BOTH of Frankie's ankles are injured. He's hurt: pitches are not executable in the usual fashion.
With two bad ankles, he's not able to generate the necessary torque to power his pitches. 90 mph fastball? I knew something was wrong, plus he didn't throw any of his trademark sliders. Give him a break; he's pitching hurt.
he pitches for the angels right now. he's playing now. why are you worrying about frankie's free agency? that won't happen until october, and then ALL teams will assess his value. if he's overpriced, then only fools will pay it. if he closes 40+ games again this year, then he's gonna want alot of money. that's not greed; that's market value.
As much as Saunders deserved that win, our offense needed that boost. Torii is more than worth that rediculous sum he's making, in every way.
And I think it's time we bid Frankie farewall. Let's start prepping Arredondo/Shields/Speier, and see who gets the role. Frankie was too dumb to admit the ankle injury at the end of last season, and that's pretty much unforgivable.
I just want to say this to the Seattle guys forecasting doom
for our team despite the victory:
When the chips were down, and the team closer gave up the game at home due to injury, one team took it in rear, while the other knuckled up and won anyway. That's all I need to know about which team is better.
Torii: More than a Panther. Call this one a Dragon.
The downside to this game was:
1) The injury to HK
2) The still injured Frankie. And lay off Frankie! The guy obviously is not physically sound. When he's healthy and on his game, he has command of his 94 mph fastball and unleashes a filthy lights out slider.
I told those early deserters "better luck next time, but remember, there are 27 outs in a game..."
I don't think the ones that heard me will ever leave early again. I used to have leaving early FORCED on me when I was a child, hence, I never EVER think of leaving early.
I'd estimate that 60% of the crowd was gone by the time Torii did his magic.
You could see the flow of cars heading off the lot grow stronger and stronger as folks got up and left in the top of the 9th. By the time the bases were loaded, the exits were totally empty. I had visions of people sitting out in the lot in their cars listening on the radio, debating whether or not to dash back inside. Oops! Too late!
Imagine their feeling as they sat there, engine idling, watching the fireworks exploding over center field. Their only consolation was that they were now at the front of the line to leave. Yeah. That is probably why they bought their ticket in the first place. So they could be the first to leave.
Frankie gets off the DL, showcase him and trade his ass. Some desperate fringe contender will overpay at the deadline to rent him for a few months. This guy has no clue how good he has it as an Angel. Let him earn his money the hard way -- without being coddled by a nurturing organization.
As much as I'd hate to see him go, give Shields or Speier the 9th inning role. Oliver, Shields, Speier is a nice 7/8/9. Frankie is clearly not worth what he's asking.

