Top 100 Angels: Jered WEAVER #60

With 35 wins in just three seasons, Jered Weaver ranks 25th All-Time as an Angel pitcher. For comparisons, Ken Forsch ranks 24th with 36 and pitched 130+ more innings than “Lil Weave.”

A first round draft pick out of Cal State Long Beach, Weaver fell in the draft over signability issues with his agent, Scott Boras. The Angels got him with the 12th pick but took a year to sign him, making Boras blink in the process. Weaver was up and down as the fifth starter in 2006, but the roller coaster was kind to him – he won his first 9 major league decisions, tying the major league mark held by Whitey Ford.

In addition to a respectable Walks/9 rate and K-9 numbers (his 2.81 K-BB Ratio in 2008 was 12th all time single Angels season and his 7.74 K/9 was 9th in the AL), Weaver ranks 27th in franchise history with 327 strikeouts. If he has an Achilles heel beyond the foul body language toward erroring teammates that he picked up from his brother Jeff, it is the longball – surrendering 52 in 460+ IP in his career (Kelvim Escobar, in contrast, has given up 53 as an Angel in 653 innings pitched).

At present, Jered Weaver is the answer to a trivia question: Name the last Angel to get a win in the playoffs, his stellar 2 innings of relief in an extra inning ALDS affair in Fenway Park was the 101st and final win of the great 2008 Angels club. Let’s hope that if that title is maintained, it is in Game 7 of the 2009 World Series.

The Jewler

…will always have a special place in my heart. I remember watching a game in 2006 against the Red Sox where we lost thanks to an Edgar Renteria (yes, I said that correctly) homerun. And I remembered thinking how happy I was he pitched for my team. And even since, when I was punch drunk with belief or paralized with disappointment, I’ve always appreciated the steady hand.

Here’s to hoping he realized what really ails him. He needs to bring back the high socks.

At the head of the 2004 draft class

Take a look at some of the guys drafted above him — Philip Humber, anyone? Jeffrey Nieman? Mark Rogers? Jeremy Sowers? The only guy on par with Lil’ Weave so far in that 2004 first round is Justin Verlander.

People like to slag the guy, because of his bad body language and their general intolerance for stoner-looking dudes, but he began helping us really damned fast, and ever since he became a mainstay in the rotation our record is over .600. I’ll take that.

Also, take a look at his second-half stats last year. He might be on the verge of making a jump.

Are you saying outside of August?

His August was horrible.

And for the record i’m a fan of the guy… just saying his total 2nd half wasn’t particularly impressive due to a crap August.

From May 13 on he went 9-5 with a 3.88 ERA, striking out 8.4 per 9 innings

That’s a bit more precise than “second half,” which includes that 5.50 ERA August, though he was still whiffing guys right and left even then, just giving up bunches of homers. Usually when I guy takes a leap forward in strikeouts, that’s a good sign.

Plus, check out his crappy run support

Weave had the 2nd lowest run support out of our starters (Ervin had the lowest, which just further contributes to his awesomeness)

Out of Weave’s 5 Losses in the second half the Halos never scored more than 4 runs. Out of all his Losses in the entire season the Halos only scored more than 4 runs twice!

That includes :

  • 6 inning no hitter against the Dodgers where he allowed one-run (off walks?) and still got pegged with a Loss!

** A 7-inning 2 run game against Oakland where he got pegged with an L.

In addition, out of his 8 No Decisions in the second half of the season the Halos only scored 4 runs or more 3 times. The Halos forget how to bat when he’s on the mound.

I Used to be Excited...

Until I remembered he’s a Boras client. I will miss him.

yeah

same here. lol

and a Boras client with a score to settle with the Angels...
enjoy him while we have him...

if he want’s to stay an Angel he is going to have to lose his agent.

Love me some Weave...

I had questions about this guy. He always seems super emotional and didn’t have the greatest year. However, after that Game 3 performance I kinda came to realize the guy is a serious competitor…and i love that.

Unfortunately, he is, indeed, a Boras client. Have the Angels been able to EVER retain a Boras client?

Weave is my kid's favorite Angel.

He likes his hair. He’s 7. Cut him some slack.
