Oooo my little free agent, my free agent
When you gonna give me some time Texeira?
Ooo you make the offense run, the offense run
Enjoy being stranded in Washington, Teixeira
Never gonna win, give it up
Such a money grub
you’ll always get it up, counting stats
for that paycheck stub
My My My Yi Yi You LOSE – Ma-ma-ma Mark Teixiera
Come a little closer now, will you huh?
Close enough to gaze at Lackey’s Ring, Teixeira
Keeping it a mystery with Scotty B.
Just keeps you fed and fat and jewelry free, Teixeira
Never gonna win, give it up
Such a money grub
you’ll always get it up, counting stats
for that paycheck stub
My My My Yi Yi You LOSE – Ma-ma-ma Mark Teixiera
When you gonna join a team, join a team?
Is it just a matter of time, Teixeira?
Or is it just your destiny with Scotty B., Scotty B.?
Did you and Scott win the pennant in your minds, Teixeira?
Never gonna win, give it up
Such a money grub
you’ll always get it up, counting stats
for that paycheck stub

I think the best place for him to land
would be The Yankees. With all of the spotlight on the bad economy and Wall Street, it would only be fitting for him to land in the center of “Greedsville”.
I hope the Yankees get Tex & Manny and implode into financial ruin to their greed and watch them quickly become America’s most hated team!
Dono Romantico - December 22, 2008
We would like that
Funny how when a team is winning, they become "The Most Hated" in america.Unless they’re the Angels of course. Then you would still LOVE them right?
But I guess you don’t need to worry about that happening since they don’t care about opening their wallet for impact players.
Highlanders - December 22, 2008
You Funny Guy
I have all the respect in the world for the Yankees because they put a winning team on the field. All of the WS Championships (IN THE PAST) …they earned.
What I have a problem with is the arrogance of Yankee fans (most of whom aren’t from NY and have never attended a game at Yankee stadium), who think everyone is jealous of “their team” because they spend more money and get the best players. The only solice that these baseball fans have had with that is seeing the end result for the Yanks fat wallets. No World Series. So really, the Yanks haven’t bought anything have they. And the complaining you are hearing are from fans who are pissed that the Yanks take a player they believe can put their team over the top, only to watch that player make fat cash and produce NO RINGS for the Yanks….as usual. If the Yanks are going to outspend eveyone for the best players, can’t The Yankees at least win a WS with them!!! What a waste of great talent.
And strictly from an Angels vs. Yankees standpoint, the team that won the WS most recently would be the Angels. Besides, what you are reading on this post is a venting of frustrations with Boras & his high priced players,
Every owner has their limits. Some owners have standards they live up to that doesn’t solely rotate around “Spending Money Because They Can”, rather than “Spending Money Wisely”. Fortuneately for the Yanks, you have recently had a competitor in your division that spends money similar to you to give you some real competition.. And the irony is they don’t spend as much and they have beaten you.
Go ahead and sign Tex. All I can say is that the one team that has a winning record against the Yanks and beats you in the post season is the Angels. We are to you what the Red Sox are to us in the post season.
Dono Romantico - December 22, 2008
Me Funny Guy
"the arrogance of Yankee fans…who think everyone is jealous of "their team"
You know that if you Angel fans would stop whining about the East coast teams, and how mean their fans are too you sensitive types, we wouldn’t think you were so jealous.
It’s simple. Stop crying and we’ll stop looking at you that way.
Highlanders - December 22, 2008
Uh...
You are aware that this is an ANGELS fan blog, right? What are we supposed to do, say, “The yanks are so much greater than the Halos, we all wish we were Yankee fans?”

