This was on GA. He let two in my opinion fall that shouldn't have, plus he didn't hit. Vladdy hit the ball hard and only found an opening once, but at least he was hitting. This one is on GA
I'm sorry, but Matthews needs to be out there in LF - bum ankle or not. Anderson can't play the outfield anymore. He hasn't been able to for a while now.
and maybe after today's stupid crap and lack of hustle, Mike will pull the plug on him and let Matthews take over in left. Garrett's too much of a defensive liability; Matthews can at least catch the ball, not to mention his hustle
I tend to not post often, but when I do post, I am usually correct. Last post-season I hammered GA for playing like shit, as he did tonight, yet was met with attack after attack. Ho Hum.
You must have been beating him up after the 10-RBI effort...
during his 12-game RBI streak. He was just crap last year.
In all honesty, I agree with most in that he should not be in LF (sorry Casey's). Granted it is the dome and that is a bit more of a challenge, but how many games has GA played here without having this kind of problem? There is no excuse at the tail end of a long and distinguished career "oh it was the roof" BS.
i cant believe hes gonna pull the veteran card into not DHing. selfish player. his defense sucks. Matthews(healthy) was signed for defense. DHing him when we have a gimpy, old and injury prone GA is a waste of money. shame on scoscia for letting the prisoners run the asylum
but only ONE was irredemable with the leather too. Garret, a veteran who has played many games in Minnesota's ceiling of snow, lost two balls in the lights and it cost us.
point was that garrets been playing there every year forever and should have a handle on fielding his position in the dome. hes a horrible left fielder and since he went 0-4, there was no reason not to blame him.
and thus begins the countdown to his contract leaving the books.
But show GA a little respect. He's done more for this franchise than just about anyone else. If he wants to play in the field, let him. He's earned that right. He's a legend.
how much longer are we going to be saying this? havent we been doing the "come on, hes an angel lifer" thing for 3-4 seasons now? If hes gonna be arrogant enough to refuse to DH, then he gets whats coming to him. clearly his ego trumps better team defense.
where is all the overwhelming proof? Making a mistake in a stadium that is complicated to play in (I only saw the one in the eighth, and blaming him for that one is pure bull). Anecdotal evidence about "that one time I saw Garret not catch a fly ball" ain't proof. The mounds of statistical evidence do not show Garret as a terrible fielder. Many statistics seem to indicate he is above average...at worst, merely average. Shouldn't something out there, other than the half-second of time that we see Garret in frame on a defensive play on television be determining this?
And did we forget his first inning play in holding Carlos Gomez to a double, on what every single one of us were absolutely sure was a triple when we saw it go into the corner? He makes tremendous reads off the bat, and gets the right break. God knows where other fielders would have been. Closer maybe because of the half-step they have on Garret. Likely further because he's so good at breaking the right way.
Are you kidding me! Have you ever played the out field? Garret couldn’t read a fly ball if his life depended on it. As a season ticket holder I average about 55 games per year, and this sorry excuse about knowing where to position him self is a load of crap. Part of getting a good read on the ball is first movement. This guy looks like his feet are in a bucket of cement! And our score keeper at home is the most generous homer on the planet! If you look at his scouting report from the time he first stepped on to the field it reads like this. –Arm –Speed average reaction +Bat! Oh wait; you probably don’t know what a scouting report is sorry for talking above your head.
you make a strong argument for GA and have done it for EVERY newby to join the site. Just provide hyperlinks to the 200 other times you've had this same argument. Hacksaw might be able to find them himself.
You make good points, Caseys and I have found myself backing Garret the more I watch his footwork and trajectory to the ball and his ability to anticipate. It is for real.
BUT, it is not worth benching him over. That is too far. Give him his shot, he is going to accept being a DH once GMJ is healthy, as he really has no choice. But as of opening day, he was our best option to play LF.
I told Caseys to let it go as he has made this GREAT argument 1000 times before you suddenly signed up two days ago. You do need to watch GA a bit closer and you will see his jumps and his reads. It is true -- the guy is a SMART ball player.
oh and what is your outfield experience? teeball perhaps? and what does being a season seat holder have to do with anything? do you think that makes your opinion any more valuable? Oh and I guess you personally have written and read the scouting reports for GA? GA gets great jumps on balls. he reads the ball off the bat well. he missed 2 balls on opening day in the crappiest stadium ever. don't act like your god's gift to baseball analysis.
Listen little boy, I have been playing baseball longer than you have been alive. And yes I have read scouting reports on GA. I could look through my old phone list and give you the names of the entire local and head scouts in the area, but that might confuse you. Stop thinking with your heart and face facts. The coaches are positioning him and he still can’t get to a lot of balls that most average skilled big leaguers can get to. Rember, I just want our boys to be at there best every game! That’s all.
Well, I'm completely with you on the fact I want our halos to be the best they can be,and yes i have baseball experience in fact i'm up in norcal playing ball right now. The reads the ball off the bat incredibly well, how can you deny this fact?
Adam, are you stupid, or just blind? Baseball is all about WHAT HAVE YOU DONE FOR ME LATELY? And lately Anderson has given us squat! The run last year was a fluke! Even in his 10 RBI. Game none of those RBI’s was of any importance! The skills are gone; costing us more than the bat is helping! Thanks for the memories now call it a day!
I don’t have a problem with the bat, but he thinks he is above the team with the whole I should start every game in left deal. If that foot acts up from playing in the field, that means no A.B.'s
they took off him. I was more pissed at Naps for letting runners get in scoring position and Izzy for GIDP with bases juiced then I was for GA missing the pop up.
(I try to think about Mo Vaughn as little as possible), but that is a very good parallel. Let's hope a season like that isn't on tap. All of these injuries have been pretty frustrating.
This site is pretty hard to get used to. When it runs fast, it runs really fast, like right now. But earlier tonight, I was pulling out my hair trying to post.
Opening day - I would expect slow days at times but this is probably the worst as the SBN Engineers will learn from it and there is only one opening day.
Vlad/Anderson/Torii
all equally sucked

Nope

garret...
looked like a confused little leaguer out there....
haloforlife - March 31, 2008
Garret or torii
Garret had no idea how to play outfield in the stupid dome. Torii had some pretty crappy a-b's
wiskyhalo - March 31, 2008
Why does he even play LF anymore anyways?
I'm sorry, but Matthews needs to be out there in LF - bum ankle or not. Anderson can't play the outfield anymore. He hasn't been able to for a while now.

i completely agree

howiestheman - March 31, 2008
If GMJ is still to hurt to play left
Then Rivera needs to play tomorrow
Anderson was just awful on defense.
edhoo - March 31, 2008
i still would give it to torii
blown opportunity to make a statement. even MSN's homepage was running the storyline

I shouldn't say "I don't get it"
because I do.
I just disagree with it.
Torii's flailing around in the clutch when nothing was close in the 9th was ridiculous.
If you're counting the drop-in in the ninth in front of Garret, I'd give him precisely zero culpability in that. That shit just happens.
Caseys Kiss of Death - March 31, 2008
Agreed
Young missed one just like it off of GMJ's bat.
