Blame of the Game: Nominees?
REV HF UPDATE: I couldn't punish Ervin Santana for a damn fine start, but which lack-of offense Angel was more offensive than the others. Well according to FANGRAPHS, there was on player who contributed more to this loss than Ervin's surrendering of four runs.
And that Angel is...

Blame of the Game: BRANDON WOOD
Welcome back to the show, kid.

Santana, Wood or Hunter
Los Angeles de Anaheim - May 22, 2008
Hunter has been shit lately
but hard to blame him for every single loss
highlandhalo - May 22, 2008
Scioscia for not calling up Morales and have him DH instead of HGH.
But we cant blam Scioscia so BOG = HGH!!!!
acuda27 - May 22, 2008
Did you get that journalismo trabajo acuda?
highlandhalo - May 22, 2008
Claro que porsupuesto que desdeluego que no.
acuda27 - May 22, 2008
Gary of the Game = Santana
He gave up that HR after we came back. That was a killer
KingF15h - May 22, 2008
Wood, he's shown no wood so far
Left too many ducks on the pond
Chone's Chonies - May 22, 2008
you might be onto something
he shall just be called Dick because he was no Wood right now.
SCHalo - May 22, 2008
Santana was serviceable
Angels’ bats are barely doing anything at all.
yeswecan - May 22, 2008
Dick Wood
Otherwise, me
highlandhalo - May 22, 2008
My mind has been changed
gotta go with Broke Wood and his 4 LOB
HaloDutch - May 22, 2008
BOTG = Santana's hat
it looks stupid sitting all crooked on his head and must have cost us the game somehow!
KingF15h - May 22, 2008
Plus he leaves the brim flat...the baseball gods do not approve
HaloDutch - May 22, 2008
I know! I hate that!
KingF15h - May 22, 2008
Agreed, agreed!
The flat bill has GOT TO GO
highlandhalo - May 22, 2008
All the hip-hop kids would just laugh at you for saying this.
44FAN - May 22, 2008
the hip-hop kids can go fuck a stump
damn, there goes my one for the month…
HaloDutch - May 22, 2008
Dad?
Seriously is that you? My Dad says that all the time.
hauldog - May 23, 2008
I am in my 30's...
and I LOVE the flat brims. I also don’t mind bent brims either.
Downing Rules - May 23, 2008
I just found it funny that he wants to blame him for how he wears his hat
My Dad has said that verbatim.
hauldog - May 23, 2008
BOG: Speier, just because I can.
There is a spammer on isle #2 yeswecan.
44FAN - May 22, 2008
My botg is hunter
Burnett was trying to walk him and he struck out w/o seeing a pitch in the strikezone, then his DP in the 8th hurt, and I think he was way too shallow on that triple in the 2nd. I mean he should have known Santana was going to groove a fastball with a runner on first, 1 out and their number 9 hitter. Even though he’s probably not a good hitter, who can’t hit a fastball in the majors when they know it’s coming, yet Hunter was playing right next to GA.
MH252525 - May 22, 2008
but Hunter has to play next to GA because GA is so slow. If anything, blame Sosh for playing GA in the field!
KingF15h - May 22, 2008
when was the last time you got 2 infield hits in a game ;)
I think GA is a bit faster than you give him credit for, but overall I agree, even though GA got that nice OF assist that I don’t think GMJ gets, GMJ should be in the OF whenever he is in the lineup. When he’s not in the OF, then someone else should be DH’ing.
MH252525 - May 22, 2008
Yeah, his infield hits surprised the hell out of me tonight!
but still, he doesnt play the field as well as GMJ. And it pains me to say that because I can’t stand GMJ
KingF15h - May 22, 2008
Why, because GA doesn't dive for balls he takes a bad route to?
You should check your facts before you spout off because it makes you look like an idiot. Anderson has better range and a better arm tha GMJ. In fact GMJ has a below league average range factor in both right and left field. Anderson is obviously healthy this year and despite his slow start with the bat, he is playing good defense. GMJ needs to be benched. To be hitting in the two hole with his OPS+ of 81 is absurd. Screw the $10 mil a year he is getting paid. Let reggie DH so we have someone on base in frount of Vlad et al.
