to post the same thing. My vote is for Santana. Solid performance any way you look at it; factor in that his quality+ start was (a) on the road and (b) during the day, and it becomes that much better.
But K-Rod surely deserved one last year, so I'll let this slide. However, IMHO, for K-Rod to get Panther, he must either (a) come in to a more highly leveraged situation (where he inherits a baserunner) and slams the door shut without drama, (b) records 4+ outs., or (c) at the very least, retires the side in order. He did none of those things today.
Ervin by a mile. Dude bounced back and shocked us all by throwing up a gem on the road, in his first start of the year...unhittable for the first few innings, and very impressive overall.
Frankie did his job, but he almost shit the bed in doing so. If he had been lights out, perhaps...but giving him the panther because he almost choked, and then didn't choke isn't very panther-esque.
I like making sure Franky doesn't get shut out, especially following back-to-back one run saves. However, Magic was PHEE-nominal considering his road woes and how important he is to keeping this squad afloat while the two big horses are away from the track.
are so cool (i like seeing the graphs change with every vote) maybe we should vote for blame and panther of the game honors, close the polls an hour after the game and see who wins the honor (or dishonor if we lose).
Frankie was craptabulous today - Ervin was stellar...
There will probably be plenty of times where Ervin isn't deserving - but 3 runs in 6 innings on the road during the day is EXCELLENT for him - and Frankie almost pissed it away.
He does this SO OFTEN:
Speaking of holding on, Los Angeles’ Maicer Izturis flung his bat into the first row of seats far down the first-base line after losing his grip in the third.
in Scioscia's eyes. Sciosc has stood by Santana mostly because of his talent level displayed in '05 and '06. But for a miserable 2007, where most of us were ready to cast him off, I think Scioscia remembers well the Santana that appeared in Boston that day.
Black Magic deserved over KRod. I agree with most posters about needing to retire the side in order for a SV Panther. Walking two with a 1 run lead isn't as Panther as a Santana road day game with 5 scoreless to start...
I'll put these in the WIN/LOSE thread now. The gamethreads have become unweildly long and long load times may irritate a few. So, they'll come in here now.
Napoli nosed out by the bobblehead...
There is no justice in the world. ;)
thetooth - April 3, 2008
Panther??? Has to be Ervin.
For all his well documented problems on the road, this was a great start for him.
Fan Since 1981 - April 3, 2008
Panther all the way
K-Rod won't even throw his Panther Pitches without men in scoring position.
Magic was going to get it in my book, but starting in the sixth it looked like the staff didn't appreciate the nice lead the O was giving them.
eyespy - April 3, 2008
Frankie won't be re-signed by the Angels
Angels management has determined that the expenses are simply too great. What expenses?
cost of soiled undergarments >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> value of multi-year contract
I'll stop my bitching now and be grateful that the Angels took 3 out of 4 on the road. Very nice!
Fan Since 1981 - April 3, 2008
we need a proper voting system for panther
no more unilateral decisions
UCIHalo - April 3, 2008
In the thread originator's defense.....
If the prevailing sentiment is the panther is wrong, it can and will be changed. At least it was last season.
With that said, I vote Ervin for Panther. Ol Nuke had a good outing.
anaheimisnotla - April 3, 2008
thank you
the prevailing sentiment seems mixed so far, so we'll stick with frankie, for now
yeswecan - April 3, 2008
I think you need to recount. Doesn't seem as mixed as you think...
FREE ERVIN
SoCalWine - April 3, 2008
This ain't Demockerassie
So bite your tongue when you speak like that, or the wrath of Caligula will come down upon ye.
eyespy - April 3, 2008
I like this one.
Frankie kinda got juked by not getting a single Panther last season. I'm glad to see him get at least one this time around.

Completely agree except for letting this slide.
Santana deserves it.
SoCalWine - April 3, 2008
A 9-pitch save...
in what had been a nail-biter, would surely warrant a panther.
Allowing the faithful to soil ourselves is not worthy.
Opposite argument: However, the bottom line is, he got the save. A save is a save, whether it took 9 pitches or 100 pitches.
Downing Rules - April 3, 2008
scoreboard says win
and frankie got it done. it wasn't pretty, but when is it, really?

Downing Rules - April 3, 2008
heck, i'd even say
that Ervin should be panther of this game.
he had a very solid outing, and on the road too!
howiestheman - April 3, 2008
Panther
Ervin by a mile. Dude bounced back and shocked us all by throwing up a gem on the road, in his first start of the year...unhittable for the first few innings, and very impressive overall.

Does this mean he "sharted" the bed?
....just asking.

SWEET PHOTO!!!!
Downing Rules - April 3, 2008
I vote for Ervin Santana for POTG
Downing Rules - April 3, 2008
Santana is PANTHER
He needs the positive reinforcement. This was a road win on a day game.
SoCalWine - April 3, 2008
Give it to Frankie the first time he can go 1-2-3 in a 1 run game
All the drama was self induced. Don't reward that.
SoCalWine - April 3, 2008
Its Ervin
Not sucking on the road is better then whatever Krod does
edhoo - April 3, 2008
Oh and
Quinlan better be no where near the starting lineup tomorrow
edhoo - April 3, 2008
They will leave him at home...
he's from MN, leave him there (I can't believe I just said that, I LIKE Quinlan).
Downing Rules - April 3, 2008
Can we Co-Panther??
I like making sure Franky doesn't get shut out, especially following back-to-back one run saves. However, Magic was PHEE-nominal considering his road woes and how important he is to keeping this squad afloat while the two big horses are away from the track.
If they can't share, give in to the starter.

Let my Ervin go!
Caseys Kiss of Death - April 3, 2008
Maicer didn't get it...
Get it? We sometimes call Maicer "the Pharaoh?" ;)
Downing Rules - April 3, 2008
Santana as panther
As an earlier poster said, the drama in the 9th inning was all of Frankie's doings.
tanana40 - April 3, 2008
In Frankie's defense...
if he doesn't make it exciting, then....it's not exciting. ;) (purely tongue in cheek)
Downing Rules - April 3, 2008
since the voting polls on this new site
are so cool (i like seeing the graphs change with every vote) maybe we should vote for blame and panther of the game honors, close the polls an hour after the game and see who wins the honor (or dishonor if we lose).
SCHalo - April 3, 2008
Too bad we cannot limit it to only Angels fans...
because some M's fans might start voting for Quinlan as panther.
Downing Rules - April 3, 2008
Rev or somebody would have to nominate several first
Los Angeles de Anaheim - April 3, 2008
or maybe just in instances like this?
when it's too close to call? i think it's also fun debating who the POG is or should be.
SCHalo - April 3, 2008
I'll agree
Panther to Ervin for having a great game
Los Angeles de Anaheim - April 3, 2008
Black Magic...
Total 180 degree turn from last year's on the road/day game debacles.
Nice and Solid... like we know he should be!

Voodoo was pitching an AWAY game during the DAY....
we won and you say Frankie?
I say, who the hell was that pitching and what did they do to Santana?

Day game Win..........
I think the dome bamboozled his Black Magic in to thinking it was a night game
Funke5ive - April 3, 2008
INFO RELEVANT TO SANTANA/KROD DISCUSSION
Black Magic pitched a gem in this day game in Boston last year.
KRod ultimately was the winner after blowing the save.
wumbug - April 4, 2008
I think THAT game saved his appearance...
in Scioscia's eyes. Sciosc has stood by Santana mostly because of his talent level displayed in '05 and '06. But for a miserable 2007, where most of us were ready to cast him off, I think Scioscia remembers well the Santana that appeared in Boston that day.
