I don't like Papelbon, but his fastball is something else.
The other night against the Angels he was throwing the best fastballs I’ve seen from an opposing pitcher. If the NESN gun is accurate, they had him consistently at 98, 99 mph and even one pitch to Vlad at 100. And it wasn’t just that he was throwing hard. He had terrific command of the fastball.
I dont think you can pick any one of those poll options to be a definitive upgrade. At this point both Jeff Mathis and Kotchman have been doing well for a few weeks of one season while Varitek and Youkils are proven vets. I think Papelbon over K-Rod is a no-brainer, and manny seems to still have it while Vlad is steadily declining.
He was last year. He is this year. He’s younger. He’s a better defender. Their offense was ~= with Kotch playing in Angel stadium while Youkilis plays in The Giant Handball Court.