Halo84653 - May 23, 2008
I'm an idiot??
GMJ is better in the field than GA. There is no doubt about it. And besides, you tell me that I need to “check the facts” and then spout off a bunch of opinions, not facts. Why are you attacking me anyway? We’re all Angel fans here, there is no need for name calling. Don’t be an internet thug.
KingF15h - May 23, 2008
In this case
the facts referred to are the defensive metric statistics. GA’s are better than GMJr.’s.
jjackflash - May 23, 2008
Vlad
He’s supposed to be the #1 go to guy and he didn’t even reach base.
mhatter106 - May 22, 2008
he singlehandedly provided all the Angels' runs yesterday
he hasn’t performed as well as he usually does, but i don’t think we should expect him to get it done every single day
yeswecan - May 22, 2008
But we SHOULD expect the rookie 3B to provide hitting support the day after arriving?
How does that make sense?
Zu Long - May 22, 2008
It's a man's game, zu. ...
Did inexperience stop K-Rod or Desmond from contributing to our only WS title? Time for Dick Wood to step up.
highlandhalo - May 22, 2008
Don't see why he gets BOTG
When hunter was just as bad. Rookies doing well is the EXCEPTION, not the rule. Veterans making $18 million per are expected to produce.
Zu Long - May 22, 2008
see below zu
highlandhalo - May 22, 2008
All Desmond did was pinch run, I think he got an ab once or twice once it was a blowout situation in the ALCS or LDS.
MH252525 - May 22, 2008
Key play PR'ing in game 6... made Barry take his eye of the ball when Figgy went 1st - 3rd...
how could you forget?
Downing Rules - May 23, 2008
Tough BOTG
Gotta go to Dick Wood. Maybe he’ll learn his lessons from the HH faithful. And then start raking.
highlandhalo - May 22, 2008
Based on what I've seen from the night,
it’s either Santana or Hunter. Wood isn’t expected to produce, while Hunter is.
Zu Long - May 22, 2008
fair enough to a point ...
actually, both of them are expected to produce
highlandhalo - May 22, 2008
I don't know why you expect him to produce when he isn't getting consistent MLB atbats
We don’t make the same requirement of Rivera.
Zu Long - May 22, 2008
I'm not saying I agree with Wood being the BOTG
but he really was a rally killer tonight Zu. 4 LOB
KingF15h - May 22, 2008
I agree
But so was Hunter (8th inning GIDP), and like I said, I’m pointing the finger at the veteran millionaire before the rookie call-up spot start.
Zu Long - May 22, 2008
yeah, Hunter looked silly with a couple of those swings. He was trying too hard
KingF15h - May 22, 2008
Hey wait a minute ...
Dick Wood is not just any other “rookie call-up”. Dick Wood is a guy that the geek baseball press have been pumping up to be the next Cal Ripken for at least three years. This is not a cup of coffee for Dick. This is time for Dick, to get it on … Dick.
highlandhalo - May 22, 2008
I was agreeing with you zu
Hunter and Santana should both be expected to produce by now.
Not Dick.
highlandhalo - May 22, 2008
Sorry, thought by "both" you meant "Wood and Hunter" ^_^
Zu Long - May 22, 2008
Nope, mate ...
I meant Santana and Hunter.
My butt.
highlandhalo - May 22, 2008
Santana wasn't horrible by any means
but when he gave up that HR after we fought back…man that was just a crushing blow to the team
KingF15h - May 22, 2008
that's a good point
even if Santana wasn’t full Boodoo, sometimes one bad pitch is all it takes to lose it.
yeswecan - May 22, 2008
Ervin, probably ...
Plus a crimp in the bill of his cap wouldn’t hurt anything.
highlandhalo - May 22, 2008
i'm no fan of the flat cap
but he HAS won 6 games so far with it.
yeswecan - May 22, 2008
BOTG: Injuries
Or does that make me sound like a whiney bitch?
highlandhalo - May 22, 2008
yes :)
they’re just part of the game, like luck.
yeswecan - May 22, 2008
I'd be okay with that too.
I might even be okay with Sosh for not DH Napoli (our best hitter) over Juice.
