Rod being brought in...
Some of the guys wouldn’t be barking out the ‘WTF is Sosh doing’ card.
BBFan1 - May 23, 2008
it wasn't about krod coming in
it was about hokie joe getting taken out.
b0rd3rline - May 23, 2008
That's true
Everyone is so hard up for Saunders to get his shut out – damn Scioscia for not letting it happen and instead worrying about getting a win.
BBFan1 - May 23, 2008
False dichotomy -nt
100wins - May 23, 2008
Actually, I'd have been even more irritated (Not to mention worried as hell)
if Sosh brought in anyone BUT Frankie. K-Rod’s the closer, end of discussion.
TheOptimist - May 23, 2008
I missed a good one. Shutout into the 9th - nice!
Do not rip The Soth!
Buck Rodgers and Marcel Lachemann send their regards. ;)
Fan Since 1981 - May 23, 2008
The Soth has been duly and truly ripped
highlandhalo - May 23, 2008
Soth earned this ripping!
take the good with the bad! I’m not advocating “fire Soth”, just totally disagree with his way of operating tonight…
K3YEROUT - May 23, 2008
Could Joe have been fatigued? He did lose 10 pounds due to his illness.
Was that mentioned during the TV broadcast? If I had to guess, Sosh didn’t want to push Joe.
Fan Since 1981 - May 23, 2008
Apparently the professional lipreaders of the board
saw Joe ask Mike “Why” on the mound. I didn’t see it, but I also can’t swear that he didn’t. I will say that he wasn’t all smiles coming off the mound, but you wouldn’t expect him to be regardless.
Zu Long - May 23, 2008
maybe he didn't want frankie to blow another save on his behalf?
just sayin
Funke5ive - May 23, 2008
Yeah. K-Rod was only 19-20 on the season. I'm sure Joe was really doubting him.
Especially when his only blown save came after he hurt his ankle, and he’s been nails before and since.
Zu Long - May 23, 2008
Nails?
The guy’s getting by by the skin of his teeth. I appreciate the results but we all know he’s winning ugly.
100wins - May 24, 2008
ugly or not.
20 out of 21 saves at this point in the season is quite legit.
b0rd3rline - May 24, 2008
you're dumb
angels4adam - May 24, 2008
I guess you must've been a fan since last year then by your sig line. -nt
100wins - May 24, 2008
looks like i'm not the only person to disagree with you.
are you smarter than a sixth grader?
clearly not
angels4adam - May 25, 2008
I don't think you're in any position to judge who might be smarter...
than a 6th grader, since you obviously are not. Ever wonder why other folks don’t respond to your posts? Beyond the simplistic aspect, the myriad of “me too” posts you seem to enjoy, it would be because you just don’t seem to have anything constructive to say. I posting to discuss Angels baseball and you choose to insult me from left field. What exactly is the point of that? You expect me to get into a pissing contest with you? Go develop a few brain cells and come back when you’re ready to have a reasoned, logical discussion on the issues. Otherwise, piss off and go hurl your infantile insults at someone else.
100wins - May 26, 2008
well, looking through your profile,
i see that there are a grand total of 35 replies to your grand total of 53 comments on this site, and 7 of them are people in this thread telling you how dumb you are.
and if you think multiple people asking you why you put “-nt” at the end of every post makes your comments meaningful…then i can’t help you.
in other news, i’ve gotten more replies to single posts than you have gotten during your entire 18-day tenure on this blog.
angels4adam - May 27, 2008
Baseball is a skin of your teeth, game of inches proposition most of the time.
Otherwise it would not be near as interesting and fun to watch.
44FAN - May 24, 2008
If he is winning ugly you are POSTING UGLY
That 0.87 ERA for the month of May is hard to look at.
hauldog - May 25, 2008
Perhaps you're just projecting ugly -nt
100wins - May 25, 2008
ACTUALLY
I am beginning to wonder if Frankie has a high-risk strategy of sorts to not give in to the early hitters (which still might work in that they take bad swings at bad pitches ala AJ) and then just embarrass the hell out of the later hitters dying to be dramatic.
Is Frankie a “Clutch” pitcher by a design of setting up “clutch” situation in which he has already designed a way out of?
Rev Halofan - May 25, 2008
It's an interesting hypothesis...
but I don’t think he’s trying to put himself into hitters count’s continually. He’s overthrowing way too often and that probably is the result of trying to be too fine with his pitches. The problem is that he can’t get away with this methodology forever, eventually ptiching from behind is gonna end up biting him in the ass. We all know that he’s capable of pitching better than he has so far this year and I expect that he will as the season goes on.
Of course, the results so far are pretty good. The only point I was trying to make is that he’s been living life on the edge like never before and he needs to develop more consistency with his pitches before the odds catch up with him and bad things start to happen.
100wins - May 25, 2008
All things considered, I love it when the Rev
posts the post-game thread, and there are no questions for nominees for BOTG or POTG.
That was all Hokie Joe. Extra crispy
highlandhalo - May 23, 2008
I prefer original recipe, but this was a "no doubter"
Colonel all the way!
K3YEROUT - May 23, 2008
Anyone want to guess ...
whether the Halos will have more wins than Howie Kendrick has ABs by the time HK polishes off his last great big blunt and decides to play baseball again?
The number is 36, btw. 7 ABs fewer than Sean Rodriguez has this season.
highlandhalo - May 23, 2008
Blame of the Game: GMJ
Oh, we WON. Let me correct myself.
Blame of the Game: GMJ
PieceOfAase - May 23, 2008
PANTHER = Saunders (Which should have had a CG shutout)
Oh and Kendry Morales is still on Fire 2-4 in Salt Lake hitting his 7th HR and getting 4RBIs in the game that is still not over.
Oh and HGH is doing great as usuall, 0-3 AGAIN tonigh and his Average couldnt be any better at .212 with 1 triple, 6 doubles, 5 HR and 25 RBIs in 179.
Its not like we have a guy down in AAA that had the 3rd Highest slugging % on the team and batted .300. And we certainly dont have a guy in AAA that is batting .308 with 9 doubles, 7 HRs and 36 RBIs in 155 At Bats.
acuda27 - May 23, 2008
definitely Saunders
took a shutout in the ninth, and was sick while he did it…
bighead - May 23, 2008
So...
I was thinking about posting all the results up to now in one post… but since I’m going to post the whole shebang for the week tomorrow ANYWAY, I’ll just do one big post tomorrow with all the goods. Hopefully without errors, but it should be easier for someone to find it there I imagine.
So, Hope noone was holding their breathes.