Sensitive type. Deep down inside, Yankee fans like yourself are attracted to the sensitive types. It’s okay to come out of the closet.
Now that I addressed your sarcasm, let’s get back to facts. I noticed that you didn’t address anything in my post about your team being owned by the Angels.
I didn’t see you address anything about how Boston spends less money and has consistantly owned your ass since playing the Yanks at their own game.
What about the fact that thy Yanks spend the money to get the best players only to waste their talent and not win a WS?
Dono Romantico - December 22, 2008
You know, he's kinda right.
Your last sentence struck me as pretty much true.
“It’s simple. Stop crying and we’ll stop looking at you that way.”
Some Angels’ fans, not all…and not even most, but some fans are whiners. I don’t really care what the Yankees or Red Sox do, or what their fans think, but I am a little envious of their attitude and arrogance. Something we Angels’ fans should be more like. And I don’t mean douchebag attitude, but the “We don’t take no mess” attitude. We’re fans of one of the best, if not THE BEST organizations in all of sports. Didn’t re-sign Teixeira? Well, boo-frickin’-hoo. The Angels are still going to win the West and I’m sure this club will do whatever they need to do to put themselves in a better position to win the World Series…like they did last year in acquiring Teixeira.
We all moan about East Coast bias, I know I do, but if we as fans would pull up our panties and stop whining we might see a difference in how this team is looked at by the national media (if in fact that really matters). It’s hard to ignore brilliance and success.

Boras/Teixeira still want to talk to the Angels . . .
From Monday’s O.C. Register:
‘“Mark Teixeira enjoyed his time with the Angels and was an integral part of their success last season,” Boras said in a prepared statement. "His interest in returning to the club has been sincere, real and continues to be one of his earnest priorities throughout this offseason . . . .’
’Later, Boras said he has not closed the door to more talks with the Angels.
‘"Just because you get a pitch up and in doesn’t mean you get out of the box," he said.’

G Abbes - December 22, 2008
Boras has to say this....
This is his game. The more he keeps the illusion that multiple clubs are still bidding for Tex, or that Tex “loves” certain teams, the better his position is to extort every penny possible from ownership. To call his bluff, Arte not only should say the door is closed, but also disclose how much money he offered Tex.

Good Luck Getting Noticed in Baltimore/Washington
For a guy who could really make a push for Hall credentials with a team that he leads (like the Angels, where he would be the only player of his calibre in his prime), he sure seems more concerned about a couple extra milion dollars to play in the cellar for a team that no one watches.
I get that money is important, but I would think that after a certain threshold (say, $150 million) you might take into account things like personal bias, team chemistry, odds of winning, management, etc. This game of chicken Boras plays, in which he packages players as some kind of all-encompassing product and then stokes interest where there is none in an attempt to drive salary numbers, is ludicrous, and I’m glad the Angels are done. He had his time. He’s a great player and I owuld have lvoed to see him in Angel red, but the Angels have a lot of young players and role-players ready for their chance, and I’m ready to let Wood, Morales, and Rivera prove themselves.