THE HALO IS BRIGHT TONIGHT
The guy could seriously strikeout in every at-bat for the rest of the year and I wouldn't care. What he did tonight was so many levels of awesome that words cannot explain the magnitude of what transpired. He was worth every penny based off of tonight alone. And yet Scioscia will repeatedly bat him behind Anderson for the rest of the year. Maybe it's pissing Hunter off that Anderson is hitting in front of him that he's taking it out on the rest of baseball. So be it. I'm loving it.
Every time K-Rod gets a save, I'll be savoring it for all the haters who thinks he's lost it.
It is one game and it seems like everyone in the Angels' bullpen but K-Rod gets to have a 'get out Angels' fans wrath' card, especially if they are Scot Shields [who is overpaid] or Justin Speier [who really is overpaid].
As the game went to the bottom of the 9th, my wife & I were finishing dinner & went to sit down in the den. Her stipulation: only if we watch something other than baseball. Given the state of affairs, I acquiesced and we watched a movie. So, I just checked in here to see what "LOSE" picture was posted, and to go off on a rant about why K-Rod belongs on the DL (he does), and I see the improbable "WIN" picture. What the fuck? Yeah, I'm using a season's worth of F-bombs here (hey, this is mild compared to how they're going over at Lookout Landing, but I digress).
So, now I'm going to have to TiVo the replay. Geez.
By the way, Saunders pitched a heck of a game against a far more daunting offense than Minnesota's.
the thing is, technically, I didn't turn it off (the TV was still on, and it was still tuned to the game; it's just that we were watching a DVD instead.
I'm famous for this, though. I was at the game last year when Figgins went 6-6, including that game-winning hit (I think it was a triple). I left, though, when the warmed over corpse of Hector Carrasco was busy hemorrhaging runs. The Angels scored the winning run as I pulled into my driveway. And that wasn't the first time I'd left a game too early (I left a game in 2006 when AK came up with a game-winning hit as I was headed north on the 5, just passing the 91 interchange).
I've vowed never to leave early again. Although if Arte wants to buy me a season seat that I can leave early, I'd consider it...for the good of the team, of course!
I'm not mad about his blowing the save; that happens. The problem is, he's injured. Right now, it's his ankles...both of them. Soon enough, though, it will be his shoulder or elbow. That's what happens when pitchers try to alter their mechanics (as he has admittedly done) when trying to deal with an injury to the lower half of the body, be it the hip, knee or ankle. If he doesn't take some time off, he'll suffer an arm injury. That (and the steroids) is what did in Eric Gagne. He tried to pitch with a bum knee, and blew out his elbow while trying not to land so hard. That's exactly what's going to happen to Frankie. At best, he'll pitch ineffectively; at worst, major arm injury.
I could see that he was gingerly pushing off his right foot. It was obvious from where I was sitting. No power at all in the warm-ups and that translated to his performance.
Today’s LA Times article "Rodriguez's ankles are a source of concern" is echoing my sentiments that I stated last night. The quotes below are taken directly from the article:
"The closer's ankles, which are both sprained, heavily taped, and, in the words of Manager Mike Scioscia, a cause for ‘concern’."
"I couldn't get any balance on my back leg, and I was using all arm, not pushing off the rubber with my leg," Rodriguez said. "I couldn't locate my fastball. I had no power in my legs."
"His fastball, normally about 94 mph, has hovered around 91 mph, and his usually nasty slider hasn't been that sharp."
Means if he doesn't take the time off for his ankles now, he'll have plenty of time to stay off his feet fairly soon while he undergoes Tommy John surgery for his elbow.
Right after that game, FSN did a little promo for the next game and said, "Watch Torri Hunter and the Angels take on the Indians..."
Step aside, Vladdy? Very interesting. Perhaps this will generate a bit of a slugging competition between the two. ESPN still won't acknowledge it.
to be the face of the franchise, IMO. The guy has such a great personality and amazing on-field performance. He is a very marketable figure and will help further promote the Angels Baseball product.
a light hearted public "competition" between him and Vlad created by the media a la Maris and Mantle (on a much smaller scale of course)? I think that's quite marketable to fans as well, even if it never really exists in the club house.
I was amazed it took this long for someone to post that
In the same thread we're bragging about having the record of not losing games when leading after 8, we have short term minded morons talking about getting rid of Frankie. A lead after 8, who do you think is responsible for savings almost all of those leads? My God.
I just think Frankie's not worth the $15 million he's asking for. I'm sure he'll get his share of saves, and that's great. We're all on the same page. But watching him, he's like a ticking time bomb. And for whatever reason, I sense he doesn't bleed Halo red. He's a mercenary (I say that based on his spring training comments). So good riddance. And if Spier and Shields are overpaid, let's make 'em closers so that can earn their money.
great "Football Configuration" shot of the stadium in the win pic. There was also a great shot of that configuration in the Register today showing Gene and Jackie inside the stadium (probably to discuss Gene's new "star" he got from the city of Anaheim). Always loved those Marlboro ads near the long scoreboards (although I don't smoke). What an atrocious yet glorious place it was to watch the team in the 80's...ahh, the memories.
Look, I know Frankie is our guy, right now. He has put up some great numbers over his career since he came up, no argument.
A couple of years ago, Angel games were 7 inning affairs because Shields and Frankie were lights out. You just knew the game was over. Same thing for the Yankees and Rivera, Red Sux and Papelbon, Dodgers and Gagne (when he was on the juice).
My problem is that Frankie still believes he is that guy and wants to be paid as that guy. He isn't that guy any more. I am getting to the point that I would rather have a tired starter attempt to complete a close game than turn it over the Frankie.
A couple of games ago, YesWeCan tried to give Frankie POG instead of Ervin. A number of us convinced him to change. Now I am wondering if that might have been Frankie's only chance (ok, I am kidding here).
My point here is we all want that 'game over' Frankie, not the 2007 1.248 WHIP or worse the 2008 2.4 WHIP (granted 2008 is small sample size).

