Angels pitching prospect Nick Adenhart, baptized with an official Halos Heaven nickname in the pregame preview (King Ade-Rock), showed the poise and command of a major league starter, albeit against the presumed major-league worst San Francisco Giants whose lineup was a cross between aching veterans and unproven mallrats.
In 6 shutout innings, Adenhart struck out 6 of the 22 batters he faced, allowing 3 hits and 2 walks. Consistent with scouting reports, he allowed 3 baserunners to steal. None of them scored.
At the start of Spring Training, King Ade-Rock was 8th on the Starting Pitching Depth Chart, but with injuries to John Lackey and Kelvim Escobar, he moved within striking distance of the major league mound. With an iffy bullpen situation, the Angels' default #7 Starter, Dustin Moseley, might be more valuable to the club as the long reliever, clearing the succession line for the King to wear his crown as the 5th starter, perhaps greeting the Los Angeles of Anaheim faithful in the top of the first inning at the home opener two weeks from tomorrow.

Should it be ADE or AD ?
Also, Prince until he makes the team, or King as we know it is inevitable? Crown Prince? Any royalists have an opinion on this?
Rev Halofan - March 20, 2008
Ad
Downing Rules - March 20, 2008
oo, yeah, gonna have to go ahead and disgree with you on that
"Ad" isn't phonetic when you talk about Adenhart (Aid-n-hart). Ergo, I feel it should be King Ade-Rock. Like the "ade" in lemonade, but not like the "ade" in tapenade.

Then the Beastie reference is out...
Downing Rules - March 20, 2008
There are rules for nicknames?
since when?
MYSPASCOBAR - March 20, 2008
Rule #1: it has to make sense.
Downing Rules - March 20, 2008
Maybe if it is phonetically ade as in AID, then we call him...
COOL-AID. Dumb, I know.
Downing Rules - March 20, 2008
now you're just complicating the situation
Higz - March 20, 2008
how bout this one
"Hear N Ade"!
if he can pitch the equivalent of this guitar solo, then give him the #4 spot!!!

Traditionally...
...for him to be crowned King, the reigning King/Queen needs to die ("The King is dead, long live the King!")
Your target's name is Hernandez. Happy hunting.
The Limey - March 20, 2008
I say King
We need a King to war with "King Felix".
Prince makes me sound kinda fruity.
I really hope he takes over the number 5 slot, if only for a month. I really want to see him in person.
howiestheman - March 20, 2008
edit
Prince makes HIM sound kina fruity

The pitcher formerly known as?
Downing Rules - March 20, 2008
He was great today
But If I'm not mistaken, he's struggled throughout the spring, today being his only thoroughly solid outing. And it was against the Gigantes who you summed up great in your initial post.
I like the idea of keeping Moses in the 'pen, but I'm opting for a wait-and-see attitude before hitting the waiver wires in my fantasy leagues.

Nick Adenhart's Spring Stats
LINK -to- MLB ST Stats
1 HR given up in 18+ innings 3BB's to 13K's. 2.89 ERA.
Downing Rules - March 20, 2008
Good numbers
I was thinking of his last start when he gave up 3 runs in 4 innings.
ReggieBullits - March 20, 2008
Adenhart should get the job
He keeps the ball in the park and gets groundouts, good enough for a 5th starter.
edhoo - March 20, 2008
Dont get the "Nick"Name
Ade.....is pronounced Aid right?
And where did you get Rock from?
I guess you can say he is as solid as a rock but thats still kind of lame.
I say "King Hart" ...... or "KING JAMES" either of these sound way better.
acuda27 - March 20, 2008
Ever hear of the Beastie Boys?
King Ad-Rock is one of the Beastie Boys.
Rev Halofan - March 20, 2008
Oh I see......Adenhart is our Boy Beast that will demolish the Evil Empire of the East.
So is it Ad or Ade?
acuda27 - March 20, 2008
I had no idea
I mean, I've heard of the Beastie Boys, but I couldn't name or identify a single member. I was wondering what that nickname was all about.

Wasn't he the one with the wiffle ball bat, also?
Downing Rules - March 20, 2008
How about Lionhart??? I'm not quite sold on the whole "King" thing. We're definitely going to have to brain storm this one inside the HH community.

Rich Harden
They call Rich Harden King Richard
Rev Halofan - March 21, 2008
AD ROCK
Thats whats up...............
Funke5ive - March 20, 2008
No no no. None of this "King" business.
Besides, the Scot Shields situation is bad news.
Fan Since 1981 - March 20, 2008
Okay. The Shields thing was a TOTAL non-sequitur
but I am concerned that he continues to struggle. Anybody know what he is hitting on the speed gun? His velocity was down a few clicks in the 2nd half of 2007 and I'm wondering if he'll regain the zip on his fastball.
Fan Since 1981 - March 20, 2008
This is why
We still need to re-sign Frankie, even if he wants Mariano money.

anaheim angels - March 20, 2008
Mallrats on strike!
And that's an insult to mallrats, let me tell you. The Giants have zip, zilch, nada as far as major-league-ready position players who are really plus players.
scareduck - March 20, 2008
Mallrats was a great movie
but i don't think Jason Lee has alot of pop in his bat.

Match Game [BM]
Giants talked with Angels about Kotchman, Mathis
Bilko 420 - March 21, 2008
Well
if they want to trade Lincecum & Cain, I'm sure Reagins will listen. Otherwise, the Giants have nothing the Angels need or want. The stuff in the article about Bengie Molina is, in all likelihood, pure fiction.
jjackflash - March 21, 2008
Just read about it on MLBTradeRumors
BTW.......Where has Kotchman Been?
acuda27 - March 21, 2008
That is terrible
Do you know how raked over the coals I would get if I seriously wrote here that the Angels were interested in Bengie Molina? I get raked over the coals on the no-lifer message boards when I write accurate reports of what is going to happen.
Rev Halofan - March 21, 2008
Just begin all your trade threads with:
"It's possible that the two clubs discussed..."
Bilko 420 - March 21, 2008
Why was my post deleted?
I posted in response to Fan Since 81 question about Adenhart's velocity on his fastball last night and checked in today and my post was gone.
Jazzed4Halos - March 21, 2008
A variation on Joe-Cool
I'm no good with nicknames if it were up to me it would be something like Aidey or Cool Aide, Nicky-boy or hey.. Little Nicky?
As for Shields he's only pitched in 2 innings this spring I'd say it's early to say he's going to have an off year based on 2 ST innings. Last year his ERA in spring was 10.57 in 7.2 Innings.
Versolt - March 21, 2008