Now that it appears obvious that the Angels aren’t going to get him, I am reading a bunch of whiney bitchy posts from a bunch of hipocrits.
Mark is only doing what so many of you said is okay to do. So as long as he ends up with the Angels it’s okay????
Kudos to ARTE for being a man of his word. Something that just isn’t heard of in this day and age. The Angels look better for NOT signing him and sticking to their principles and I hope Arte has a “nice interview” for all of baseball to listen to.
Dono Romantico - December 22, 2008
What happened to it
is it’s still called negotiating.
scareduck - December 22, 2008
Actually
The Angels look like a team that will be 11th or 12th in runs scored, will struggle to win a division they should run away with, and will bow out meekly in the divisional series.
Arte should have screwed the principles and signed the guy for whatever it took. Teixeira is exactly what the Angels need and I’ve always said so.
Gorbachav5 - December 22, 2008
Struggle to win the division ?? What team stacks up with theres in the West ?
Whatever your smoking, mail some to me please..
If the Angels get a good match up in the DS they should win.. Any good team can lose a 5 game series- check the Braves post season resume on all those great teams…
raven191 - December 22, 2008
Really?
The Angels were fundamentally an 88 win team last year, based on Pythagorean W-L. I think some of that may be due to the quality of the bullpen, but as of right now, the bullpen is weaker than it was last year.
Texas will get better – they have a ton of highly touted pitching prospects coming up and their hitting is always good.
Oakland will be better – they signed Holliday and also have a ton of grade A prospects ready to make an impact.
The Angels have gotten worse – they lost K-Rod, they lost Teixeira, they lost GA, Vlad, Hunter and Rivera are on the wrong side of their peak, and they’re really counting on their young guys (who haven’t impressed thus far) to take huge steps forward.
I still think the Angels will win the division, but I think you’re kidding yourself if it will be a pushover like it was this season. And you can’t rely on getting a “good matchup” in the DS, you have to set yourself up to be able to consistently beat any team. Losing out on the one guy that could help your team in every way it needs help is not a good way to make that happen.
Gorbachav5 - December 22, 2008
Well let's see
Juan Rivera is finally going to have the chance to prove himself for an entire season. That should cancel out the loss of GA
Casey traded for Tex. I’m assuming the Angels really believed they could sign him.
Kendry vs. Kotchman will probably be a wash.
What we are forgetting is that the Angels would have won the West WithOut TEX. With Tex, the Angels still lost to the Sox.
So far, nothing gained, nothing lost as far as our division goes next year.
Dono Romantico - December 22, 2008
That would be true
If Oakland and Texas hadn’t both gotten better. Matt Holliday alone might be worth 5 wins over the A’s left fielders last year. I still think the Angels will and should be the favorites to win the division, but considering their bullpen was a huge strength in winning so many close games last year and the bullpen has since gotten weaker, how can you say there is nothing lost?
Let’s say Morales matches Kotch and Rivera matches GA (I don’t necessarily agree with that, but let’s assume). K-Rod, while nerve-wracking, was very good and he’s gone. Vlad and Hunter are moving away from their prime. Saunders may have had a career year last year. Our 5th starter prospects are looking WORSE than Garland. I’m sure the Angels will get some people to mitigate these losses, but I just don’t see them being a better team than last year, and last year’s team was obviously flawed, even with Teixeira. Couple that with Texas and Oakland getting better and the Angels probably not getting as lucky with all the wins in close games and you have yourself a division race.
Gorbachav5 - December 22, 2008
Bravo Dono
I agree 100% – 8 to 10 years is insanity, and fiscally irresponsible. Everyone who is complaining about the cost of going to a game should applaud this hard line stance by Arte.

good pull hauldog but a starting rotation of...
appier, sele, ortiz, washburn and a kid (lackey) was good enough to win a world series. there isn’t a person alive who could’ve predicted that we would have won. i still think, how in the hell did we win in 2002? it was because we had the best team not the best collection of high priced talent.
thejd - December 22, 2008

I'd rather rely on good players than luck
That’s all I’m saying. Of course it’s possible that the Angels win the Series next year. But raise your hand if you think their chances are better without Teix?
………..
Anyone? Me neither.
Gorbachav5 - December 22, 2008
Regardless if the chances are better , a lot of great offenses can struggle in 3 or 4 games… It just happens that its the playoffs and it is noticed.. Tex didn’t help out, this is a great team I have watched and they will still be a great team without him.. His greediness is something I wouldn’t want on this type of team.. The team concept comes here first, why the team has had such a great run the last few years…
I know everyone wanted him,.but he no way desevrves what type of money he wants, and I’m glad they are not willing to give into him… The Angels will find ways 2 win with the team and players they have.. We still have Vlad and Hunter and a great pitching staff, pitching and defense wins championships… I like this team the way it is and I think we got a great chance, all Tex does is make the offense better for the year, but whos to say in a 5 game series the offense goes limp and we lose close games…
raven191 - December 22, 2008
Except
The Angels had the tenth best offense in the league, so it was very predictable that they struggled. Teix made the offense better and the struggles of the offense in the playoffs would have been even more pronounced if he hadn’t been there.
Of course luck plays a role in every playoff series, but would you rather hope you get REALLY lucky? Or just kinda lucky? Personally, I’d rather take as much luck out of the equation as possible and go into it with the best players. Teixeira, while maybe not deserving as much as is being thrown around, is one of those players. Sometimes you just have to overpay.
Gorbachav5 - December 22, 2008
Also
If I read this correctly, you’re saying the Angels have as good a chance to win a 5 game series without Teix as they do with him? That’s flat out incorrect. Yes, they would still have a chance, but Teix is exactly the type of player they need to make the offense consistently better.
There is only one way to win a game – score more runs than you’re opponent. In order to do that, you need players who can both produce runs and prevent runs. The Angels are very good at the second half of that equation, and pretty poor at the first half. Teix was by far the best solution to increasing run production. It’s not my money to spend, but I think the Angels should have at least gone to $175 million for 8 years.
Gorbachav5 - December 22, 2008
Your, not you're