Zu Long - May 22, 2008
If there was anything we could do with Juice other than DFA
I would be all for it.
highlandhalo - May 22, 2008
I'm just hoping that Wood gets hot
So we can post things like:
“Yaaay DICK!”
highlandhalo - May 22, 2008
Grrr ... frustrating
I’m going to bed now. You lot fight it out. Hunter is slumping. Howie Kendrick needs to stop dropping acid on what ever hippie karma trip he’s on (36 ABs a year just doesn’t cut it Howie, Bobby Grich played the whole 86 season with a screwed hammy). .... and as far as Richard Brandon “Dick” Wood, I hope he does turn into the next Cal Ripken …
Starting tomorrow. Go Halos! Go DICK!
highlandhalo - May 22, 2008
Me too......Go Dickety Wood!!!!
Hope he starts bustin out that 40+ HR power.
acuda27 - May 22, 2008
Or the next Rob Deer
PieceOfAase - May 22, 2008
Give it to Gary
Just because he is Gary Matthews Jr.
edhoo - May 22, 2008
ill go with this
gmj is officially the new whipping boy
UCIHalo - May 22, 2008
What crazy manlove does Soth have for GMJ?
Did GMJ catch Soth in the act of getting fellated by an Angel groupie? Just what does he have on Scioscia in order to convince the skipper to play him every friggin’ day/night, despite his complete suckitude?? Why is Willits wilting on the bench? Has Juan Rivera ventured too far into the outer darkness of Soth’s doghouse? What gives?????
In the meantime, our $50 million man flirts with the Mendoza Line.
PieceOfAase - May 22, 2008
It's his philosophy towards "veterans"
And it’s a major flaw.
If the player struggles but has a good attitude, he’ll stick by him. Steve Finley logged 112 games and hit .222. Fans called for his head but Sosh kept playing him.
Shea Hillenbrand played 52 games and was starting to come around, hitting .254 on June 23rd. He had hits in 14 of his last 16 games as a Halo yet he was DFA’d because he had a shitty attitude. And the fans were happy (we all pointed and laughed at the Dodgers where Hillendeuche played almost every day for the rest of the season).
Alfonso just plain sucked.
Point is, he’s not Jim Leyland. Don’t mistake this as support for Gary, because I’m as over him as everyone else around here, but as long as he maintains a healthy attitude and shows a commitment to improving, Sosh will keep running him out there. For better or worse. And there’s nothing we can do about it but bitch and moan on a message board.
ReggieBullits - May 22, 2008
GMJ must have the positivity of Anthony Robbins.
PieceOfAase - May 22, 2008
Robbins hits better
scareduck - May 23, 2008
Would a Soth's doghouse be a slothhouse?
Downing Rules - May 23, 2008
Ask Justin Speier, he is the current occupant.
44FAN - May 23, 2008
You mean "Just Perspire?" he is no longer "Just Inspire"
Downing Rules - May 23, 2008
Just a Spewer
44FAN - May 23, 2008
Just Sewer
we are getting creative now. have a nice weekend everyone… catch y’all at the stadium Monday night.
Downing Rules - May 23, 2008
GMJ batting #2 ?
send him to the black hole
Funke5ive - May 22, 2008
Just look at the line-up
Gary Matthews as the DH? There’s no need to look anywhere else.
Santana pitched good enough to win.
Don’t get me started on Wood.
mustard_man - May 23, 2008
A positive...
Sean Rodriguez was listed as the Angels “top batter” in the box score:
LINK – to – BOX SCORE (yahoo sports)
Downing Rules - May 23, 2008
Another positive...
The A’s didn’t win, so we only lost a 1/2 game in the standings. AND the red-hot Red Suckers come into Mt. Davis tonight for a 3-game set. Let’s see if Oakland is for real or a fluke.
Downing Rules - May 23, 2008
This just in
Fluke
hauldog - May 23, 2008
thanks for that.
Downing Rules - May 23, 2008
You are welcome
Hard hitting analysis huh?
hauldog - May 23, 2008
Much deeper analysis than you would find on AN.
44FAN - May 23, 2008
to the point, for sure!
:)
Downing Rules - May 23, 2008
I blame the turf
Figgy and Aybar woulda been playing if it was grass.