Mix in a STRIKE damn it...........I am so tired of watching the asshole and elbows act know as Francisco Rodriguez try to locate any sort of pitch.
Don't give me the standard excuse that this is his first blown save and others have blown saves so far because this is once again only the beginning.
Nice numbers for the first 8 games
3.1 innings / 3 hits / 5 walks / 3 K's / 3 earned runs
I am sure F-Rod's knee is already better with Hunters walk off grand slam HR
Great outing for Saunders unbelievable day at the plate by Hunter he was Macho size

This confirms what I was thinking...
Joe Nathan is the best closer in baseball. If the Twins won more games, he'd probably have more saves than K-Rod.
Bottom line is this: If Frankie wants to be the best PAID closer in baseball, he should be the best closer in baseball. He is not.
I expect more of him because he expects more money. If he wasn't sp greedy, I wouldn't be as tough on him.
One of the best closers, but not THE best.
Angel Hawker - April 8, 2008

if you look at frankie in a vacuum of the past 30 appearances, hes absolutely not one of the more dominant closers in the league
ihearhowie2.0 - April 7, 2008
Are you sure?
Frankie right now is not dominant due to health issues, but:
In Sept.2007: 11 games, 10.2 innings, 2.53 ERA, 17Ks (14.3K per 9), opponents BA/OBP/SLG of .184/.304/.368 (7 saves)
In Aug.2007: 12 games, 13 innings, 3.46 ERA, 14Ks (9.7K per 9), opponents BA/OBP/SLG of .200/.310/.300 (8 saves)
He was actually doing quite well.

Halo Hunter
The guy could seriously strikeout in every at-bat for the rest of the year and I wouldn't care. What he did tonight was so many levels of awesome that words cannot explain the magnitude of what transpired. He was worth every penny based off of tonight alone. And yet Scioscia will repeatedly bat him behind Anderson for the rest of the year. Maybe it's pissing Hunter off that Anderson is hitting in front of him that he's taking it out on the rest of baseball. So be it. I'm loving it.

Frankie
Every time K-Rod gets a save, I'll be savoring it for all the haters who thinks he's lost it.
It is one game and it seems like everyone in the Angels' bullpen but K-Rod gets to have a 'get out Angels' fans wrath' card, especially if they are Scot Shields [who is overpaid] or Justin Speier [who really is overpaid].
BBFan1 - April 8, 2008
i'm with you
but Frankie is hurt and needs to get those ankles healed so he can be the K-Rod everyone's been defending. we need that guy healthy, bottomline.

Are You FUCKING Kidding Me?

Can you do me a favor and turn off the critical junctures of games
for the REST OF THE SEASON?
Downing Rules - April 8, 2008
Well
the thing is, technically, I didn't turn it off (the TV was still on, and it was still tuned to the game; it's just that we were watching a DVD instead.

K-Rod Is Injured
At best, he'll pitch ineffectively; at worst, major arm injury.
jjackflash - April 8, 2008
During his warmups on the mound...
I could see that he was gingerly pushing off his right foot. It was obvious from where I was sitting. No power at all in the warm-ups and that translated to his performance.

LA Times Reiterates Key Points

All Arm
Means if he doesn't take the time off for his ankles now, he'll have plenty of time to stay off his feet fairly soon while he undergoes Tommy John surgery for his elbow.
jjackflash - April 8, 2008
He has gotta do what is best for the team and take time off
They can't risk the uncertainty of this ankle issue.

You know...
Hutch83 - April 8, 2008
Torii Hunter was brought in...
to be the face of the franchise, IMO. The guy has such a great personality and amazing on-field performance. He is a very marketable figure and will help further promote the Angels Baseball product.
Downing Rules - April 8, 2008
What about
a light hearted public "competition" between him and Vlad created by the media a la Maris and Mantle (on a much smaller scale of course)? I think that's quite marketable to fans as well, even if it never really exists in the club house.

I was amazed it took this long for someone to post that
In the same thread we're bragging about having the record of not losing games when leading after 8, we have short term minded morons talking about getting rid of Frankie. A lead after 8, who do you think is responsible for savings almost all of those leads? My God.

I'm not a hater
I just think Frankie's not worth the $15 million he's asking for. I'm sure he'll get his share of saves, and that's great. We're all on the same page. But watching him, he's like a ticking time bomb. And for whatever reason, I sense he doesn't bleed Halo red. He's a mercenary (I say that based on his spring training comments). So good riddance. And if Spier and Shields are overpaid, let's make 'em closers so that can earn their money.

Yeswecan...
great "Football Configuration" shot of the stadium in the win pic. There was also a great shot of that configuration in the Register today showing Gene and Jackie inside the stadium (probably to discuss Gene's new "star" he got from the city of Anaheim). Always loved those Marlboro ads near the long scoreboards (although I don't smoke). What an atrocious yet glorious place it was to watch the team in the 80's...ahh, the memories.

i agree with you
props, however, go to the Rev for all the win/lose pics.

Frankie blew six saves last season
but the angels came back to win each of them.
Funke5ive - April 8, 2008
Not Dominant