Gorbachav5 - December 22, 2008

hauldog - December 22, 2008
Put it this way
09 Rivera will be better than 08 G.A.
09 Wood at 3B will be better than 08 Figgins
09 Kendry will not be as good as 08 Teixeira
SO… the two improvements above add up to a better offense overall at these three positions. Assume that any regressions are balanced out with improvements in other areas and the question comes down to Moseley outperforming Garland and Arredondo matching up with Frankie.
Rev Halofan - December 22, 2008
That's all subjective
“09 Rivera will be better than 08 G.A.” : Maybe. Rivera was pretty bad last year too. Yes, I know he got inconsistent playing time, but he’s never played a full season’s worth of games and it’s not like he’s young – he’s 31. Fangraphs predicts he’ll be about .015 in OPS better than GA, but he’s also a slightly worse defender and baserunner than GA. It’s possible he’ll be better, but it’s almost as likely he’ll be worse.
“09 Wood at 3B will be better than 08 Figgins”: Unless you can predict the future, I’m not sure how you make this claim. Wood still has a lot of problems with breaking balls and while he made improvements last year, he still looked pretty bad a lot of the time. Who knows if it’s even Figgins he replaces in the lineup (if he’s given a starting job at all)?
“09 Kendry will not be as good as 08 Teixeira”: This is about as given as anything gets.
So you’ve got two up-in-the-air, cross-your-fingers-and-hope projections that say the offense will be better and one definite, without-a-doubt projection that says the offense will be worse. This doesn’t exactly inspire confidence.
Gorbachav5 - December 22, 2008
Heaven forbid we be optimistic
How about: Teixeira might get injured so don’t sign him. There, that is the opposite of what I am proposing, which side are you on.
Rev Halofan - December 22, 2008
Heaven also forbid we be realistic
I certainly hope this team puts it all together and somehow winds up in the top half of the AL in runs scored, but nothing in the foreseeable reality suggests that they will. I love the Angels, always have, always will, and I’ll be pulling for their success, but I’m not going to let that bias get in the way of intelligent analysis.
Gorbachav5 - December 22, 2008
the flaw in your logic
is equating “statistically-dependent analysis” with “intelligent analysis” and implying that there is only one way (your way) to intelligently analyze the makeup of the 2009 Angels.

hauldog - December 22, 2008
Agreed
His bat will play much better there if he can provide decent defense, which scouts think he can.
Gorbachav5 - December 22, 2008
Who plays 3rd though?
I like Wood at SS, but what are the options at 3rd for the future? Matt Brown? Q? It seems more prudent to stick Aybar at SS since he can at least field the ball and hit around .260-.280 in the majors and steal some bases.
I don’t consider Figgy an option because I agree with those that he should be traded for someone younger and with some upside.

I wanted
Tex and the rest of the team to go into next season with a bitterness in their mouth and a chip on their shoulder. That’s why we won in ‘02, we wanted it more and refused to lose. The team that plays the best wins, not the team with the best players. But having Tex makes everyone around him play better so it’s a little bit of both. We need clutch guys who show up in OCTOBER. Look at the Red Sox and their clutch guys like Youk, Pedroia, Papi and even Manny. Look at that Yankee run in the late ’90’s with guys like Tino Martinez, Jeter, Brosius, Posada. We won in ’02 with guys like Erstad, Glaus, Spiezo, Eck, etc. We need guys who show up when it counts and play their best when it matters.
44 - December 22, 2008
We won in '02 because we had clutch hitting,
and, as Tim Salmon so aptly put it: “We won Game 6 because Scott Spezio hit a home run. We did not win because he hit a single.” <>
Erstad then followed in the next inning with a dinger and we won 6-5.
We haven’t been able to step up since when it counted in the Post-Season.
I think it was more a matter of “Heart” than any statistical relevant numbers. As I look back and consider the clubhouse (and field) chemistry of Salmon, Glaus, Eckstein, and Percy, it becomes much clearer.
